ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jonathan Drori - Educator
Jonathan Drori commissioned the BBC's very first websites, one highlight in a long career devoted to online culture and educational media -- and understanding how we learn.

Why you should listen

Jonathan Drori has dedicated his career to media and learning. As the Head of Commissioning for BBC Online, he led the effort to create bbc.co.uk, the online face of the BBC (an effort he recalls fondly). He came to the web from the TV side of the BBC, where as an editor and producer he headed up dozens of television series on science, education and the arts.

After almost two decades at the BBC, he's now a director at Changing Media Ltd., a media and education consultancy, and is a visiting professor at University of Bristol, where he studies educational media and misperceptions in science. He continues to executive produce the occasional TV series, including 2004's award-winning "The DNA Story" and 2009's "Great Sperm Race." He is on the boards of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Woodland Trust.

00:59
And they are alsotaktiež underpod threathrozba because they are sharingzdieľať a planetplanéta
19

A sú ohrozené, pretože sa delia o planétu
01:01
with people like us.
20

s ľuďmi ako sme my.
01:03
And people like us want to do things that destroyzničiť plantsrastliny,
21
51000
3000
A ľudia ako my chcú robiť veci, ktoré ničia rastliny
01:06
and theirich habitatsstanovište.
22

01:08
And whetherči that's because of foodjedlo productionvýroba,
23

A či už je to kvôli produkcii potravín

01:19
all these things are meaningzmysel that plantsrastliny have to adaptprispôsobiť,
27
67000
4000
všetky tieto veci znamenajú, že rastliny sa musia prispôsobovať

or diezomrieť, or movesťahovať.
28
71000

alebo zomrieť, alebo sa presťahovať.
01:26
And plantsrastliny sometimesniekedy find it rathertrochu difficultnáročný to movesťahovať
29
74000
2000
A pre rastliny je občas problém presunúť sa inam,

because there mightsila be citiesmesta and other things in the way.
30
76000
3000

01:31
So if all humančlovek life dependszávisí on plantsrastliny,
31
79000
3000
Takže ak život ľudí závisí na rastlinách,
01:34
doesn't it make sensezmysel that perhapsmožno we should try to saveuložiť them?
32
82000

je celkom logické, že by sme sa ich mali pokúsiť zachrániť, nie?
01:36
I think it does.
33
84000

Myslím, že to dáva zmysel.
01:38
And I want to tell you about a projectprojekt to saveuložiť plantsrastliny.
34
86000
3000
A tak vám chcem porozprávať o projekte, ktorý zachraňuje rastliny.
01:41
And the way that you saveuložiť plantsrastliny
35
89000
2000
Spôsob, akým zachránite rastlinu,
01:43
is by storingskladovanie seedssemená.
36

je uloženie jej semienok.
01:45
Because seedssemená, in all theirich diverserozmanitý glorysláva,
37

Pretože semienka, v ich rôznorodej kráse,

sú budúcnosťou rastlín.

01:56
So here is the buildingbudova;
41
104000
2000
Tu je budova,
01:58
it looksvzhľad rathertrochu unassumingnenáročný, really.
42

And it's the largestnajväčší seedsemeno bankbreh in the worldsvet.

It existsexistuje not only in southernjužné EnglandAnglicko,

A nenachádza sa len v južnom Anglicku,

48
121000

02:16
So if you're going to buildvybudovať a seedsemeno bankbreh, you have to deciderozhodnúť
49
124000
2000
Ak idete budovať banku semienok, musíte sa rozhodnúť
02:18
what you're going to storesklad in it. Right?
50
126000
2000
čo v nej budete ukladať. Dobre?
02:20
And we decidedrozhodol that what we want to storesklad first of all,
51
128000
2000
A my sme sa rozhodli, že ako prvé uložíme
02:22
are the speciesdruh that are mostväčšina underpod threathrozba.
52
130000
3000
druhy, ktoré sú najviac ohrozené.
02:25
And those are the drysucho landpôda speciesdruh.
53

02:48
they're going to collectzbierať these seedssemená.
63

budú tie semienka zbierať.
02:51
They have thousandstisíce of people all over the worldsvet
64

They searchVyhľadávanie for them. They find them in flowerkvetina.

03:02

68

A zbierajú ich. Po celom svete.
03:05
The seedssemená -- some of if is very untechnicalneodborný.
69
173000
4000
Semienka nie sú veľmi technická vec.
03:09
You kinddruh of shovellopata them all in to bagssáčky and drysucho them off.
70
177000
3000
Nahádžete ich do vreciek a vysušíte ich.
03:12
You labelštítok them. You do some high-techHigh Tech things here and there,
71
180000
3000
Označíte ich. Občas využijete nejakú technológiu,
03:15
some low-techlow-tech things here and there.
72
183000
3000
ale väčšinou je to jednoduché.
03:18
And the mainHlavná thing is that you have to drysucho them
73
186000
2000
Ale základom je ich správne vysušiť,
03:20
very carefullyopatrne, at lownízky temperatureteplota.
74
188000
3000
opatrne, pri nízkej teplote.
03:23
And then you have to storesklad them
75
191000
2000
A potom ich uložíte
03:25
at about minusbez 20 degreesstupňa C --
76
193000
2000
do teploty -20 stupňov Celzia,
03:27
that's about minusbez fourštyri FahrenheitFahrenheit, I think --
77
195000
2000
to je asi mínus štyri stupne Fahrenheita,
03:29
with a very criticallyvážne lownízky moisturevlhkosť contentobsah.
78
197000
4000
s minimálnou vlhkosťou vzduchu.
03:33
And these seedssemená will be ableschopný to germinategerminate,
79
201000
3000
A tieto semienka sú schopné vyklíčiť,
03:36
we believe, with manyveľa of the speciesdruh,
80
204000
3000
pri niektorých druhoch
03:39
in thousandstisíce of yearsleta,
81
207000
2000
po tisíckach rokov,
03:41
and certainlyiste in hundredsstovky of yearsleta.
82
209000
3000
a určite po stovkách rokov.
03:44
It's no good storingskladovanie the seedssemená if you don't know they're still viableživotaschopný.
83
212000
3000
Je nanič skladovať semienka, ak neviete, či sú stále živé.
03:47
So everykaždý 10 yearsleta we do germinationklíčivosť testsskúšky
84
215000
3000
Preto každých desať rokov testujeme na malej vzorke,
03:50
on everykaždý samplevzorka of seedssemená that we have.
85
218000
3000
či vyklíčia.
03:53
And this is a distributeddistribuované networksieť.
86
221000
2000
A toto je tá distribuovaná sieť.
03:55
So all around the worldsvet people are doing the samerovnaký thing.
87
223000
3000
Po celom svete ľudia robia tú istú vec.
03:58
And that enablesumožňuje us to developvypracovať germinationklíčivosť protocolsprotokoly.
88
226000
3000
A to nám umožňuje vyvíjať protokoly na klíčenie.
04:01
That meansprostriedky that we know the right combinationkombinácia of heatteplo
89
229000
3000
To znamená, že poznáme správnu kombináciu tepla
04:04
and coldchladný and the cyclescykly that you have to get
90
232000
2000
a chladu a cyklov, ktoré vytvárajú podmienky
04:06
to make the seedsemeno germinategerminate.
91

pre klíčenie.
04:09
And that is very usefulužitočný informationinformácie.
92
237000
2000
A to sú užitočné informácie.
04:11
And then we growrásť, pestovať these things,
93
239000
2000
A potom tie rastliny pestujeme
04:13
and we tell people, back in the countrieskrajiny where these seedssemená have come from,
94
241000
4000
a môžeme ľuďom, ktorí sa ich tiež snažia pestovať, povedať,
04:17
"Look, actuallyvlastne we're not just storingskladovanie this
95
245000
2000
"Pozrite, my ich nielen uskladňujeme,
04:19

04:25
And that's already happeninghappening.
99

A to sa deje.
04:27
