01:54
it is an absolute绝对 transformation转型.
42
102840
2240
01:57
It's a coming未来 of age年龄 for bringing使 data数据
into the humanitarian人道主义 world世界.
43
105640
3400
02:02
It's exciting扣人心弦. It's inspiring鼓舞人心.
44
110160
2656
02:04
But we're not there yet然而.
45
112840
1200
02:09
because I'm going to be putting companies公司
47
117640
1976
02:11
on the hot seat座位 to step up
and play the role角色 that I know they can.
48
119640
3120
02:17
My experiences经验 back in Rome罗马 prove证明
49
125520
2816
02:20
using运用 data数据 you can save保存 lives生活.
50
128360
2080
02:23
OK, not that first attempt
51
131440
2456
02:25
but eventually终于 we got there.
52
133920
2576
02:28
Let me paint涂料 the picture图片 for you.
53
136520
1736
02:30
Imagine想像 that you have to plan计划
breakfast早餐, lunch午餐 and dinner晚餐
54
138280
2736
02:33
for 500,000 people,
55
141040
1616
02:34
and you only have
a certain某些 budget预算 to do it,
56
142680
2136
02:40
Well, what should you do?
What's the best最好 way to handle处理 it?
58
148920
2762
02:44
Should you buy购买 rice白饭, wheat小麦, chickpea鹰嘴豆, oil?
59
152280
2760
02:47
How much?
60
155760
1216
02:49
It sounds声音 simple简单. It's not.
61
157000
2136
02:51
You have 30 possible可能 foods食品,
and you have to pick five of them.
62
159160
3216
02:54
That's already已经 over 140,000
02:57
Then for each food餐饮 that you pick,
64
165840
1696
02:59
you need to decide决定 how much you'll你会 buy购买,
65
167560
1976
03:01
where you're going to get it from,
66
169560
1696
03:03
where you're going to store商店 it,
67
171280
1480
03:05
how long it's going to take to get there.
68
173760
1976
03:07
You need to look at all of the different不同
transportation运输 routes路线 as well.
69
175760
3336
03:11
And that's already已经
over 900 million百万 options选项.
70
179120
2080
03:14
If you considered考虑 each option选项
for a single second第二,
71
182120
2376
03:16
that would take you
over 28 years年份 to get through通过.
72
184520
2336
03:21
So we created创建 a tool工具
03:23
to weed野草 through通过 all 900 million百万 options选项
75
191640
2616
03:26
in just a matter of days.
76
194280
1360
03:28
It turned转身 out to be incredibly令人难以置信 successful成功.
77
196560
2240
03:31
In an operation手术 in Iraq伊拉克,
78
199400
1256
03:32
we saved保存 17 percent百分 of the costs成本,
79
200680
2536
03:35
and this meant意味着 that you had the ability能力
to feed饲料 an additional额外 80,000 people.
80
203240
4136
03:39
It's all thanks谢谢 to the use of data数据
and modeling造型 complex复杂 systems系统.
81
207400
4400
03:44
But we didn't do it alone单独.
82
212800
1280
03:46
The unit单元 that I worked工作 with in Rome罗马,
they were unique独特.
83
214840
2736
03:49
They believed相信 in collaboration合作.
84
217600
1736
03:51
They brought in the academic学术的 world世界.
85
219360
1696
03:53
They brought in companies公司.
86
221080
1280
03:55
And if we really want to make big changes变化
in big problems问题 like world世界 hunger饥饿,
87
223200
3616
03:58
we need everybody每个人 to the table.
88
226840
2560
04:02
We need the data数据 people
04:05
leading领导 the way,
90
233000
1256
04:06
and orchestrating策划
just the right types类型 of engagements订婚
91
234280
2576
04:08
with academics学者, with governments政府.
92
236880
1696
04:10
And there's one group that's not being存在
leveraged杠杆 in the way that it should be.
93
238600
3696
04:14
Did you guess猜测 it? Companies公司.
94
242320
2096
04:16
Companies公司 have a major重大的 role角色 to play
in fixing定影 the big problems问题 in our world世界.
95
244440
3600
04:20
I've been in the private私人的 sector扇形
for two years年份 now.
96
248880
2416
04:23
I've seen看到 what companies公司 can do,
and I've seen看到 what companies公司 aren't doing,
97
251320
3576
04:26
and I think there's three main主要 ways方法
that we can fill that gap间隙:
98
254920
3376
04:30
by donating捐赠 data数据,
04:33
and by donating捐赠 technology技术
to gather收集 new sources来源 of data数据.
100
261440
3480
04:37
This is data数据 philanthropy慈善事业,
101
265920
1576
04:39
and it's the future未来 of corporate企业
04:43
Bonus奖金, it also makes品牌 good business商业 sense.
103
271160
2600
they collect搜集 mountains of data数据,
104
274920
3216
04:50
so the first thing they can do
is start开始 donating捐赠 that data数据.
105
278160
2762
04:52
Some companies公司 are already已经 doing it.
106
280946
2190
04:55
Take, for example,
04:57
They opened打开 up their data数据
in Senegal塞内加尔 and the Ivory象牙 Coast
108
285600
2776
05:02
that if you look at the patterns模式
in the pings to the cell细胞 phone电话 towers,
110
290400
3334
05:05
you can see where people are traveling旅行.
111
293758
1938
05:07
And that can tell you things like
112
295720
2176
05:09
where malaria疟疾 might威力 spread传播,
and you can make predictions预测 with it.
113
297920
3096
05:13
Or take for example
an innovative创新 satellite卫星 company公司.
114
301040
2896
05:15
They opened打开 up their data数据 and donated捐赠 it,
115
303960
2016
05:18
and with that data数据 you could track跟踪
116
306000
1656
05:19
how droughts干旱 are impacting影响
05:22
With that you can actually其实 trigger触发
aid援助 funding资金 before a crisis危机 can happen发生.
118
310920
3680
05:27
This is a great start开始.
119
315560
1280
05:29
There's important重要 insights见解
just locked锁定 away in company公司 data数据.
120
317840
2880
05:34
And yes, you need to be very careful小心.
121
322480
1816
05:36
You need to respect尊重 privacy隐私 concerns关注,
for example by anonymizing匿名 the data数据.
122
324320
3576
05:39
But even if the floodgates开闸 opened打开 up,
123
327920
2776
05:42
and even if all companies公司
donated捐赠 their data数据
124
330720
2536
05:45
to academics学者, to NGOs非政府组织,
05:48
it wouldn't不会 be enough足够
to harness马具 that full充分 impact碰撞 of data数据
126
336560
2976
05:54
Why?
128
342320
1456
05:55
To unlock开锁 insights见解 in data数据,
you need decision决定 scientists科学家们.
129
343800
3240
05:59
Decision决策 scientists科学家们 are people like me.
130
347760
2576
06:02
They take the data数据, they clean清洁 it up,
131
350360
1816
06:04
transform转变 it and put it
into a useful有用 algorithm算法
132
352200
2256
06:06
that's the best最好 choice选择
to address地址 the business商业 need at hand.
133
354480
2840
06:09
In the world世界 of humanitarian人道主义 aid援助,
there are very few少数 decision决定 scientists科学家们.
134
357800
3696
06:13
Most of them work for companies公司.
135
361520
1640
06:16
So that's the second第二 thing
that companies公司 need to do.
136
364480
2496
06:19
In addition加成 to donating捐赠 their data数据,
137
367000
1696
06:20
they need to donate
06:23
Now, companies公司 will say, "Ah! Don't take
our decision决定 scientists科学家们 from us.
139
371520

06:38
it would actually其实 make more sense

06:41
over a long period,
say for example five years年份.
144
389800

06:44
This might威力 only amount
