ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paul MacCready - Engineer
Paul MacCready, an aircraft designer and environmentalist, is a pioneer of human-powered flight, alternative energy for transportation, and environmentally responsible design.

Why you should listen

Through his life, Paul MacCready turned his mind, energy and heart toward his two passions: flight and the Earth. His early training as a fighter and glider pilot (glider pilots still use the "MacCready speed ring" he developed after World War II) led him to explore nontraditional flight and nontraditional energy sources.

In the 1970s, he and his company, AeroVironment, designed and built two record-breaking human-powered planes: the Gossamer Condor, the first human-powered aircraft to complete a one-mile course set by the Kremer Prize, and the Gossamer Albatross, the first to cross the English Channel. The planes' avian names reveal the deep insight that MacCready brought to the challenge -- that large birds, in their wing shape and flying style, possess an elegant secret of flight.

He then turned his wide-ranging mind toward environmentally responsible design, informed by his belief that human expansion poses a grave threat to the natural world. His team at AeroVironment prototyped an electric car that became General Motors' pioneering EV-1. They explored alternative energy sources, including building-top wind turbines. And they developed a fleet of fascinating aircraft -- including his Helios solar-powered glider, built to fly in the very top 2 percent of Earth's atmosphere, and the 2005 Global Observer, the first unmanned plane powered by hydrogen cells.

03:01
The thing that is excitingemoționant was, in 1976,
34
156000
5000
Partea interesantă este că în 1976

I suddenlybrusc got interestedinteresat in the human-poweredomului-puternic airplaneavion
35
161000
5000
03:11
because I'd madefăcut a madefăcut a loanîmprumut to a friendprieten of 100,000 dollarsdolari,
36
166000
4000
pentru că împrumutasem 100,000 de dolari unui prieten,
03:15

He neededNecesar them -- he neededNecesar the moneybani for startingpornire a companycompanie.
38

4000
03:21
The companycompanie did not succeeda reusi, and he couldn'tnu a putut paya plati the moneybani back,
39
176000
3000
03:24
and I was the guarantorgarant of the noteNotă. So, I had a $100,000 debtcreanţă,
40
179000
5000
03:29
and I noticeda observat that the KramerKramer prizepremiu for human-poweredomului-puternic flightzbor,
41
184000
6000
03:35
whichcare had then been around for -- (LaughterRâs) --

03:46
So suddenlybrusc, I was interestedinteresat in human-poweredomului-puternic flightzbor --

50
221000
4000
şi am renunţat. Mi-am spus că nu există o soluţie simplă.
04:10
But then, got off on a vacationvacanta tripexcursie, and was studyingstudiu birdpasăre flightzbor,
51
225000
6000
04:16
just for the fundistracţie of it,
52

doar ca să mă distrez,
04:18

04:46
But that begana început thinkinggândire about how birdspăsări wenta mers around,
61
261000
5000
04:51
and then how airplanesavioane would, how hangatârna glidersplanoare would flya zbura,
62
266000
7000
04:58
and then other planesavioane,
63
273000
2000
şi alte aparate de zbor,
05:00
and the ideaidee of the Gossamer-Condor-typeDiafan-Condor-tip airplaneavion quicklyrepede emergeda apărut,
64
275000
6000
05:06
was so logicallogic, one should have thought of it in the first placeloc,
65
281000
3000
05:09
but one didn't. And it was just, keep the weightgreutate down --
66
284000
4000
dar nu fusese. Şi ideea era doar sa reduci greutatea -
05:13
70 poundslire sterline was all it weighedcântărit -- but let the sizemărimea swellse umfla up, like a hangatârna gliderplanor,
67
288000
7000
05:20
but threeTrei timesori the spandeschidere, threeTrei timesori the cordcordon.
68
295000
2000
dar să fie de trei ori mai lat.
05:22
You're down to a thirdal treilea of the speedviteză, a thirdal treilea of the powerputere,
69
297000
3000
05:25
and a good bicyclistbiciclist can put out that powerputere, and that workeda lucrat,
70
300000
7000
05:32
and we woncastigat the prizepremiu a yearan latermai tarziu.
71
307000
5000
iar an mai târziu am câştigat premiul.
05:37
We didn't -- a lot of flyingzbor, a lot of experimentsexperimente, a lot of things that didn't work,
72
312000
6000
Desigur, am avut multe tentative nereuşite, zboruri şi experimente,
05:43
and onescele that did work, and the planeavion keptținut gettingobtinerea a little better, a little better.
73
318000
5000
05:48
Got a good pilotpilot, BrianBrian AllenAllen, to operatea functiona it,
74
323000
3000
05:51
and finallyin sfarsit, succeededreușit. But unfortunatelydin pacate,
75
326000
4000
şi în final, am reuşit. Dar din nefericire,
05:55
about 65,000 dollarsdolari was spenta petrecut on the projectproiect.
76
330000
4000
cheltuisem deja 65.000 de dolari pe proiect.
05:59
(LaughterRâs)
77
334000
2000
(Râsete)
06:01
And there was only about 30 to help retireretrage the debtcreanţă.
78
336000
4000
06:05
But fortunatelydin fericire, HenryHenry KramerKramer, who put up the prizepremiu for --
79
340000
4000
06:09
that was a one-mileunul de mile flightzbor -- put up a newnou prizepremiu
80
344000
2000
06:11
for flyingzbor the EnglishEngleză ChannelCanal, 21 milesmile.
81
346000
3000
06:14
And he thought it would take anothero alta 18 yearsani for somebodycineva to wina castiga that.
82
349000
4000
06:18
We realizedrealizat that if you just cleanedcurățate up our GossamerDiafan CondorCondor a little bitpic,
83
353000
6000
Ne-am dat seama că dacă am reduce greutatea Gossamer Condor-ului nostru,
06:24
the powerputere to flya zbura would be decreaseds-a diminuat a little bitpic,
84
359000
4000
06:28
and if you decreasescădea the powerputere requirednecesar a little,
85
363000
3000
şi dacă reduci puţin propulsia necesară,
06:31
the pilotpilot can flya zbura a much longermai lung periodperioadă of time.
86
366000
3000
pilotul poate zbura mult mai mult timp.
06:34
And BrianBrian AllenAllen was ablecapabil, in a miraculousmiraculos flightzbor,
87
369000
4000
06:38
to get the GossamerDiafan AlbatrossAlbatros acrosspeste the EnglishEngleză ChannelCanal,
88
373000
4000
să treacă avionul Gossamer Albatross peste Canalul Mânecii,
06:42
and we woncastigat the 100,000-pound-livră, 200,000-dollar-dolar prizepremiu for that.
89
377000
7000
06:49
And when all expensescheltuielile were paidplătit, the debtcreanţă was handledmanipulate, and everything was fine.
90
384000
8000
06:57
It turnedîntoarse out that givingoferindu- the planesavioane to the museummuzeu
91
392000
3000
Am descoperit că, dacă dăm avioanele la muzeu
07:00
was worthin valoare de much more than the debtcreanţă,
92
395000
4000
07:04
so for fivecinci yearsani, sixşase yearsani, I only had to paya plati one thirdal treilea incomesursa de venit taxfiscale.
93
399000
7000
07:11
So, there were good economiceconomic reasonsmotive for the projectproiect, but --
94
406000
5000
07:16
(LaughterRâs) --
95
411000
3000
(Râsete) -
07:19
that's not, well, the projectproiect was doneTerminat entirelyîn întregime for economiceconomic reasonsmotive,
96
414000
7000
07:26
and we have not been involvedimplicat in any human-poweredomului-puternic flightzbor sincede cand then --
97
421000
4000
07:30
(LaughterRâs) --
98
425000
2000
(Râsete) -
07:32
because the prizespremii are all over.
99
427000
3000
pentru că premiile s-au luat deja.
07:36
(LaughterRâs)
100
431000
1000
(Râsete)
07:37
But that sure starteda început me thinkinggândire about variousvariat things,
101
432000
4000
07:41
and immediatelyimediat, we begana început makingluare a solar-poweredalimentat cu energie solara planeavion
102
436000
5000
07:46
because we feltsimțit solarsolar powerputere was going to be so importantimportant
103
441000
3000
07:49
for the countryțară and the worldlume,
104
444000
2000
pentru ţară şi pentru întreaga lume,
07:51
we didn't want the smallmic fundingfinanțarea in the governmentGuvern to be decreaseds-a diminuat,
105
446000
5000
07:56
whichcare is what the governmentGuvern was tryingîncercat to do with it.
106
451000
2000
07:58
And we thought a solar-poweredalimentat cu energie solara planeavion wouldn'tnu ar fi really make sensesens,
107
453000
5000
08:03
but you could do it and it would get a lot of publicitypublicitate for solarsolar powerputere
108
458000
4000
08:07
and maybe help that fieldcamp.
109
462000
2000
ceea ce ar ajuta acest domeniu.
08:09
And that projectproiect continueda continuat, did succeeda reusi,

As the windvânt comesvine up, it has to go over the cliffstâncă, so
277

Curentul ascendent trebuie să treacă peste stâncă, deci
