ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Nathan Wolfe - Virus hunter
Armed with blood samples, high-tech tools and a small army of fieldworkers, Nathan Wolfe hopes to re-invent pandemic control -- and reveal hidden secrets of the planet's dominant lifeform: the virus.

Why you should listen

Using genetic sequencing, needle-haystack research, and dogged persistence (crucial to getting spoilage-susceptible samples through the jungle and to the lab), Nathan Wolfe has proven what was science-fiction conjecture only a few decades ago -- not only do viruses jump from animals to humans, but they do so all the time. Along the way Wolfe has discovered several new viruses, and is poised to discover many more.

Wolfe's research has turned the field of epidemiology on its head, and attracted interest from philanthropists at Google.org and the Skoll foundation. Better still, the research opens the door to preventing epidemics before they happen, sidelining them via early-warning systems and alleviating the poverty from which easy transmission emerges.

we mightar putea be ablecapabil to movemișcare to a situationsituatie where we can catchcaptură them earlydin timp.

01:59
OK, so this is a pictureimagine, and I'm going to showspectacol you
39
101000
2000
02:01
some picturespoze now from the fieldcamp.

câteva imagini acum de pe teren.

This is a pictureimagine of a centralcentral AfricanAfricane huntervânător.

02:05
It's actuallyde fapt a fairlydestul de commoncomun pictureimagine.
42
107000
2000
Este practic o imagine destul de comună.
02:07
One of the things I want you to noteNotă from it
43
109000
2000
02:09
is bloodsânge -- that you see a tremendousextraordinar amountCantitate of bloodsânge contacta lua legatura.
44
111000
3000
02:12
This was absolutelyabsolut keycheie for us. This is a
45
114000
2000
Asta era exact soluţia pentru noi. Aceasta este o
02:14
very intimateintim formformă of connectionconexiune.
46
116000
2000
foarte intimă formă de conexiune.
02:16
So if we're going to studystudiu viralvirale chatterpalavrageala, we need to
47
118000
2000
02:18
get to these populationspopulații who have intensiveintens contacta lua legatura with wildsălbatic animalsanimale.
48
120000
3000
02:21
And so we'vene-am been studyingstudiu people like this individualindividual.
49
123000
4000
02:25
We collectcolectarea bloodsânge from them, other specimensspecimene.
50
127000
3000
Colectăm sânge de la ei, alte mostre.
02:28
We look at the diseasesboli, whichcare are in the animalsanimale as well as the humansoameni.
51
130000
3000
02:31
And ideallyideal, this is going to allowpermite us to catchcaptură these things
52
133000
3000
02:34
earlydin timp on, as they're movingin miscare over into humanuman populationspopulații.
53
136000
3000
02:37
And the basicde bază objectiveobiectiv of this work is not to just
