ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sheikha Al Mayassa - Founder, Doha Film Institute
Sheikha Al Mayassa is the young and progressive force behind Qatar's mission to become the Middle East's foremost destination for the arts and culture.

Why you should listen

As chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani uses the rich history of her country to drive education and cross-cultural interaction today. The QMA’s flagship project is the Museum of Islamic Art, an institution built to serve as the world’s center for education and information on art in the Muslim world. According to H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa’s vision, the museum will not only preserve and document the vast diversity of Islamic art, but also provide a welcoming place for the international community to learn more about an often-oversimplified culture.

Sheikha Al Mayassa has committed to fostering diversity and creating opportunity for all. She is also the chairperson for Reach Out to Asia (ROTA), an organization that is trying to provide access to education for underserved populations throughout Asia, regardless of gender or age. She’s continuing her own education by pursuing a graduate degree at Columbia University in New York.

Qatar is no exception to the region.

Katari nuk është pjesë e regjionit.
00:28
It's a very young nation led by young people.
6

3000
00:31
We have been reminiscing about the latest technologies
7

00:36
and for me the abaya,
9
21000
2000
dhe për mua abaya,
00:38
my traditional dress that I'm wearing today.
10
23000
2000
00:40
Now this is not a religious garment,
11
25000
2000
Tani kjo nuk është ndonje veshje religjioze,
00:42
nor is it a religious statement.
12
27000
2000
as një thënje religjioze poashtu.
00:44
Instead, it's a diverse cultural statement
13
29000
3000
00:47
that we choose to wear.
14
32000
2000
që ne e zgjedhim për ta veshur.
00:49
Now I remember a few years ago,
15
34000
2000
Tani unë e kujtoj disa vite më parë,
00:51
a journalist asked Dr. Sheikha, who's sitting here,
16
36000
3000
00:54
president of Qatar University --
17
39000
2000
presidenti i universitetit të Katarit-
00:56
who, by the way, is a woman --
18
41000
2000
00:58
he asked her whether she thought
19
43000
2000
01:00
the abaya hindered or infringed her freedom in any way.
20
45000
3000
01:03
Her answer was quite the contrary.
21
48000
2000
Përgjigjëja e saj ishte krejt ndryshe.
01:05
Instead, she felt more free,
22
50000
2000
Në vend se, ajo u ndije shumë më e lirë,
01:07
more free because she could wear whatever she wanted
23
52000
2000
01:09
under the abaya.
24
54000
2000
përfundit abaya.
01:11
She could come to work in her pajamas and nobody would care.
25
56000
3000
Ajo do të vinte në punë me pigjama dhe askush nuk do t'ja dinte.
01:14
(Laughter)
26
59000
2000
(Qeshen)
01:16
Not that you do; I'm just saying.
27
61000
2000
Jo se as ju që e dini; unë vetem po them.
01:18
(Laughter)
28
63000
2000
(Qeshen)
01:20
My point is here, people have a choice --
29
65000
2000
Logjika ime këtu, njerëzit kanë një zgjidhje --
01:22
just like the Indian lady could wear her sari
30
67000
2000
01:24
or the Japanese woman could wear her kimono.
31
69000
3000
01:27
We are changing our culture from within,
32
72000
2000
01:29
but at the same time
33
74000
2000
mirpo në të njejten kohë
01:31
we are reconnecting with our traditions.
34
76000
2000
ne po e lidhim atë me tradicionalen tonë.
01:33
We know that modernization is happening.
35
78000
2000
Ne e dim që modernizimi po ndodhë.
01:35
And yes, Qatar wants to be a modern nation.
36
80000
2000
01:37
But at the same time
37
82000
2000
Mipro në të njejten kohë
01:39
we are reconnecting and reasserting our Arab heritage.
38
84000
3000
01:42
It's important for us to grow organically.
39
87000
3000
01:45
And we continuously make the conscious decision
40
90000
2000
Dhe ne vazhdimisht po marrim vendime konkluzive
01:47
to reach that balance.
41
92000
2000
për ta arritur atë balancë.
01:49
In fact, research has shown
42
94000
3000
Në fakt, kërkimet kan treguar
01:52
that the more the world is flat,
43
97000
2000
01:54
if I use Tom Friedman's analogy,
44
99000
2000
nese e përdori analogjin e Tom Friedman-it
01:56
or global,
45
101000
2000
globali ynë,
01:58
the more and more people are wanting to be different.
46
103000
2000
02:00
And for us young people,
47
105000
2000
Dhe për ne njerëzit e ri,
02:02
they're looking to become individuals
48
107000
2000
ata po kërkojnë të jenë individualë
02:04
and find their differences amongst themselves.
49
109000
2000
dhe të gjejnë ndryshimin në mes veti.
02:06
Which is why I prefer the Richard Wilk analogy
50
111000
3000
Pra kjo është ajo sepse unë e preferoj analogjin r Richard Wilk-it
02:09
of globalizing the local
51
114000
2000
për globalizimin e vendit
02:11
and localizing the global.
52
116000
2000
dhe lokalizimin e globit.
02:13
We don't want to be all the same,
53
118000
2000
02:15
but we want to respect each other and understand each other.
54
120000
3000
mirpo ne duam ta rrespektojmë njëri tjetrin dhe ta kuptojmë secilin.
02:18
And therefore tradition becomes more important,
55
123000
2000
Dhe kështu tradita bëhet më e rëndësishme,
02:20
not less important.
56
125000
2000
jo më pak e rëndësishme.
02:22
Life necessitates a universal world,
57
127000
3000
02:25
however, we believe in the security
58
130000
2000
sidoqoftë, ne besojmë në sigurin
02:27
of having a local identity.
59
132000
2000
e të pasuri një identitet lokalë.
02:29
And this is what the leaders of this region
60
134000
2000
02:31
are trying to do.
61
136000
2000
janë duke berë.
02:33
We're trying to be part of this global village,
62
138000
2000
02:35
but at the same time we're revising ourselves
63
140000
3000
02:38
through our cultural institutions and cultural development.
64
143000
4000
nepërmjet kultures institucionale dhe zhvillimit kulturalë.
02:42
I'm a representation of that phenomenon.
65
147000
3000
Unë po e riprezentoj këtë fenomen.
02:45
And I think a lot of people in this room,
66
150000
2000
02:47
I can see a lot of you are in the same position as myself.
67
152000
2000
02:49
And I'm sure, although we can't see the people in Washington,
68
154000
3000
02:52
they are in the same position.
69
157000
2000
ata jan në po të njejten pozitë.
02:54
We're continuously trying to straddle
70
159000
2000
Ne vazhdimit po përpiqemi të formulojmë
02:56
different worlds, different cultures
71
161000
2000
botra të ndryshme, kulura të ndryshme
02:58
and trying to meet the challenges
72
163000
2000
dhe po provojmë të arrijmë sfida
03:00
of a different expectation
73
165000
2000
të përmasave të ndryshme
03:02
from ourselves and from others.
74
167000
2000
nga vetvetja jonë dhe nga të tjerët.
03:04
So I want to ask a question:
75
169000
2000
Pra dëshiroj të bejë një pytje:
03:06
What should culture in the 21st century look like?
76
171000
3000
03:09
In a time where the world is becoming personalized,
77
174000
3000
03:12
when the mobile phone, the burger, the telephone,
78
177000
3000
ku telefonat mobilë, burgeret, telefonat
03:15
everything has its own personal identity,
79
180000
2000
gjdogjë ka përsonalitetin e tij,
03:17
how should we perceive ourselves
80
182000
2000
si do duhet të vazhdojmë me veten tonë
03:19
and how should we perceive others?
81
184000
2000
03:21
How does that impact our desert culture?
82
186000
3000
03:24
I'm not sure of how many of you in Washington
83
189000
3000
Jam i sigurit se sa prej jush në Washington
03:27
are aware of the cultural developments happening in the region
84
192000
3000
03:30
and, the more recent, Museum of Islamic Art
85
195000
2000
03:32
opened in Qatar in 2008.
86
197000
3000
i hapur në Katar në vitin 2008.
03:35
I myself am personalizing these cultural developments,
87
200000
3000
Unë përsonalisht po i përsonalizoj zhvilimin kulturorë,
03:38
but I also understand
88
203000
2000
mirpo unë gjithashtu e kuptoj
03:40
that this has to be done organically.
89
205000
2000
03:42
Yes, we do have all the resources that we need
90
207000
3000
03:45
in order to develop new cultural institutions,
91
210000
3000
03:48
but what I think is more important
92
213000
2000
03:50
is that we are very fortunate
93
215000
2000
është se ne jemi shumë fatlume
03:52
to have visionary leaders
94
217000
2000
të kemi lider vizjonarë
03:54
who understand that this can't happen from outside,
95
219000
2000
03:56
it has to come from within.
96
221000
2000
duhet të vi nga brenda.
03:58
And guess what?
97
223000
2000
Dhe thuaj qfarë?
04:00
You might be surprised to know that most people in the Gulf
98
225000
3000
04:03
who are leading these cultural initiatives
99
228000
2000
të cilet po drejtojnë këto kultura inicjative
04:05
happen to be women.
100
230000
2000
të ndodhin janë gra.
04:07
I want to ask you, why do you think this is?
101
232000
3000
Dëshiroj t'ju pyes juve përse mendoni se ndodh kjo ?
04:10
Is it because it's a soft option;
102
235000
2000
A është kjo sepse është një opcion i butë;
04:12
we have nothing else to do?
103
237000
2000
04:14
No, I don't think so.
104
239000
2000
Jo, unë nuk mendoj kështu.
04:16
I think that women in this part of the world
105
241000
3000
04:19
realize that culture is an important component
106
244000
2000
04:21
to connect people
107
246000
2000
për të lidhur njerëzit
04:23
both locally and regionally.
108
248000
2000
së bashku lokalisht dhe regjionalishtë.
04:25
It's a natural component
109
250000
2000
Është një komponent natyralë
04:27
for bringing people together, discussing ideas --
110
252000
3000
për ti sjellur njerëzit sëbashku, ti diskutojnë idetë --
04:30
in the same way we're doing here at TED.
111
255000
2000
04:32
We're here, we're part of a community,
112
257000
2000
Ne jemi këtu, jemi pjesë e komunitetit,
04:34
sharing out ideas and discussing them.
113
259000
3000
04:37
Art becomes a very important part
114
262000
2000
Arti bëhet pjesë shumë e rëndësishme
04:39
of our national identity.
115
264000
2000
e identiteti tonë nacionalë
04:41
The existential and social and political impact
116
266000
4000
Zgjerimi dhe përshtypja politike sociale
04:45
an artist has
117
270000
2000
që një artistë ka
04:47
on his nation's development of cultural identity
118
272000
2000
04:49
is very important.
119
274000
2000
është shumë e rëndësishme.
04:51
You know, art and culture is big business.
120
276000
2000
04:53
Ask me.
121
278000
2000
Me pyetni mua.
04:55
Ask the chairpersons and CEOs
122
280000
2000
Pyetni përsonat kyq dhe Shefat ekzektuivë
04:57
of Sotheby's and Christie's.
123
282000
2000
të Sotheby-it dhe Christie.
04:59
Ask Charles Saatchi about great art.
124
284000
3000
Pyet Charles Saatchi rreth artit madhështor.
05:02
They make a lot of money.
125
287000
2000
Ata fitojnë shumë para.
05:04
So I think women in our society
126
289000
2000
Pra mendoj se gratë në shoqërin tonë
05:06
are becoming leaders,
127
291000
2000
janë duke u berë lidere,
05:08
because they realize
128
293000
2000
sepse ato e kuptojnë
05:10
that for their future generations,
129
295000
2000
që për të ardhmen e gjenerates sonë,
05:12
it's very important
130
297000
2000
është shumë e rendësishme
05:14
to maintain our cultural identities.
131
299000
2000
ta mbajmë kulturen dhe identitetin tonë.
05:16
Why else do Greeks demand the return
132
301000
2000
Përse Greket kërkojnë të kthehet
05:18
of the Elgin Marbles?
133
303000
2000
Elgin Marbles?
05:20
And why is there an uproar
134
305000
2000
Dhe përse është një eprorë
05:22

135

3000
05:40
will be talking to you.
142
325000
2000
do t'ju flas juve.
05:42
She lives in New York City, but she doesn't try to be a Western artist.
143
327000
3000
05:45
Instead, she tries to engage
144
330000
2000
05:47
in a very important dialogue
145
332000

në një djalogë shumë të rendësishem
05:49
about her culture, nation and heritage.
146
334000
2000
rreth kultures së saj, nacionalitetit dhe trashigimisë.
05:51
She does that through important visual forms
147
336000
3000
Ajo e benë atë nepërmjet disa formave fizuele shumë të rendësishme
05:54
of photography and film.
148
339000
2000
të fotografis dhe filmit.
05:56
In the same way, Qatar is trying to grow its national museums
149
341000
4000
06:00
through an organic process from within.
150
345000
3000
nepërmjet një procesi organik nga brenda.
06:03
Our mission is of cultural integration and independence.
151
348000
3000
Misjoni ynë i kultures dhe integrimit.
06:06
We don't want to have what there is in the West.
152
351000
2000
06:08
We don't want their collections.
153
353000
2000
Ne nuk i duam koleksionet e tyre.
06:10
We want to build our own identities, our own fabric,
154
355000
3000
Ne dëshirojmë të ndertojmë identitetin tonë, fabrikat tona,
06:13
create an open dialogue
155
358000
2000
krijimin e një dijalogu të hapur
06:15
so that we share our ideas
156
360000
2000
që ti shprendajmë idet tona
06:17
and share yours with us.
157
362000
2000
dhe ti shprendajmë idet e tyre me tonat.
06:19
In a few days,
158
364000
2000
Pas disa ditëve
06:21
we will be opening the Arab Museum of Modern Art.
159
366000
3000
ne do ta hapim Muzeun Arab të artit modernë.
06:24
We have done extensive research
160
369000
2000
Kemi berë kërkime të zgjeruara
06:26
to ensure that Arab and Muslim artists,
161
371000
2000
06:28
and Arabs who are not Muslims --
162
373000
2000
dhe Arabet të cilet nuk janë muslimanë --
06:30
not all Arabs are Muslims, by the way --
163
375000
2000
06:32
but we make sure that they are represented
164
377000
2000
06:34
in this new institution.
165
379000
3000
në këtë situatë të re institucjonale.
06:37
This institution is government-backed
166
382000
2000
Ky institucjonë është qeveritarë
06:39
and it has been the case
167
384000
2000
dhe ka qen rasti
06:41
for the past three decades.
168
386000
2000
për tri dekadat e kaluara.
06:43
We will open the museum in a few days,
169
388000
2000
Ne do ta hapim muzen në ditet e ardhëshme,
06:45
and I welcome all of you to get on Qatar Airways
170
390000
3000
06:48
and come and join us.
171
393000
2000
dhe të na bashkangjiteni neve.
06:50
(Laughter)
172
395000
2000
(Qeshen)
06:52
Now this museum is just as important to us as the West.
173
397000
4000
06:56
Some of you might have heard
174
401000
2000
Ndoshta disa prej jush mund të keni dëgjuar
06:58
of the Algerian artist Baya Mahieddine,
175
403000
3000
për artistin Algerianin Baya Mahieddine,
07:01
but I doubt a lot of people know
176
406000
2000
07:03
that this artist worked in Picasso's studio
177
408000
3000
07:06
in Paris in the 1930s.
178
411000
2000
në Paris në vitin 1930-të.
07:08
For me it was a new discovery.
179
413000
2000
07:10
And I think with time, in the years to come
180
415000
3000
07:13
we'll be learning a lot about our Picassos,
181
418000
2000
ne do të mësojmë shumë më teper rreth Pikasove tonë,
07:15
our Legers and our Cezannes.
182
420000
2000
Legjendaret tonë dhe Cezarjanet.
07:17
We do have artists,
183
422000
2000
Ne kemi artistë,
07:19
but unfortunately we have not discovered them yet.
184
424000
3000
mirpo fatëkeqsisht nuk i kemi zbuluar akoma.
07:22
Now visual expression is just one form
185
427000
3000
Tani shprehja vizuele është vetem një formë
07:25
of culture integration.
186
430000
3000
e integrimit kulturorë.
07:28
We have realized that recently
187
433000
2000
Kemi venë re se kohëve të fundit
07:30
more and more people
188
435000
2000
shumë e më shumë njerëz
07:32
are using the means of YouTube and social networking
189
437000
3000
07:35
to express their stories, share their photos
190
440000
3000
për ti paraqitur tregimet e tyre, ti shprendajnë fotografit e tyre
07:38
and tell their own stories through their own voices.
191
443000
2000
07:40
In a similar way,
192
445000
2000
Në po të njejten menyrë,
07:42
we have created the Doha Film Institute.
193
447000
2000
ne kemi krijuar institutin e filmit Doha
07:44
Now the Doha Film Institute is an organization
194
449000
3000
07:47
to teach people about film and filmmaking.
195
452000
3000
që i mëson njerëzit
07:50
Last year we didn't have one Qatari woman filmmaker.
196
455000
3000
07:53
Today I am proud to say
197
458000
2000
Sotë jam i lumtur t'ju them
07:55
we have trained and educated
198
460000
2000
ne kemi trajtuar dhe edukuar
07:57
over 66 Qatari women filmmakers
199
462000
2000
07:59
to edit, tell their own stories
200
464000
2000
08:01
in their own voices.
201
466000
2000
në zërin e tyre.
08:03
(Applause)
202
468000
6000
(Duartrokitje)
08:09
Now if you'll allow me, I would love to share a one-minute film
203
474000
3000
08:12
that has proven to show
204
477000
2000
i cili ka provuar të tregoj
08:14
that a 60-sec film can be as powerful as a haiku
205
479000
3000
08:17
in telling a big picture.
206
482000
2000
në tregimin e një fotografie të madhe.
08:19
And this is one of our filmmakers' products.
207
484000
3000
08:22
(Video) Boy: Hey listen! Did you know that the stocks are up?
208
487000
3000
(Video) Djali: Hey dëgjo! Ke dëgjuar se stoku është rritur shumë ?
08:25
Who are you playing?
209
490000
2000
Kush po luanë?
08:27
Girl: Uncle Khaled. Here, put on the headscarf.
210
492000
2000
Vajza:Xhaxhi Khaled. Këtu, vendose shallen.
08:29
Khaled: Why would I want to put it on?
211
494000
2000
Khaled: Përse dëshiroj ta vë?
08:31
Girl: Do as you're told, young girl.
212
496000
2000
Vajza: Bejë siq të thonë, vajza e re.
08:33
Boy: No, you play mom and I play dad. (Girl: But it's my game.)
213
498000
3000
Djali: Jo, ju luani mamanë ndërsa unë baba. (Vajza: mirpo është loja ime.)
08:36
Play by yourself then.
214
501000
2000
Luej me veten tuaj.
08:38
Girl: Women! One word and they get upset.
215
503000
3000
Vajza: Grua ! një botë dhe ata merziten.
08:41
Useless.
216
506000
2000
E padobishme.
08:47
Thank you. Thank you!
217
512000
3000
Faliminderit. Faliminderit !
08:51
(Applause)
218
516000
7000
(Duartrokitje)
08:58
SM: Going back to straddling between East and West,
219
523000
3000
09:01
last month we had our second Doha Tribeca Film Festival
220
526000
3000
Muajin e kaluar ne kishim film festivalin e dyt Doha
09:04
here in Doha.
221
529000
2000
këtu në Doha.
09:06
The Doha Tribeca Film Festival
222
531000
2000
Doha tribeca filmë festivalë
09:08
was held at our new cultural hub, Katara.
223
533000
3000
ishte mbajtur tek kultura e jonë, Katara.
09:11
It attracted 42,000 people,
224
536000
2000
kishte atraksion rreth 42,000 përsona,
09:13
and we showcased 51 films.
225
538000
2000
dhe ne shfaqem 51 filma.
09:15
Now the Doha Tribeca Film Festival
226
540000
2000
Tani Doha tribeca film festival
09:17
is not an imported festival,
227
542000
2000
nuk është ndonjë festivalë i rendësishem,
09:19
but rather an important festival
228
544000
2000
09:21
between the cities of New York and Doha.
229
546000
3000
09:24
It's important for two things.
230
549000
2000
Është i rendësishem për dy gjëra.
09:26
First, it allows us to showcase
231
551000
2000
Sëpari, na lejonë neve të shfaqim
09:28
our Arab filmmakers and voices
232
553000
2000
filmbërsit tanë Arab dhe zërat e tyre
09:30
to one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world,
233
555000
2000
09:32
New York City.
234
557000
2000
Nju Jork sity.
09:34
At the same time, we are inviting them
235
559000
2000
09:36
to come and explore our part of the world.
236
561000
2000
09:38
They're learning our culture, our language, our heritage
237
563000
3000
Ata po mësojnë kulturen tonë, gjuhen dhe traditat tona
09:41
and realizing we're just as different
238
566000
3000
09:44
and just the same as each other.
239
569000
3000
09:47
Now over and over again,
240
572000
2000
Tani dhe prap se prap,
09:49
people have said, "Let's build bridges,"
241
574000
2000
njerëzit kanë thën, " Le t ndërtojmë ura,"
09:51
and frankly, I want to do more than that.
242
576000
2000
09:53
I would like break the walls of ignorance
243
578000
2000
Dëshiroj ta thej murin e injurances
09:55
between East and West --
244
580000
2000
në mes të verit dhe përendimit --
09:57
no, not the soft option that we have discussed before,
245
582000
3000
10:00
but rather the soft power
246
585000
2000
mirpo më mirë sesa fuqia e butë
10:02
that Joseph Nye has spoken about before.
247
587000
3000
10:05
Culture's a very important tool to bring people together.
248
590000
3000
10:08
We should not underestimate it.
249
593000
3000
Ne nuk duhet ta nenvlersojmë atë.
10:11
"Know thyself,"
250
596000
2000
"ata e dinë vetë,"
10:13
that is the journey of self-expression and self-realization
251
598000
2000
ata janë gazetaret e vet-shëbyer dhe vet-kuptuar
10:15
that we are traveling.
252
600000
2000
që ne jemi duke udhëtuar.
10:17
Now I don't pretend to have all the answers,
253
602000
2000
10:19
but I know that me as an individual
254
604000
2000
mirpo unë e di si individual
10:21
and we as a nation
255
606000
2000
dhe ne si nacionalitet
10:23
welcome this community
256
608000
2000
e mirëpresim këtë komunitet
10:25
of ideas worth spreading.
257
610000
2000
të idejave që i'a vlenë ti shprendajmë.
10:27
This is a very interesting journey.
258
612000
2000
Ky është një udhëtim shumë interesantë.
10:29
I welcome you on board
259
614000
2000
Ju shprehi mirëseardhje në bordë
10:31
for us to engage and discuss new ideas
260
616000
3000
10:34
of how to bring people together
261
619000
2000
se si ti sjellim njerëzit së bashku
10:36
through cultural initiatives and discussions.

Familjariteti e prish dhe e mytë friken. Provone atë.
10:42
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. Shokran.
