ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Brian Greene - Physicist
Brian Greene is perhaps the best-known proponent of superstring theory, the idea that minuscule strands of energy vibrating in a higher dimensional space-time create every particle and force in the universe.

Why you should listen

Greene, a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, has focused on unified theories for more than 25 years, and has written several best-selling and non-technical books on the subject including The Elegant Universe, a Pulitzer finalist, and The Fabric of the Cosmos — each of which has been adapted into a NOVA mini-series. His latest book, The Hidden Reality, explores the possibility that our universe is not the only universe.

Greene believes science must be brought to general audiences in new and compelling ways, such as his live stage odyssey, Icarus at the Edge of Time, with original orchestral score by Philip Glass, and the annual World Science Festival, which he co-founded in 2008 with journalist Tracy Day.

02:03
But Einsteinไอน์สไต realizedตระหนัก that Newtonนิวตัน had left something out of the storyเรื่องราว,
33
111000
4000
02:07
because even Newtonนิวตัน had writtenเขียน
34
115000
3000
02:10
that althoughแม้ว่า he understoodเข้าใจ how to calculateคำนวณ the effectผล of gravityแรงดึงดูด,
35
118000
5000
02:15
he'dเขาต้องการ been unableไม่สามารถ to figureรูป out how it really worksโรงงาน.
36
123000
3000
02:18
How is it that the Sunดวงอาทิตย์, 93 millionล้าน milesไมล์ away,

39

02:28
And that is a taskงาน to whichที่ Einsteinไอน์สไต setชุด himselfตัวเขาเอง --
40
136000
3000
02:31
to figureรูป out how gravityแรงดึงดูด worksโรงงาน.
41
139000
3000
02:34
And let me showแสดง you what it is that he foundพบ.
42
142000
3000
02:37
So Einsteinไอน์สไต foundพบ
43
145000
1000
02:38
that the mediumกลาง that transmits gravityแรงดึงดูด is spaceช่องว่าง itselfตัวเอง.
44
146000
4000
02:42
The ideaความคิด goesไป like this:
45
150000
2000
02:44
imagineจินตนาการ spaceช่องว่าง is a substrateสารตั้งต้น of all there is.
46
152000
2000
02:46
Einsteinไอน์สไต said spaceช่องว่าง is niceดี and flatแบน, if there's no matterเรื่อง presentนำเสนอ.
47
154000
4000
02:50
But if there is matterเรื่อง in the environmentสิ่งแวดล้อม, suchอย่างเช่น as the Sunดวงอาทิตย์,
48
158000
4000
02:54
it causesสาเหตุ the fabricผ้า of spaceช่องว่าง to warpวิปริต, to curveเส้นโค้ง.
49
162000
4000
02:58
And that communicatesสื่อสาร the forceบังคับ of gravityแรงดึงดูด.
50
166000
2000
03:00
Even the Earthโลก warpsประลองยุทธ์ spaceช่องว่าง around it.
51
168000
3000
03:03
Now look at the Moon
52
171000
2000
03:05
The Moonดวงจันทร์ is keptเก็บไว้ in orbitโคจร, accordingตาม to these ideasความคิด,
53
173000
3000
03:08
because it rollsม้วน alongตาม a valleyหุบเขา in the curvedโค้ง environmentสิ่งแวดล้อม
54
176000
3000
03:11
that the Sunดวงอาทิตย์ and the Moonดวงจันทร์ and the Earthโลก can all createสร้าง by virtueคุณธรรม of theirของพวกเขา presenceการมี.
55
179000
5000
03:16
We go to a full-frameเต็มกรอบ viewดู of this.
56
184000
3000
03:19
The Earthโลก itselfตัวเอง is keptเก็บไว้ in orbitโคจร
57
187000
2000
03:21
because it rollsม้วน alongตาม a valleyหุบเขา in the environmentสิ่งแวดล้อม that's curvedโค้ง
58
189000
4000
03:25
because of the Sun'sดวงอาทิตย์ presenceการมี.
59
193000
2000
03:27
That is this newใหม่ ideaความคิด about how gravityแรงดึงดูด actuallyแท้จริง worksโรงงาน.
60
195000
5000
03:32
Now, this ideaความคิด was testedการทดสอบ in 1919 throughตลอด astronomicalเกี่ยวกับดาราศาสตร์ observationsข้อสังเกต.
61
200000
5000
03:37
It really worksโรงงาน. It describesอธิบาย the dataข้อมูล.
62
205000
3000
03:40
And this gainedได้รับ Einsteinไอน์สไต prominenceชื่อเสียง around the worldโลก.
63
208000
4000
03:44
And that is what got KaluzaKaluza thinking
64
212000
4000
03:48
He, like Einsteinไอน์สไต, was in searchค้นหา of what we call a unifiedปึกแผ่น theoryทฤษฎี.
65
216000
4000
03:52
That's one theory
66
220000
2000
03:54
that mightอาจ be ableสามารถ to describeอธิบาย all of nature'sธรรมชาติ forcesกองกำลัง from one setชุด of ideasความคิด,
67
222000
4000
03:58
one setชุด of principlesหลักการ, one masterเจ้านาย equationสมการ, if you will.
68
226000
4000
04:02
So KaluzaKaluza said to himself
69
230000
2000
04:04
Einsteinไอน์สไต has been ableสามารถ to describeอธิบาย gravityแรงดึงดูด
70
232000
3000
04:07
in termsเงื่อนไข of warpsประลองยุทธ์ and curvesเส้นโค้ง in spaceช่องว่าง --
71
235000
2000
04:09
in factความจริง, spaceช่องว่าง and time, to be more preciseแม่นยำ.
72
237000
3000
04:12
Maybe I can playเล่น the sameเหมือนกัน gameเกม with the other knownที่รู้จักกัน forceบังคับ,
73
240000
5000
04:17
whichที่ was, at that time, knownที่รู้จักกัน as the electromagneticแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า forceบังคับ --
74
245000
3000
04:20
we know of othersคนอื่น ๆ todayในวันนี้, but at that time
75
248000
2000
04:22
that was the only other one people were thinkingคิด about.
76
250000
2000
04:24
You know, the forceบังคับ responsibleรับผิดชอบ for electricityไฟฟ้า
77
252000
2000
04:26
and magneticแม่เหล็ก attractionเสน่ห์ and so forthออกมา.
78
254000
2000
04:28
So KaluzaKaluza saysกล่าวว่า, maybe I can playเล่น the sameเหมือนกัน gameเกม
79
256000
3000
04:31
and describeอธิบาย electromagneticแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า forceบังคับ in termsเงื่อนไข of warpsประลองยุทธ์ and curvesเส้นโค้ง.
80
259000
4000
04:35
That raisedยก a questionคำถาม: warpsประลองยุทธ์ and curvesเส้นโค้ง in what?
81
263000
3000
04:38
Einsteinไอน์สไต had alreadyแล้ว used up spaceช่องว่าง and time,
82
266000
5000
04:43
warpsประลองยุทธ์ and curvesเส้นโค้ง, to describeอธิบาย gravityแรงดึงดูด.
83
271000
2000
04:45
There didn't seemดูเหมือน to be anything elseอื่น to warpวิปริต or curveเส้นโค้ง.
84
273000
3000
04:48
So KaluzaKaluza said, well, maybe there are more dimensionsมิติ of spaceช่องว่าง.
85
276000
5000
04:53
He said, if I want to describeอธิบาย one more forceบังคับ,
86
281000
2000
04:55
maybe I need one more dimensionมิติ.
87
283000
2000
04:57
So he imaginedจินตนาการ that the worldโลก had fourสี่ dimensionsมิติ of spaceช่องว่าง, not threeสาม,
88
285000
4000
05:01
and imaginedจินตนาการ that electromagnetismแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า was warpsประลองยุทธ์ and curvesเส้นโค้ง
89
289000
4000
05:05
in that fourthที่สี่ dimensionมิติ. Now here'sนี่คือ the thing:
90
293000
2000
05:07
when he wroteเขียน down the equationsสมการ describingอธิบาย warpsประลองยุทธ์ and curvesเส้นโค้ง
91
295000
3000
05:10
in a universeจักรวาล with fourสี่ spaceช่องว่าง dimensionsมิติ, not threeสาม,
92
298000
3000
05:13
he foundพบ the oldเก่า equationsสมการ that Einsteinไอน์สไต had alreadyแล้ว derivedที่ได้มา in threeสาม dimensionsมิติ --
93
301000
4000
05:17
those were for gravityแรงดึงดูด --
94
305000
1000
05:18
but he foundพบ one more equationสมการ because of the one more dimensionมิติ.
95
306000
4000
05:22
And when he lookedมอง at that equationสมการ,
96
310000
2000
05:24
it was noneไม่มี other than the equationสมการ
97
312000
2000
05:26
that scientistsนักวิทยาศาสตร์ had long knownที่รู้จักกัน to describeอธิบาย the electromagneticแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า forceบังคับ.
98
314000
3000
05:29
Amazingน่าอัศจรรย์ -- it just poppedโผล่ out.
99
317000
2000
05:31
He was so excitedตื่นเต้น by this realizationการสำนึก
100
319000
3000
05:34
that he ranวิ่ง around his houseบ้าน screamingน่าขันพิลึก, "Victoryชัยชนะ!" --
101
322000
3000
05:37
that he had foundพบ the unifiedปึกแผ่น theoryทฤษฎี.
102
325000
3000
KaluzaKaluza was a man who tookเอา theoryทฤษฎี very seriouslyอย่างจริงจัง.
103
328000
7000
05:47
He, in fact
104
335000
1000
05:48
there is a storyเรื่องราว that when he wanted to learnเรียน how to swimการว่ายน้ำ,
105
336000
3000
05:51
he readอ่าน a bookหนังสือ, a treatiseตำรา on swimmingว่ายน้ำ --
106

Now, but for those of us who are a little bitบิต more practicallyจวน mindedใจ,

two questionsคำถาม immediatelyทันที ariseเกิดขึ้น from his observationการสังเกต.
111
352000
3000
06:07
Numberจำนวน one: if there are more dimensionsมิติ in spaceช่องว่าง, where are they?
112
355000
4000
06:11
We don't seemดูเหมือน to see them.
113
359000
2000
06:13
And numberจำนวน two: does this theoryทฤษฎี really work in detailรายละเอียด,
114
361000
4000
06:17
when you try to applyใช้ it to the worldโลก around us?
115
365000
3000
06:20
Now, the first questionคำถาม was answeredตอบ in 1926

06:24
by a fellowมนุษย์ namedชื่อ Oskarออสการ์ Kleinไคลน์.
117
372000
2000
(Oskar Klein)
06:26
He suggestedข้อเสนอแนะ that dimensionsมิติ mightอาจ come in two varietiesพันธุ์ --
118
374000
4000
06:30
there mightอาจ be bigใหญ่, easy-to-seeง่ายต่อการมองเห็น dimensionsมิติ,
119
378000
3000
06:33
but there mightอาจ alsoด้วย be tinyขนาดเล็ก, curled-upขด dimensionsมิติ,
120
381000
3000
06:36
curledขด up so smallเล็ก, even thoughแม้ they're all around us,
121
384000
3000
06:39
that we don't see them.
122
387000
2000
06:41
Let me showแสดง you that one visuallyสายตา.
123
389000
2000
06:43
So, imagineจินตนาการ you're looking at something
124
391000
2000
06:45
like a cableสายเคเบิล supportingที่สนับสนุน a trafficการจราจร lightเบา.
125
393000
2000
06:47
It's in Manhattanแมนฮัตตัน. You're in Centralศูนย์กลาง Parkจอด -- it's kindชนิด of irrelevantที่ไม่เกี่ยวข้อง --
126
395000
3000
06:50
but the cableสายเคเบิล looksรูปลักษณ์ one-dimensionalหนึ่งมิติ from a distantไกล viewpointมุมมอง,
127
398000
4000
06:54
but you and I all know that it does have some thicknessความหนา.
128
402000
3000
06:57
It's very hardยาก to see it, thoughแม้, from farห่างไกล away.
129
405000
2000
06:59
But if we zoomซูม in and take the perspectiveมุมมอง of, say,
130
407000
2000
07:01
a little antมด walkingที่เดิน around --
131
409000
2000
07:03
little antsมด are so smallเล็ก that they can accessทางเข้า all of the dimensionsมิติ --
132
411000
3000
07:06
the long dimensionมิติ,
133
414000

07:08
but alsoด้วย this clockwiseตามเข็มนาฬิกา, counter-clockwiseทวนเข็มนาฬิกา directionทิศทาง.
134
416000
3000
07:11
And I hopeหวัง you appreciateซาบซึ้ง this.
135
419000
2000
07:13
It tookเอา so long to get these antsมด to do this.
136
421000
2000
07:15
(Laughter
137
423000
1000
07:16
But this illustratesแสดงให้เห็นถึง the factความจริง that dimensionsมิติ can be of two sortsทุกประเภท:
138
424000
3000
07:19
bigใหญ่ and smallเล็ก. And the ideaความคิด that maybe the bigใหญ่ dimensionsมิติ around us
139
427000
4000
07:23
are the onesคน that we can easilyอย่างง่ายดาย see,
140
431000
2000
07:25
but there mightอาจ be additionalเพิ่มเติม dimensionsมิติ curledขด up,
141
433000
3000
07:28
sortประเภท of like the circularกลม partส่วนหนึ่ง of that cableสายเคเบิล,
142
436000
2000
07:30
so smallเล็ก that they have so farห่างไกล remainedยังคงอยู่ invisibleมองไม่เห็น.
143
438000
4000
07:34
Let me showแสดง you what that would look like.
144
442000
2000
07:36
So, if we take a look, say, at spaceช่องว่าง itselfตัวเอง --
145
444000
3000
07:39
I can only showแสดง, of courseหลักสูตร, two dimensionsมิติ on a screenจอภาพ.
146
447000
4000
07:43
Some of you guys will fixแก้ไขปัญหา that one day,
147
451000
2000
07:45
but anything that's not flatแบน on a screenจอภาพ is a newใหม่ dimensionมิติ,
148
453000
2000
07:49
and way down in the microscopicจิ๋ว depthsระดับความลึก of spaceช่องว่าง itselfตัวเอง,
150
457000
4000
07:53
this is the ideaความคิด,
151
461000
1000
07:54
you could have additionalเพิ่มเติม curledขด up dimensionsมิติ --
152
462000
2000
07:56
here is a little shapeรูปร่าง of a circleวงกลม -- so smallเล็ก that we don't see them.
153
464000
3000
07:59
But if you were a little ultraรุนแรง microscopicจิ๋ว antมด walkingที่เดิน around,
154
467000
4000
08:03
you could walkเดิน in the bigใหญ่ dimensionsมิติ that we all know about --
155
471000
2000
08:05
that's like the gridตะแกรง partส่วนหนึ่ง --
156
473000
2000
08:07
but you could alsoด้วย accessทางเข้า the tinyขนาดเล็ก curled-upขด dimensionมิติ
157
475000
3000
08:10
that's so smallเล็ก that we can't see it with the nakedเปลือยกาย eyeตา
158
478000
2000
08:12
or even with any of our mostมากที่สุด refinedกลั่น equipmentอุปกรณ์.
159
480000
3000
08:15
But deeplyลึก tuckedซุก into the fabricผ้า of spaceช่องว่าง itselfตัวเอง,
160
483000
3000
08:18
the ideaความคิด is there could be more dimensionsมิติ, as we see there.
161
486000
4000
08:22
Now that's an explanation
162
490000
4000
08:26
about how the universeจักรวาล could have more dimensionsมิติ than the onesคน that we see.
163
494000
4000
08:30
But what about the secondที่สอง questionคำถาม that I askedถาม:
164
498000
3000
08:33
does the theoryทฤษฎี actuallyแท้จริง work
165
501000
2000
08:35
when you try to applyใช้ it to the realจริง worldโลก?
166
503000

08:37
Well, it turnsผลัดกัน out that Einsteinไอน์สไต and KaluzaKaluza and manyจำนวนมาก othersคนอื่น ๆ
167

08:48
as was understoodเข้าใจ at the time, and, in detailรายละเอียด, it didn't work.
170
516000
4000

08:53
they couldn'tไม่สามารถ get the massมวล of the electronอิเล็กตรอน

08:57
So manyจำนวนมาก people workedทำงาน on it, but by the '40s, certainlyอย่างแน่นอน by the '50s,
174
525000
5000
09:02
this strangeแปลก but very compellingจับใจ ideaความคิด

09:21
it's calledเรียกว่า superstringsuperstring theoryทฤษฎี, as you were indicatingการแสดง.
181
549000
3000
(Superstring theory)
09:24
And the wonderfulยอดเยี่ยม thing is that superstringsuperstring theoryทฤษฎี
182
552000
4000
09:28
has nothing to do at first sightสายตา with this ideaความคิด of extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ,
183
556000
4000
09:32
but when we studyศึกษา superstringsuperstring theoryทฤษฎี,
184
560000
3000
09:35
we find that it resurrectsฟื้นคืน the ideaความคิด in a sparklingที่เป็นประกาย, newใหม่ formฟอร์ม.
185
563000
3000
09:38
So, let me just tell you how that goes
186
566000
2000
09:40
Superstringsuperstring theoryทฤษฎี -- what is it?
187
568000
2000
09:42
Well, it's a theoryทฤษฎี that triesพยายาม to answerตอบ the questionคำถาม:
188
570000
2000
09:44
what are the basicขั้นพื้นฐาน, fundamentalพื้นฐาน, indivisibleแบ่งแยกไม่ได้, uncuttableuncuttable constituentsเป็นคนละเรื่อง
189
572000
5000
09:49
makingการทำ up everything in the worldโลก around us?
190
577000
4000
09:53
The ideaความคิด is like this.
191
581000
2000
09:55
So, imagineจินตนาการ we look at a familiarคุ้นเคย objectวัตถุ, just a candleเทียน in a holderเจ้าของ,
192
583000
5000
10:00
and imagineจินตนาการ that we want to figureรูป out what it is madeทำ of.
193
588000
3000
10:03
So we go on a journeyการเดินทาง deepลึก insideภายใน the objectวัตถุ and examineตรวจสอบ the constituentsเป็นคนละเรื่อง.
194
591000
4000
10:07
So deepลึก insideภายใน -- we all know, you go sufficientlyพอ farห่างไกล down, you have atomsอะตอม.
195
595000
4000
10:11
We alsoด้วย all know that atomsอะตอม are not the endปลาย of the storyเรื่องราว.
196
599000
3000
10:14
They have little electronsอิเล็กตรอน that swarmฝูง around a centralศูนย์กลาง nucleusนิวเคลียส
197
602000
4000
10:18
with neutronsนิวตรอน and protonsโปรตอน.
198
606000
1000
10:19
Even the neutronsนิวตรอน and protonsโปรตอน have smallerที่มีขนาดเล็ก particlesอนุภาค insideภายใน of them knownที่รู้จักกัน as quarksควาร์ก.
199
607000
5000
10:24
That is where conventionalตามธรรมเนียม ideasความคิด stop.
200
612000
3000
10:27
Here is the newใหม่ ideaความคิด of stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี.
201
615000
2000
10:29
Deepลึก insideภายใน any of these particlesอนุภาค, there is something elseอื่น.
202
617000
5000
10:34
This something elseอื่น is this dancingการเต้นรำ filamentใย of energyพลังงาน.
203
622000
3000
10:37
It looksรูปลักษณ์ like a vibratingฟะฟั่น stringเชือก --
204
625000
2000
10:39
that's where the ideaความคิด, stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี comesมา from.
205
627000
2000
10:41
And just like the vibratingฟะฟั่น stringsเงื่อนไข that you just saw in a celloซอขนาดใหญ่
206
629000
3000
10:44
can vibrateสั่น in differentต่าง patternsรูปแบบ,
207
632000
2000
10:46
these can alsoด้วย vibrateสั่น in differentต่าง patternsรูปแบบ.
208
634000
2000
10:48
They don't produceก่อ differentต่าง musicalดนตรี notesบันทึก.
209
636000
2000
10:50
Ratherค่อนข้าง, they produceก่อ the differentต่าง particlesอนุภาค makingการทำ up the worldโลก around us.
210
638000
4000
10:54
So if these ideasความคิด are correctแก้ไข,
211
642000
1000
10:55
this is what the ultra-microscopicพิเศษด้วยกล้องจุลทรรศน์ landscapeภูมิประเทศ of the universeจักรวาล looksรูปลักษณ์ like.
212
643000
5000
11:00
It's builtสร้างขึ้น up of a hugeใหญ่ numberจำนวน
213
648000
2000
11:02
of these little tinyขนาดเล็ก filamentsเส้นใย of vibratingฟะฟั่น energyพลังงาน,
214
650000
4000
11:06
vibratingฟะฟั่น in differentต่าง frequenciesความถี่.
215
654000
2000
11:08
The differentต่าง frequenciesความถี่ produceก่อ the differentต่าง particlesอนุภาค.
216
656000
3000
11:11
The differentต่าง particlesอนุภาค are responsibleรับผิดชอบ
217
659000
3000
11:14
for all the richnessความร่ำรวย in the worldโลก around us.
218
662000
3000
11:17
And there you see unification
219
665000
2000
11:19
because matterเรื่อง particlesอนุภาค, electronsอิเล็กตรอน and quarksควาร์ก,
220
667000
3000
11:22
radiationการแผ่รังสี particlesอนุภาค, photonsโฟตอน, gravitonsgravitons, are all builtสร้างขึ้น up from one entityเอกลักษณ์.
221
670000
6000
11:28
So matterเรื่อง and the forcesกองกำลัง of natureธรรมชาติ all are put togetherด้วยกัน
222
676000
4000
11:32
underภายใต้ the rubricตัวหนังสือแดง of vibratingฟะฟั่น stringsเงื่อนไข.
223
680000
2000
11:34
And that's what we mean by a unifiedปึกแผ่น theoryทฤษฎี.
224
682000
4000
11:38
Now here is the catch
225
686000
2000
11:40
When you studyศึกษา the mathematicsคณิตศาสตร์ of stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี,
226
688000
3000
11:43
you find that it doesn't work
227
691000
2000
11:45

It leadsโอกาสในการขาย us right back to this ideaความคิด of KaluzaKaluza and Kleinไคลน์ --

12:07
that our worldโลก, when appropriatelyอย่างเหมาะสม describedอธิบาย,

12:13
Now you mightอาจ think about that and say, well,

12:16
OK, you know, if you have extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ, and they're really tightlyอย่างแน่นหนา curledขด up,

Now, does stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี offerเสนอ an answerตอบ?

13:31

13:32
But we believe the answerตอบ for why those numbersหมายเลข have the valuesค่า they do

And the wonderfulยอดเยี่ยม thing is, if those numbersหมายเลข

13:41
had any other valuesค่า than the knownที่รู้จักกัน onesคน,

13:47
This is a deepลึก questionคำถาม.
268
815000
1000
13:48
Why are those numbersหมายเลข so finelyประณีต tunedติดตามความคืบหน้า
269
816000
2000

13:52
when we recognizeรับรู้ that if you fiddleซอ with those numbersหมายเลข --
271
820000
3000
13:55
if I had 20 dialsหน้าปัด up here
272
823000
2000
13:57
and I let you come up and fiddleซอ with those numbersหมายเลข,
273
825000
2000
13:59
almostเกือบจะ any fiddlingที่เล่นซอ makesยี่ห้อ the universeจักรวาล disappearหายไป.
274
827000
4000
14:03
So can we explainอธิบาย those 20 numbersหมายเลข?
275
831000
3000
14:06
And stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี suggestsแสดงให้เห็น that those 20 numbersหมายเลข
276
834000
2000
14:08
have to do with the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ.
277
836000
2000
14:10
Let me showแสดง you how.
278
838000
2000
14:12
So when we talk about the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ in stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี,
279
840000
4000
14:16
it's not one extraพิเศษ dimensionมิติ,
280
844000
2000
14:18
as in the olderเก่ากว่า ideasความคิด of KaluzaKaluza and Kleinไคลน์.
281
846000
4000
14:22
This is what stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี saysกล่าวว่า about the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ.
282
850000
3000
14:25
They have a very richรวย, intertwinedพัน geometryเรขาคณิต.
283
853000
3000
14:28
This is an exampleตัวอย่าง of something knownที่รู้จักกัน as a Calabi-Yauคาลาบี-เหยา shapeรูปร่าง --
284
856000
4000
(Calabi-Yau)
14:32
nameชื่อ isn't all that importantสำคัญ.
285
860000
2000
14:34
But, as you can see,
286
862000
2000
14:36
the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ foldพับ in on themselvesตัวเอง
287
864000
3000
14:39
and intertwineทำให้พันกัน in a very interestingน่าสนใจ shapeรูปร่าง, interestingน่าสนใจ structureโครงสร้าง.
288
867000
4000
14:43
And the ideaความคิด is that if this is what the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ look like,
289
871000
5000
14:48
then the microscopicจิ๋ว landscapeภูมิประเทศ of our universeจักรวาล all around us
290
876000
4000
14:52
would look like this on the tiniestน้อยที่สุด of scalesตาชั่ง.
291
880000
2000
14:54
When you swingแกว่ง your handมือ,
292
882000
1000
14:55
you'dคุณควรที่จะ be movingการเคลื่อนย้าย around these extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ over and over again,
293
883000
3000
14:58
but they're so smallเล็ก that we wouldn'tจะไม่ know it.
294
886000
2000
15:00
So what is the physicalกายภาพ implicationความหมาย, thoughแม้, relevantที่เกี่ยวข้อง to those 20 numbersหมายเลข?
295
888000
3000
15:03
Considerพิจารณา this. If you look at the instrumentตราสาร, a Frenchฝรั่งเศส hornเขา,
296
891000
3000
15:06
noticeแจ้งให้ทราบ that the vibrationsการสั่นสะเทือน of the airstreamsAirstreams
297
894000
3000
15:09
are affectedได้รับผล by the shapeรูปร่าง of the instrumentตราสาร.
298
897000
2000
15:11
Now in stringเชือก theoryทฤษฎี,
299
899000
2000
15:13
all the numbersหมายเลข are reflectionsสะท้อน of the way stringsเงื่อนไข can vibrateสั่น.
300
901000
3000
15:16
So just as those airstreamsAirstreams
301
904000
2000
15:18
are affectedได้รับผล by the twistsบิด and turnsผลัดกัน in the instrumentตราสาร,
302
906000
3000
15:21
stringsเงื่อนไข themselvesตัวเอง will be affectedได้รับผล
303
909000
2000
15:23
by the vibrationalการสั่น patternsรูปแบบ in the geometryเรขาคณิต withinภายใน whichที่ they are movingการเคลื่อนย้าย.
304
911000
4000
15:27
So let me bringนำมาซึ่ง some stringsเงื่อนไข into the storyเรื่องราว.
305
915000
2000
15:29
And if you watch these little fellowsเพื่อน vibratingฟะฟั่น around --
306
917000
3000
15:32
they'llพวกเขาจะ be there in a secondที่สอง -- right there,
307
920000
2000
15:34
noticeแจ้งให้ทราบ that they way they vibrateสั่น is affectedได้รับผล
308
922000
2000
15:36
by the geometryเรขาคณิต of the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ.
309
924000
2000
15:38
So, if we knewรู้ว่า exactlyอย่างแน่นอน what the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ look like --
310
926000
3000
15:41
we don't yetยัง, but if we did --
311
929000
2000
15:43
we should be ableสามารถ to calculateคำนวณ the allowedได้รับอนุญาต notesบันทึก,

15:48
And if we could calculateคำนวณ the allowedได้รับอนุญาต vibrationalการสั่น patternsรูปแบบ,
314
936000
3000
15:51
we should be ableสามารถ to calculateคำนวณ those 20 numbersหมายเลข.
315
939000
3000
15:54
And if the answerตอบ that we get from our calculationsการคำนวณ
316
942000
4000
15:58
agreesตกลง with the valuesค่า of those numbersหมายเลข

319
950000

16:05
this in manyจำนวนมาก waysวิธี would be the first fundamentalพื้นฐาน explanationคำอธิบาย
320
953000
5000
16:10
for why the structureโครงสร้าง of the universeจักรวาล is the way it is.
321
958000
5000
16:15
Now, the secondที่สอง issueปัญหา that I want to finishเสร็จสิ้น up with is:
322
963000
3000
16:18
how mightอาจ we testทดสอบ for these extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ more directlyโดยตรง?
323
966000
5000

16:26
that mightอาจ be ableสามารถ to explainอธิบาย

16:33
or can we actuallyแท้จริง testทดสอบ for these extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ?
327
981000
3000
16:36
And we think -- and this is, I think, very exciting
328
984000
2000
16:38
that in the nextต่อไป fiveห้า yearsปี or so we mayอาจ be ableสามารถ to testทดสอบ

Here'sต่อไปนี้คือ how it goesไป.
16:49

17:16
How would we know it?

17:18
Well, we'llดี measureวัด the amountจำนวน of energyพลังงาน after the collisionการปะทะกัน,

Let me showแสดง you that ideaความคิด visuallyสายตา.

So, imagineจินตนาการ we have a certainบาง kindชนิด of particleอนุภาค calledเรียกว่า a gravitonGraviton --
348
1045000
3000
17:40
that's the kindชนิด of debrisเศษ we expectคาดหวัง to be ejectedพุ่งออกมา out,
349
1048000

17:44
if the extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ are realจริง.
350
1052000

17:46
But here'sนี่คือ how the experimentการทดลอง will go.
351
1054000
1000
17:47
You take these particlesอนุภาค. You slamเสียงดังปัง them togetherด้วยกัน.
352
1055000
3000
17:50
You slamเสียงดังปัง them togetherด้วยกัน, and if we are right,
353
1058000

17:52
some of the energyพลังงาน of that collisionการปะทะกัน

will go into debrisเศษ that fliesแมลงวัน off into these extraพิเศษ dimensionsมิติ.
355
1062000

17:58
So this is the kindชนิด of experimentการทดลอง

18:07
if we see that kindชนิด of particleอนุภาค ejectedพุ่งออกมา
359
1075000
