ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marcus Byrne - Entomologist
Marcus Byrne is fascinated by the way insects, particularly the intrepid dung beetle, have hardwired solutions to the challenges posed by their environments. Could they help humans solve problems?

Why you should listen

Marcus Byrne is professor of zoology and entomology at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa. His research explores what humans can learn from insects. One of the big questions he's focused on: how can we control alien weeds, which threaten biodiversity? Byrne believes that insects may hold the 'magic bullet' for how to restrain the growth of these plants, which jockey for resources with native flora and fauna.

Byrne's work has also focused on the unique mechnics of the dung beetle. His research has shown that the dung beetle has a highly effective visual navigation system, that allows them to roll balls of animal dung with precision back to their home, even in the dark of night and the hottest of conditions. Byrne wonders: can this beetle teach humans how to solve complex visual problems?

(Filmado no TEDxWitsUniversity.)

03:06
that makesfaz com que the beetlesbesouros so well-adaptedbem adaptado

03:13
So what you've got to imagineImagine here is this animalanimal here

Então o que vocês têm que imaginar aqui
é este animal
03:15

03:30
This is AfricaÁfrica. It's hotquente.
61

Isto é África. Está calor.
03:32
So what I want to sharecompartilhar with you now
62
196663

Então o que eu quero partilhar convosco agora
03:34
are some of the experimentsexperiências that myselfEu mesmo and my colleaguescolegas
63
198370

são algumas das experiências que
eu e os meus colegas
03:37
have used to investigateinvestigar how dungestrume beetlesbesouros

como os escaravelhos
03:42
dealacordo with these problemsproblemas.
65
206386

lidam com estes problemas.
03:44
So watch this beetlebesouro,
66

Observem este escaravelho,
03:46
and there's two things that I would like you to be awareconsciente of.
67
210975
4144
e existem duas coisas que gostaria que notassem.
03:51
The first is how it dealspromoções with this obstacleobstáculo
68
215119
2562
A primeira é como ele lida com este obstáculo
03:53
that we'venós temos put in its way. See, look, it does a little dancedança,
69
217681
2888
que nós colocámos no seu caminho.
Vejam, ele faz uma pequena dança
03:56
and then it carriescarrega on in exactlyexatamente the samemesmo directiondireção
70
220569
2934
e depois ele continua exactamente
na mesma direcção
03:59
that it tooktomou in the first placeLugar, colocar.
71
223503
3690
que tomou no início.
04:03
A little dancedança, and then headscabeças off in a particularespecial directiondireção.
72
227193
3766
Uma pequena dança, e depois lá vai ele
numa direcção em particular.
04:06
So clearlyclaramente this animalanimal knowssabe where it's going
73
230959
3377
Portanto, claramente este animal sabe
para onde se dirige
04:10
and it knowssabe where it wants to go,
74
234336
1339
e sabe aonde quer ir
04:11
and that's a very, very importantimportante thing,
75
235675
1885
o que é uma coisa muito, muito importante
04:13
because if you think about it, you're at the dungestrume pilepilha,
76
237560
2415
porque se pensarem nisso,
vocês estão na pilha de excremento
04:15
you've got this great biggrande pietorta that you want to get away from everybodytodo mundo elseoutro,
77
239975
4523
têm este enorme bolo que vocês querem levar
para longe de qualquer outro ser
04:20
and the quickestmais rápido way to do it is in a straightdireto linelinha.
78
244498
2893
e a forma mais rápida de fazer isso
é em linha recta.
04:23
So we gavedeu them some more taskstarefas to dealacordo with,
79
247391
4379
Então nós demos-lhes mais algumas
tarefas para resolverem
04:27
and what we did here is we turnedvirou the worldmundo
80
251770
4160
e o que nós fizemos aqui, foi virar o mundo
04:31
undersob theirdeles feetpés. And watch its responseresposta.
81
255930
3679
debaixo dos pés deles.
E vejam a resposta.
04:41
So this animalanimal has actuallyna realidade had the wholetodo worldmundo
82
265287
2796
Então este animal fica na verdade
com o mundo todo
04:43
turnedvirou undersob its feetpés. It's turnedvirou by 90 degreesgraus.
83
268083
2847
virado debaixo dos seus pés.
Foi virado 90 graus.
04:46
But it doesn't flinchvacilou. It knowssabe exactlyexatamente where it wants to go,
84
270930
2472
Mas ele não vacila. Ele sabe exactamente
para onde tem de ir
04:49
and it headscabeças off in that particularespecial directiondireção.
85
273402
2968
e dirige-se para uma direcção em particular.
04:52
So our nextPróximo questionquestão then was,
86
276370
2192
Então a nossa próxima questão foi:
04:54
how are they doing this?
87
278562
1960
Como é que eles fazem isto?
04:56
What are they doing? And there was a cuecue that was availableacessível to us.
88
280522
3449
O que é que eles estão a fazer?
E havia uma pista à nossa frente.
04:59
It was that everycada now and then they'deles climbescalar on toptopo of the ballbola
89
283971
3127
Era que, de vez em quando, eles subiam
ao topo da bola
05:02
and they'deles take a look at the worldmundo around them.
90
287098
2632
e davam uma vista de olhos em redor.
05:05
And what do you think they could be looking at
91
289730
1720
E o que é que vocês acham que eles
poderiam estar a ver
05:07
as they climbescalar on toptopo of the ballbola?
92
291450
1676
quando subiam ao topo da bola?
05:09
What are the obviousóbvio cuessugestões that this animalanimal could use
93
293126
3555
Quais eram as pistas óbvias que
este animal poderia usar
05:12
to directdireto its movementmovimento? And the mosta maioria obviousóbvio one
94
296681
4178
para direccionar o seu movimento?
E a pista mais óbvia
05:16
is to look at the skycéu, and so we thought,
95
300859
4219
era olhar para o céu, e então nós pensámos:
05:20
now what could they be looking at in the skycéu?
96
305078
2264
"O que é que eles estariam a olhar para o céu?"
05:23
And the obviousóbvio thing to look at is the sundom.
97
307342
4109
E a coisa mais óbvia para se olhar é o sol.
05:27
So a classicclássico experimentexperimentar here,
98
311451
2954
Portanto, uma experiência clássica aqui
05:30
in that what we did was we movedse mudou the sundom.
99
314405
3539
em que o que nós fizemos foi mover o sol.
05:33
What we're going to do now is shadesombra the sundom with a boardborda
100
317944
2741
O que faremos agora é escurecer o sol
com uma tábua
05:36
and then movemover the sundom with a mirrorespelho
101
320685
1970
e depois mover o sol com um espelho
05:38
to a completelycompletamente differentdiferente positionposição.
102
322655
1866
para uma posição completamente diferente.
05:40
And look at what the beetlebesouro does.
103
324521
1912
E reparem no que o escaravelho faz.
05:42
It does a little doubleDuplo dancedança,
104
326433
2831
Ele faz uma pequena dupla dança
05:45
and then it headscabeças back in exactlyexatamente the samemesmo directiondireção
105
329264
2279
e depois dirige-se de volta exactamente
na mesma direcção
05:47
it wentfoi in the first placeLugar, colocar.
106
331543
2409
da qual veio no início.
05:49
What happensacontece now? So clearlyclaramente they're looking at the sundom.
107
333952
3727
O que acontece agora? Então, claramente,
eles estão a olhar para o sol.
05:53
The sundom is a very importantimportante cuecue in the skycéu for them.
108
337679
3262
O sol é uma pista muito importante
no céu para eles.
05:56
The thing is the sundom is not always availableacessível to you,
109
340941
2625
O problema é que o sol nem sempre
está disponível
05:59
because at sunsetpor do sol it disappearsdesaparece belowabaixo the horizonhorizonte.
110
343566
4416
porque ao pôr-do-sol, ele desaparece no horizonte.
06:03
What is happeningacontecendo in the skycéu here
111
347982
2584
O que acontece no céu aqui
06:06
is that there's a great biggrande patternpadronizar of polarizedpolarizado lightluz in the skycéu
112
350566
3659
é que há um padrão muito grande de
luz polarizada no céu
06:10
that you and I can't see. It's the way our eyesolhos are builtconstruído.
113
354225
3751
que nós não conseguimos ver. É da forma
como os nossos olhos são feitos.
06:13
But the sundom is at the horizonhorizonte over here
114
357976
3703
Mas o sol está no horizonte aqui
06:17
and we know that when the sundom is at the horizonhorizonte,
115
361679
2967
e nós sabemos que quando
o sol está no horizonte,
06:20
say it's over on this sidelado,
116
364646
1544
digamos que está neste lado,
06:22
there is a north-southnorte Sul, a hugeenorme pathwaycaminho acrossatravés the skycéu
117
366190
4585
existe um norte-sul, um caminho enorme

06:26

2473
de luz polarizada que não conseguimos ver
06:29
that the beetlesbesouros can see.
119
373248
2798
e que os escaravelhos conseguem.
06:31
So how do we testteste that? Well, that's easyfácil.
120
376046
2859
Então como é que testamos isso?
Bem, isso é fácil.
06:34
What we do is we get a great biggrande polarizationpolarização filterfiltro,
121
378905
2942
O que nós fazemos é colocar um
filtro de polarização enorme
06:37
poppop the beetlebesouro underneathpor baixo it, and the filterfiltro is at right anglesângulos
122
381847
4424
colocar o escaravelho debaixo dele, e o filtro
está nos ângulos certos
06:42
to the polarizationpolarização patternpadronizar of the skycéu.
123
386271
2650
para os padrões de polarização do céu.
06:44
The beetlebesouro comesvem out from underneathpor baixo the filterfiltro
124

O escaravelho sai debaixo do filtro
06:48
and it does a right-handmão direita turnvirar,
125
393091
2503
e faz uma curva à direita
06:51
because it comesvem back undersob the skycéu
126
395594
2194
porque ele sai debaixo do céu
06:53
that it was originallyoriginalmente orientatedorientado para to
127
397788
2819
de que estava originalmente orientado
06:56
and then reorientatesreorientates itselfem si back
128

e depois reorienta-se de novo
06:58
to the directiondireção it was originallyoriginalmente going in.
129
402952
3922
para a direcção que deveria originalmente ir.
07:02
So obviouslyobviamente beetlesbesouros can see polarizedpolarizado lightluz.
130
406874
5817
Então obviamente os escaravelhos
conseguem ver luz polarizada.
07:08
Okay, so what we'venós temos got so farlonge is,
131
412691
2757
Ok, então o que nós temos até agora é,
07:11
what are beetlesbesouros doing? They're rollingrolando ballsBolas.
132
415448
2776
o que é que os escaravelhos estão a fazer?
Eles estão a rolar bolas.
07:14
How are they doing it? Well, they're rollingrolando them in a straightdireto linelinha.
133
418224
3015
Como estão a fazê-lo?
Bem, estão a rolá-las em linha recta.
07:17
How are they maintainingmantendo it in a particularespecial straightdireto linelinha?
134
421239
3578
Como é que eles as mantêm numa
linha recta em particular?
07:20
Well, they're looking at celestialcelestial cuessugestões in the skycéu,
135
424817
2695
Bem, eles estão a olhar para as
pistas celestiais no céu
07:23
some of whichqual you and I can't see.
136
427512
2244
algumas das quais vocês e eu
não conseguimos ver.
07:25
But how do they pickescolher up those celestialcelestial cuessugestões?
137
429756
1684
Mas como é que eles apanham
estas pistas celestiais?
07:27
That was what was of interestinteresse to us nextPróximo.
138
431440
3044
Isto era o que nos interessava a seguir.
07:30
And it was this particularespecial little behaviorcomportamento, the dancedança,
139
434484
3188
E foi esse pequeno comportamento
particular, a dança
07:33
that we thought was importantimportante, because look,
140
437672
2919
que nós pensámos que seria importante,
porque, olhem...
07:36
it takes a pausepausa everycada now and then,
141
440591
1556
ele faz uma pausa de vez em quando
07:38
and then headscabeças off in the directiondireção that it wants to go in.
142
442147
4479
e depois dirige-se na direcção em que quer ir.
07:42
So what are they doing when they do this dancedança?
143
446626
4237
Então o que estão eles a fazer quando
fazem esta dança?
07:46
How farlonge can we pushempurrar them before they will reorientatereorientar themselvessi mesmos?
144
450863
4342
Quão longe podemos empurrá-los antes de
eles se voltarem a reorientar?
07:51
And in this experimentexperimentar here, what we did was we forcedforçado them
145
455205
3496
E nesta experiência aqui,
o que nós fizemos foi forçá-los
07:54
into a channelcanal, and you can see he wasn'tnão foi
146
458701
2662
a irem para um canal, e podem ver que ele não foi
07:57
particularlyparticularmente forcedforçado into this particularespecial channelcanal,
147
461363
2738
particularmente forçado para dentro
deste canal em particular,
08:00
and we graduallygradualmente displaceddeslocado the beetlebesouro by 180 degreesgraus
148
464101
5298
e deslocámos gradualmente o escaravelho
em 180 graus
08:05
untilaté this individualIndividual endstermina up going in exactlyexatamente the oppositeoposto directiondireção
149
469399
3736
até que este indivíduo acaba por ir na direcção
exactamente oposta
08:09
that it wanted to go in, in the first placeLugar, colocar.
150
473135
2565
que queria seguir inicialmente.
08:11
And let's see what his reactionreação is
151
475700
2801
E vamos ver qual será a sua reacção
08:14
as he's headedencabeçou throughatravés 90 degreesgraus here,
152
478501
2610
conforme se dirige através dos 90 graus aqui,
08:17
and now he's going to -- when he endstermina up down here,
153
481111
2104
e agora ele dirige-se para...
...quando ele termina aqui
08:19
he's going to be 180 degreesgraus in the wrongerrado directiondireção.
154
483215
3047
ele vai estar 180 graus na direcção errada.
08:22
And see what his responseresposta is.
155
486262
2298
E vamos ver qual é a resposta dele.
08:24
He does a little dancedança, he turnsgira around,
156
488560
3193
Ele faz uma pequena dança, ele dá uma volta
08:27
and headscabeças back in this. He knowssabe exactlyexatamente where he's going.
157
491753
3734
e volta para trás. Ele sabe exactamente
para onde se dirige.
08:31
He knowssabe exactlyexatamente what the problemproblema is,
158
495487
2279
Ele sabe exactamente qual é o problema
08:33
and he knowssabe exactlyexatamente how to dealacordo with it,
159
497766
1595
e ele sabe exactamente como lidar com ele
08:35
and the dancedança is this transitiontransição behaviorcomportamento
160
499361
2701
e a dança neste comportamento de transição
08:37
that allowspermite them to reorientatereorientar themselvessi mesmos.
161
502062
2809
é que lhes permite reorientarem-se.
08:40
So that's the dancedança, but after spendinggastos manymuitos yearsanos
162
504871
4792
Então esta é a dança, mas depois de
gastarmos muitos anos
08:45
sittingsentado in the AfricanAfricano busharbusto watchingassistindo dungestrume beetlesbesouros on nicebom hotquente daysdias,
163
509663
3656
sentados nos arbustos de África a observar
os escaravelhos em dias bonitos e quentes,
08:49
we noticednotado that there was anotheroutro behaviorcomportamento
164
513319
2351
nós reparámos que havia outro comportamento
08:51
associatedassociado with the dancedança behaviorcomportamento.
165
515670
2489
associado ao comportamento da dança.
08:54
EveryCada now and then, when they climbescalar on toptopo of the ballbola,
166
518159
3938
De vez em quando, quando eles sobem
ao topo da bola
08:57
they wipelimpe theirdeles facecara.
167
522097
3406
eles limpam a cara.
09:01
And you see him do it again.
168
525503
2963
E vocês vêem-no a fazê-lo outra vez.
09:04
Now we thought, now what could be going on here?
169
528466
2981
Então pensámos, o que poderia estar
a acontecer aqui?
09:07
ClearlyClaramente the groundchão is very hotquente, and when the groundchão is hotquente,
170
531447
2904
Claramente, o chão está muito quente,
e quando o chão está quente
09:10
they dancedança more oftenfrequentemente, and when they do this particularespecial dancedança,
171
534351
2735
eles dançam mais frequentemente,
e quando eles fazem esta dança particular
09:12
they wipelimpe the bottominferior of theirdeles facecara.
172
537086
1970
eles limpam a parte inferior da cara.
09:14
And we thought that it could be a thermoregulatorytermorregulação behaviorcomportamento.
173
539056
2699
E pensámos que isto poderia ser
um comportamento de termorregulação.
09:17
We thought that maybe what they're doing is tryingtentando to
174
541755
2010
Nós pensámos que talvez o que
eles estão a fazer é tentar
09:19
get off the hotquente soilsolo and alsoAlém disso spittingcuspindo ontopara theirdeles facecara
175
543765
3441
sair do solo quente e também cuspir
para as suas caras
09:23
to coollegal theirdeles headcabeça down.
176
547206
2416
como forma de a arrefecer.
09:25
So what we did was designdesenhar a couplecasal of arenasArenas.
177
549622
4442
Então o que nós fizemos foi umas arenas
09:29
one was hotquente, one was coldfrio.
178
554064
2099
uma era quente, a outra era fria.
09:32
We shadedsombreado this one. We left that one hotquente.
179
556163
2377
Colocamos uma sombra nesta.
Deixámos a outra quente.
09:34
And then what we did was we filmedfilmado them with a thermaltérmica cameraCâmera.
180
558540
3467
E depois o que fizemos foi filmá-los com
uma câmara térmica.
09:37
So what you're looking at here is a heatcalor imageimagem
181
562007
4416
Então o que vêem aqui é uma imagem do calor
09:42
of the systemsistema, and what you can see here emergingemergindo
182
566423
3921
do sistema, e o que vocês podem ver
emergir aqui
09:46
from the poococô is a coollegal dungestrume ballbola.
183
570344
3609
a partir das fezes é uma bola de excremento frio.
09:49
So the truthverdade is, if you look at the temperaturetemperatura over here,
184
573953
3279
Então a verdade é, se olharem para
a temperatura aqui
09:53
dungestrume is coollegal. (LaughterRiso)
185
577232
4980
o excremento está frio. (Risos)
09:58
So all we're interestedinteressado in here is comparingcomparando the temperaturetemperatura
186
582212
3218
Então, tudo em que estamos interessados aqui
é comparar a temperatura
10:01
of the beetlebesouro againstcontra the backgroundfundo.
187
585430
2640
do escaravelho com a do pano de fundo.
10:03
So the backgroundfundo here is around about 50 degreesgraus centigradecentígrado.
188
588070
3944
O pano de fundo aqui tem cerca de
50 graus centígrados.
10:07
The beetlebesouro itselfem si and the ballbola are probablyprovavelmente around about
189
592014
2608
O escaravelho e a bola têm, provavelmente, cerca de
10:10
30 to 35 degreesgraus centigradecentígrado,
190
594622
2071
30 a 35 graus centígrados
10:12
so this is a great biggrande ballbola of icegelo creamcreme
191
596693
2666
portanto, esta é uma grande bola de gelado
10:15
that this beetlebesouro is now transportingtransporte de acrossatravés the hotquente veldt Veld.
192
599359
3127
que este escaravelho está neste momento
a transportar através da savana.
10:18
It isn't climbingescalada. It isn't dancingdançando, because
193
602486
2703
Ele não está a subir.
Ele não está a dançar, porque
10:21
its bodycorpo temperaturetemperatura is actuallyna realidade relativelyrelativamente lowbaixo.
194
605189
2841
a sua temperatura corporal é, na verdade,
relativamente baixa.
10:23
It's about the samemesmo as yoursSua and minemeu.
195
608030
3073
É mais ou menos como a vossa ou a minha.
10:27
And what's of interestinteresse here is that little braincérebro is quitebastante coollegal.
196
611103
4964
E o mais interessante aqui é que o
seu pequeno cérebro está bastante frio.
10:31
But if we contrastcontraste now what happensacontece in a hotquente environmentmeio Ambiente,
197
616067
4307
Mas se nós contrastarmos agora com o que
acontece num ambiente quente,
10:36
look at the temperaturetemperatura of the soilsolo.
198
620374
2150
reparem na temperatura do solo.
10:38
It's up around 55 to 60 degreesgraus centigradecentígrado.
199
622524
3450
É cerca de 55 a 60 graus centígrados.
10:41
Watch how oftenfrequentemente the beetlebesouro dancesdanças.
200
625974
3442
Reparem quantas vezes o escaravelho dança.
10:45
And look at its frontfrente legspernas. They're roaringlyextraordinária hotquente.
201
629416
4542
E olhem para as suas pernas da frente.
Elas estão a ferver.
10:49
So the ballbola leavessai a little thermaltérmica shadowsombra,
202
633958
2923
Então a bola deixa uma pequena sombra térmica
10:52
and the beetlebesouro climbssobe on toptopo of the ballbola
203
636881
1934
e o escaravelho sobe ao topo da bola
10:54
and wipestoalhetes its facecara, and all the time it's tryingtentando to coollegal itselfem si down,
204
638815
4639
e limpa a cara, e a toda a hora ele está
a tentar arrefecer-se
10:59
we think, and avoidevitar the hotquente sandareia that it's walkingcaminhando acrossatravés.
205
643454
5670
achamos nós, e a evitar a areia quente
que ele está a atravessar.
11:05
And what we did then was put little bootschuteiras on these legspernas,
206
649124
3932
E o que fizemos foi colocar pequenas
botas nessas pernas
11:08
because this was a way to testteste if the legspernas
207
653056
2962
porque esta era uma forma de testar
se as pernas
11:11
were involvedenvolvido in sensingde detecção the temperaturetemperatura of the soilsolo.
208
656018
3758
estavam envolvidas em sentir a temperatura do solo.
11:15
And if you look over here, with bootschuteiras they climbescalar ontopara the ballbola
209
659776
3977
E se repararem aqui, com botas,
eles sobem ao topo da bola
11:19
farlonge lessMenos oftenfrequentemente when they had no bootschuteiras on.
210
663753
4191
muito menos vezes do que quando
não tinham as botas.
11:23
So we describeddescrito these as coollegal bootschuteiras.
211
667944
2327
Portanto, nós descrevemo-las como
botas refrescantes.
11:26
It was a dentaldental compoundcomposto that we used to make these bootschuteiras.
212
670271
2922
Foi um composto dentário que utilizámos
para criar estas botas.
11:29
And we alsoAlém disso cooledde refrigeração down the dungestrume ballbola, so we were ablecapaz
213
673193
2887
E nós também arrefecemos
a bola de excremento, conseguimos
11:31
to put the ballbola in the fridgegeladeira, gavedeu them a nicebom coollegal dungestrume ballbola,
214
676080
3649
colocar a bola num frigorífico,
dar-lhes uma bonita e fresca bola de excremento
11:35
and they climbedEscalada ontopara that ballbola farlonge lessMenos oftenfrequentemente
215
679729
2551
e eles subiram para cima da bola
bastante menos vezes
11:38
than when they had a hotquente ballbola.
216
682280
1536
do que quando tinham uma bola quente.
11:39
So this is calledchamado stiltingstilting. It's a thermaltérmica behaviorcomportamento
217
683816
2974
Isto é chamado de pernear.
É um comportamento térmico
11:42
that you and I do if we crossCruz the beachde praia,
218
686790
1908
que vocês e eu fazemos se
atravessarmos a praia
11:44
we jumpsaltar ontopara a toweltoalha, somebodyalguém has this toweltoalha --
219
688698
2718
nós saltamos para a toalha,
alguém tem uma toalha
11:47
"Sorry, I've jumpedsaltou ontopara your toweltoalha." --
220
691416
1223
— "Desculpe, eu saltei para a sua toalha." —
11:48
and then you scuttleSabidão acrossatravés ontopara somebodyalguém else'soutros toweltoalha,
221
692639
2564
e depois vocês procuram outra toalha qualquer
11:51
and that way you don't burnqueimar your feetpés.
222
695203
2205
e dessa forma vocês não queimam os pés.
11:53
And that's exactlyexatamente what the beetlesbesouros are doing here.
223
697408
2801
E é exactamente o que os escaravelhos fazem.
11:56
HoweverNo entanto, there's one more storyhistória I'd like to sharecompartilhar with you,

This is a dungestrume beetlebesouro. Watch what he's doing.

716959
4660
Este é um escaravelho-do-excremento.
Vejam o que ele está a fazer.
12:17
Can you spotlocal the differencediferença?
230
721619
2690
Conseguem reparar na diferença?
12:20
They don't normallynormalmente go this slowlylentamente. It's in slowlento motionmovimento.
231
724309
3232
Eles normalmente não andam tão devagar.
Isto é em câmara lenta
12:23
but it's walkingcaminhando forwardspara a frente,
232
727541
1794
mas está a andar para a frente
12:25
and it's actuallyna realidade takinglevando a pelletpelota of dryseco dungestrume with it.
233
729335
3561
e com isso, está, na verdade,
a formar uma bola de excremento.
12:28
This is a differentdiferente speciesespécies in the samemesmo genusGênero

mas com exactamente
o mesmo comportamento de pilhagem.
12:35
There's one more interestinginteressante aspectaspecto of this
236
739222
2791
Há mais um importante aspecto sobre o
12:37
dungestrume beetle'sdo besouro behaviorcomportamento that we foundencontrado quitebastante fascinatingfascinante,
237
742013
4303
comportamento deste escaravelho que
nós achamos bastante fascinante
12:42
and that's that it foragesforragem seca and provisionsdisposições a nestninho.
238
746316
4506
e que é ele forrar e aprovisionar um ninho.
12:46
So watch this individualIndividual here, and what he's tryingtentando to do

750822

Vejam este indivíduo aqui.
O que ele está a tentar fazer
12:49
is setconjunto up a nestninho.

é fazer um ninho.
12:52
And he doesn't like this first positionposição,

e cerca de 50 minutos mais tarde,
o ninho está terminado
12:59
and he headscabeças off to forageforragem and provisionprovisão
244
763422
3727
e ele afasta-se para forrar e aprovisionar
13:03
at a pilepilha of dryseco dungestrume pelletspelotas.
245

numa pilha de bolas secas de excremento.
13:05
And what I want you to noticeaviso prévio is the outwardaperfeiçoamento passivo pathcaminho

E no que eu quero que reparem é
o caminho de saída

Comparem os dois.
13:13
And by and largeampla, you'llvocê vai see that the homewardHomeward pathcaminho

777278

Em geral, verão que o caminho de chegada

is farlonge more directdireto than the outwardaperfeiçoamento passivo pathcaminho.
249
779938
2831
é bastante mais directo do que
o caminho de saída.
13:18

253
789600
3218
e quer ir directo a ela.
13:28
The importantimportante thing here is that this is not a one-waySó de ida tripviagem,
254
792818
3575
O importante aqui é que esta não é
uma viagem só de ida
13:32
as in mosta maioria dungestrume beetlesbesouros. The tripviagem here is repeatedrepetido
255
796393
3390
como na maioria dos escaravelhos-do-excremento.
A viagem repete-se
13:35
back and forthadiante betweenentre a provisioningprovisionamento sitelocal and a nestninho sitelocal.
256
799783
4305
para a frente e para trás entre
uma dispensa e um ninho.
13:39
And watch, you're going to see
257
804088
942
E olhem, vocês vão ver
13:40
anotheroutro SouthSul AfricanAfricano crimecrime takinglevando placeLugar, colocar right now. (LaughterRiso)
258
805030
4010
outro crime sul-africano mesmo a acontecer.
(Risos)
13:44
And his neighborvizinho stealsrouba one of his dungestrume pelletspelotas.
259
809040
4614
E o vizinho rouba uma das bolas de excremento.
13:49
So what we're looking at here
260
813654
3137
E o que vocês vão ver aqui
13:52
is a behaviorcomportamento calledchamado pathcaminho integrationintegração.
261
816791
3328
é um comportamento chamado
caminho da integração.
13:56
And what's takinglevando placeLugar, colocar is that the beetlebesouro
262
820119
2617
E o que está a acontecer é que o escaravelho
13:58
has got a home spotlocal, it goesvai out on a convolutedcheio de pompa pathcaminho
263
822736
4303
tem uma casa, de onde sai
por um caminho tortuoso
14:02
looking for foodComida, and then when it findsencontra foodComida,
264
827039
3091
à procura de alimento, e quando encontra o alimento
14:06
it headscabeças straightdireto home. It knowssabe exactlyexatamente where its home is.
265
830130
4308
volta para casa.
Ele sabe exactamente onde é a casa.
14:10
Now there's two waysmaneiras it could be doing that,
266
834438
3025
Existem duas formas de ele poder fazer isto
14:13
and we can testteste that by displacingdeslocando the beetlebesouro
267
837463
2960
e nós podemos testá-lo colocando o escaravelho
14:16
to a newNovo positionposição when it's at the foragingforrageamento sitelocal.
268
840423
2697
numa nova posição, quando está
no local de pilhagem.
14:19
If it's usingusando landmarksMarcos, it will find its home.
269
843120
3294
Usando pontos de referência, ele encontra
o caminho para casa.
14:22
If it is usingusando something calledchamado pathcaminho integrationintegração,
270
846414
3415
Se usar algo chamado caminho de integração,
14:25
it will not find its home. It will arrivechegar at the wrongerrado spotlocal,
271
849829
3784
ele não vai encontrar o caminho para casa.
Ele vai chegar a um local errado
14:29
and what it's doing here if it's usingusando pathcaminho integrationintegração
272
853613
2424
e o que ele faz aqui, estando a usar
o caminho de integração,
14:31
is it's countingcontando its stepspassos or measuringmedindo the distancedistância out in this directiondireção.
273
856037
3871
é estar a contar os passos ou a medir a distância
nesta direcção.
14:35
It knowssabe the bearingtendo home, and it knowssabe it should be in that directiondireção.
274
859908
3697
Sabe ir para casa, e sabe que deveria ir
naquela direcção.
14:39
If you displacedeslocar it, it endstermina up in the wrongerrado placeLugar, colocar.
275
863605
3128
Se o mudarem de sítio, ele acaba no local errado.
14:42
So let's see what happensacontece when we put this beetlebesouro
276
866733
2577
Vamos ver o que acontece quando
pomos este escaravelho
14:45
to the testteste with a similarsemelhante experimentexperimentar.
277
869310
3316
à prova com uma experiência parecida.
14:48
So here'saqui está our cunningastúcia experimenterexperimentador.
278
872626
4386
Aqui está o nosso astuto investigador.
14:52
He displacesdesloca the beetlebesouro,
279
877012
2401
Ele muda o escaravelho de sítio
14:55
and now we have to see what is going to take placeLugar, colocar.
280
879413
4849
e agora vemos o que acontece.
15:00
What we'venós temos got is a burrowBurrow. That's where the forageforragem was.
281
884262
3094
O que temos aqui é uma toca.
Era onde estava a forragem.
15:03
The forageforragem has been displaceddeslocado to a newNovo positionposição.
282
887356
2947
A forragem foi mudada para uma nova posição.
15:06
If he's usingusando landmarkMarco orientationorientação,
283
890303
2359
Se ele estiver a usar pontos de referência
como orientação
15:08
he should be ablecapaz to find the burrowBurrow,
284
892662
1760
deve ser capaz de encontrar a toca
15:10
because he'llinferno be ablecapaz to recognizereconhecer the landmarksMarcos around it.
285
894422
2723
porque ele é capaz de reconhecer
os pontos de referência em redor dela.
15:13
If he's usingusando pathcaminho integrationintegração,
286
897145
3043
Se ele estiver a usar o caminho de integração
15:16
then it should endfim up in the wrongerrado spotlocal over here.
287
900188
3724
então deve terminar neste local errado.
15:19
So let's watch what happensacontece
288
903912
2310
Então vamos ver o que acontece
15:22
when we put the beetlebesouro throughatravés the wholetodo testteste.
289
906222
3291
quando testamos o escaravelho.
15:25
So there he is there.
290
909513
1996
Aqui está ele.
15:27
He's about to headcabeça home, and look what happensacontece.
291
911509
6260
Ele está a prestes a ir para casa,
e vejam o que acontece.
15:33
ShameVergonha.
292
917769
2493
Que vergonha.
15:36
It hasn'tnão tem a cluepista.
293
920262
2234
Ele não faz a mais pequena ideia.
15:38
It startscomeça to searchpesquisa for its housecasa in the right distancedistância
294
922496
2920
Ele começa a procurar pela casa
pela distância correcta
15:41
away from the foodComida, but it is clearlyclaramente completelycompletamente lostperdido.
295
925416
5975
em relação ao alimento, mas ele está
claramente perdido.
15:47
So we know now that this animalanimal usesusa pathcaminho integrationintegração
296
931391
4218
Sabemos então que este animal usa
o caminho de integração
15:51
to find its way around, and the callousinsensível experimenterexperimentador
297
935609
4079
para encontrar o seu caminho,
e o insensível investigador
15:55
leadsconduz it toptopo left and leavessai it. (LaughterRiso)
298
939688
3121
leva-o ao topo esquerdo e larga-o. (Risos)
15:58
So what we're looking at here are a groupgrupo of animalsanimais
299
942809
4055
Então o que vemos aqui é um grupo de animais
16:02
that use a compassbússola, and they use the sundom as a compassbússola
300
946864
2079
que usam uma bússola, e usam o sol
como uma bússola
16:04
to find theirdeles way around,
301
948943
1640
para encontrar o seu caminho
16:06
and they have some sortordenar of systemsistema
302
950583
2525
e têm algum tipo de sistema
16:09
for measuringmedindo that distancedistância,
303
953108
1963
para medir essa distância,
16:10
and we know that these speciesespécies here actuallyna realidade
304
955071
3337
e sabemos que esta espécie aqui
16:14
countcontagem the stepspassos. That's what they use as an odometerodómetro,
305
958408
2681
conta mesmo os passos.
É o que eles usam como um odómetro,
16:16
a step-countingcontagem da etapa systemsistema, to find theirdeles way back home.
306
961089
5137
um sistema de contar passos,
para encontrar o seu caminho de volta a casa.
16:22
We don't know yetainda what dungestrume beetlesbesouros use.
307
966226
2823
Ainda não sabemos o que
os escaravelhos-do-excremento usam.
16:24
So what have we learnedaprendido from these animalsanimais
308
969049
2279
Então o que aprendemos com estes animais
16:27
with a braincérebro that's the sizeTamanho of a graingrão of ricearroz?
309
971328
3001
com um cérebro do tamanho de um grão de arroz?
16:30
Well, we know that they can rolllista ballsBolas in a straightdireto linelinha
310
974329
4111
Bem, sabemos que conseguem rolar bolas
em linha recta
16:34
usingusando celestialcelestial cuessugestões.
311
978440
2145
usando pistas celestiais.
16:36
We know that the dancedança behaviorcomportamento is an orientationorientação behaviorcomportamento
312
980585
3128
Sabemos que a dança é
um comportamento de orientação
16:39
and it's alsoAlém disso a thermoregulationtermorregulação behaviorcomportamento,
313
983713
2414
e também um comportamento termorregulador
16:42
and we alsoAlém disso know that they use a pathcaminho integrationintegração systemsistema
314
986127
4198
e também sabemos que usam um sistema
de caminho de integração
16:46
for findingencontrando theirdeles way home.
315
990325
2089
para encontrarem o seu caminho para casa.
16:48

316
992414

Para um animal pequeno que lida com

16:52
we can actuallyna realidade learnaprender an awfulhorrível lot from these things
317
996584

podemos realmente aprender uma enorme

a fazer comportamentos que nem vocês
