ABOUT THE SPEAKER
George Dyson - Historian of science
In telling stories of technologies and the individuals who created them, George Dyson takes a clear-eyed view of our scientific past -- while illuminating what lies ahead.

Why you should listen

The development of the Aleutian kayak, its adaptation by Russians in the 18th and 19th centuries, and his own redevelopment of the craft in the 1970s was chronicled in George Dyson’s Baidarka: The Kayak of 1986. His 1997 Darwin Among the Machines: The Evolution of Global Intelligence (“the last book about the Internet written without the Internet”) explored the history and prehistory of digital computing and telecommunications as a manifestation of the convergent destiny of organisms and machines.

Project Orion: The True Story of the Atomic Spaceship, published in 2002, assembled first-person interviews and recently declassified documents to tell the story of a path not taken into space: a nuclear-powered spaceship whose objective was to land a party of 100 people on Mars four years before we landed two people on the Moon. Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe, published in 2012, illuminated the transition from numbers that mean things to numbers that do things in the aftermath of World War II.

Dyson’s current project, Analogia, is a semi-autobiographical reflection on how analog computation is re-establishing control over the digital world.

This yearan I'm going to tell you the storypoveste of the birthnaștere of digitaldigital computingtehnica de calcul.

Anul acesta vă voi povesti istoria apariţiei calculatoarelor digitale.

Asta a fost o introducere perfectă.
00:35
And it's a storypoveste that did work. It did happenîntâmpla,
7
23000
2000
Şi e o istorie care a fost sa fie. Ea s-a produs,
00:37
and the machinesmaşini are all around us.
8
25000
2000
şi maşinile sunt pretutindeni în jurul nostru.
00:39
And it was a technologytehnologie that was inevitableinevitabil.

Şi era o tehnologie care era inevitabilă.
00:43
If the people I'm going to tell you the storypoveste about,

11
33000
2000
dacă ei n-ar fi făcut-o, altcineva avea s-o facă.
00:47
So, it was sortfel of the right ideaidee at the right time.
12

Aşa că oarecum era ideea potrivită la momentul potrivit.

I'm startingpornire the storypoveste with the first atomicatomic bombbombă at TrinityTrinity,

5000
01:07
whichcare was the ManhattanManhattan ProjectProiect. It was a little bitpic like TEDTED:
17
55000
2000
şi care era parte a proiectului Manhattan. Era un pic ca TED:
01:09
it broughtadus a wholeîntreg lot of very smartinteligent people togetherîmpreună.
18
57000
3000
a adunat foarte mulţi oameni isteţi împreună.
01:12
And threeTrei of the smartestdeștept people were
19
60000
2000
Şi trei din cei mai isteţi erau
01:14
StanStan UlamUlam, RichardRichard FeynmanFeynman and JohnIoan vonvon NeumannNeumann.
20
62000
4000
Stan Ulam, Richard Reyman şi John von Neumann,
01:18
And it was VonVon NeumannNeumann who said, after the bombbombă,
21
66000
2000
01:20
he was workinglucru on something much more importantimportant than bombsbombe:
22
68000
4000
01:24
he's thinkinggândire about computerscalculatoare.
23
72000
2000
se gândea la computere.
01:26
So, he wasn'tnu a fost only thinkinggândire about them; he builtconstruit one. This is the machinemaşină he builtconstruit.
24
74000
4000
Asta-i maşina construită de el.
01:30
(LaughterRâs)
25
78000
4000
(Hohote de râs)
01:34
He builtconstruit this machinemaşină,
26
82000
2000
A construit această maşină,
01:36
and we had a beautifulfrumoasa demonstrationdemonstrație of how this thing really workslucrări,
27
84000
3000
şi avem o demonstraţie minunată despre cum funcţionează,
01:39
with these little bitsbiți. And it's an ideaidee that goesmerge way back.
28
87000
3000
01:42
The first personpersoană to really explainexplica that
29
90000
3000
Prima persoană care a explicat asta
01:45
was ThomasThomas HobbesHobbes, who, in 1651,
30
93000
3000
era Thomas Hobbes care în 1651
01:48
explaineda explicat how arithmeticaritmetic and logiclogică are the samela fel thing,
31
96000
3000
01:51
and if you want to do artificialartificial thinkinggândire and artificialartificial logiclogică,
32
99000
3000
01:54
you can do it all with arithmeticaritmetic.
33
102000
2000
o puteţi face cu aritmetica.
01:56
He said you neededNecesar additionplus and subtractionscăderea.
34
104000
4000
02:00
LeibnizLeibniz, who camea venit a little bitpic latermai tarziu -- this is 1679 --
35
108000
4000
02:04
showeda arătat that you didn't even need subtractionscăderea.
36
112000
2000
a demonstrat ca scăderea nu e necesară.
02:06
You could do the wholeîntreg thing with additionplus.
37
114000
2000
Puteţi face totul cu adunarea.
02:08
Here, we have all the binarybinar arithmeticaritmetic and logiclogică
38
116000
3000
Iată întreaga aritmetică şi logică binară
02:11
that drovea condus the computercomputer revolutionrevoluţie.
39
119000
2000
care a propulsat revoluţia computerelor,
02:13
And LeibnizLeibniz was the first personpersoană to really talk about buildingclădire suchastfel de a machinemaşină.
40
121000
4000
02:17
He talkeda vorbit about doing it with marblesmarmura,
41
125000
2000
Vorbea de realizarea ei cu bile,
02:19
havingavând gatesporti and what we now call shiftschimb registersregistre,
42
127000
2000
02:21
where you shiftschimb the gatesporti, dropcădere brusca the marblesmarmura down the trackspiese.
43
129000
3000
02:24
And that's what all these machinesmaşini are doing,
44
132000
2000
Şi asta-i tot ce fac aceste maşini,
02:26
exceptcu exceptia, insteadin schimb of doing it with marblesmarmura,
45
134000
2000
cu excepţia că în loc de bile,
02:28
they're doing it with electronselectroni.
46
136000
2000
ele fac asta cu ajutorul electronilor.
02:30
And then we jumpa sari to VonVon NeumannNeumann, 1945,
47
138000
4000
Şi apoi sărim la von Neumann, 1945,
02:34
when he sortfel of reinventsreinventeaza the wholeîntreg samela fel thing.
48
142000
2000
când el oarecum reinventează întreaga teorie.
02:36
And 1945, after the warrăzboi, the electronicsElectronică existeda existat
49
144000
3000
Şi 1945, după război, existau electronice
02:39
to actuallyde fapt try and buildconstrui suchastfel de a machinemaşină.
50
147000
3000
02:42
So JuneIunie 1945 -- actuallyde fapt, the bombbombă hasn'tnu are even been droppedscăzut yetinca --
51
150000
4000
Iunie 1945. De fapt bomba încă n-a fost aruncată,
02:46
and VonVon NeumannNeumann is puttingpunând togetherîmpreună all the theoryteorie to actuallyde fapt buildconstrui this thing,
52
154000
4000
02:50
whichcare alsode asemenea goesmerge back to TuringTuring,
53
158000
2000
care de asemenea ne duce la Turing,
02:52
who, before that, gavea dat the ideaidee that you could do all this
54
160000
3000
02:55
with a very brainlessdescreierat, little, finitefinit statestat machinemaşină,
55
163000
4000
02:59
just readingcitind a tapebandă in and readingcitind a tapebandă out.
56
167000
3000
03:02
The other sortfel of genesisgeneză of what VonVon NeumannNeumann did
57
170000
3000
03:05
was the difficultydificultate of how you would predictprezice the weathervreme.
58
173000
4000
era dificultatea prognozării timpului.
03:09
LewisLewis RichardsonRichardson saw how you could do this with a cellularcelular arraymulțime of people,
59
177000
4000
03:13
givingoferindu- them eachfiecare a little chunkbucată mare, and puttingpunând it togetherîmpreună.
60
181000
3000
oferind fiecăruia o bucăţică şi apoi asamblând informaţiile.
03:16
Here, we have an electricalelectric modelmodel illustratingsă ilustreze a mindminte havingavând a will,
61
184000
3000
03:19
but capablecapabil of only two ideasidei.
62
187000
2000
dar capabilă de doar două idei.
03:21
(LaughterRâs)
63
189000
1000
(Hohote de râs).
03:22
And that's really the simplestmai simplu computercomputer.
64
190000
3000
Şi acesta-i într-adevăr cel mai simplu computer.
03:25
It's basicallype scurt why you need the qubitQubit,
65
193000
2000
03:27
because it only has two ideasidei.
66
195000
2000
deoarece are doar două idei.
03:29
And you put lots of those togetherîmpreună,
67
197000
2000
Şi când plasaţi multe de acestea împreună,
03:31
you get the essentialsEssentials of the modernmodern computercomputer:
68
199000
3000
obţineţi esenţa computerelor moderne:
03:34
the arithmeticaritmetic unitunitate, the centralcentral controlControl, the memorymemorie,
69
202000
3000
unitatea aritmetică, unitatea de control, memoria,
03:37
the recordingînregistrare mediummediu, the inputintrare and the outputproducție.
70
205000
3000
mediul de înregistrare, intrările şi ieşirile.
03:40
But, there's one catchcaptură. This is the fatalfatal -- you know,
71
208000
4000
Dar este şi un truc aici. Acesta-i fatal -- ştiţi,
03:44
we saw it in startingpornire these programsprograme up.
72
212000
3000
am văzut la lansarea acestor programe.
03:47
The instructionsinstrucțiuni whichcare governguverna this operationoperație
73
215000
2000
Instrucţiunile care guvernează operarea
03:49
musttrebuie sa be givendat in absolutelyabsolut exhaustiveexhaustivă detaildetaliu.
74
217000
2000
trebuie specificate în detaliu absolut complet.
03:51
So, the programmingprogramare has to be perfectperfect, or it won'tnu va work.
75
219000
3000
03:54
If you look at the originsoriginile of this,
76
222000
2000
Dacă priviţi la originile sale,
03:56
the classicclasic historyistorie sortfel of takes it all back to the ENIACENIAC here.
77
224000
4000
istoria clasică oarecum ne conduce înapoi spre ENIAC.
04:00
But actuallyde fapt, the machinemaşină I'm going to tell you about,
78
228000
2000
04:02

79
230000
3000

2000
ar trebui să fie aici jos. Aşa că încerc să revăd istoria.

81

04:10
SuchAstfel a computercomputer would opendeschis up universesuniversuri,
