ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Andrew Bird - Musician
Andrew Bird is a virtual one-man band -- he’s a singer and songwriter and plays the violin, guitar, glockenspiel.

Why you should listen

Andrew Bird began to play the violin at age 4, learning to play Bach and Mozart by ear as if they were folk tunes. Though raised on classical repertoire, he still has little use for the written note and spins melody and words out of his cumulative experience, mixing elements of many genres without confining itself to any one in particular. While his early work with his band Bowl of Fire was influenced by pre-war jazz and showcased his violin skills, his sound began to evolve in an indie-folk direction after he went solo. But indie-folk -- or any single genre -- is just a backbone for a swirl of loops, samples and gorgeously rich instrumentation underpinning lyrics of mysterious import.

In 2002, Bird flew his Chicago coop for rural Illinois to live the rural life (yes, he had chickens) and set up his studio in a converted barn. This new environment inspired his 2003 solo album, Weather Systems, which has a surreal quality and poetic, thought-provoking lyrics. His sound progressed further with his 2005 album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, which used multitrack recorders and loop pedals to layer samples, and featured more guitar, whistling and glockenspiel. Bird released his fifth solo album, Noble Beast, in early 2009 to acclaim; he's now working on a film score and an art installation.

07:58
And then -- okay, this is where we get to the songcanção --
67
463000
3000
E então -- ok, então é aqui que se encaixa a música
08:01
kindtipo of bridgespontes the gapgap to the emotionalemocional.
68
466000
3000
que como abre um canal para as emoções.
08:04
Because althoughApesar I've used scientificcientífico termstermos
69
469000
3000
Porque, embora tenhamos usado termos centíficos
08:07
in songsmúsicas,
70
472000
2000
em músicas,
08:09
it's very difficultdifícil sometimesas vezes to make them lyricallírico.
71
474000
3000
por vezes é muito difícil torná-las poéticas.
08:12
And there's some things
72
477000
2000
E há algumas coisas
08:14
you just don't need to have in songsmúsicas.
73
479000
3000
que simplesmente não são necessárias em músicas
08:18
So I'm tryingtentando to bridgeponte this gapgap
74
483000
2000
Então estou tentando fazer esta ligação
08:20
betweenentre this ideaidéia and this melodymelodia.
75
485000
3000
entre esta ideia e esta melodia.
08:23
And so, I don't know if you've ever had this,
76
488000
3000
E, então, não sei se já passaram por isso,
08:26
but when I closefechar my eyesolhos sometimesas vezes
77
491000
3000
mas às vezes, quando fecho os olhos
08:29
and try to sleepdormir,
78
494000
2000
e tento dormir,
08:31
I can't stop thinkingpensando about my ownpróprio eyesolhos.
79
496000
3000
não consigo parar de pensar nos meus próprios olhos
08:34
And it's like your eyesolhos
80
499000
2000
E é como se seus olhos
08:36
startcomeçar strainingesticando to see themselvessi mesmos.
81
501000
2000
começassem a se distender para se verem a si mesmos.
08:38
That's what it feelssente like to me.
82
503000
2000
E é isto que se parece para mim
08:40
It's not pleasantagradável.
83
505000
2000
E não é agradável.
08:42
I'm sorry if I put that ideaidéia in your headcabeça.
84
507000
2000
Desculpem-me se coloquei esta ideia na vossa cabeça
08:44
(LaughterRiso)
85
509000
2000
(risos)
08:46
It's impossibleimpossível, of coursecurso, for your eyesolhos to see themselvessi mesmos,
86
511000
2000
É impossível, é claro, aos seus olhos de se verem a si mesmos,
08:48
but they seemparecem to be tryingtentando.
87
513000
3000
mas eles parecem tentar.
08:51
So that's gettingobtendo a little more closermais perto to a personalpessoal experienceexperiência.
88
516000
3000
Então isto parece chegar mais perto de uma experiência pessoal.
08:55
Or earsorelhas beingser ablecapaz to hearouvir themselvessi mesmos --
89
520000
2000
Ou orelhas sendo capazes de se escutar a si mesmas
08:57
it's just impossibleimpossível.
90
522000
2000
É simplesmente impossível;
08:59
That's the thing.
91
524000
2000
E este é o ponto.
09:01
So, I've been workingtrabalhando on this songcanção
