ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Lisa Bu - Passionate reader
Lisa Bu has built a career helping people find great stories to listen to. Now she tells her own story.

Why you should listen

At TED's annual staff retreat, everyone has to get up and talk about something -- either about work, or about something interesting from their own lives. In fall 2012, our own Lisa Bu prepared a talk about her love of reading. And our quiet, funny and efficient Content Distribution Manager simply brought down the house, with a story that's too good not to share. We are thrilled and proud that Lisa is the first TED staffer ever to be invited to speak on the mainstage at the TED Conference.

Born and raised in Hunan, China, Lisa Bu has been with TED since 2011. Before that, she spent seven years as a talk show producer and a digital media content director at Wisconsin Public Radio. She's also a computer programmer, with a PhD in journalism and an MBA in information systems from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a BA in Chinese from Nanjing University in China.

"Complete Works of Sanmao" (aka Echo Chan)] ["Lessons From History" by Nan Huaijin]
(buugaag magac'yadooda)
02:10
I came to the U.S. in 1995,
39
118866
3191
waxaan imaadey America. 1995kii,
02:14
so which books did I read here first?
40
122057
2881
marka buugagate akhris ku bilaabaa marka hore?
02:16
Books banned in China, of course.
41
124938
3525
buugaagta china laga maamnuucay, dabcan.
02:20
"The Good Earth" is about Chinese peasant life.
42
128463
3670
buuga "the good earth" oo ku saabsan nolosha beeraleyda china.
02:24
That's just not convenient for propaganda. Got it.
43
132133
4102
Taasi waa uun maku haboona dacaayad. ma fahantey.
02:28
The Bible is interesting, but strange.
44
136235
3725
Kitaabka Qudduuska waa mid xiisa leh, laakiin wa cajiib.
02:31
(Laughter)
45
139960
2485
(Qosol)
02:34
That's a topic for a different day.
46
142445
3471
Taasi waa mawduuc maalin oo kala duwan.
02:37
But the fifth commandment gave me an epiphany:
47
145916
3295
Laakiin amarkii shanaad waxa uu i siiyey garsho:
02:41
"You shall honor your father and mother."
48
149211
2979
"waa in aad hooyadaa iyo aabahaa aad ixtiraamtaa."
02:44
"Honor," I said. "That's so different,
49
152190
2950
"ixtiraam," aan dhahay. "taasi aad ayey u kala duwan tahy,
02:47
and better, than obey."
50
155140
1739
iyo kasii fiican,in aad adeecdid."
02:48
So it becomes my tool to climb out
51
156879
2504
marka waxey noqoneysaa wadadii aan uga bixi lahaa
02:51
of this Confucian guilt trap
52
159383
2116
dabintaan hadgudubka ah oo jahwareerka leh
02:53
and to restart my relationship with my parents.
53
161499
4272
iyo in aan dib u bilaabo xariirkeyga aan la leeyahay waalidiinteyda.
02:57
Encountering a new culture also started my habit
54
165771
3022
la kulmidda dhaqan cusub ayan sidoo kele waxaan bilaabey caadadeyda
03:00
of comparative reading.
55
168793
1772
is barbadhiga akhriska.
03:02
It offers many insights.
56
170565
1855
Waxay bixisaa aragtiyo badan.
03:04
For example, I found this map out of place at first
57
172420
4780
tusaale ahaan, waxaan markii hore aan meel ka heley khariidhadaan
03:09
because this is what Chinese students grew up with.
58
177200
4885
waayo tani waa waxa ay ardeyda chineeseka kusoo koraan.
03:14
It had never occurred to me,
59
182085
1501
waligeed iguma soo dhicin,
03:15
China doesn't have to be at the center of the world.
60
183586
3135
china ma ahan in ay noqoto xarunta aduunka.
03:18
A map actually carries somebody's view.
61
186721
4253
dhab ahaantii khariidada waxey xambarsan tahay arigtida qof.
03:22
Comparative reading actually is nothing new.
62
190974
2408
isbarbardhiga akhriska ah ma ahan wax cusub.
03:25
It's a standard practice in the academic world.
63
193382
3304
Waa dhaqanka caadiga ah ee tacliinta dunida.
03:28
There are even research fields
64
196686
1468
Waxaa jira xitaa goobo cilmi-baarista
03:30
such as comparative religion and comparative literature.
65
198154
3945
sida isbarbardhiga diimaha iyo isbarbardhiga suugaanta
03:34
Compare and contrast gives scholars
66
202099
2235
isbarbardhiga waxey culimada siisaa
03:36
a more complete understanding of a topic.
67
204334
3006
faham dheeraad ah oo dhamaystiran oo ku saabsan mawduuc.
03:39
So I thought, well, if comparative reading
68
207340
1753
marka waan fakirey,fiican,hadii isbarbardhiga akhriska
03:41
works for research, why not do it in daily life too?
69
209093
3836
u shaqeeya cilmi-baarista, maxey ugu shaqeeyn la'adahay nolol maalmeedka caadiga ah?
03:44
So I started reading books in pairs.
70
212929
3375
markaan waxaan bilaabey in aan buugaagta u akhriyo labo_labo.
03:48
So they can be about people --
71
216304
1214
waxey ku saansan karaan dad----
03:49
["Benjamin Franklin" by Walter Isaacson]["John Adams" by David McCullough] --
72
217518
883
["Benjamin Franklin" oo qoreyWalter Isaacson]["John Adams" oo qorey David McCullough] --
(magac buugaag)
03:50
who are involved in the same event,
73
218401
2508
oo ku lug leh dhacdooyin usku mid ah,
03:52
or friends with shared experiences.
74
220909
2679
ama asxaab aragti wadaaga,
03:55
["Personal History" by Katharine Graham]["The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life," by Alice Schroeder]
75
223588
1400
["Personal History" oo qorey Katharine Graham]["The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life," oo qorey Alice Schroeder]
03:56
I also compare the same stories in different genres -- (Laughter)
76
224988
4398
waxaan kaloo isbarbar dhig ku sameeyey isla sheekooyinka oo kala duwan
(qosol)
04:01
[Holy Bible: King James Version]["Lamb" by Chrisopher Moore] --
77
229386
2112
[Holy Bible: King James Version]["Lamb" oo qorey Chrisopher Moore] --
04:03
or similar stories from different cultures,
78
231498
3137
ama sheekooyin isla mid ah oo kasoo kala jeeda dhaqamo kala duwan,
04:06
as Joseph Campbell did in his wonderful book.["The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell]
79
234635
2881
sida Joseph Campbell ku yeley bugiisa cajiibka ah["The Power of Myth" oo qorey Joseph Campbell]
04:09
For example, both the Christ and the Buddha
80
237516
3393
Tusaale ahaan, Masiix iyo Buddha labadooda
04:12
went through three temptations.
81
240909
2433
waxey mareen sadax halbeeg.
04:15
For the Christ, the temptations
82
243342
1802
masxiixa, halbeegyada
04:17
are economic, political and spiritual.
83
245144
3975
wa dhaqaalaha,siyaasada iyo ruuxiga.
04:21
For the Buddha, they are all psychological:
84
249119
4326
buddha, kulligood wa wada cilmi nafsi:
04:25
lust, fear and social duty -- interesting.
85
253445
7318
damac, cabsi iyo waajibaadka bulshada - xiiso leh.
04:32
So if you know a foreign language, it's also fun
86
260763
3039
marka hadii aad taqaano luuqad ajnabi ah, waxa kaloo xiiso leh
04:35
to read your favorite books in two languages.
87
263802
1897
in aad buugaagta aad jeceshahay labo luuqadood.
04:37
["The Way of Chuang Tzu" Thomas Merton]["Tao: The Watercourse Way" Alan Watts]
88
265699
1252
["The Way of Chuang Tzu" Thomas Merton]["Tao: The Watercourse Way" Alan Watts]
(buugaag)
04:38
Instead of lost in translation, I found there is much to gain.
89
266951
3560
intaan tarjumaad ku lumi lahaa, waxaan ogaadey in ay jiraan wax badan oo faa'ido ah
04:42
For example, it's through translation that I realized
90
270527
4208
tusaale ahaan, waxaan tarjumaada ka ogaadey in--
04:46
"happiness" in Chinese literally means "fast joy." Huh!
91
274735
5973
"farxada" chineese'ku u yaqaaniin "farxad dhaqsi ah,"huh!
04:52
"Bride" in Chinese literally means "new mother." Uh-oh.
92
280708
5289
"aroosad" ee Chinese macno ahaan waxaa loola jeedaa "hooyada cusub."uh-oh.
04:57
(Laughter)
93
285997
3261
(qosol)
05:01
Books have given me a magic portal to connect with people
94
289258
5387
buugaagtu waxey i siiyeen wado sixran si aan ugula xariiro dadka
05:06
of the past and the present.
95
294645
2645
ee la soo dhaafey ama kuwa la joogaba.
05:09
I know I shall never feel lonely or powerless again.
96
297290
4235
Waan ogahay in aan marnaba mar dareemi doonaan cidlo ama awood darro.
05:13
Having a dream shattered really is nothing
97
301525
2677
in aad qabto riyo burburtey dhab ahaantii wa wax aan jirin
05:16
compared to what many others have suffered.
98
304202
2936
marka la barbar dhigo waxa dadka kele ka cowdaan.
05:19
I have come to believe that coming true
99
307138
2728
waan in aan rumeystaa in xaqiijinta
05:21
is not the only purpose of a dream.
100
309866
3280
in aysan aheen u jeedada keliya ee riyada
05:25
Its most important purpose is to get us in touch
101
313146
3901
ujeeadada ugu weyn waa in aan anagu isku xariirinaa
05:29
with where dreams come from,
102
317047
2115
meesha riyada ay ka tiaado,
05:31

103
319162

05:34
Even a shattered dream can do that for you.
104
322066
4222
xitaa riyo daal leh waad sameyn kartaa marka loo fiiriyo adiga.
05:38
So because of books, I'm here today,
105
326288
2254
marka buugaagtaas daraadood, oo aan maanta halkaan u joogo,
05:40
happy, living again with a purpose and a clarity,
