ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Joseph Lekuton - Kenyan MP
A teacher, writer and member of the Kenyan parliament, Joseph Lekuton has an inspiring vision for Kenya.

Why you should listen

Born into a Maasai tribe in Northern Kenya, Joseph Lekuton was chosen to attend a missionary boarding school as a child -- sometimes walking 50 miles during vacations to find and rejoin his nomadic family. He won a scholarship to St. Lawrence University, then attended Harvard, and worked as a writer and history teacher in Virginia. He was named a National Geographic Energing Explorer for his work in sharing the culture of Kenya with America, including efforts to share educational resources with nomadic children through the BOMA Fund and Cows for Kids.

In 2006, after a plane crash killed five members of the Kenyan parliament, Lekuton decided to return to Kenya and stand for election to fill the seat in his region. He won a parliamentary seat in the 2006 by-election, and was a member of the winning party in the December 2007 elections -- the results of which continue to be contested throughout Kenya.

My name is Joseph, a Member of Parliament in Kenya.

3000
00:21
Picture a Maasai village,
1
3000
2000
Paramendoni një fshat Maasai,
00:23
and one evening, government soldiers come, surround the village
2
5000
4000
00:27
and ask each elder to bring one boy to school.
3
9000
2000
00:29
That's how I went to school --
4
11000
2000
00:31
pretty much a government guy pointing a gun
5
13000
2000
pak a shumë një ushtar i qeverisë tregoi armën
00:33
and told my father, "You have to make a choice."
6
15000
2000
dhe i tha babait: "Duhet të zgjedhësh."
00:35
So, I walked very comfortably to this missionary school
7
17000
3000
00:38
that was run by an American missionary,
8
20000
2000
që drejtohej nga një misionar amerikan,
00:40
and the first thing the American missionary gave me was a candy.
9
22000
3000
00:43
I had never in my life ever tasted candy.
10
25000
2000
00:45
So I said to myself, with all these hundred other boys,
11
27000
2000
Ndaj thashë me vete, me të gjithë këta njëqind djem të tjerë,
00:47
this is where I belong. (Laughter)
12
29000
3000
ky është vendi i qëlluar për mua. (Të qeshura)
00:50
Stayed
13
32000
1000
Qëndrova
00:51
when everybody else was dropping out.
14
33000
2000
edhe atëherë kur të tjerët largoheshin.
00:53
My family moved; we're nomads.
15
35000
2000
Familja ime u zhvendos ngase jemi nomadë.
00:55
Every time school closed -- it was a boarding school and I was seven --
16
37000
2000
Secilën herë që mbyllej shkolla - ngase ishte shkollë ku edhe banonim dhe unë isha 7 vjeç -
00:57
you had to travel until you find them.
17
39000
2000
00:59
Fifty miles, 40 miles, it doesn't matter.
18
41000
2000
Dyzet apo pesëdhjetë milje, nuk kishte rëndësi.
01:01
You slept in the bush, but you kept going.
19
43000
2000
Flija në pemë dhe vazhdoja udhëtimin.
01:03
And I stayed. I don't know why I stayed, but I stayed.
20
45000
3000
Unë qëndrova në shkollë. S'e di pse, por qëndrova.
01:06
And all of a sudden I passed the national examination,
21
48000
4000
Pastaj papritmas kalova provimet në nivelin kombëtar,
01:10
found myself in a very beautiful high school in Kenya.
22
52000
3000
01:13
And I finished high school. And just walking, I found a man
23
55000
4000
Kështu përfundova shkollën e mesme. Derisa po ecja, gjeta një njeri
01:17
who gave me a full scholarship to the United States.
24
59000
3000
01:20
My mother still lives in a cow-dung hut,
25
62000
2000
01:22
none of my brothers are going to school,
26
64000
2000
01:24
and this man told me, "Here, go."
27
66000
2000
01:26
So I got a scholarship to St. Lawrence University, Upstate New York;
28
68000
4000
Kështu që mora një bursë studimi për në Universitetin "St. Lawrence" në shtetin e Nju Jorkut;
01:30
finished that. And then after that I went to Harvard Graduate School;
29
72000
5000
dhe aty përfundova studimet. Pastaj shkova për studime të larta në Harvard;
01:35
finished that. And then I worked in DC a little bit:
30
77000
3000
përfundova edhe ato studime. Pastaj punova shkurt në Washington:
01:38
I wrote a book for National Geographic and taught history, U.S. history.
31
80000
3000
01:41
And every time, I kept going back home
32
83000
3000
Dhe secilën herë kur kthehesha në shtëpi
01:44
listening to the problems of these people --
33
86000
2000
tek dëgjoja problemet e njerëzve --
01:46
sick people, people with no water, all this stuff --
34
88000
2000
njerëz të sëmurë, pa ujë të pijshëm, të gjitha këto --
01:48
and every time I go back to America, I kept thinking about them.
35
90000
3000
01:51
Then one day, an elder gave me a story and this story went like this:
36
93000
4000
01:55
long time ago, there was a big war between tribes.
37
97000
5000
02:00
And there was this specific tribe that was really afraid of this other Luhya tribe.
38
102000
3000
02:03
And every time, they sent scouts out there to make sure no one attacked them.
39
105000
3000
02:06
So one day, the scouts came running and told the villagers,
40
108000
4000
02:10
"The enemies are coming. Only half an hour away, they'll be here."
41
112000
3000
"Armiqtë po vijnë. Janë vetëm gjysmë ore larg dhe pas pak do të na arrijnë."
02:13
So people scrambled, took their things and ready to go, move out.
42
115000
4000
02:17
But there were two men:
43
119000
2000
Por ishin dy burra:
02:19
one man was blind, one man had no legs -- he was born like that.
44
121000
3000
02:22
The leader of the chiefs said, "No, sorry. We can't take you. You'll slow us down.
45
124000
4000
02:26
We have to flee our women and children, we have to run."
46
128000
4000
02:30
And they were left behind, waiting to die.
47
132000
3000
02:33
But these two people worked something out.
48
135000
3000
Por ata dy burra gjetën një zgjidhje.
02:36
The blind man said, "Look, I'm a very strong man but I can't see."
49
138000
3000
Burri i verbër tha: "Shiko, unë jam shumë i fuqishëm por nuk shikoj dot."
02:39
The man with no legs says, "I can see as far as the end of the world,
50
141000
3000
Burri pa këmbë tha: "Unë shikoj deri tek fundi i botës,
02:42
but I can't save myself from a cat, or whatever animals."
51
144000
5000
02:47
So the blind man went down on his knees, down like this,
52
149000
4000
02:51
and told the man with no legs to go over his back, and stood up.
53
153000
3000
02:54
The man on top can see, the blind man can walk.
54
156000
3000
Njëri shihte kurse tjetri ecte.
02:57
And these guys took off, followed the footsteps of the villagers
55
159000
3000
03:00
until they found and passed them.
56
162000
4000
03:05
So, this was told to me in a setup of elders.
57
167000
4000
03:09
And it's a really poor area. I represent Northern Kenya:
58
171000
3000
Në një rajon të varfër. Unë vij nga pjesa veriore e Kenias:
03:12
the most nomadic, remote areas you can even find.
59
174000
4000
rajon shumë nomad dhe i largët.
03:16
And that man told me, "So, here you are.
60
178000
2000
03:18
You've got a good education from America,
61
180000
2000
03:20
you have a good life in America; what are you going to do for us?
62
182000
4000
03:25
We want you to be our eyes, we'll give you the legs.
63
187000
3000
03:28
We'll walk you, you lead us."
64
190000
2000
Ne ecim pas teje, ti na udhëheq."
03:30
So the opportunity came, and I was always thinking about that:
65
192000
3000
Kështu që mundësia erdhi. Unë gjithnjë po mendoja për këtë gjë:
03:33
"what can I do to help my people?
66
195000
2000
"Çfarë mund të bëj të ndihmoj njerëzit e mi?"
03:35
Every time you go to an area where for 43 years of independence,
67
197000
3000
03:38
we still don't have basic health facilities.
68
200000
3000
nuk ka qendra për kujdes bazë shëndetësor.
03:41
A man has to be transported in a wheelbarrow
69
203000
2000
Njerëzit duhet të transportohen me karrocë dore
03:43
20, 30 kilometers for a hospital. No clean drinking water.
70
205000
2000
20 apo 30 kilometra te spitali. Pastaj s'ka ujë të pijshëm.
03:45
So I said, "I'm going to dedicate myself.
71
207000
3000
Kështu që thashë: "Do t'i dedikohem kësaj pune.
03:48
I'm leaving America. I'm going to run for office."
72
210000
3000
Do të lë Amerikën. Do të konkuroj në zgjedhje."
03:51
So last July ... I moved from America in June, ran in July election and won.
73
213000
8000
03:59
And I came for them, and that's my goal.
74
221000
4000
04:03
And right now I have in place, for the last nine months,
75
225000
3000
04:06
a plan that in five years, every nomad will have clean drinking water.
76
228000
8000
04:14
We're building dispensaries across that constituency.
77
236000
3000
Po ndërtojmë farmaci për njerëzit.
04:17
I'm asking my friends from America to help
78
239000
2000
04:19
with bringing nurses or doctors to help us out.
79
241000
3000
04:22
I'm trying to improve infrastructure.
80
244000
3000
Po mundohem të përmirësoj infrastrukturën.
04:25
I'm using the knowledge I received from the United States
81
247000
2000
04:27
and from my community to move them forward.
82
249000
3000
04:30
I'm trying to develop homegrown solutions to our issues
83
252000
4000
04:34
because we realize that people from outside can come and help us,
84
256000
3000
04:37
but if we don't help ourselves, there's nothing we can do.
85
259000
3000
04:40
So my plan right now as I continue with introducing students to different fields --
86
262000
5000
Pra plani im tani derisa po iu tregoj studentëve për degë të ndryshme studimi --
04:45
some become doctors, some lawyers --
87
267000
2000
disa bëhen doktorë, disa avokatë --
04:47
we want to produce a comprehensive group of people, students,
88
269000
2000
04:49
who can come back and help us see a community grow
89
271000
3000
04:52
that is in the middle of a huge economic recession.
90
274000
4000
04:56
So as I continue to be a Member of Parliament
91
278000
3000
04:59
and as I continue listening to all of you talking about botany,
92
281000
3000
05:02
talking about health, talking about democracy, talking about new inventions,
93
284000
3000
05:05
I'm hoping that one day in my own little community --
94
287000
3000
05:08
which is 26,000 square kilometers,
95
290000
2000
që është rreth 26.000 kilometra katrorë,
05:10
maybe five times the size of Rhode Island -- with no roads,
96
292000
4000
05:14
we'll be able to become a model to help others develop.
97
296000
4000
ne do të mund të bëhemi model i zhvillimit që të tjerët do të mund të ndjekin.
05:18
Thank you very much. (Applause)
98
300000
2000
Ju faleminderit shumë! (Duartrokitje)
