ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Harald Haas - Communications technology innovator
Harald Haas is the pioneer behind a new technology that can communicate as well as illuminate.

Why you should listen

Imagine using your car headlights to transmit data ... or surfing the web safely on a plane, tethered only by a line of sight. Harald Haas is working on it. He currently holds the Chair of Mobile Communications at the University of Edinburgh, and is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of pureLiFi Ltd as well as the Director of the LiFi Research and Development Center at the University of Edinburgh. His main research interests are in optical wireless communications, hybrid optical wireless and RF communications, spatial modulation, and interference coordination in wireless networks.

Haas has long been studying ways to communicate electronic data signals, designing modulation techniques that pack more data onto existing networks. But his latest work leaps beyond wires and radio waves to transmit data via an LED bulb that glows and darkens faster than the human eye can see. His group published the first proof-of-concept results demonstrating that it is possible to to turn commercially available light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs into broadband wireless transmission systems.

"It should be so cheap that it's everywhere," he says. "Using the visible light spectrum, which comes for free, you can piggy-back existing wireless services on the back of lighting equipment."

03:17
In this boxcutie is a standardstandard,
off-the-shelfraft LED lamplampă.
48
185095
4388
În această casetă avem un bec normal LED.
03:23
This is a standardstandard,
off-the-shelfraft solarsolar cellcelulă;
49
191193
2575
Acesta este o celulă solară
care se găsește în magazine,
03:25
it is connectedconectat to the laptoplaptop.
50
193792
2183
conectată la un laptop.
03:28
And alsode asemenea we have an instrumentinstrument here
51
196949
2320
Mai avem şi un instrument aici
03:31
to visualizeimagina the energyenergie
we harvestrecolta from the solarsolar cellcelulă.
52
199293
3778
pentru vizualizarea energiei
recoltată din celula solară.
03:35
And this instrumentinstrument showsspectacole
something at the momentmoment.
53
203095
2798
Acest instrument arată
ceva în acest moment,
03:37
This is because the solarsolar cellcelulă alreadydeja
harvestsrecoltele lightușoară from the ambientAmbient lightușoară.
54
205917
4281
deoaree celula solară a început deja
să recolteze lumină din ambient.
03:43
Now what I would like to do first
is switchintrerupator on the lightușoară,
55
211102
2840
Mai întâi vreau să aprind lumina
pentru o clipă.
03:45
and I'll simplypur şi simplu, only switchintrerupator on the lightușoară,
56
213966
2106
03:48
for a momentmoment,
57
216096
2108
03:50
and what you'llveți noticeînștiințare is that
the instrumentinstrument jumpssalturi to the right.
58
218228
3994
Veți observa
că instrumentul sare la dreapta.
03:54
So the solarsolar cellcelulă, for a momentmoment,
59
222904
1690
Deci, pentru o clipă, celula solară
recoltează energia
03:56
is harvestingrecoltare energyenergie
from this artificialartificial lightușoară sourcesursă.
60
224618
3522
din această sursă de lumină artificială.
04:00
If I turnviraj it off, we see it dropspicături.
61
228540
3278
Dacă sting lumina, vom vedea că scade.
04:03
I turnviraj it on ...
62
231842
1183
Aprind... Recoltăm energie
cu celula solară.
04:05
So we harvestrecolta energyenergie with the solarsolar cellcelulă.
63
233049
2719
04:08
But nextUrmător → I would like to activateactiva
the streamingStreaming of the videovideo.
64
236586
5323
Mai departe, aș dori să activez
transmisia unui video.
04:15
And I've doneTerminat this
by pressingpresare this buttonbuton.
65
243418
2324
Și am făcut acest lucru
prin apăsarea unui buton.
04:17
So now this LED lamplampă here
is streamingStreaming a videovideo
66
245766
4723
Deci, acum, acest bec LED
transmite un videoclip
schimbând luminozitatea
LED-ului într-un mod foarte subtil,
04:22
by changingschimbare the brightnessluminozitate of the LED
in a very subtlesubtil way,
67
250513
4132
04:26
and in a way that you can't
recognizerecunoaşte with your eyeochi,
68
254669
2498
într-un mod care nu poate
fi recunoscut cu ochiul liber
04:29
because the changesschimbări
are too fastrapid to recognizerecunoaşte.
69
257191
3256
deoarece schimbările
sunt prea rapide să fie recunoscute.
04:33
But in orderOrdin to provedovedi the pointpunct,
70
261384
2399
Dar pentru a demonstra
punctul meu de vedere,
04:35
I can blockbloc the lightușoară of the solarsolar cellcelulă.
71
263807
3145
o să blochez lumina celulei solare.
Deci în primul rând veți observa
că recoltarea de energie scade
04:40
So first you noticeînștiințare
the energyenergie harvestingrecoltare dropspicături
72
268087
3223
și video-ul se oprește, de asemenea.
04:43
and the videovideo stopsopriri as well.
73
271334
1692
04:45
If I removeelimina the blockageblocaj,
the videovideo will restartrepornire.
74
273050
3656
Dacă elimin blocajul,
video-ul va porni din nou.
04:49
(ApplauseAplauze)
75
277357
6229
(Aplauze)
04:55
And I can repeatrepeta that.
76
283610
2333
Și pot repeta acest lucru.
04:57
So we stop the transmissiontransmisie of the videovideo
and energyenergie harvestingrecoltare stopsopriri as well.
77
285967
5251
Dacă oprim transmisia video,
recoltarea de energie
se oprește, de asemenea.
05:03
So that is to showspectacol that the solarsolar cellcelulă
actsacte as a receiverreceptor.
78
291242
4408
Asta arată că celula solară
acționează ca un receptor.
05:08
But now imagineimagina that this LED lamplampă
is a streetstradă lightușoară, and there's fogceaţă.
79
296079
5384
Acum, imaginați-vă că becul cu LED-uri
e o lampă de stradă pe timp de ceață.
05:14
And so I want to simulatesimula fogceaţă,
80
302106
2303
Pentru a simula ceața,
am adus o batistă cu mine. (Râsete)
05:16
and that's why I broughtadus

81
304433
2743
05:19
(LaughterRâs)
82
307200

Dacă pun batista peste celula solară,
05:20
And let me put the handkerchiefbatistă
over the solarsolar cellcelulă.
83
308656
3960
05:25
First you noticeînștiințare
84
313905
1628
în primul rând observați

05:27
the energyenergie harvestedrecoltate dropspicături, as expectedașteptat,

cum era de așteptat,
05:31
but now the videovideo still continuescontinuă.
86
319778

dar video-ul continuă sa fie emis.
05:34
This meansmijloace, despitein ciuda the blockageblocaj,
87

Înseamnă că, în ciuda blocajului,
există suficientă lumină
05:37
there's sufficientsuficiente lightușoară comingvenire throughprin

90
334856

în acest caz,

05:51
What's really importantimportant here is that

e că o celulă solară
