ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paola Antonelli - Design curator
Paola Antonelli is on a mission to introduce -- and explain -- design to the world. With her shows at New York's Museum of Modern Art, she celebrates design's presence in every part of life.

Why you should listen

Since she stepped back from practicing architecture in order to focus on writing about design, teaching and curating gallery exhibitions, Italian native Paola Antonelli has become a force to be reckoned with in the design world. Working at the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1994, she is senior curator of the gallery's Architecture and Design department and, as of 2012, the museum's first ever director of research and development. Antonelli has worked on shows such as "Humble Masterpieces," which celebrated traditionally unheralded design icons such as the paperclip; "Design and the Elastic Mind," considering the relationship of design and technology, and "Talk to Me ," which looked at design and the communication of people and objects.

Ever mindful that the majority of visitors to MOMA are attracted by artists such as Picasso and Matisse, Antonelli works to ensure that if they do stumble across a design-related show, they'll be both entertained and enlightened. In 2012, she led a move to acquire 14 video games for the museum's permanent collection.

So, everybody's每个人的 always suggesting提示 new humble谦卑 masterpieces名作,
38

4000
02:14
and at MoMA纽约现代艺术博物馆 we put out some books图书

122000
1000
02:15
just for people to suggest建议 their own拥有 humble谦卑 masterpieces名作.
40
123000
4000
02:19
And when you do that, usually平时 you get 80 percent百分 pornA片 and 20 percent百分 real真实 suggestions建议,
41
127000
5000
02:24
and instead代替 it was all -- almost几乎 -- all good suggestions建议.
42

02:29
And a lot of nationalism民族主义 came来了 in.

but they were very proud骄傲
45

1000
02:36
so every一切 Spaniard西班牙人 said "la fregofrego." And Italians意大利 did the pizza比萨.
46
144000
3000
02:39
And I wanted to show显示 you, also, the suggestions建议 from Kentucky肯塔基 are pretty漂亮 good --

03:11
what I've been thinking思维 of for 13 years年份 ever since以来 I got to MoMA纽约现代艺术博物馆.
58
179000
4000
03:15
I'm Italian意大利. In Italy意大利, design设计 is normal正常.

4000
03:36
In Italy意大利, in Milan米兰 especially特别,

03:38
contemporary现代的 art艺术 really doesn't have that much of a place地点.
65
206000
4000
03:42
But design设计 -- oh, my God.

04:06
But design设计, for some reason原因, is still misunderstood误解 for decoration装饰.
74
234000
4000
04:10
It's really interesting
75
238000
2000
04:12
what many许多 people think when I say the word "design设计" is they think of
76
240000
4000
04:16
this kind of overdesigned过度设计 -- in this case案件, it's overdesigned过度设计 on purpose目的, but --
77
244000
5000

04:23
They think of somebody choosing选择 fabrics面料.
79

04:25
Design设计 can be that, of course课程, but it can also be this.
80
253000
4000
04:29
It can be a school学校 of design设计 in Jerusalem耶路撒冷 that tries尝试 to find a better way

because, as you know, Israel以色列 deploys展开时 one gas加油站 mask面具 per person including包含 babies婴儿.
83
263000

04:41
So, what these designers设计师 do is they find a way to lower降低 the neckline领口,
84
269000
5000
04:46
so that instead代替 of being存在 completely全然 strangled勒死, a teenager青少年 can also sip a Coke可乐.
85
274000
6000

05:04
However然而 cruel残忍, however然而 ruthless无情 you can think this is it's a great design设计,

05:10
and it is miles英里 away from the fancy幻想 furniture家具,

05:27
in that people usually平时 tend趋向 to know about your exhibition展览 or see the exhibitions展览,

05:32
and that is power功率 because in a design设计 museum博物馆 I wouldn't不会 have as many许多 visitors游客.
96
320000

05:37
I'm very well aware知道的 that 80 percent百分 of my public上市 is there to see Picasso毕加索 and Matisse马蒂斯,

06:29
that then sparked引发 a whole整个 line线 of furniture家具.
111
377000

06:32
And then there was good design设计 for very low price价钱.
112
380000
4000
06:37
There were a lot of programs程式 in architecture建筑 and design设计 that were about

07:23
So you see, the range范围 is really quite相当 diverse多种.
124
431000
4000
07:28
And then, for instance, this other exhibition展览
125
436000
2000
07:30
that was entitled标题 WorkspheresWorkspheres in 2001,
126
438000
3000
07:34
where I asked different不同 designers设计师 to come up with ideas思路 for
127
442000
4000
07:38
the new type类型 of work styles款式 that were happening事件 in the world世界 at that time.
128
446000
5000
07:43
And you see IDEOIDEO there.
129
451000
2000
07:45
It was beautiful美丽 -- it was called Personal个人 Skies天空.
130
453000
2000
07:48
The idea理念 was that if you had a cubicle, you could project项目 a sky天空 on top最佳
131
456000
4000
07:52
of your head and have your own拥有 "Cielo切洛 in Una尤娜 Stanza" -- a sky天空 in a room房间 --
132
460000
3000
07:56
it's a very famous著名 Italian意大利 song歌曲.
133
464000
2000
07:58
And other examples例子: this was Marti马蒂 GuixeGuixe about working加工 on the go,
134
466000
3000
08:02
and Hella海拉 Jongerius容格里斯, my favorite喜爱, about how to work at home.
135
470000
3000
Hella Jongerus,
08:05
And this lets让我们 me introduce介绍 a very important重要 idea理念 about design设计:
136
473000
4000
08:10
designers设计师 are the biggest最大 synthesizers合成 in the world世界.
137
478000
3000
08:13
What they do best最好 is make a synthesis合成 of human人的 needs需求,
138
481000
4000
08:18
current当前 conditions条件 in economy经济, in materials物料, in sustainability可持续性 issues问题,
139
486000
4000
08:22
and then what they do at the end结束 -- if they are good --
140
490000
4000
08:26
is much more than the sum of its parts部分.
141
494000
2000
08:28
Hella海拉 Jongerius容格里斯 is a person that is able能够 to make a synthesis合成
142
496000
3000
而Hella Jongerius是
08:31
that is really quite相当 amazing惊人
143
499000
2000
08:34
and also quite相当 hilarious欢闹的.
144
502000
1000
08:35
The idea理念 behind背后 her work was that
145
503000
3000
08:38
at that time, everybody每个人 was saying you have to really divide划分 your life.
146
506000
4000
08:42
Instead代替, she said, "No, no. Work and leisure闲暇 can be together一起."
147
510000
3000
08:45
Yeah, that's particularly尤其 gorgeous华丽 -- it's the TV电视 dinner晚餐 of 2001.
148
513000
4000
08:49
There have been many许多 other exhibitions展览 in the meantime与此同时,
149
517000
3000
08:53
but I don't want to focus焦点 on my shows节目.
150
521000
1000
08:54
I would like, instead代替, to talk about how great some designers设计师 are.
151
522000
4000
08:58
I've always had a hard time with the word "maverick特立独行."
152
526000
2000
09:00
I came来了 to the United联合的 States状态 13 years年份 ago, and to this day
153
528000
2000
09:02
I have to ask, "What does that mean?"
154
530000
3000
09:05
So, this morning早上 I went to see on the dictionary字典 and it said that
155
533000
3000
09:08
there was this gentleman绅士 that was not branding品牌 its cattle黄牛.
156
536000
3000
09:11
Therefore因此, he was not following以下 everybody's每个人的 lead,
157
539000
3000
09:14
and therefore因此, he was a maverick特立独行.
158
542000
1000
09:15
So, designers设计师 do need to be mavericks小牛,
159
543000
4000
09:19
because the best最好 way to design设计 a successful成功 object目的 --
160
547000
3000
09:22
and also an object目的 that we were missing失踪 before --
161
550000
4000
09:26
is to pretend假装 that either it never existed存在
162
554000
3000
09:29
or that people will be able能够 to have a new behavior行为 with it.
163
557000
4000
09:33
So, Safe安全 is the last exhibition展览 that I did at MoMA纽约现代艺术博物馆
164
561000
4000
09:37
and it ended结束 at the beginning开始 of last year.
165
565000
2000
09:40
It was about design设计 that deals交易 with safety安全 and deals交易 with protection保护.
166
568000
3000
09:43
It's a long story故事 because it started开始 before 2001 and it was called Emergency.
167
571000
5000
09:48
And then when 9/11 happened发生, I had a shock休克 and I canceled取消 the exhibition展览
168
576000
6000
09:54
until直到, slowly慢慢地 but surely一定, it came来了 back --
169
582000
2000
09:57
as a half-full半满 glass玻璃 instead代替 of half-empty半空状态 --
170
585000
3000
10:00
and it was about protection保护 and safety安全.
171
588000
1000
10:02
But it ranged不等 from such这样 items项目 as a complete完成 de-mining扫雷 equipment设备 to
172
590000
7000
10:09
these kind of water-sterilizing水消毒 straws秸秆,
173
597000
4000
10:13
so it was really wide-ranging广泛.
174
601000
1000
10:14
It also had ... you know, Cameron卡梅伦 and I worked工作 a little bit together一起,
175
602000
3000
10:18
and some of the entries that you see in his website网站 were actually其实 in the exhibition展览.
176
606000
4000
10:22
But what is interesting有趣 is that we don't need to talk about design设计 and art艺术 anymore;
177
610000
6000
10:29
design设计 uses使用 whatever随你 tools工具 it has at its disposal处置 in order订购 to make a point.
178
617000
4000
10:33
It's a sense of economy经济 and a sense, also, of humor幽默.
179
621000
3000
10:36
This is a beautiful美丽 project项目 by Ralph拉尔夫 BorlandBorland公司, who's谁是 South African非洲人.
180
624000
4000
10:40
It's a suit适合 for civil国内 disobedience不服从.
181
628000
2000
10:42
The idea理念 is that when you have a riot暴动 or a protest抗议
182
630000
3000
10:45
and the police警察 comes towards you, you're wearing穿着 this thing --
183
633000
3000
10:48
it's like a big heart and it has a loudspeaker喇叭 over your heart
184
636000
3000
10:52
so your heartbeat心跳 is amplified放大 --
185
640000
1000
10:53
and the police警察 is reminded提醒;
186
641000
1000
10:55
it's like having a flower in front面前 of the rifle步枪.
187
643000
3000
10:58
And also, you can imagine想像, a whole整个 group of people with the same相同 suit适合
188
646000
5000
11:03
will have this mounting安装 collective集体 heartbeat心跳 that will be scary害怕 to the police警察.
189
651000
4000
11:07
So, designers设计师 sometimes有时 don't do things that are immediately立即
190
655000
3000
11:10
functional实用, but they're functional实用 to our understanding理解 of issues问题.
191
658000
3000
Fiona Raby
11:16
did this series系列 of objects对象 that are about our anguish痛苦 and our paranoia偏执,
193
664000
6000
11:22
like this hideaway furniture家具 that's made制作 in the same相同 wood as your floor地板
194
670000
4000
11:26
so it disappears消失 completely全然 and you can hide隐藏 away;
195
674000
2000
11:28
or even better, the huggable令人喜爱的 atomic原子 mushroom蘑菇, which哪一个 got me an article文章

on the Bulletin公告 of Atomic原子 Scientists科学家们 of the United联合的 States状态 --
197
681000
2000
11:36
I don't think it ever happened发生 before at MoMA纽约现代艺术博物馆;
198
684000
1000
11:38
or this Faraday法拉第 Chair椅子 that is supposed应该 to protect保护 you from radiations辐射.
199
686000
3000
11:41
But the interesting有趣 thing in the exhibition展览 is the discovery发现 that
200
689000
5000
11:47
the ultimate最终 shelter庇护 is your sense of self,
201
695000
2000
11:49
and there are quite相当 a few少数 designers设计师 that are working加工 on this particular特定 topic话题.
202
697000
4000
11:54
This is Cindy辛迪 van面包车 den巢穴 Bremen不来梅, who is a Dutch荷兰人 designer设计师

Cindy van der Bremen,

do whatever随你 they want to do without having to uncap摘帽 themselves他们自己.
206
713000
4000
12:09
And sometimes有时 by doing this kind of research研究,
207
717000
4000
12:13
you encounter遭遇 such这样 beautiful美丽 ideas思路 of design设计.
208
721000
2000
12:15
TwanTWAN VerdonckVerdonck is really young年轻, I think he's 27, and working加工 together一起 with
209
723000
6000
Twan Verdonck
12:21
some psychologist心理学家 he did a series系列 of toys玩具 that are for sensorial感觉的
210
729000
3000
12:25
stimulation促进 for children孩子 that have psychological心理 impairments障碍.
211
733000
2000
12:27
They're quite相当 beautiful美丽.
212
735000
1000
12:29
They range范围 from this fluffy蓬松 toy玩具 that is about hugging拥抱 you --
213
737000
3000
12:32
because autistic自闭症 children孩子 like to be hugged拥抱 tight, so it has a spring弹簧 inside --
214
740000
3000
12:36
all the way to this doll娃娃 with a mirror镜子 so the child儿童 can see him or herself她自己
215
744000
5000
12:41
in the mirror镜子 and regain恢复 a sense of self.
216
749000
2000
12:45
Design设计 really looks容貌 upon the whole整个 world世界
217
753000
3000
12:48
and it considers考虑 the world世界 in all of its different不同 ranges范围.
218
756000
3000
12:51
I was recently最近 at a conference会议 on luxury豪华 organized有组织的 by the Herald先锋 Tribune论坛 in Istanbul伊斯坦布尔.
219
759000
5000
12:56
And it was really interesting有趣 because I was the last speaker扬声器
220
764000
2000
12:59
and before me there were people that were really talking about luxury豪华,
221
767000
3000
13:02
and I didn't want to be a party派对 pooper扫兴的人 but at the same相同 time
222
770000
3000
13:06
I felt that I had to kind of bring带来 back the discourse演讲 to reality现实.
223
774000
2000
13:08
And the truth真相 is that there are very different不同 kinds of luxury豪华,
224
776000
5000
13:14
and there's luxury豪华 that is relative相对的 for people that don't have that much.
225
782000
4000
13:18
I want to make this point by showing展示 you two examples例子 of
226
786000
5000
13:23
design设计 coming未来 from a sense of economy经济 -- very, very clear明确 limits范围.
227
791000
5000
13:28
This is Cuba古巴, and this is the recycling回收 of a squeaky吱吱 toy玩具 as a bicycle自行车 bell,
228
796000
6000
13:34
and this is a raincoat雨衣 that is made制作 out of rice白饭 sacks麻袋.
229
802000
5000
13:39
So they're quite相当 beautiful美丽, but they're beautiful美丽 because
230
807000
2000
13:41
they're so smart聪明 and economical经济.
231
809000
2000
13:44
And here is the work of two brothers兄弟 from Sao圣保罗 Paulo圣保罗,

13:47
Fernando费尔南多 and Humberto温贝托 Campana坎帕纳, who got inspired启发 by the poverty贫穷 and

13:53
smartness机灵 that they saw around them to do pieces of furniture家具 that now are

13:57
selling销售 for an enormous巨大 amount of money.
235
825000
2000
13:59
But that's because of the kind of strangeness陌生感 of the market市场 itself本身.
236
827000
4000
14:03
So really, design设计 takes everything into account帐户,
237
831000
3000
14:07
and the interesting有趣 thing is that as the technology技术 advances进步,
238
835000
3000
14:10
as we become成为 more and more wireless无线 and impalpable极细,
239
838000
4000
14:14
designers设计师, instead代替, want us to be hands-on动手.
240
842000
3000
14:18
This is a whole整个 series系列 of furniture家具 that wants to engage从事 you physically物理.

14:45
It's quite相当 beautiful美丽 because somehow不知何故, this is a gorgeous华丽 moment时刻 for design设计.

873000
5000
14:50
Many许多 years年份 ago I heard听说 a mathematician数学家 from Vienna维也纳, whose谁的 name名称 was Marchetti马尔凯蒂,
