ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marcin Jakubowski - Farmer and technologist
Marcin Jakubowski is open-sourcing a set of blueprints for 50 farming tools that can be built cheaply from scratch. Call it a "civilization starter kit."

Why you should listen

Declaring that, "We can lead self-sustaining lives without sacrificing our standard of living," Marcin Jakubowski believes that only by opening the means of production can we achieve abundance for all. Though he has a Ph.D. in fusion physics, he became dissatisfied with its remoteness, and turned back to the earth as a farmer and social innovator.

He is the founder of Open Source Ecology, which is creating the Global Village Construction Set — the blueprints for simple fabrication of everything needed to start a self-sustaining village. At Factor e Farm in rural Missouri, he's been successfully putting those ideas to the test.

00:18
farmer, technologist.

3000
2000
fermer, teknolog.
00:20
I was born in Poland, now in the U.S.
2
5000
3000
Kam lindur në Poloni, tani në SHBA
00:23
I started a group called Open Source Ecology.
3
8000
3000
00:26
We've identified the 50 most important machines
4
11000
2000
Kemi identifikuar 50 makinat më të rëndësishme
00:28
that we think it takes for modern life to exist --
5
13000
3000
00:31
things from tractors,
6
16000
2000
nga traktorët,
00:33
bread ovens, circuit makers.
7
18000
2000
furrat e bukës, krijuesit e qarqeve elektrike
00:35
Then we set out to create
8
20000
2000
Pastaj vendosëm të krijojmë
00:37
an open source, DIY, do it yourself version
9
22000
3000
burimin e hapur, të versionit "të bësh vetë atë ",
00:40
that anyone can build and maintain
10
25000
2000
që çdokush mund ta ndërtojë dhe mirëmbajë
00:42
at a fraction of the cost.
11
27000
2000
me një pjesë të kostos.
00:44
We call this the Global Village Construction Set.
12
29000
2000
Ne e quajmë këtë Kompletin e Ndërtimit të Fshatit Global
00:46
So let me tell you a story.
13
31000
2000
Më lejoni t'ju tregoj një histori.
00:48
So I finished my 20s
14
33000
2000
Në fund të 20-tave
00:50
with a Ph.D. in fusion energy,
15
35000
2000
00:52
and I discovered I was useless.
16
37000
3000
dhe zbulova se isha i padobishëm.
00:55
I had no practical skills.
17
40000
2000
Unë nuk kisha aftësi praktike.
00:57
The world presented me with options,
18
42000
2000
Bota më paraqiti me mundësi,
00:59
and I took them.
19
44000
2000
dhe i përdora ato.
01:01
I guess you can call it the consumer lifestyle.
20
46000
2000
Ju mund ta quani atë konsumatorizëm
01:03
So I started a farm in Missouri
21
48000
3000
Kështu që fillova një fermë në Missouri
01:06
and learned about the economics of farming.
22
51000
3000
dhe mësova rreth ekonomisë bujqësore.
01:09
I bought a tractor -- then it broke.
23
54000
3000
Bleva një traktor - më pas u prish.
01:12
I paid to get it repaired --
24
57000
2000
Pagova për ta riparuar atë -
01:14
then it broke again.
25
59000
2000
por ai u prish përsëri.
01:16
Then pretty soon,
26
61000
2000
Pastaj shumë shpejt
01:18
I was broke too.
27
63000
2000
Unë hoqa dorë.
01:20
I realized
28
65000
2000
Kuptova
01:22
that the truly appropriate, low-cost tools that I needed
29
67000
3000
01:25
to start a sustainable farm and settlement
30
70000
3000
01:28
just didn't exist yet.
31
73000
2000
thjesht nuk ekzistonin.
01:30
I needed tools that were robust, modular,
32
75000
3000
Më duheshin mjete të fuqishme, modulare,
01:33
highly efficient and optimized,
33
78000
2000
shumë efikase dhe të optimizuara,
01:35
low-cost,
34
80000
2000
me kosto të ulët,
01:37
made from local and recycled materials that would last a lifetime,
35
82000
3000
01:40
not designed for obsolescence.
36
85000
2000
jo të projektuara që të vjetrohen.
01:42
I found that I would have to build them myself.
37
87000
3000
01:45
So I did just that.
38
90000
3000
Kështu e bëra.
01:48
And I tested them.
39
93000
3000
Dhe i testova.
01:51
And I found that industrial productivity
40
96000
3000
01:54
can be achieved on a small scale.
41
99000
3000
në shkallë të vogël.
01:57
So then I published the 3D designs,
42
102000
3000
Kështuqë botova vizatimet 3D,
02:00
schematics,
43
105000
2000
skematike,
02:02
instructional videos and budgets
44
107000
3000
videot e udhëzimeve dhe buxhetet
02:05
on a wiki.
45
110000
2000
në një wiki.
02:07
Then contributors from all over the world
46
112000
2000
02:09
began showing up, prototyping new machines
47
114000
3000
me prototipe makinash të reja
02:12
during dedicated project visits.
48
117000
2000
kur vinin të vizitonin projektin.
02:14
So far, we have prototyped eight of the 50 machines.
49
119000
3000
Deri tani, ne kemi bërë prototipet e tetë nga 50 makinave.
02:17
And now the project
50
122000
2000
Projekti tashmë
02:19
is beginning to grow on its own.
51
124000
3000
ka filluar të rritet vetvetiu.
02:22
We know that open source has succeeded
52
127000
2000
02:24
with tools for managing knowledge and creativity.
53
129000
3000
02:27
And the same is starting to happen with hardware too.
54
132000
3000
02:30
We're focusing on hardware
55
135000
2000
Ne po përqëndrohemi në pasijset e rënda
02:32
because it is hardware that can change people's lives
56
137000
3000
sepse ato mund të ndryshojnë jetën e njerëzve
02:35
in such tangible material ways.
57
140000
3000
ngaqë i prekin materialisht.
02:38
If we can lower the barriers to farming, building, manufacturing,
58
143000
3000
Duke ulur pengesat për bujqësi, ndërtim, prodhim,
02:41
then we can unleash just massive amounts of human potential.
59
146000
3000
shtohet shumë kapaciteti i potencialit njerëzor.
02:44
That's not only in the developing world.
60
149000
3000
02:47
Our tools are being made
61
152000
2000
Mjetet tona po bëhen
02:49
for the American farmer, builder, entrepreneur, maker.
62
154000
3000
për fermerin, ndërtuesin, sipërmarrësin, krijuesin amerikan.
02:52
We've seen lots of excitement from these people,
63
157000
2000
Ne kemi parë shumë zell nga këta njerëz,
02:54
who can now start a construction business,
64
159000
2000
