ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Edith Widder - Marine biologist
Edith Widder combines her expertise in research and technological innovation with a commitment to stopping and reversing the degradation of our marine environment.

Why you should listen

A specialist in bioluminescence, Edith Widder helps design and invent new submersible instruments and equipment to study bioluminescence and enable unobtrusive observation of deep-sea environments. Her innovative tools for exploration have produced footage of rare and wonderful bioluminescent displays and never-before-seen denizens of the deep, including, most recently, the first video ever recorded of the giant squid, Architeuthis, in its natural habitat.

In 2005 she founded the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA), which is dedicated to protecting aquatic ecosystems and the species they sustain through the development of innovative technologies and science-based conservation action.;  In an effort to protect and revitalize the ocean she loves she has been focusing on developing tools for finding and tracking pollution -- a major threat to all of our water ecosystems and ultimately to human health. She was awarded a MacArthur "genius" grant in 2006.

In 2012, Widder was among the team that filmed the giant squid (Architeuthis) for the first time in its home ocean.

02:47
And you'll你會 note注意 there's no light coming未來 from them right now,
55
152000
3000
02:50
either because they're dead --
56
155000

02:52
(Laughter
57
157000
2000
02:54
or because I need to stir攪拌 them up in some way
58
159000

02:57
for you to see what bioluminescence生物發光 really looks容貌 like.
59
162000
4000
03:01
(Gasps
60
166000
3000
03:05
Oops哎呀. Sorry.
61
170000

啊!對不起
03:07
(Laughter
62
172000
9000
03:16
I spend most of my time working加工 in the dark黑暗; I'm used to that.
63
181000
3000
03:19
Okay.
64
184000
2000
03:21
So that light
65
186000
2000
這光
03:23
was made製作 by a bioluminescent生物發光 dinoflagellate甲藻,
66
188000
3000
03:28
So why would a single-celled單細胞 alga藻類
68
193000
2000
03:30
need to be able能夠 to produce生產 light?
69
195000
2000
03:32
Well, it uses使用 it to defend保衛 itself本身 from its predators大鱷.
70
197000
3000
03:35
The flash is like a scream驚叫 for help.
71
200000
2000
03:37
It's what's known已知 as a bioluminescent生物發光 burglar竊賊 alarm報警,
72
202000
3000
03:40
and just like the alarm報警 on your car汽車 or your house,
73
205000
3000
03:43
it's meant意味著 to cast unwanted不需要 attention注意 onto the intruder侵入者,
74
208000
3000
03:46
thereby從而 either leading領導 to his capture捕獲
75
211000
3000
03:49
or scaring驚嚇 him away.
76
214000
2000
03:51
There's a lot of animals動物 that use this trick,
77
216000
2000
03:53
for example this black黑色 dragonfish龍魚.
78
218000
2000
03:55
It's got a light organ器官 under its eye.
79
220000
2000
03:57
It's got a chin下巴 barbel觸鬚.
80
222000
2000
03:59
It's got a lot of other light organs器官 you can't see, but you'll你會 see in here in a minute分鐘.
81
224000
3000
04:02
So we had to chase this in the submersible潛水 for quite相當 sometime某時,
82
227000
4000
04:06
because the top最佳 speed速度 of this fish is one knot,
83
231000
3000
04:09
which哪一個 was the top最佳 speed速度 of the submersible潛水.
84
234000
2000
04:11
But it was worth價值 it,
85
236000
2000
04:13
because we caught抓住 it in a special特別 capture捕獲 device設備,
86
238000
2000
04:15
brought it up into the lab實驗室 on the ship,
87
240000
2000
04:17
and then everything on this fish lights燈火 up.
88
242000
3000
04:20
It's unbelievable
04:22
The light organs器官 under the eyes眼睛 are flashing閃爍.
90
247000
2000
04:24
That chin下巴 barbel觸鬚 is flashing閃爍.
91
249000
2000
04:26
It's got light organs器官 on its belly肚皮 that are flashing閃爍,
92
251000
2000
04:30
It's a scream驚叫 for help; it's meant意味著 to attract吸引 attention注意.
94
255000
3000
04:33
It's phenomenal
95
258000
2000
04:35
And you normally一般 don't get to see this
96
260000
2000
04:37
because we've我們已經 exhausted the luminescence發光 when we bring帶來 them up in nets.
97
262000
3000
04:41
There's other ways方法 you can defend保衛 yourself你自己 with light.
98
266000
3000
04:44
For example, this shrimp
99
269000
2000
04:46
releases發布 its bioluminescent生物發光 chemicals化學製品 into the water
100
271000
3000
04:49
just the way a squid烏賊 or an octopus章魚 would release發布 an ink墨水 cloud.
101
274000
3000
04:52
This blinds百葉窗 or distracts分心 the predator捕食者.
102
277000
3000
04:55
This little squid烏賊 is called the fire shooter射手
103
280000
3000
04:58
because of its ability能力 to do this.
104
283000
2000
05:00
Now it may可能 look like a tasty可口 morsel一口,
105
285000
3000
05:03
or a pig's head with wings翅膀 --
106
288000
2000
05:05
(Laughter
107
290000
3000
05:08
but if it's attacked襲擊,
108
293000
3000
05:11
it puts看跌期權 out a barrage彈幕 of light --
109
296000
3000
05:14
in fact事實, a barrage彈幕 of photon光子 torpedoes魚雷.
110
299000
3000
05:18
I just barely僅僅 got the lights燈火 out in time
111
303000
2000
05:20
for you to be able能夠 to see those gobs採空區 of light
112
305000
2000
05:22
hitting the transect screen屏幕
113
307000
2000
05:24
and then just glowing泛著.
114
309000
2000
05:26
It's phenomenal
115
311000
2000
05:30
So there's a lot of animals動物 in the open打開 ocean海洋 --
116
315000
2000
05:32
most of them that make light.
117
317000
2000
05:34
And we have a pretty漂亮 good idea理念, for most of them, why.
118
319000
2000
05:36
They use it for finding發現 food餐飲, for attracting吸引 mates隊友,
119
321000
3000
05:39
for defending衛冕 against反對 predators大鱷.
120
324000
2000
05:41
But when you get down to the bottom底部 of the ocean海洋,
121
326000
2000
05:43
that's where things get really strange奇怪.
122
328000
3000
05:46
And some of these animals動物
123
331000
2000
05:48
are probably大概 inspiration靈感 for the things you saw in "Avatar阿凡達,"
124
333000
3000
05:51
but you don't have to travel旅行 to Pandora潘多拉 to see them.
125
336000
3000
05:54
They're things like this.
126
339000
2000
05:56
This is a golden金色 coral珊瑚, a bush襯套.
127
341000
2000
05:58
It grows成長 very slowly慢慢地.
128
343000
2000
06:00
In fact事實, it's thought that some of these
129
345000
2000
06:02
are as much as 3,000 years年份 old,
130
347000
2000
06:04
which哪一個 is one reason原因 that bottom底部 trawling拖網 should not be allowed允許.
131
349000
4000
06:08
The other reason原因 is this amazing驚人 bush襯套 glows光暈.
132
353000
4000
06:12
So if you brush up against反對 it,
133
357000
2000
06:14
any place地點 you brushed against反對 it,
134
359000
2000
06:16
you get this twinkling閃爍 blue-green藍綠 light
135
361000
3000
06:19
that's just breathtaking驚險.
136
364000
3000
06:22
And you see things like this.
137
367000
2000
06:24
This looks容貌 like something out of a Dr博士. Seuss蘇斯 book --
138
369000
2000
06:26
just all manner方式 of creatures生物 all over this thing.
139
371000
4000
06:30
And these are flytrap捕蠅草 anemones海葵.
140
375000
3000
06:33
Now if you poke it, it pulls in its tentacles
141
378000
3000
06:36
But if you keep poking it,
142
381000
2000
06:38
it starts啟動 to produce生產 light.
143
383000
3000
06:41
And it actually其實 ends結束 up looking like a galaxy星系.
144
386000
4000
06:45
It produces產生 these strings字符串 of light,
145
390000
2000
06:47
presumably想必 as some form形成 of defense防禦.
146
392000
3000
06:50
There are starfish海星 that can make light.
147
395000
3000
06:53
And there are brittle stars明星 that produce生產 bands of light
148
398000
3000
06:56
that dance舞蹈 along沿 their arms武器.
149
401000
3000
06:59
This looks容貌 like a plant,
150
404000
2000
07:01
but it's actually其實 an animal動物.
151
406000
2000
07:03
And it anchors itself本身 in the sand
152
408000
2000
07:05
by blowing up a balloon氣球 on the end結束 of its stock股票.
153
410000
3000
07:08
So it can actually其實 hold保持 itself本身 in very strong強大 currents電流,
154
413000
2000
07:10
as you see here.
155
415000
2000
07:12
But if we collect蒐集 it very gently平緩, and we bring帶來 it up into the lab實驗室
156
417000
3000
07:15
and just squeeze it at the base基礎 of the stock股票,
157
420000
3000
07:18
it produces產生 this light
158
423000
2000
07:20
that propagates傳播 from stem to the plume,
159
425000
2000
07:22
changing改變 color顏色 as it goes,
160
427000
3000
07:25
from green綠色 to blue藍色.
161
430000
3000
07:30
added添加 for you viewing觀看 pleasure樂趣.
163
435000
2000
07:32
(Laughter
164
437000
3000
07:35
But we have no idea理念 why it does that.
165
440000
2000
07:37
Here's這裡的 another另一個 one. This is also a sea pen鋼筆.
166
442000
2000
07:39
It's got a brittle star hitching拴馬 a ride.
167
444000
3000
07:42
It's a green綠色 saber軍刀 of light.
168
447000
2000
07:44
And like the one you just saw,
169
449000
2000
07:46
it can produce生產 these as bands of light.
170
451000
2000
07:48
So if I squeeze the base
171
453000
2000
07:50
the bands go from base基礎 to tip小費.
172
455000
3000
07:54
If I squeeze the tip小費, they go from tip小費 to base基礎.
173
459000
3000
08:00
So what do you think happens發生 if you squeeze it in the middle中間?
174
465000
3000
08:04
(Gasps
175
469000
3000
08:07
I'd be very interested有興趣 in your theories理論 about what that's about.
176
472000
3000
08:10
(Laughter
177
475000
2000
08:12
So there's a language語言 of light in the deep ocean海洋,
178
477000
2000
08:14
and we're just beginning開始 to understand理解 it,
179
479000
3000
08:17
and one way we're going about that
180
482000
2000
08:19
is we're imitating冒充 a lot of these displays顯示器.
181
484000
2000
08:21
This is an optical光纖 lure that I've used.
182
486000
2000
08:23
We call it the electronic電子 jellyfish海蜇.
183
488000
2000
08:25
It's just 16 blue藍色 LEDs發光二極管
184
490000
2000
08:27
that we can program程序 to do different不同 types類型 of displays顯示器.
185
492000
2000
08:29
And we view視圖 it with a camera相機 system系統 I developed發達 called Eye-in-the-Sea眼在這海
186
494000
3000
08:32
that uses使用 far red light that's invisible無形 to most animals動物,
187
497000
2000
08:34
so it's unobtrusive不顯眼的.
188
499000
2000
08:36
So I just want to show顯示 you
189
501000
2000
08:38
some of the responses回复 we've我們已經 elicited引起
190
503000
2000
08:40
from animals動物 in the deep sea.
191
505000
2000
08:42
So the camera's相機 black黑色 and white白色.
192
507000
2000
08:44
It's not high-resolution
08:46
And what you're seeing眼看 here is a bait box
194
511000
2000
08:48
with a bunch of -- like the cockroaches蟑螂 of the ocean海洋 --
195
513000
3000
08:51
there are isopods等足類動物 all over it.
196
516000
2000
08:53
And right in the front面前
197
518000
2000
正前方
08:55
is the electronic電子 jellyfish海蜇.
198
520000
2000
08:57
And when it starts啟動 flashing閃爍,
199
522000
2000
08:59
it's just going to be one of the LEDs發光二極管 that's flashing閃爍 very fast快速.
200
524000
3000
09:02
But as soon不久 as it starts啟動 to flash --
201
527000
2000
09:04
and it's going to look big, because it blooms綻放 on the camera相機 --
202
529000
2000
09:06
I want you to look right here.
203
531000
2000
09:08
There's something small there that responds響應.
204
533000
3000
09:11
We're talking to something.
205
536000
2000
09:13
It looks容貌 like a little of string pearls珍珠 basically基本上 --
206
538000
4000
09:17
in fact事實, three strings字符串 of pearls珍珠.
207
542000
3000
09:20
And this was very consistent
208
545000
2000
09:22
This was in the Bahamas巴哈馬 at about 2,000 feet.
209
547000
2000
09:24
We basically基本上 have a chat room房間 going on here,
210
549000
3000
09:27
because once一旦 it gets得到 started開始, everybody's每個人的 talking.
211
552000
3000
09:30
And I think this is actually其實 a shrimp
212
555000
2000
09:32
that's releasing釋放 its bioluminescent生物發光 chemicals化學製品 into the water.
213
557000
3000
09:35
But the cool thing is, we're talking to it.
214
560000
2000
09:37
We don't know what we're saying.
215
562000
3000
09:40
Personally親自, I think it's something sexy性感的.
216
565000
2000
09:42
(Laughter
217
567000
2000
09:44
And then finally最後,
218
569000
2000
最後
09:46
I want to show顯示 you some responses回复 that we recorded記錄
219
571000
2000
09:48
with the world's世界 first deep-sea深海 webcam攝像頭,
220
573000
3000
09:51
which哪一個 we had installed安裝 in Monterey蒙特雷 Canyon峽谷 last year.
221
576000
2000
09:53
We've我們已經 only just begun開始 to analyze分析 all of this data數據.
222
578000
3000
09:56
This is going to be a glowing泛著 source資源 first,
223
581000
3000
09:59
which哪一個 is like bioluminescent生物發光 bacteria.
224
584000
2000
10:01
And it is an optical光纖 cue球桿
225
586000
2000
指引著
10:03
that there's carrion腐肉 on the bottom底部 of the ocean海洋.
226
588000
3000
10:06
So this scavenger清道夫 comes in,
227
591000
3000
10:09
which哪一個 is a giant巨人 sixgillsixgill shark鯊魚.
228
594000
2000
10:11
And I can't claim要求 for sure
229
596000
2000
10:13
that the optical光纖 source資源 brought it in, because there's bait right there.
230
598000
3000
10:16
But if it had been following以下 the odor氣味 plume,
231
601000
2000
10:18
it would have come in from the other direction方向.
232
603000
2000
10:20
And it does actually其實 seem似乎 to be trying
233
605000
2000
10:22
to eat the electronic電子 jellyfish海蜇.
234
607000
3000
10:25
That's a 12-foot-long-英尺 giant巨人 sixgillsixgill shark鯊魚.
235
610000
4000
10:29
Okay, so this next下一個 one is from the webcam攝像頭,
236
614000
3000
10:32
and it's going to be this pinwheel風車 display顯示.
237
617000
3000
10:35
And this is a burglar竊賊 alarm報警.
238
620000
3000
10:38
And that was a Humboldt洪堡 squid烏賊,
239
623000
2000
10:40
a juvenile少年 Humboldt洪堡 squid烏賊, about three feet long.
240
625000
3000
10:43
This is at 3,000 feet in Monterey蒙特雷 Canyon峽谷.
241
628000
3000
10:46
But if it's a burglar竊賊 alarm報警, you wouldn't不會 expect期望 it to attack攻擊 the jellyfish海蜇 directly.
242
631000
3000
10:49
It's supposed應該 to be attacking進攻 what's attacking進攻 the jellyfish海蜇.
243
634000
3000
10:52
But we did see a bunch of responses回复 like this.
244
637000
3000
10:55
This guy is a little more contemplative
245
640000
3000
10:58
"Hey, wait a minute分鐘.
246
643000
2000
“嘿,等等
11:00
There's supposed應該 to be something else其他 there."
247
645000
2000
11:02
He's thinking思維 about it.
248
647000
3000
11:05
But he's persistent
249
650000
2000
11:07
He keeps保持 coming未來 back.
250
652000
2000
11:09
And then he goes away for a few少數 seconds
251
654000
2000
11:11
to think about it some more,
252
656000
2000
11:13
and thinks,
253
658000
2000
11:15
"Maybe if I come in from a different不同 angle角度."
254
660000
3000
"也許我需要從另一個角度進攻"
11:19
(Laughter
255
664000
3000
11:22
Nope.
256
667000
2000
失敗
11:24
So we are starting開始 to get a handle處理 on this,
257
669000
3000
11:27
but only just the beginnings開始.
258

11:29
We need more eyes眼睛 on the process處理.
259
