ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Lang - Origamist
Robert Lang merges mathematics with aesthetics to fold elegant modern origami. His scientific approach helps him make folds once thought impossible -- and has secured his place as one of the first great Western masters of the art.

Why you should listen

Origami, as Robert Lang describes it, is simple: "You take a creature, you combine it with a square, and you get an origami figure." But Lang's own description belies the technicality of his art; indeed, his creations inspire awe by sheer force of their intricacy. His repertoire includes a snake with one thousand scales, a two-foot-tall allosaurus skeleton, and a perfect replica of a Black Forest cuckoo clock. Each work is the result of software (which Lang himself pioneered) that manipulates thousands of mathematical calculations in the production of a "folding map" of a single creature.

The marriage of mathematics and origami harkens back to Lang's own childhood.  As a first-grader, Lang proved far too clever for elementary mathematics and quickly became bored, prompting his teacher to give him a book on origami. His acuity for mathematics would lead him to become a physicist at the California Institute of Technology, and the owner of nearly fifty patents on lasers and optoelectronics. Now a professional origami master, Lang practices his craft as both artist and engineer, one day folding the smallest of insects and the next the largest of space-bound telescope lenses.

Pri origamiju smo to storili tako:

OrigamiOrigami revolvesse vrti around creaseglajenje patternsvzorce.

Pomembni so vzorci zgibanja.

If you look at the angleskoti around the foldkrat,

Če kote v zgibu
03:15
you find that if you numberštevilka the angleskoti in a circlekrog,

3000
da koti z sodimi števili tvorijo ravno črto
03:20
all the odd-numberedlihi angleskoti adddodaj up to a straightnaravnost lineline.
75

in isto je s koti z lihimi števili.
03:23
And if you look at how the layersplasti stacksklada,
76
185000

Če pogledamo zlaganje plasti,
03:25
you'llboš find that no matterzadevo how you stacksklada foldsgube and sheetslisti,
77

opazimo, da pri zlaganju zgibov in ploskev,
03:28
a sheetlist can never

03:32
So that's fourštiri simplepreprosto lawszakoni. That's all you need in origamiOrigami.
80
194000
3000
Pri origamiju rabite le te štiri zakonitosti.
03:35
All of origamiOrigami comesprihaja from that.
81
197000
2000
Vsak origami nastane iz njih.
03:37
And you'dTi bi think, "Can fourštiri simplepreprosto lawszakoni
82
199000

Vprašate se, ali res lahko le z njimi
03:39
give risevzpon to that kindvrste of complexitykompleksnost?"
83

ustvarimo takšno kompleksnost?
03:41

03:49
If we obeyubogati these lawszakoni,
88
211000
2000
Če upoštevamo te zakonitosti,
03:51
we can do amazingneverjetno things.
89
213000
2000
lahko ustvarimo neverjetne stvari.
03:53
So in origamiOrigami, to obeyubogati these lawszakoni,
90
215000
2000
Pri origamiju lahko tako
03:55
we can take simplepreprosto patternsvzorce --
91
217000
2000
uporabimo preproste vzorce --
03:57
like this repeatingponavljanje patternvzorec of foldsgube, calledpozval texturesteksture --

04:00
and by itselfsama it's nothing.
93
222000

ki so sami po sebi nepomembni.
04:02
But if we followsledite the lawszakoni of origamiOrigami,
94
224000
2000
Če pa sledimo zakonitostim,
04:04
we can put these patternsvzorce into anotherdrugo foldkrat
95
226000
3000
jih lahko vstavimo v nek drug zgib,
04:07
that itselfsama mightmorda be something very, very simplepreprosto,
96
229000
2000
ki je sam po sebi zelo preprost,
04:09
but when we put it togetherskupaj,
97
231000
2000
vendar skupaj
04:11
we get something a little differentdrugačen.
98
233000

postaneta nekaj malce drugačnega.

Če nočete zgibati 400 lusk,
04:22
you can back off and just do a fewmalo things,
102
244000
2000
lahko naredite le par stvari:

05:18
So let me stretchstretch out that equationenačba.
123
300000
2000
Naj razširim to enačbo.
05:20
I startZačni with my ideaideja. I abstractabstraktno it.
124
302000
3000
Začnem z zamislijo. Jo naredim abstraktno.
05:23
What's the mostnajbolj abstractabstraktno formobrazec? It's a stickpalico figureštevilka.
125
305000
3000
Najbolj abstraktna je figura iz črtic.
05:26
And from that stickpalico figureštevilka, I somehownekako have to get to a foldedzložen shapeobliko
126
308000
3000
Iz nje moram priti do zgibane oblike,
05:29
that has a partdel for everyvsak bitbit of the subjectpredmet,

you can turnobrat it into the finishedkončal shapeobliko.
131
322000
2000
spremenimo v končno obliko.
05:42
Now the first stepkorak, prettylepa easyenostavno.
132
324000
2000
Prvi korak je enostaven.
05:44
Take an ideaideja, drawpripravi a stickpalico figureštevilka.
133
326000
2000
Zamisel in figura iz črtic.
05:46
The last stepkorak is not so hardtežko, but that middlesredi stepkorak --
134
328000
3000
Tudi zadnji ni težak, ampak srednji --
05:49
going from the abstractabstraktno descriptionopis to the foldedzložen shapeobliko --
135
331000
3000
prehod iz abstraktne v zgibano obliko --
05:52
that's hardtežko.
136
334000
2000
ta je težak.
05:54
But that's the placemesto where the mathematicalmatematično ideasideje
137
336000
2000
A tukaj nam lahko matematične zamisli
05:56
can get us over the humpgrba.
138
338000
2000
pomagajo premagati oviro.
05:58
And I'm going to showshow you all how to do that
139
340000
2000
Pokazal vam bo, kako to deluje,
06:00
so you can go out of here and foldkrat something.
140
342000
2000
da boste lahko šli nekaj zgibat.
06:02
But we're going to startZačni smallmajhna.
141
344000
2000
Začeli bomo počasi.
06:04
This basebazo has a lot of flapszavihki in it.
142
346000
2000
Ta osnova ima veliko zavihov.
06:06
We're going to learnučiti se how to make one flappoklopec.
143
348000
3000
Naučili se bomo narediti enega.
06:09
How would you make a singlesamski flappoklopec?
144
351000
2000
Kako bi to storili?
06:11
Take a squarekvadrat. FoldKrat it in halfpol, foldkrat it in halfpol, foldkrat it again,
145
353000
3000
Vzameš kvadrat, ga trikrat prepogneš,
06:14
untildo it getsdobi long and narrowozek,
146
356000
2000
da postane dolg in ozek
06:16
and then we'llbomo say at the endkonec of that, that's a flappoklopec.
147
358000
2000
in tisto na koncu je zavih.
06:18
I could use that for a legnoge, an armroka, anything like that.
148
360000
3000
Postane lahko noga, roka itd.
06:21
What paperpapir wentšla into that flappoklopec?
149
363000
2000
Koliko papirja smo porabili za zavih?
06:23
Well, if I unfoldrazgrniti it and go back to the creaseglajenje patternvzorec,
150
365000
2000
Če papir razgrnemo,
06:25
you can see that the upperzgornji left cornerkotiček of that shapeobliko
151
367000
3000
vidimo, da je zgornji levi kot
06:28
is the paperpapir that wentšla into the flappoklopec.
152
370000
2000
uporabljen za zavih.
06:30
So that's the flappoklopec, and all the restpočitek of the paper'spapirja left over.
153
372000
3000
Preostali papir lahko uporabimo
06:33
I can use it for something elsedrugače.
154
375000
2000
za kaj drugega.
06:35
Well, there are other waysnačinov of makingizdelavo a flappoklopec.
155
377000
2000
Zavih lahko naredimo še drugače.
06:37
There are other dimensionsdimenzije for flapszavihki.
156
379000
2000
Lahko je drugačnih dimenzij.
06:39
If I make the flapszavihki skinniersuh, I can use a bitbit lessmanj paperpapir.
157
381000
3000
Če naredim ožjega, porabim manj papirja.
06:42
If I make the flappoklopec as skinnysuh as possiblemogoče,
158
384000
3000
Če ga naredim najbolj ozkega,
06:45
I get to the limitomejitev of the minimumnajmanj amountznesek of paperpapir neededpotrebno.
159
387000
3000
pridem do najmanjše porabe papirja
06:48
And you can see there, it needspotrebe a quarter-circlečetrt kroga of paperpapir to make a flappoklopec.
160
390000
3000
in sicer četrtina kroga.
06:52
There's other waysnačinov of makingizdelavo flapszavihki.
161
394000
2000
Lahko jih naredim še drugače.
06:54
If I put the flappoklopec on the edgerob, it usesuporabe a halfpol circlekrog of paperpapir.
162
396000
3000
Če dam zavih na rob, porabim polkrog.
06:57
And if I make the flappoklopec from the middlesredi, it usesuporabe a fullpolno circlekrog.
163
399000
3000
Če ga dam na sredino, pa cel krog.
07:00
So, no matterzadevo how I make a flappoklopec,
164
402000
2000
Ni važno, kako zavih naredim,
07:02
it needspotrebe some partdel
165
404000
2000
vedno se porabi
07:04
of a circularkrožno regionregija of paperpapir.
166
406000
2000
neki del kroga na papirju.
07:06
So now we're readypripravljen to scaleobsega up.
167
408000
2000
Čas je za nadgradnjo.
07:08
What if I want to make something that has a lot of flapszavihki?
168
410000
3000
Ustvariti hočem nekaj z več zavihi.
07:11
What do I need? I need a lot of circleskroge.
169
413000
3000
Kaj rabim? Veliko krogov.
07:15
And in the 1990s,
170
417000
2000
V 90-ih letih
07:17
origamiOrigami artistsumetniki discoveredodkriti these principlesnačela
171
419000
2000
so odkrili te principe
07:19
and realizedrealiziran we could make arbitrarilysamovoljno complicatedzapleteno figuresštevilke
172
421000
3000
in spoznali, da lahko dobimo poljubno
07:22
just by packingpakiranje circleskroge.
173
424000
3000
zapletene oblike z zlaganjem krogov.
07:25
And here'sTukaj je where the deadmrtev people startZačni to help us out,
174
427000
3000
Tu nam mrtveci začnejo pomagati.
07:28
because lots of people have studiedštudiral
175
430000
3000
Veliko ljudi je raziskovalo
07:31
the problemproblem of packingpakiranje circleskroge.
176
433000
2000
probleme z zlaganjem krogov.
07:33
I can relyzanašajte se on that vastogromno historyzgodovina of mathematiciansmatematiki and artistsumetniki
177
435000
3000
Oprem se lahko na matematike in umetnike,

178
438000

ki so se ukvarjali s tem.
07:39
And I can use those patternsvzorce now to createustvarite origamiOrigami shapesoblike.
179
441000
3000
Njihovi vzorci mi pomagajo pri origamiju.
07:43
So we figuredfigured out these rulespravila wherebys katerim you packpakiranje circleskroge,
180
445000
2000
Po teh pravilih zlagaš kroge,
07:45
you decorateOkrasite the patternsvzorce of circleskroge with lineslinije
181
447000
3000
jih opremiš s črtami.
07:48
accordingglede na to more rulespravila. That givesdaje you the foldsgube.
182
450000
2000
Dobiš zgibe,
07:50
Those foldsgube foldkrat into a basebazo. You shapeobliko the basebazo.
183
452000
3000
iz katerih ustvariš osnovo. Jo oblikuješ.
07:53
You get a foldedzložen shapeobliko -- in this caseprimera, a cockroachščurki.
184
455000
3000
Dobiš zgibano obliko -- tukaj ščurka.
07:57
And it's so simplepreprosto.
185
459000
2000
Tako preprosto je.
07:59
(LaughterSmeh)
186
461000
3000
(Smeh)
08:02
It's so simplepreprosto that a computerračunalnik could do it.
187
464000
3000
Tako preprosto, da lahko to stori računalnik.
08:05
And you say, "Well, you know, how simplepreprosto is that?"
188
467000
2000
Vprašate: "Je to res preprosto?"
08:07
But computersračunalniki -- you need to be ablesposoben to describeopišite things
189
469000
2000
Pri računalnikih je treba stvari opisati
08:09
in very basicosnovno termspogoji, and with this, we could.
190
471000
3000
preprosto in tukaj smo jih lahko.
08:12
So I wrotenapisal a computerračunalnik programprogram a bunchkup of yearslet agonazaj
191
474000
2000
Napisal sem program, "TreeMaker",

08:19
(LaughterSmeh)
194
481000
2000
(Smeh)
08:21
And you just drawpripravi a stickpalico figureštevilka,
195
483000
2000
Narišete figuro iz črtic
08:23
and it calculatesizračuna the creaseglajenje patternvzorec.
196
485000
2000
in dobite shemo zgibov.
08:25
It does the circlekrog packingpakiranje, calculatesizračuna the creaseglajenje patternvzorec,
197
487000
3000
Zloži kroge in ustvari shemo zgibov
08:28
and if you use that stickpalico figureštevilka that I just showedpokazala --
198
490000
2000
in če uporabite to obliko,
08:30
whichki you can kindvrste of tell, it's a deerjelen, it's got antlersrogovja --
199
492000
3000
lahko vidite, da je jelen,
08:33
you'llboš get this creaseglajenje patternvzorec.
200
495000
2000
dobite tole shemo zgibov.
08:35
And if you take this creaseglajenje patternvzorec, you foldkrat on the dottedpikčasto lineslinije,
201
497000
2000
Če zgibate po črticah,
08:37
you'llboš get a basebazo that you can then shapeobliko
202
499000
3000
dobite osnovo, iz katere oblikujete
08:40

203
502000
2000
jelena
08:42
with exactlytočno the creaseglajenje patternvzorec that you wanted.
204
504000
2000
s hoteno shemo zgibov.
08:44
And if you want a differentdrugačen deerjelen,
205
506000
2000
Če hočete drugačnega,
08:46
not a white-tailedbelorepca deerjelen, but you want a mulemule deerjelen, or an elkElk,
206
508000
3000
ne belorepega jelena,
08:49
you changesprememba the packingpakiranje,
207
511000
2000
spremenite zlaganje
08:51
and you can do an elkElk.
208
513000
2000
in lahko ustvarite vapitija.
08:53
Or you could do a mooselosa.
209
515000
2000
Ali losa.
08:55
Or, really, any other kindvrste of deerjelen.
210
517000
2000
Ali kateregakoli jelena.
08:57
These techniquestehnike revolutionizedrevolucionarno this artumetnost.
211
519000
3000
Te tehnike so zrevolucionirale to umetnost.
09:00
We foundnajdemo we could do insectsžuželke,

09:24
And you can do more than just insectsžuželke.
222
546000
2000
Ustvarimo lahko ne le žuželke.
09:26
This -- you can put detailspodrobnosti,
223
548000
2000
Dodamo lahko podrobnosti:
09:28
toesprsti and clawskremplji. A grizzlygrizli bearmedveda has clawskremplji.

prste in kremplje. Grizli ima kremplje.
09:31
This treedrevo frogžaba has toesprsti.
225

Ta žaba ima prste.
09:33
ActuallyDejansko, lots of people in origamiOrigami now put toesprsti into theirnjihovi modelsmodeli.

235
576000
2000
naredite bolj zapleteno glasbilo.
09:56
Well, then you could do an organorgan.
236
578000
2000
Ustvarimo lahko orgle.

There were two groupsskupine of people who were interestedzainteresirani in this:

Za to so se zanimali dve skupini:
12:26
planetaryplanetarni scientistsznanstveniki, who want to look up,

planetarni znanstveniki, ki bi gledali gor

12:33
WhetherAli you look up or look down,
287
735000
2000
Ne glede, kam gledamo,
12:35
how do you get it up in spaceprostor? You've got to get it up there in a rocketraketa.
288
737000
3000
kako ga spravimo v vesolje? Z raketo.
12:38
And rocketsrakete are smallmajhna. So you have to make it smallermanjši.
289
740000
3000
A te so majhne, zato ga moramo pomanjšati.
12:41
How do you make a largevelik sheetlist of glasssteklo smallermanjši?

Well, about the only way is to foldkrat it up somehownekako.
291
745000

Nekako jo je treba zložiti.
12:46
So you have to do something like this.
292
748000
2000
Potrebno je nekaj takega --
12:48
This was a smallmajhna modelmodel.
293

12:53
But this pattern'svzorec je not going to work
295
755000
3000
A to ne bo delovalo, če hočemo
12:56
to get something 100 metersmetrov down to a fewmalo metersmetrov.
296
758000
3000
100-metrsko lečo zložiti na par metrov.
