ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Yves Rossy - Jetman
With a jet-powered wing attached to his body, Yves Rossy expands the possibilities of human flight.

Why you should listen

On May 7 of this year, Swiss pilot Yves Rossy stepped out of a helicopter 8,000 feet above the Grand Canyon and ... took off. Wearing a rigid wing powered by four model jet turbine engines, Rossy flew for eight minutes over the mile-deep trench, soaring over the red rocks before parachuting down to the Colorado River far below. It's the latest exploit in a life powered by one dream: to fly like a bird.

Wearing his single wing, Rossy really flies, steering with the movements of his body. In the last couple of years he has crossed the English Channel, flown over the Swiss Alps and performed aerobatic loops around a hot-air balloon; for his next quest, he is developing a new kind of parachute that will enable him to fly as low as 200 meters.

That's the realreal importantimportante thing about safetysegurança.
142
551000
3000
É isto que é realmente importante
quanto à segurança.
09:29
I did use that
143
554000
2000
Eu usei isto nos últimos 15 anos,
09:31
duringdurante these last 15 yearsanos

never with that typetipo of wingasa, but at the beginningcomeçando.
146
560000
3000
— nunca com este tipo de asa,
mas no início.
09:38
I can releaselançamento my wingasa
147
563000
3000
Posso soltar a minha asa
09:41

e depois mergulhaste nas nuvens

09:51
and in the oceanoceano.
152
576000
2000
09:53
So that was one of those casescasos where you let the wingsasas go, right?
153
578000
3000
Foi esse um dos casos
em que soltaste as asas, certo?
09:56
YRYR: Yeah. I did try in [the] cloudsnuvens,
154
581000
3000
YR: Sim. Realmente, tentei, mas, nas nuvens,
09:59
but you loseperder [orientationorientação completelycompletamente].
155
584000
3000
perde-se a orientação completamente.
10:02
So I did try to take, again,

Por isso tentei, de novo,
ganhar altitude.
10:04
a climbescalar altitudealtitude.
157

10:07
I thought, okay, I will go out.
158
592000
2000
Pensei, ok, vou subir.
10:09
But mosta maioria probablyprovavelmente I did something like that.
159
594000
4000
Mas muito provavelmente fiz algo assim e...
10:13
BGBG: Something that is not very safeseguro in imageimagem.
160
598000

BG: Algo que não parece
muito seguro nas imagens.
10:16
YRYR: But you feel great,
161
601000
2000
YR: Sentimo-nos muito bem,
mas não temos a altitude certa.
10:18
but you have not the right altitudealtitude.
162
603000
5000
(Risos)
10:23
So the nextPróximo thing I saw was just blueazul.
163
608000
3000
Por isso o que vi a seguir foi apenas azul.
10:26
It was the seamar.
164
611000
2000
Era o mar.
10:28
I have alsoAlém disso an audibleAudible altimeterAltímetro.
165
613000
2000
Tenho também um altímetro sonoro.
10:30
So I was at my minimummínimo altitudealtitude

615000
3000
Então, estava na minha altitude mínima
10:33
in that vectorVector -- fastvelozes --

naquele vector — rápido —
10:36

por isso puxei.
10:38
And then I did openaberto my chutepara-quedas.
169
623000

E então abri o meu pára-quedas.
10:40
BGBG: So the wingsasas have theirdeles ownpróprio parachutepára-quedas, and you have your two parachutespara-quedas.
170
625000
3000
BG: Então as asas têm um pára-quedas
e tu tens dois pára-quedas.
10:43
YRYR: ExactlyExatamente. There is a rescueresgatar parachutepára-quedas for the wingasa
171
628000

10:46
for two reasonsrazões:

10:57
This is riskyarriscado stuffcoisa indeedde fato.
176
642000
2000
Isto é algo arriscado, na verdade.
10:59
People have diedmorreu tryingtentando to do this kindtipo of thing.
177
644000
3000
Houve quem morresse
a tentar fazer este tipo de coisas.
11:02
And you don't look like a crazylouco guy; you're a SwissSuíço airlineCIA aérea pilotpiloto,
178
647000
3000
E tu não pareces um tipo maluco;
és um piloto de aviação suíço,
11:05
so you're ratherem vez a checklistlista de verificação kindtipo of guy.
179
650000
3000
por isso és mais do tipo de fazer tudo
com método e rigor.
11:08
I assumeassumir you have standardspadrões.
180
653000
2000
Parto do princípio que tens padrões.
11:10
YRYR: Yeah. I have no checklistlista de verificação for that.
181
655000
3000
YR: Sim. Não tenho
lista de verificação para isto.
11:13
BGBG: Let's not tell you employerentidade patronal.
182
658000
3000
(Risos)

11:16
YRYR: No, that's really two worldsos mundos.
183
661000
3000

11:20
CivilCivil aviationaviação is something that we know very well.
184
665000
3000
A aviação civil é algo
que conhecemos muito bem.
11:23
We have a hundredcem yearsanos of experienceexperiência.
185
668000
3000
Temos cem anos de experiência.
11:26
And you can adaptadaptar really preciselyprecisamente.
186
671000
4000
E conseguimos adaptar-nos com precisão.
11:30
With that,
187
675000
2000
Com isto, tenho de me adaptar a algo novo.
11:32
I have to adaptadaptar to something newNovo.
188
677000
2000
11:34
That meanssignifica improviseimprovisar.
189
679000
2000
Isso significa improvisar.
11:36
So it's really a playToque betweenentre these two approachesse aproxima.
190
681000
3000
Por isso é realmente um jogo
entre estas duas abordagens.
11:39
Something that I know very well --
191
684000
2000
Uma coisa que eu conheço muito bem
11:41
these principlesprincípios, for exampleexemplo,
192
686000
2000
— estes princípios, por exemplo,
11:43
we have two enginesmotores on an AirbusAirbus;
193
688000
2000
temos dois motores num Airbus;
11:45
with only one enginemotor, you can flymosca it.
194
690000
2000
mas podemos voar só com um motor.
11:47
So planplano B, always a planplano B.
195
692000
3000
Por isso o plano B, ter sempre um plano B.
11:50
In a fighterlutador, you have an ejectionejeção seatassento.
196
695000

Num caça, temos um banco ejectável.
11:52
That's my ejectionejeção seatassento.
197
697000

Isto é o meu banco ejectável.
11:54
So I have the approachabordagem of a professionalprofissional pilotpiloto

699000

de um piloto profissional

BGBG: It's well said. It's well said.
201
710000
3000
BG: Muito bem dito. Muito bem dito.
12:08
What happensacontece if one of the enginesmotores stopspára?
202
713000
3000
O que acontece se um dos motores parar?
12:11
YRYR: I do a rolllista.
203
716000
4000
YR: Faço um parafuso.
12:15
And then I stabilizeestabilizar,
204
720000
2000
Depois estabilizo,
12:17
and accordingde acordo com to my altitudealtitude,
205
722000
2000
e conforme a minha altitude,
continuo com dois ou três motores.
12:19
I continuecontinuar on two or threetrês enginesmotores.
206
724000
2000
12:21
It's sometimesas vezes possiblepossível --
207

it's quitebastante complicatedcomplicado to explainexplicar --

— é bastante complicado de explicar —
12:26
but accordingde acordo com to whichqual regimeregime I was,

731000

mas conforme o regime em que eu estava,
12:30
I can continuecontinuar on two

735000

posso continuar com dois
12:32

211
737000
3000
tentar encontrar um bom local para aterrar,
e então abrir o meu pára-quedas.
12:35
BGBG: So the beginningcomeçando of the flightvoar
212
740000
2000
BG: Então, o início do voo é saltar
dum avião ou dum helicóptero,
12:37
is actuallyna realidade you jumpsaltar off a planeavião or a helicopterhelicóptero,
213
742000
2000
12:39
and you go on a divemergulho and accelerateacelerar the enginesmotores,
214
744000
3000
seguir num mergulho e acelerar os motores,
12:42
and then you basicallybasicamente take off mid-airmeio-ar somewherealgum lugar.
215
747000
3000
e depois voar em pleno ar, algures.
12:45
And then the landingaterrissagem, as we have seenvisto,
216
750000
2000
Depois a aterragem, como vimos,
12:47

217
752000

a chegada a este lado do canal,
12:49

218
754000
2000
é através de um pára-quedas.
12:51
So just as a curiositycuriosidade,
219
756000
2000
Só como curiosidade,
12:53
where did you landterra when you flewvoou over the GrandGrand CanyonCanyon?

onde é que aterraste

Did you landterra on the rimaro, down at the bottominferior?

761000

Aterraste na margem, lá em baixo?
12:59
YRYR: It was down on the bottominferior.
222
764000
2000
YR: Foi lá em baixo.
13:01
And I cameveio back afterwarddepois
223
766000

no patim do helicóptero.
13:03
on the sledtrenó of the helicopterhelicóptero back.
224

13:10
BGBG: That's exactlyexatamente why I askedperguntei the questionquestão.
226
775000
2000

que fiz a pergunta.
13:12
YRYR: And alsoAlém disso the currentscorrentes are quitebastante funnyengraçado there.
227
777000
5000
YR: E também porque as correntes de ar
são bastante estranhas lá.
13:17
There is biggrande thermaltérmica activityatividade,

782000
2000
Há uma grande actividade termal,
13:19
biggrande differencediferença in altitudealtitude alsoAlém disso.

13:21
So it was much safermais segura for me to landterra at the bottominferior.
230

aterrar lá em baixo.
