ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robin Chase - Transport networker
With Zipcar, Robin Chase introduced car-crazy America to the concept of non-ownership. Now she's flipping that model with Buzzcar, which lets you rent your own auto to your neighbors.

Why you should listen

If she weren't a proven entrepreneur, you might imagine Robin Chase as a transportation geek, a dedicated civil servant, endlessly refining computer models of freeway traffic. If she weren't such a green-conscious problem-solver, you might take her for a startup whiz. Case in point: In 2000, Chase focused her MIT business training on a car-sharing scheme imported from Europe and co-founded Zipcar, now the largest car-sharing business in the world. Using a wireless key, location awareness and Internet billing, members pick up Zipcars at myriad locations anytime they want one.

Now Chase has launched Buzzcar, a car-sharing service in France with a twist: instead of a fleet of green Zipcars, the service lets users share their own cars and make money off their unused capacity. Call it peer-to-peer auto rental.

Read this insightful interview with Chase about starting a business and raising kids (including a supermodel).

05:03
Building建造 these platforms平台 for participation參與 are so nontrivial平凡 to do.
89
287752
5051
05:08
I think of the difference區別 of Google谷歌 Video視頻 versus YouTubeYouTube的.
90
292803
4013
05:12
Who would have thought that two young年輕 guys and a start-up啟動

05:18
I actually其實 have no idea理念 why. I didn't talk to them.
93
302188
2092
05:20
But I'm thinking思維, you know, they probably大概 had
94
304280
2632
05:22
the "share分享" button按鍵 a little bit brighter光明 and to the right,
95
306912
1979
05:24
and so it was easier更輕鬆 and more convenient方便 for the two sides雙方
96
308891
2994
05:27
that are always participating參與 on these networks網絡.
97
311885

05:30
So I actually其實 know a lot about building建造 a peer窺視 platform平台 now,
98
314965
4199
05:35
and a Peers同行, Inc公司. company公司, because I've spent花費
99
319164
1861
05:36
the last two years年份 doing that in Paris巴黎.
100
321025
3399
05:40
So let me take you back how it's so incredibly令人難以置信 different不同
101
324424
3421
05:43
building建造 BuzzcarBuzzcar than it was building建造 ZipcarZipcar公司,
102
327845
2875
05:46
because now every一切 single thing we do has these two
103
330720
2280
05:48
different不同 bodies身體 that I have to be thinking思維 about:
104
333000
2427
05:51
the owners擁有者 who are going to provide提供 the cars汽車
105
335427
2864
05:54
and the drivers司機 who are going to rent出租 them.
106
338291
2447
I have to think about what is right for both sides雙方.
107
340738
3472
06:00
There are many許多, many許多 examples例子 and I'll give you one
108
344210
2464
06:02
that is not my favorite喜愛 example: insurance保險.
109
346674
3322
06:05
It took me a year and a half to get the insurance保險 just right.
110
349996
4529
06:10
Hours小時 and hours小時 of sitting坐在 with insurers保險公司 and many許多 companies公司
111
354525
2989
06:13
and their thoughts思念 about risk風險 and how this is totally完全 innovative創新,
112
357514
3746
06:17
they'd他們會 never thought of it before.
113
361260
1831
06:18
Way too much money, I just can't even go there, with lawyers律師,
114
363091
3367
06:22
trying to figure數字 out how this is different不同, who's誰是 responsible主管 to whom,
115
366458
2784
06:25
and the result結果 was that we were able能夠 to provide提供 owners擁有者
116
369242
3588
06:28
protection保護 for their own擁有 driving主動 records記錄 and their own擁有 history歷史.
117
372830
4292
06:33
The cars汽車 are completely全然 insured投保 during the rental出租,
118
377122
1816
06:34
and it gives drivers司機 what they need, and what do they need?
119
378938
3664
06:38
They need a low deductible
120
382602
2505
06:43
So this was a trick to get these two sides
122
387355
2884
06:46
So now I want to take you to the moment時刻 of --
123
390239
4248
06:50
When you're an entrepreneur企業家, and you've started開始 a new company公司,
124
394487
3968
06:54
there's the, here's這裡的 all the stuff東東 we do beforehand預先,

126
400849
3926
07:00
So all those months個月 of work, they come into play.
127

07:05
Last June六月 1, we launched推出. It was an exciting扣人心弦 moment時刻.

09:20
This would not be possible可能 to do that in economic經濟 fashion時尚

09:26
Back to this spectrum
170
550770
2142
09:28
So what's happening事件 is, we had the yuck side,
171
552912
2716
09:31
but we actually其實 had this real真實 wow side.
172
555628

09:33
And I can tell you two great stories故事.
173
557852
2740
09:36
A driver司機 was telling告訴 me that they went to rent出租 a car汽車
174
560592
2967
09:39
to go up the coast of France法國 and the owner所有者 gave it to them,
175
563559
3735
09:43
and said, "You know what, here's這裡的 where the cliffs懸崖 are,
176
567294
1992
09:45
and here's這裡的 all the beaches海灘, and this is my best最好 beach海灘,
177
569286

09:47
and this is where the best最好 fish restaurant餐廳 is."
178
571806
2800
09:50
And the peers同行 also become成為,
179
574606
2836
09:55
and so at the last minute分鐘 people can --
181
579703
2271
09:57
a driver司機 can say, "Hey, you know what, I really need the car汽車,
182
581974
2657
10:00
is it available可得到?" And that person will say,
183
584631
1490
10:02
"Sure, my wife's妻子 at home. Go pick up the keys按鍵. Go do it."
184
586121
3111
10:05
So you can have these really nice不錯 things that can't happen發生,
185
589232
3399
10:08
and it's a kind of "Wow!" and I want to say "Wow!"
186
592631
3832
10:12
type類型 of thing that's happening事件 here, because individuals個人,
187
596463
2480
10:14
if you're a company公司, what happens發生 is you might威力 have
188
598943
2871
10:17
10 people who are in charge收費 of innovation革新,
189
601814

10:19
or 100 people who are in charge收費 of innovation革新.
190
603564
1958
10:21
What happens發生 in Peer窺視, Inc公司. companies公司 is that you have
191
605522
3504
10:24
tens and hundreds數以百計 and thousands數千 and even millions百萬
192
609026
3072
10:27
of people who are creating創建 experiments實驗 on this model模型,
193
612098
3103
10:31
and so out of all that influence影響 and that effort功夫,
194
615201
2585
10:33
you are having this exceptional優秀 amount of innovation革新
195
617786
4391
10:38
that is coming未來 out.
196
622177
2419
10:40
So one of the reasons原因, if we come back to why did I
197
624596
3368
10:43
call it BuzzcarBuzzcar? I wanted to remind提醒 all of us
198
627964
2841
10:46
about the power功率 of the hive蜂巢,
199
630805
2876

10:56
And for me, when I think about our future未來,

640638
3420

10:59
and all of those problems問題 that seem似乎 incredibly令人難以置信 large,
203
644058
3328
11:03
the scale規模 is impossible不可能, the urgency is there,
204
647386
3086
11:06
Peers同行, Inc公司. provides提供 the speed速度 and scale規模
205
650472
3034
11:09
and the innovation革新 and the creativity創造力 that is going to answer回答 these problems問題.
206
653506
4586
11:13
All we have to do is create創建 a fabulous極好 platform平台 for participation參與 -- nontrivial平凡.
207
658092
5317
11:19
So I continue繼續 to think that
208
663409
2777
11:22
transportation運輸 is the center中央 of the hard universe宇宙.
209
666186
3255
11:25
All problems問題 come back to transportation運輸 for me.
210
669441
2324
11:27
But there are all these other areas that are these profound
211
671765

11:31
big problems問題 that I know that we can work on,

11:37
but there's this really fabulous極好 group of things
214
681753

215
684298
