ABOUT THE SPEAKER
David Lang - Maker
David Lang is a maker and the co-founder of OpenROV, a community of ocean lovers who build underwater robots.

Why you should listen

David Lang is a maker whose craving for adventure turned him into an amateur ocean explorer. A few years ago Lang and NASA engineer Eric Stackpole went looking for lost gold (literally) in an underwater cave in the foothills of the Sierra Navada. But they weren't quite sure how to go about it. Without much expertise (or money), the two put initial designs for an underwater robot explorer online. Soon OpenROV was born: a community of citizen ocean explorers who build and constantly improve upon these small remote operated underwater robots.

Lang is also the author of Zero to Maker and a 2013 TED Fellow. He lives on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay.

What we've built isn't unique.
29

01:29
It's how we've built it that's really unique.
30
77781
2874
01:32
So I want to give you a quick story
of how it got started.
31
80655
2981
Dëshiroj t'ju tregoj historinë sesi filloi çdo gjë.
01:35
So a few years ago, my friend Eric and I
32
83636
2271
Para disa vjetesh, unë dhe miku im Eric
01:37
decided we wanted to explore this underwater cave
33
85907
2200
vendosëm të hulumtojmë një shpellë nënujore
01:40
in the foothills of the Sierras.
34
88107
1858
në kodrat e Sierras.
01:41
We had heard this story about lost gold
35
89965
1903
01:43
from a Gold Rush-era robbery,
and we wanted to go up there.
36
91868
2518
01:46
Unfortunately, we didn't have any money
37
94386
1658
01:48
and we didn't have any tools to do it.
38
96044
1823
dhe as vegla për ta bërë këtë punë.
01:49
So Eric had an initial design idea for a robot,
39
97867
3200
01:53
but we didn't have all the parts figured out,
40
101067
2773
01:55
so we did what anybody would do in our situation:
41
103840
2212
01:58
we asked the Internet for help.
42
106052
2038
kërkuam ndihmë në internet.
02:00
More specifically, we created this website,
43
108090
2532
Më specifikisht, ne krijuam këte web faqe,
02:02
openROV.com, and shared
our intentions and our plans
44
110622
2895
openROV.com, dhe shkëmbyem qëllimet dhe planet tona.
02:05
For the first few months, it was just Eric and I
45
113517
2390
02:07
talking back to each other on the forums,
46
115907
2530
02:10
but pretty soon, we started to get feedback
47
118437
2088
por shumë shpejt, filluam të marrim feedback
02:12
from makers and hobbyists,
48
120525
1843
prej krijuesve dhe hobistëve,
02:14
and then actually professional ocean engineers
49
122368
1994
02:16
who had some suggestions for what we should do.
50
124362
3532
02:19
We kept working on it. We learned a lot.
51
127894
1764
Ne vazhduam të punojmë në të. Mësuam shumë.
02:21
We kept prototyping, and eventually,
52
129658
2025
Vazhduam të krijojmë prototipe, dhe më vonë,
02:23
we decided we wanted to go
to the cave. We were ready.
53
131683
2719
ne vendosëm të shkojmë në shpellë. Ne ishim gati.
02:26
So about that time, our little expedition
became quite a story,
54
134402
3440
02:29
and it got picked up in The New York Times.
55
137842
2021
dhe doli edhe në Nju Jork Times.
02:31
And we were pretty much just overwhelmed
56
139863
1812
02:33
with interest from people who wanted a kit
57
141675
1783
i njerëzve që dëshironin këtë model
02:35
that they could build this open ROV themselves.
58
143458
2521
02:37
So we decided to put the project on Kickstarter,
59
145979
3289
Vendosëm të publikojmë projektin në Kickstarter,
02:41
and when we did,
60
149268
1232
dhe kur e publikuam aty,
02:42
we raised our funding goal in about two hours,
61
150500
2075
arritëm synimin e fondeve brenda dy orëve,
02:44
and all of a sudden,
had this money to make these kits.
62
152575
3205
02:47
But then we had to learn how to make them.
63
155780
2195
02:49
I mean, we had to learn small batch manufacturing.
64
157975
2165
02:52
So we quickly learned that our garage
65
160140
3260
Shpejt mësuam se garazhi ynë
02:55
was not big enough to hold our growing operation.
66
163400
2679
02:58
But we were able to do it, we got all the kits made,
67
166079
2156
03:00
thanks a lot to TechShop,
which was a big help to us,
68
168235
2707
03:02
and we shipped these kits all over the world
69
170942
2985
dhe dërguam këto modele anembanë botës
03:05
just before Christmas of last year,
70
173927
1829
pak para Krishtlindjeve të vitit të kaluar,
03:07
so it was just a few months ago.
71
175756
1782
pra ishte vetëm disa muaj më parë.
03:09
But we're already starting to get video
72
177538
1908
Por ne kemi filluar të marrim video
03:11
and photos back from all over the world,
73
179446
1598
dhe foto prej anembanë botës,
03:13
including this shot from under the ice in Antarctica.
74
181044
3030
duke përfshirë edhe këtë pamje nën akullin e Antarktikës.
03:16
We've also learned the penguins love robots.
75
184074
3400
Ne gjithashtu mësuam se pinguinët i duan robotët.
03:19
(Laughter)
76
187474
2013
(Të qeshura)
03:21
So we're still publishing all the designs online,
77
189487
3168
Pra ne ende po publikojmë dizajnet online
03:24
encouraging anyone to build these themselves.
78
192655
2118
03:26
That's the only way that we could have done this.
79
194773
2403
Kjo është mënyra e vetme sesi kemi arritur ta bëjmë këtë.
03:29
By being open source, we've created
80
197176
1659
Duke qenë me kod të hapur, ne kemi krijuar
03:30
this distributed R&D network,
81
198835
2264
03:33
and we're moving faster than
any venture-backed counterpart.
82
201099
3796
dhe ne po lëviznim më shpejt sesa
cdo projekt i mbështetur nga investitorët.
03:36
But the actual robot is really only half the story.
83
204895
3205
03:40
The real potential, the long term potential,
84
208100
2496
Potenciali i vërtetë, potenciali afatgjatë,
03:42
is with this community of DIY ocean explorers
85
210596
2677
03:45
that are forming all over the globe.
86
213273
2396
që po formohen anembanë botës.
03:47
What can we discover
87
215669
1534
Çka mund të zbujojmë
03:49
when there's thousands of these devices
88

kur ka me mijëra pajisje të këtilla
03:51

89

që shetitin nëpër detra?
03:53
So you're probably all wondering: the cave.
90
221153

Sigurisht ju ende keni pyetje në lidhje me shpellën tonë.
03:55
Did you find the gold?
91

A e gjetët arin?
03:57
Well, we didn't find any gold,
92
225255

Në fakt nuk gjetëm ar,
03:58
but we decided that what we found
