ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Lee Cronin - Chemist
A professor of chemistry, nanoscience and chemical complexity, Lee Cronin and his research group investigate how chemistry can revolutionize modern technology and even create life.

Why you should listen

Lee Cronin's lab at the University of Glasgow does cutting-edge research into how complex chemical systems, created from non-biological building blocks, can have real-world applications with wide impact. At TEDGlobal 2012, Cronin shared some of the lab's latest work: creating a 3D printer for molecules. This device -- which has been prototyped -- can download plans for molecules and print them, in the same way that a 3D printer creates objects. In the future, Cronin says this technology could potentially be used to print medicine -- cheaply and wherever it is needed. As Cronin says: "What Apple did for music, I'd like to do for the discovery and distribution of prescription drugs."

At TEDGlobal 2011, Cronin shared his lab's bold plan to create life. At the moment, bacteria is the minimum unit of life -- the smallest chemical unit that can undergo evolution. But in Cronin's emerging field, he's thinking about forms of life that won't be biological. To explore this, and to try to understand how life itself originated from chemicals, Cronin and others are attempting to create truly artificial life from completely non-biological chemistries that mimic the behavior of natural cells. They call these chemical cells, or Chells.

Cronin's research interests also encompass self-assembly and self-growing structures -- the better to assemble life at nanoscale. At the University of Glasgow, this work on crystal structures is producing a raft of papers from his research group. He says: "Basically one of my longstanding research goals is to understand how life emerged on planet Earth and re-create the process."

00:31
could we make a really coolเย็น universalสากล chemistryเคมี setชุด?
6
15245
4151
00:35
In essenceแก่นแท้, could we "appแอป" chemistryเคมี?

00:40
Now what would this mean, and how would we do it?
8
24429
3183
00:43
Well to startเริ่มต้น to do this,
9
27612
1971
00:45
we tookเอา a 3D printerเครื่องพิมพ์
10
29583
1732
00:47
and we startedเริ่มต้น to printพิมพ์ our beakersบีกเกอร์ and our testทดสอบ tubesหลอด on one sideด้าน
11
31315
4302
00:51
and then printพิมพ์ the moleculeอณู at the sameเหมือนกัน time on the other sideด้าน
12
35617
4065

00:58
And so by printingการพิมพ์ the vesselเรือ and doing the chemistryเคมี at the sameเหมือนกัน time,
14
42836
4434
01:03
we mayอาจ startเริ่มต้น to accessทางเข้า this universalสากล toolkitเครื่องมือ of chemistryเคมี.
15
47270
5167
01:08
Now what could this mean?
16
52437
1548
01:09
Well if we can embedฝัง biologicalชีวภาพ and chemicalสารเคมี networksเครือข่าย like a searchค้นหา engineเครื่องยนต์,
17
53985
5268
01:15
so if you have a cellเซลล์ that's illป่วย that you need to cureรักษา
18
59253
3149
01:18
or bacteriaแบคทีเรีย that you want to killฆ่า,
19
62402
1719
01:20
if you have this embeddedที่ฝัง in your deviceเครื่อง
20
64121
2331
01:22
at the sameเหมือนกัน time, and you do the chemistryเคมี,
21
66452
2449
01:24
you mayอาจ be ableสามารถ to make drugsยาเสพติด in a newใหม่ way.
22
68901
3601
01:28
So how are we doing this in the lab
01:30
Well it requiresต้องมี softwareซอฟต์แวร์, it requiresต้องมี hardwareฮาร์ดแวร์
24
74902
3099
01:33
and it requiresต้องมี chemicalสารเคมี inksหมึกพิมพ์.
25
78001
2366
01:36
And so the really coolเย็น bitบิต is,
26
80367
1453
01:37
the ideaความคิด is that we want to have a universalสากล setชุด of inksหมึกพิมพ์
27
81820
3047
01:40
that we put out with the printerเครื่องพิมพ์,
28
84867
2269
01:43
and you downloadดาวน์โหลด the blueprintพิมพ์เขียว, the organicอินทรีย์ chemistryเคมี for that moleculeอณู
29
87136
4282
01:47
and you make it in the deviceเครื่อง.
30
91418
3000
01:50
And so you can make your moleculeอณู in the printerเครื่องพิมพ์ usingการใช้ this softwareซอฟต์แวร์.
31
94418
5567
01:55
So what could this mean?
32
99985
2199
01:58
Well, ultimatelyในที่สุด, it could mean that you could printพิมพ์ your ownด้วยตัวเอง medicineยา.
33
102184
4947
02:03
And this is what we're doing in the labห้องปฏิบัติการ at the momentขณะ.
