Jeff Speck - Urban planner
Jeff Speck is a city planner and the author of "Walkable City."

Why you should listen

Jeff Speck is a city planner and architectural designer who, through writing, lectures, and built work, advocates internationally for more walkable cities.

As Director of Design at the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003 through 2007, he oversaw the Mayors' Institute on City Design and created the Governors' Institute on Community Design, a federal program that helps state governors fight suburban sprawl. Prior to joining the Endowment, Speck spent ten years as Director of Town Planning at Duany Plater-Zyberk and Co., a leading practitioner of the New Urbanism, where he led or managed more than forty of the firm's projects.

Speck is the co-author of Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream as well as The Smart Growth Manual. His latest book, Walkable City -- which Christian Science Monitor calls "timely and important, a delightful, insightful, irreverent work" -- has been the best-selling city-planning title of this decade.

01:27
And there's an alternative替代.
29
75097

01:28
You know, we say, half the world世界 is living活的 in cities城市.
30
76681
1588
01:30
Well, in America美國, that living活的 in cities城市,

01:57
When I was growing生長 up in the '70s,
43

02:22
than on housing住房, slightly more,
53
130361
2238
02:24
because of this phenomenon現象 called "drive駕駛 till直到 you qualify修飾,"
54
132599
3233
02:27
finding發現 homes家園 further進一步 and further進一步 and further進一步
55
135832
2418
02:30
from the city centers中心 and from their jobs工作,
56
138250

02:33
so that they're locked鎖定 in this, two, three hours小時,
57

2525
02:35
four hours小時 a day of commuting上下班.
58
143702
2197
02:37
And these are the neighborhoods社區, for example,
59
145899
1474
02:39
in the Central中央 Valley of California加州
60
147373
2422
02:41
that weren't hurt傷害 when the housing住房 bubble泡沫 burst爆裂
61

3107
02:44
and when the price價錢 of gas加油站 went up;
62
152902
2222
02:47
they were decimated元氣大傷.
63
155124
2268
02:49
And in fact事實, these are many許多
64
157392
1266
02:50
of the half-vacant半懸空 communities社區 that you see today今天.
65
158658
2603
02:53
Imagine想像 putting everything you have into your mortgage抵押,
66
161261
3181
02:56
it goes underwater水下, and you have to pay工資
67
164442
2073
02:58
twice兩次 as much for all the driving主動 that you're doing.
68
166515
3865
03:02
So we know what it's doneDONE to our society社會
69
170380
2720
03:05
and all the extra額外 work we have to do
70
173100
2331
03:07

What happens發生 when a city decides決定

03:10
it's going to set other priorities優先?
73
178932
2274
03:13
And probably大概 the best最好 example we have here
74
181206
1972
03:15

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
