ABOUT THE SPEAKER
His Holiness the Karmapa - Spiritual leader
Ogyen Trinley Dorje is the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism devoted to preserving and propagating Buddhist teachings.

Why you should listen

The name "Karmapa" means "the one who carries out Buddha-activity," and for seventeen lifetimes, a karmapa has embodied the teachings of Buddha in tibet. The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, was born a nomad in Tibet in 1985 and recognized by the Dalai Lama in 1992 as the 17th Karmapa. The young boy was brought to the Tsurphu monastery to live and study for his life as a spiritual teacher and activist.

At age 14, he made a daring flight from Tibet, and now works from a temporary camp in Dharamsala, near his friend the Dalai Lama. (After the Dalai Lama, he's seen as Tibetan Buddhism's second-highest-ranking spiritual leader, though the two men lead different schools within the faith.) In 2008, he made a long visit to the United States, where he spoke and taught at Buddhist centers around the country. And in 2009 he toured Europe, speaking about faith -- but also about protecting the environment.

00:32
is that all of the other speakers
1

é como se todos os outros palestrantes
00:34
have said exactly what I wanted to say.

tenham dito exatamente o que eu queria dizer.

And it seems that the only thing left for me to say

00:41
is to thank you all for your kindness.

é agradecê-los por toda sua gentileza.

01:00
of appreciating the kindness of you all,
7
45000
2000
de apreciação da gentileza de vocês,
01:02
I could share with you

01:53
I was given

foram-me dadas
01:55
a lot of different responsibilities,
12

2000
muitas responsabilidades diferentes,
01:57
and it always seemed to me, when I was young,
13
102000
3000
02:00
that everything was laid out before me.
14

que tudo estava determinado diante de mim.
02:02
All of the plans for me were already made.
15
107000
3000
02:05
I was given the clothes that I needed to wear
16

02:09
given these very precious
18
114000
2000
recebi estes preciosos
02:11
and holy looking robes to wear,
19
116000
3000
e sagrados mantos para usar,
02:14
with the understanding

119000
2000
com o entendimento
02:16
that it was something sacred or important.
21
121000
3000
de que era algo sagrado ou importante.
03:07
TD: But before that kind of formal lifestyle happened for me,
22
172000
4000
03:11
I was living in eastern Tibet with my family.
23
176000
3000
eu estava vivendo no leste do Tibete com minha família.
03:14
And when I was seven years old,
24
179000
3000
E quando eu tinha sete anos,
03:17
all of a sudden,
25
182000
2000
de repente,
03:19
a search party arrived at my home.
26
184000
2000
03:21
They were looking the next Karmapa,
27
186000
3000
Eles estavam procurando pelo próximo Karmapa,
03:24
and I noticed they were talking to my mom and dad,
28
189000
3000
03:27
and the news came to me that they were telling me
29
192000
3000
03:30
that I was the Karmapa.
30
195000
2000
que eu era o Karmapa.
03:32
And these days, people ask me a lot,
31
197000
2000
E nestes dias, as pessoas me perguntaram muito,
03:34
how did that feel.
32
199000
2000
como me sentia.
03:36
How did that feel when they came and whisked you away,
33
201000
2000
Como me senti quando eles vieram e me levaram,
03:38
and your lifestyle completely changed?
34
203000
2000
e meu estilo de vida mudou completamente?
03:40
And what I mostly say is that,
35
205000
2000
E o que eu normalmente digo é que,
03:42
at that time,
36
207000
2000
naquela época,
03:44
it was a pretty interesting idea to me.
37
209000
3000
era uma ideia muito interessante para mim.
03:47
I thought that things would be pretty fun
38
212000
2000
Eu pensava que as coisas seriam bem divertidas
03:49
and there would be more things to play with.
39
214000
3000
e que teria mais coisas para brincar.
03:52
(Laughter)
40
217000
3000
(Risadas)
04:56
TD: But it didn't turn out to be so fun and entertaining,
41
281000
3000
04:59
as I thought it would have been.
42
284000
2000
como eu pensava que seria.
05:01
I was placed
43
286000
2000
Fui colocado
05:03
in a pretty strictly controlled environment.
44
288000
3000
em um ambiente extremamente controlado.
05:06
And immediately,
45
291000
2000
E imediatamente,
05:08
a lot of different responsibilities,
46
293000
2000
muitas responsabilidades diferentes,
05:10
in terms of my education and so forth, were heaped upon me.
47
295000
3000
05:13
I was separated, largely, from my family,
48
298000
2000
05:15
including my mother and father.
49
300000
2000
incluindo minha mãe e meu pai.
05:17
I didn't have have many personal friends
50
302000
2000
Eu não tinha muitos amigos pessoais
05:19
to spend time with,
51
304000
2000
para passar tempo comigo,
05:21
but I was expected to perform
52
306000
2000
mas esperavam que eu atuasse
05:23
these prescribed duties.
53
308000
2000
nesses deveres prescritos.
05:25
So it turned out that my fantasy
54
310000
3000
Então acabou que minha fantasia
05:28
about an entertaining life of being the Karmapa
55
313000
2000
sobre uma vida divertida sendo o Karmapa
05:30
wasn't going to come true.
56
315000
2000
não se tornaria realidade.
05:32
It more felt to be the case to me
57
317000
2000
Mais parecia para mim
05:34
that I was being treated like a statue,
58
319000
3000
estar sendo tratado como uma estátua,
05:37
and I was to sit in one place
59
322000
3000
05:40
like a statue would.
60
325000
2000
como uma estátua faria.
06:31
TD: Nevertheless, I felt that,
61
376000
2000
TD: Ainda assim, eu sentia que,
06:33
even though I've been separated from my loved ones --
62
378000
3000
06:36
and, of course, now I'm even further away.
63
381000
3000
e, é claro, agora eu estou ainda mais longe.
06:39
When I was 14, I escaped from Tibet
64
384000
2000
Quando tinha 14 anos, eu fugi do Tibete
06:41
and became even further removed
65
386000
2000
e tornei-me ainda mais distante
06:43
from my mother and father,
66
388000
2000
de minha mãe e meu pai,
06:45
my relatives, my friends
67
390000
2000
meus parentes, meus amigos
06:47
and my homeland.
68
392000
2000
e de minha terra natal.
06:49
But nevertheless,
69
394000
2000
Mas ainda assim,
06:51
there's no real sense of separation from me in my heart,
70
396000
3000
06:54
in terms of the love that I feel
71
399000
3000
em termos do amor que sinto
06:57
for these people.
72
402000
2000
por estas pessoas.
06:59
I feel, still, a very strong connection of love
73
404000
3000
07:02
for all of these people
74
407000
2000
por todas essas pessoas
07:04
and for the land.
75
409000
2000
e pela terra.
07:32
TD: And I still do
76
437000
2000
TD: E eu ainda
07:34
get to keep in touch with my mother and father,
77
439000
2000
mantenho contato com meus pais,
07:36
albeit infrequently.
78
441000
2000
ainda que não tão frenquentemente.
07:38
I talk to my mother
79
443000
2000
Eu falo com minha mãe,
07:40
once in a blue moon on the telephone.
80
445000
2000
ainda que muito raramente, ao telefone.
07:42
And my experience is that,
81
447000
2000
E minha experiência é que,
07:44
when I'm talking to her,
82
449000
2000
quando falo com ela,
07:46
with every second that passes
83
451000
2000
com o passar de cada segundo
07:48
during our conversation,
84
453000
2000
durante nossa conversa,
07:50
the feeling of love that binds us
85
455000
3000
o sentimento de amor que nos liga
07:53
is bringing us closer and closer together.
86
458000
3000
09:08
TD: So those were just a few remarks
87
533000
2000
TD: Bom, estas foram apenas algumas observações
09:10
about my personal background.
88
535000
2000
sobre a minha formação pessoal.
09:12
And in terms of other things that I wanted to share with you,
89
537000
3000
09:15
in terms of ideas,
90
540000
2000
em termos de ideias,
09:17
I think it's wonderful to have a situation like this,
91
542000
3000
09:20
where so many people from different backgrounds and places
92
545000
3000
09:23
can come together,
93
548000
2000
possam se aproximar,
09:25
exchange their ideas
94
550000
2000
trocar suas ideias
09:27
and form relationships of friendship with each other.
95
552000
3000
e formar relações e amizades umas com as outras.
09:30
And I think that's symbolic
96
555000
2000
E eu acho isso simbólico
09:32
of what we're seeing in the world in general,
97
557000
2000
09:34
that the world is becoming smaller and smaller,
98
559000
2000
09:36
and that all of the peoples in the world
99
561000
3000
e que todas as pessoas no mundo
09:39
are enjoying more opportunities for connection.
100
564000
3000
09:43
That's wonderful,
101
568000
2000
Isso é maravilhoso,
09:45
but we should also remember
102
570000
2000
mas nós devemos também nos lembrar
09:47
that we should have a similar process happening on the inside.
103
572000
3000
09:50
Along with outward development
104
575000
2000
Junto com o desenvolvimento externo
09:52
and increase of opportunity,
105
577000
2000
e o aumento da oportunidade,
09:54
there should be inward development
106
579000
3000
deve ter o desenvolvimento interno
09:57
and deepening of our heart connections
107
582000
3000
e aprofundamento das conexões de nossos corações
10:00
as well as our outward connections.
108
585000
3000
assim como nossas conexões externas.
10:04
So we spoke and we heard some
109
589000
2000
Então nós falamos e ouvimos
10:06
about design this week.
110
591000
2000
sobre design esta semana.
10:08
I think that it's important for us to remember
111
593000
2000
10:10
that we need
112
595000
2000
que precisamos
10:12
to keep pushing forward
113
597000
2000
continuar avançando
10:14
on the endeavor
114
599000
2000
na busca
10:16
of the design of the heart.
115
601000
2000
do design do coração.
10:18
We heard a lot about technology this week,
116
603000
2000
Ouvimos muito sobre tecnologia esta semana,
10:20
and it's important for us to remember
117
605000
2000
e é importante para nós lembrar
10:22
to invest a lot of our energy
118
607000
3000
de investir muito de nossa energia
10:25
in improving the technology of the heart.
119
610000
3000
em melhorar a tecnologia do coração.
10:47
TD: So, even though I'm somewhat happy
120
632000
2000
10:49
about the wonderful developments that are happening in the world,
121
634000
3000
10:52
still, I feel a sense of impediment,
122
637000
3000
ainda sinto um sentimento de impedimento,
10:55
when it comes
123
640000
2000
quando é sobre
10:57
to the ability that we have
124
642000
2000
a habilidade que temos
10:59
to connect with each other on a heart-to-heart, or a mind-to-mind, level.
125
644000
3000
11:02
I feel that there are some things
126
647000
3000
Eu sinto que existem certas coisas
11:05
that are getting in the way.
127
650000
2000
que estão atrapalhando o caminho.
11:43
TC: My relationship
128
688000
2000
TC: Minha relação
11:45
to this concept of heart-to-heart connection, or mind-to-mind connection,
129
690000
3000
com este conceito de conexão coração-a-coração, ou mente-a-mente,
11:48
is an interesting one,
130
693000
2000
é interessante,
11:50
because, as a spiritual leader, I'm always attempting
131
695000
2000
porque, como líder espiritual, estou sempre tentando
11:52
to open my heart to others
132
697000
2000
abrir meu coração aos outros
11:54
and offer myself up
133
699000
2000
e me entregar
11:56
for heart-to-heart and mind-to-mind connections
134
701000
2000
a uma conexão coração-a-coração e mente-a-mente
11:58
in a genuine way with other people,
135
703000
2000
de uma forma genuína com outras pessoas,
12:00
but at the same time,
136
705000
2000
mas ao mesmo tempo,
12:02
I've always been advised
137
707000
2000
eu sempre fui aconselhado
12:04
that I need to emphasize intelligence
138
709000
2000
a enfatizar a inteligência
12:06
over the heart-to-heart connections,
139
711000
2000
sobre a conexão coração-a-coração,
12:08
because, being someone in a position like mine,
140
713000
4000
12:12
if I don't rely primarily on intelligence,
141
717000
3000
12:15
then something dangerous may happen to me.
142
720000
3000
então algo perigoso pode acontecer comigo.
12:19
So it's an interesting paradox at play there.
143
724000
3000
Então, aqui está um paradoxo interessante.
12:25
But I had a really striking experience once,
144
730000
3000
12:28
when a group from Afghanistan
145
733000
2000
quando um grupo do Afeganistão
12:30
came to visit me,
146
735000
2000
veio me visitar,
12:32
and we had a really interesting conversation.
147
737000
3000
e tivemos uma conversa realmente interessante.
14:10
TD: So we ended up talking about the Bamiyan Buddhas,
148
835000
3000
14:13
which, as you know,
149
838000
2000
que como vocês sabem,
14:15
were destroyed some years ago in Afghanistan.
150
840000
3000
foram destruídos alguns anos atrás no Afeganistão.
14:19
But the basis of our conversation
151
844000
2000
Mas a base da nossa conversa
14:21
was the different approach to spirituality
152
846000
2000
foi a diferente abordagem espiritual
14:23
on the part of the Muslim
153
848000
2000
por parte dos muçulmanos
14:25
and Buddhist traditions.
154
850000
2000
e das tradições budistas.
14:27
Of course, in Muslim,
155
852000
2000
É claro, na muçulmana,
14:29
because of the teachings around the concept of idolatry,
156
854000
3000
14:32
you don't find as many
157
857000
2000
você não encontra tantas
14:34
physical representations of divinity
158
859000
2000
representações físicas de divindades
14:36
or of spiritual liberation
159
861000
2000
ou de liberação espiritual
14:38
as you do in the Buddhist tradition,
160
863000
2000
como se encontra na tradição budista,
14:40
where, of course, there are many statues of the Buddha
161
865000
3000
onde, é claro, existem muitas estátuas de Buda
14:43
that are highly revered.
162
868000
3000
que são altamente reverenciadas.
14:48
So, we were talking about the differences
163
873000
2000
Então, estávamos falando sobre as diferenças
14:50
between the traditions
164
875000
2000
entre as tradições
14:52
and what many people perceived
165
877000
2000
e o que muitas pessoas entendiam
14:54
as the tragedy of the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas,
166
879000
3000
14:57
but I offered the suggestion
167
882000
2000
mas eu ofereci a sugestão
14:59
that perhaps we could look at this in a positive way.
168
884000
3000
15:03
What we saw in the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas
169
888000
3000
15:10
was the depletion of matter,
170
895000
3000
foi a redução da matéria,
15:13
some solid substance
171
898000
2000
de uma substância sólida
15:15
falling down and disintegrating.
172
900000
2000
caindo e se desintegrando.
15:17
Maybe we could look at that to be more similar
173
902000
2000
15:19
to the falling of the Berlin Wall,
174
904000
2000
com a queda do Muro de Berlim,
15:21
where a divide
175
906000
2000
onde uma divisão
15:23
that had kept two types of people apart
176
908000
3000
que manteve dois tipos de pessoas separadas
15:26
had collapsed and opened up a door
177
911000
2000
entrou em colapso e abriu uma porta
15:28
for further communication.
178
913000
2000
para um aumento da comunicação.
15:30
So I think that, in this way,
179
915000
2000
Então penso isso, desta forma,
15:32
it's always possible for us
180
917000
2000
é sempre possível para nós
15:34
to derive something positive
181
919000
3000
derivar para algo positivo
15:37
that can help us understand one another better.
182
922000
3000
16:20
TD: So, with regard to the development
183
965000
2000
16:22
that we've been talking about
184
967000
2000
que nós estamos falando
16:24
here at this conference,
185
969000
2000
aqui nesta conferência,
16:26
I really feel
186
971000
2000
eu realmente acho
16:28
that the development that we make
187
973000
3000
que o desenvolvimento que fazemos
16:31
shouldn't create a further burden
188
976000
2000
não deveria criar mais um fardo
16:33
for us as human beings,
189
978000
2000
para nós seres humanos,
16:35
but should be used
190
980000
2000
mas deveria ser usado
16:37
to improve
191
982000
3000
para melhorar
16:40
our fundamental lifestyle
192
985000
2000
nosso estilo de vida fundamental
16:42
of how we live in the world.
193
987000
3000
de como vivemos no mundo.
18:16
TD: Of course, I rejoice
194
1081000
2000
TD: É claro, eu me regozijo
18:18
in the development and the growth and the rise
195
1083000
3000
do desenvolvimento e do crescimento e ascensão
18:21
of the noble land of India, the great country of India,
196
1086000
3000
da nobre terra da India, o grande país India,
18:24
but at the same time, I think,
197
1089000
2000
mas ao mesmo tempo, eu penso,
18:26
as some of us have acknowledged,
198
1091000
3000
como alguns de nós reconhecemos,
18:29
we need to be aware
199
1094000
2000
que devemos estar atentos
18:31
that some aspects of this rise
200
1096000
3000
que alguns aspectos dessa ascensão
18:34
are coming at the cost
201
1099000
3000
estão vindo a custo
18:37
of the very ground
202
1102000
2000
da própria terra
18:39
on which we stand.
203
1104000
2000
em que estamos.
18:41
So, as we are climbing the tree,
204
1106000
3000
Então, enquanto subimos a árvore,
18:44
some of the things that we're doing
205
1109000
2000
algumas das coisas que estamos fazendo
18:46
in order to climb the tree
206
1111000
2000
para conseguir subir na árvore
18:48
are actually undermining
207
1113000
2000
estão realmente enfraquecendo
18:50
the tree's very root.
208
1115000
2000
a própria raiz dessa árvore.
18:52
And so,
209
1117000
2000
E então,
18:54
what I think it comes down to
210
1119000
2000
o que penso resume-se a uma
18:56
is a question of, not only having information of what's going on,
211
1121000
4000
19:00
but paying attention to that
212
1125000
3000
mas prestar atenção
19:03
and letting that shift our motivation
213
1128000
3000
deixando isso mudar nossa motivação
19:06
to become more sincere
214
1131000
3000
para que ela torne-se mais sincera
19:09
and genuinely positive.
215
1134000
3000
e genuinamente positiva.
19:13
We have hear, this week,
216
1138000
2000
Ouvimos, esta semana,
19:15
about the horrible sufferings, for example,
217
1140000
4000
sobre os horríveis sofrimentos, por exemplo,
19:19
that so many women of the world
218
1144000
3000
que tantas mulheres do mundo
19:22
are enduring day-to-day.
219
1147000
2000
estão passando dia-a-dia.
19:24
We have that information,
220
1149000
2000
Nós temos esta informação,
19:26
but what often happens to us
221
1151000
2000
mas o que frequentemente acontece conosco
19:28
is that we don't really choose to pay attention to it.
222
1153000
3000
19:31
We don't really choose to allow that
223
1156000
2000
Nós realmente não escolhemos permitir que isso
19:33
to cause there to be a shift in our hearts.
224
1158000
3000
19:36
So I think the way forward for the world --
225
1161000
2000
19:38
one that will bring the path of outer development
226
1163000
4000
19:42
in harmony
227
1167000
3000
em harmonia
19:47
with the real root of happiness --
228
1172000
3000
com a real raiz da felicidade --
19:50
is that we allow
229
1175000
2000
é que nós possamos permitir
19:52
the information that we have
230
1177000
2000
que a informação que temos
19:54
to really make a change in our heart.
231
1179000
3000
possa realmente mudar nossos corações.
20:45
TD: So I think that sincere motivation
232
1230000
2000
TD: Então acredito que uma motivação sincera
20:47
is very important for our future well-being,
233
1232000
3000
20:50
or deep sense of well-being as humans,
234
1235000
3000
ou senso profundo de bem-estar como humanos,
20:53
and I think that means sinking in
235
1238000
3000
20:56
to whatever it is you're doing now.
236
1241000
2000
20:58
Whatever work you're trying to do now to benefit the world,
237
1243000
2000
21:00
sink into that,
238
1245000
2000
dedique-se a ele,
21:02
get a full taste of that.
239
1247000
2000
tenha uma experiência completa dele.
21:40
TD: So, since we've been here this week,
240
1285000
2000
TD: Então, nessa semana que aqui estivemos
21:42
we've taken millions of breaths, collectively,
241
1287000
4000
nós respiramos milhões de vezes, coletivamente,
21:47
and perhaps we haven't witnessed
242
1292000
2000
e talvez ainda não tenhamos testemunhado
21:49
any course changes
243
1294000
2000
nenhuma mudança
21:51
happening in our lives,
244
1296000
2000
acontecendo em nossas vidas,
21:53
but we often miss the very subtle changes.
245
1298000
3000
21:56
And I think
246
1301000
3000
E eu acho
21:59
that sometimes we develop
247
1304000
2000
que às vezes nós desenvolvemos
22:01
grand concepts
248
1306000
2000
grandes conceitos
22:03
of what happiness
249
1308000
2000
sobre como a felicidade
22:05
might look like for us,
250
1310000
2000
deve se parecer para nós,
22:07
but that, if we pay attention,
251
1312000
2000
mas isto, se prestarmos atenção,
22:09
we can see that there are little symbols of happiness
252
1314000
3000
22:12
in every breath that we take.
253
1317000
2000
em cada vez que respiramos.
23:21
TD: So, every one of you who has come here
254
1386000
3000
23:24
is so talented,
255
1389000
2000
é tão talentoso,
23:26
and you have so much to offer to the world,
256
1391000
3000
23:30
I think it would be a good note to conclude on then
257
1395000
4000
23:34
to just take a moment
258
1399000
3000
seria apenas parar um momento
23:37
to appreciate how fortunate we are
259
1402000
2000
para apreciar como somos afortunados
23:39
to have come together in this way and exchanged ideas
260
1404000
3000
23:42
and really form a strong aspiration
261
1407000
2000
e realmente formar uma forte aspiração
23:44
and energy within ourselves
262
1409000
2000
e energia dentro de nós mesmos
23:46
that we will take the good
263
1411000
2000
que levará a bondade
23:48
that has come from this conference,
264
1413000
2000
que veio desta conferência,
23:50
the momentum, the positivity,
265
1415000
3000
o momentum, a positividade,
23:53
and we will spread that and plant it
266
1418000
2000
e iremos espalhar e plantar isto
23:55
in all of the corners of the world.
267
1420000
3000
em todos os cantos do mundo.
24:18
His Holiness the Karmapa: Tomorrow is my Talk.
268
1443000
3000
Sua Santidade o Karmapa: Amanhã é minha palestra.
24:32
TD: Lakshmi has worked incredibly hard,
269
1457000
3000
TD: Lakshmi tem trabalhando muito duro,
24:35
even in inviting me,
270
1460000
2000
até em me convidar,
24:37
let alone everything else that she has done
271
1462000
2000
24:39
to make this happen,
272
1464000
2000
para fazer isto acontecer,
24:41
and I was somewhat resistant at times,
273
1466000
3000
24:44
and I was also very nervous throughout this week.
274
1469000
3000
24:47
I was feeling under the weather and dizzy and so forth,
275
1472000
3000
Eu estava me sentindo mal e tonto e assim em diante,
24:50
and people would ask me, why.
276
1475000
2000
e as pessoas me perguntavam, por que.
24:52
I would tell them, "It's because I have to talk tomorrow."
277
1477000
3000
24:57
And so Lakshmi had to put up with me through all of that,
278
1482000
3000
25:00
but I very much appreciate
279
1485000
2000
mas eu apreciei muito
25:02
the opportunity she's given me
280
1487000
2000
a oportunidade que ela me deu
25:04
to be here.
281
1489000
2000
de estar aqui.
25:06
And to you, everyone, thank you very much.
282
1491000
3000
E a vocês todos, muito obrigado.
