Five years ago, I experienced a bit

Pesë vite më parë provova pak a shumë
00:19
of what it must have been like to be Alice in Wonderland.
1
3783
3336
00:23
Penn State asked me, a communications teacher,
2

2663
00:25
to teach a communications class for engineering students.
3
9782
3340
00:29
And I was scared. (Laughter)
4
13122
2606
Isha e frikësuar. (Te qeshura)
00:31
Really scared. Scared of these students with their big brains
5
15728
3671
00:35
and their big books and their big, unfamiliar words.
6
19399
3707
00:39
But as these conversations unfolded,
7
23106
3205
Por sa u shpalos biseda,
00:42
I experienced what Alice must have when she went down
8
26311
2908
perjetova atë çfare Liza ka përjetuar kur ka zbritur poshte
00:45
that rabbit hole and saw that door to a whole new world.
9
29219
4177
00:49
That's just how I felt as I had those conversations
10
33396
2611
Kjo është tamam ajo çka kam përjetuar kur e bëra këtë bisedë
00:51
with the students. I was amazed at the ideas
11
36007
2749
me studentët. U mahnita nga idetë
00:54
that they had, and I wanted others to experience this wonderland as well.
12
38756
4966
00:59
And I believe the key to opening that door
13
43722
2631
01:02
is great communication.
14
46353
1290
është një komunikim i mirë.
01:03
We desperately need great communication from our
15

01:06
scientists and engineers in order to change the world.
16
50527
3059
shkencëtarët dhe inxhinierët që të ndryshojmë botën.
01:09
Our scientists and engineers are the ones
17
53586
2890
Shkenctarët dhe inxhinierët janë të vetmit
01:12
that are tackling our grandest challenges, from energy
18
56476
3166
01:15
to environment to health care, among others,
19
59642
3005
te ambienti deri tek kujdesi shëndetësor, midis tjerash
01:18
and if we don't know about it and understand it,
20
62647
3162
01:21
then the work isn't done, and I believe it's our responsibility
21
65809
3008
01:24
as non-scientists to have these interactions.
22
68817
2951
si jo-shkenctarë ta krijojmë këtë bashkëveprim
01:27
But these great conversations can't occur if our scientists
23
71768
3160
Por këto biseda nuk bëhen nese shkencëtarët
01:30
and engineers don't invite us in to see their wonderland.
24
74928
3234
01:34
So scientists and engineers, please, talk nerdy to us.
25
78162
5479
01:39
I want to share a few keys on how you can do that
26
83641
2487
Dua të ndaj disa këshilla me ju se si mund ta bëni atë
01:42
to make sure that we can see that your science is sexy
27
86128
4075
01:46
and that your engineering is engaging.
28
90203
2600
dhe se teknologjia është tërheqëse.
01:48
First question to answer for us: so what?
29
92803
3733
Pyteja e parë që këkon përgjigjje: pra çfarë?
01:52
Tell us why your science is relevant to us.
30
96536
3955
Na tregoni pse shkenca juaj ka lidhje me ne.
01:56
Don't just tell me that you study trabeculae,
31
100491
2630
Mos më thoni vetëm se ju studjoni anatomi, (indet)
01:59
but tell me that you study trabeculae, which is the mesh-like structure of our bones
32
103121
3897
02:02
because it's important to understanding and treating osteoporosis.
33
107018
4613
02:07
And when you're describing your science, beware of jargon.
34
111631
4506
Dhe kur e përshkruani shkencën,
kini kujdes me të shprehurit.
02:12
Jargon is a barrier to our understanding of your ideas.
35
116137
3876
02:15
Sure, you can say "spatial and temporal," but why not just say
36
120013
3076
02:18
"space and time," which is so much more accessible to us?
37
123089
3426
"kohë dhe hapsirë" e cila është më e kuptueshme për ne?
02:22
And making your ideas accessible is not the same as dumbing it down.
38
126515
5148
02:27
Instead, as Einstein said, make everything
39
131663
2777
02:30
as simple as possible, but no simpler.
40
134440
3434
02:33
You can clearly communicate your science
41
137874
2773
Ju mund ta shpjegoni qartë shkencën tuaj
02:36
without compromising the ideas.
42
140647
2687
pa i kompromentuar idetë.
02:39
A few things to consider are having examples, stories
43
143334
3945
02:43
and analogies. Those are ways to engage
44
147279
1705
dhe analogji. Këto janë mënyrat për të na tërhequr
02:44
and excite us about your content.
45
148984
2182
dhe të na entuziazmuar për përmbajtjet.
02:47
And when presenting your work, drop the bullet points.
46
151166
6313
Dhe kur e prezantoni punën, harrojeni listen e pikave
02:53
Have you ever wondered why they're called bullet points? (Laughter)
47
157479
3853
A keni menduar pse quhen "pika plumbash"
ne anglisht? (Të qeshura)
02:57
What do bullets do? Bullets kill,
48
161332
2368
Cfare bëjne plumbat? Plumbat vrasin,
02:59
and they will kill your presentation.
49
163700
2312
dhe ato ta vrasin prezantimin tuaj.
03:01
A slide like this is not only boring, but it relies too much
50
166012
4179
03:06
on the language area of our brain, and causes us to become overwhelmed.
51
170191
3727
gjuhësore të trurit, sa na shastis.
03:09
Instead, this example slide by Genevieve Brown is
52
173918
3904
Ne vend te saj, ky shembull diapozitivi
Genevieve Brown është shume
03:13
much more effective. It's showing that the special structure
53
177822
2882
më efektiv. Kjo tregon se struktura e vecante
03:16
of trabeculae are so strong that they actually inspired
54
180704
3664
e trabeculae është kaq e forte sa
ka frymezuar bile
03:20
the unique design of the Eiffel Tower.
55
184368
2855
dizajnin unik te Kullës Eiffel.
03:23
And the trick here is to use a single, readable sentence
56
187223
3680
Dhe marifeti këtu është te përdoresh
një fjali të vetme të lexueshme
03:26
that the audience can key into if they get a bit lost,
57
190903
3052
03:29
and then provide visuals which appeal to our other senses
58
193955
3278
dhe pastaj jep pamje vizuale qe tërheqin edhe shqisat tjera
03:33
and create a deeper sense of understanding
59
197233
2414
dhe krijojne një kuptim më të thellë
03:35
of what's being described.
60
199647
1639
për atë që flitet.
03:37
So I think these are just a few keys that can help
61
201286
2850
03:40
the rest of us to open that door and see the wonderland
62
204136
3522
shumicën prej nesh ta hapim derën
dhe përjetojme "botën e çudirave"
03:43
that is science and engineering.
63
207658
2216
e cila është shkenca dhe inxhinieria.
03:45
And because the engineers that I've worked with have
64
209874
2449
03:48
taught me to become really in touch with my inner nerd,
65
212323
3800
03:52
I want to summarize with an equation. (Laughter)
66
216123
2953
Dua të përmbledh me një ekuacion. (Te qeshura)
03:54
Take your science, subtract your bullet points
67
219076
4245
Merre shkencën, hiqja listen e pikave
03:59
and your jargon, divide by relevance,
68
223321
2778
dhe zhargonin, ndaje nga rendesia,
04:01
meaning share what's relevant to the audience,
69
226099
2447
domethene ndaj ate qe eshte e rendesishme per publikun,
04:04
and multiply it by the passion that you have for
70
228546
2791
dhe shumezoje me pasionin që ke për
04:07
this incredible work that you're doing,
71
231337
2223
punën e pabesueshme që po bën.
04:09
and that is going to equal incredible interactions
72
233560
2778
04:12
that are full of understanding.
73
236338
2474
të cilat janë plot kuptim
04:14
And so, scientists and engineers, when you've solved
74
238812
3462
Pra shkenctarë dhe inxhinere, kur të zgjidhni
04:18
this equation, by all means, talk nerdy to me. (Laughter)
75
242274
5096
këtë ekuacion, ejani dhe me ndriconi mendjen mua.
(Të qeshura)
04:23
Thank you. (Applause)
76
247370
6073
Faleminderit. (Duartrokitje)
