ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ramona Pierson - Education innovator
Ramona Pierson develops tools to revolutionize learning management and assessment systems -- her fourth career after aviation, neuropsychology and software development.

Why you should listen

Ramona Pierson first built careers in aviation, neuropsychology and software development. While studying and examining and learning the details of such diverse disciplines, she became interested in the act of learning itself. She volunteered in a San Francisco school while working full-time in Silicon Valley and, just like that, a fourth career was born.

Pierson completed a master’s degree in education in California, then headed north to take the reins of the education technology department for Seattle Public Schools. She combined her passions and expertise to create software that, in a nutshell, helps teachers teach better. In 2007, Ramona launched a private company with the same goal. SynapticMash Inc. was launched to revolutionize the learning management and assessment systems in education.

A self-described “data geek,” Pierson contemplated ways to push education and technology through a paradigm shift — to move from web 2.0 to web 3.0. Now the CEO of Declara, Ramona continues to study the act of learning and to explore ways to make our education system work better for students.

02:40
The hospitalhospital really has no ideaidéia

Na verdade o hospital não sabe

02:44

para reparar o meu coração umas quantas vezes.

59

Algumas coisas resultaram, outras não.
02:58
I had lots of titaniumtitânio put in me,

62
167000
3000
03:05
And I endedterminou up with a plasticplástico nosenariz, porcelainporcelana teethdentes
63
170000
2000
03:07
and all kindstipos of other things.
64
172000
2000
e uma variedade de outras coisas.
03:09
But eventuallyeventualmente I startedcomeçado to look humanhumano again.
65
174000
3000
Mas, eventualmente, comecei a parecer humana outra vez.
03:18
But it's hardDifícil sometimesas vezes to talk about these things,
66
183000
2000
03:20
so bearUrso with me.
67
185000
3000
por isso sejam pacientes.
03:23
I had more than 50 surgeriescirurgias.
68
188000
2000
Eu tive mais de 50 cirurgias.
03:25
But who'squem é countingcontando?
69
190000
3000
Mas quem está a contar?
03:28
So eventuallyeventualmente, the hospitalhospital decideddecidiu
70
193000
2000
Então um dia, o hospital decidiu
03:30
it was time for me to go.
71
195000
2000
que estava na hora de ter alta.
03:32
They needednecessário to openaberto up spaceespaço
72
197000
2000
Eles precisavam de ter espaço
03:34
for somebodyalguém elseoutro that they thought could come back
73
199000
4000
03:38
from whatevertanto faz they were going throughatravés.
74
203000
3000
fosse do que fosse daquilo que estava a passar.
03:41
EverybodyToda a gente lostperdido faith in me beingser ablecapaz to recoverrecuperar.
75
206000
3000
03:44
So they basicallybasicamente put a mapmapa up on the wallparede, threwjogou a dartdardo,
76
209000
3000
03:47
and it landeddesembarcou at a seniorSenior home here in ColoradoColorado.
77
212000
5000
03:52
And I know all of you are scratchingcoçar your headcabeça:
78
217000
2000
03:54
"A seniorSenior citizens'cidadão home? What in the worldmundo are you going to do there?"
79
219000
3000
"Um lar de idosos? Mas o que raio é que foste fazer para lá?"
03:57
But if you think about
80
222000
2000
Mas se pensarem nisso
03:59
all of the skillsHabilidades and talenttalento that are in this roomquarto right now,
81
224000
3000
04:02
that's what a seniorSenior home has.
82
227000
2000
é o que um lar de idosos tem.
04:04
So there were all these skillsHabilidades and talentstalentos
83
229000
2000
Então lá estavam essas capacidades e talentos
04:06
that these seniorsidosos had.
84
231000
3000
que aqueles idosos tinham.
04:09
The one advantagevantagem that they had over mosta maioria of you
85
234000
2000
04:11
is wisdomsabedoria,
86
236000
2000
é a sabedoria,
04:13
because they had a long life.
87
238000
3000
porque tiveram uma vida longa.
04:16
And I needednecessário that wisdomsabedoria at that momentmomento in my life.
88
241000
2000
E eu precisava daquela sabedoria naquele momento da minha vida.
04:18
But imagineImagine what it was like for them
89
243000
2000
Mas imaginem o que foi para eles
04:20
when I showedmostrou up at theirdeles doorstepporta?
90
245000
3000
quando eu lhes apareci à porta?
04:23
At that pointponto, I had gainedganhou fourquatro poundslibras,
91
248000
2000
Naquela altura, tinha engordado 2 kg,
04:25
so I was 68 lbslbs.
92
250000
2000
pesava quase 31 kg.
04:27
I was baldcareca.
93
252000
2000
Estava careca.
04:29
I was wearingvestindo hospitalhospital scrubsesfoliantes.
94
254000
2000
Estava vestida com uma bata de hospital.
04:31
And somebodyalguém donateddoou tennistênis shoessapatos for me.
95
256000
3000
04:34
And I had a whitebranco canecana-de- in one handmão
96
259000
3000
E tinha uma bengala branca numa mão
04:37
and a suitcasemala fullcheio of medicalmédico recordsregistros in anotheroutro handmão.
97
262000
3000
04:40
And so the seniorSenior citizenscidadãos realizedpercebi
98
265000
3000
E então os idosos perceberam
04:43
that they needednecessário to have an emergencyemergência meetingencontro.
99
268000
2000
04:45
(LaughterRiso)
100
270000
2000
(Risos)
04:47
So they pulledpuxado back and they were looking at eachcada other,
101
272000
3000
04:50
and they were going, "Okay, what skillsHabilidades do we have in this roomquarto?
102
275000
4000
e diziam, "Ok, que capacidades temos nós aqui nesta sala?
04:54
This kidcriança needsprecisa a lot of work."
103
279000
3000
Esta miúda precisa de ser muito trabalhada."
04:57
So they eventuallyeventualmente startedcomeçado
104
282000
2000
Então finalmente começaram
04:59
matchingcorrespondência theirdeles talentstalentos and skillsHabilidades
105
284000
2000
a agrupar os seus talentos e capacidades
05:01
to all of my needsprecisa.
106
286000
2000
a todas as minhas necessidades.
05:03
But one of the first things they needednecessário to do
107
288000
2000
05:05
was assessavaliar what I needednecessário right away.
108
290000
2000
foi avaliar o que eu precisava imediatamente.
05:07
I needednecessário to figurefigura out
109
292000
2000
Eu precisava de aprender
05:09
how to eatcomer like a normalnormal humanhumano beingser,
110
294000
2000
a comer como um ser humano normal,
05:11
sinceDesde a I'd been eatingcomendo throughatravés a tubetubo in my chestpeito
111
296000
3000
05:14
and throughatravés my veinsveias.
112
299000
2000
e pelas minhas veias.
05:16
So I had to go throughatravés tryingtentando to eatcomer again.
113
301000
3000
05:19
And they wentfoi throughatravés that processprocesso.
114
304000
2000
E eles passaram por esse processo.
05:21
And then they had to figurefigura out:
115
306000
2000
E depois eles tiveram de resolver:
05:23
"Well she needsprecisa furnituremobília.
116
308000
2000
"Bem, ela precisa de mobiliário.
05:25
She is sleepingdormindo in the cornercanto of this apartmentapartamento."
117
310000
3000
Ela está a dormir no canto deste apartamento."
05:28
So they wentfoi to theirdeles storagearmazenamento lockersarmários
118
313000
2000
E eles foram aos seus armazéns
05:30
and all gatheredcoletado theirdeles extraextra furnituremobília --
119
315000
2000
05:32
gavedeu me potspotenciômetros and panspanelas, blanketscobertores,
120
317000
3000
deram-me tachos e frigideiras, cobertores,
05:35
everything.
121
320000
3000
tudo.
05:38
And then the nextPróximo thing that I needednecessário
122
323000
2000
05:40
was a makeovermaquilagem.
123
325000
3000
era de uma transformação.
05:43
So out wentfoi the greenverde scrubsesfoliantes
124
328000
2000
Por isso desapareceram as batas verdes
05:45
and in cameveio the polyesterpoliéster and floralfloral printsimprime.
125
330000
3000
e apareceram os padrões florais e o poliéster.
05:48
(LaughterRiso)
126
333000
3000
(Risos)
05:53
We're not going to talk about the hairstylespenteados that they triedtentou to forceforça on me
127
338000
3000
05:56
onceuma vez my haircabelo grewcresceu back.
128
341000
2000
quando o meu cabelo voltou a crescer.
05:58
But I did say no to the blueazul haircabelo.
129
343000
2000
06:00
(LaughterRiso)
130
345000
3000
(Risos)
06:04
So eventuallyeventualmente what wentfoi on
131
349000
3000
Então, o que acabou por acontecer
06:07
is they decideddecidiu that, well I need to learnaprender to speakfalar.
132
352000
3000
06:10
So you can't be an independentindependente personpessoa
133
355000
2000
Portanto, não podemos ser pessoas independentes
06:12
if you're not ablecapaz to speakfalar and can't see.
134
357000
3000
06:15
So they figuredfigurado not beingser ablecapaz to see is one thing,
135
360000
3000
06:18
but they need to get me to talk.
136
363000
2000
mas precisavam de me pôr a falar.
06:20
So while SallySally, the officeescritório managerGerente,
137
365000
3000
E enquanto a Sally, a gerente do escritório,
06:23
