ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jane McGonigal - Game Designer
Reality is broken, says Jane McGonigal, and we need to make it work more like a game. Her work shows us how.

Why you should listen

Jane McGonigal asks: Why doesn't the real world work more like an online game? In the best-designed games, our human experience is optimized: We have important work to do, we're surrounded by potential collaborators, and we learn quickly and in a low-risk environment. In her work as a game designer, she creates games that use mobile and digital technologies to turn everyday spaces into playing fields, and everyday people into teammates. Her game-world insights can explain--and improve--the way we learn, work, solve problems, and lead our real lives. She served as the director of game R&D at the Institute for the Future, and she is the founder of Gameful, which she describes as "a secret headquarters for worldchanging game developers."

Several years ago she suffered a serious concussion, and she created a multiplayer game to get through it, opening it up to anyone to play. In “Superbetter,” players set a goal (health or wellness) and invite others to play with them--and to keep them on track. While most games, and most videogames, have traditionally been about winning, we are now seeing increasing collaboration and games played together to solve problems.

00:59
this game遊戲 was invented發明 10 years年份 ago
19
47594
2462
01:02
by an artists'藝術家 collective集體 in Austria奧地利 named命名 MonochromMonochrom.
20
50056
3297
01:05
So thank you, MonochromMonochrom.
21
53353
1745
Monochrom
01:07
Okay, so most people are familiar
22
55098
2043
01:11
Sunni遜尼派, let's just remind提醒 them.
24
59133
1588
Sunni,
01:12
One, two, three, four,
I declare宣布 a thumb拇指 war戰爭, and we wrestle搏鬥,
25
60721
2786
01:15
and of course課程 Sunni遜尼派 beats節拍 me
because she's the best最好.
26
63507
2100
01:17
Now the first thing about
01:21
we're the gamer玩家 generation.
28
69411
1411
01:22
There are a billion十億 gamers遊戲玩家 on the planet行星 now,
29
70822
2351
01:25
so we need more of a challenge挑戰.
30
73173
1554
01:26
So the first thing we need is more thumbs
31
74727
3379
01:30
So Eric埃里克, come on over.
32
78106
1694
Eric
01:31
So we could get three thumbs大拇指 together一起,
33
79800
2811
01:34
and Peter彼得 could join加入 us.
34
82611
2458
01:37
We could even have four thumbs大拇指 together一起,
35
85069
1720
01:38
and the way you win贏得
36
86789
1527
01:40
is you're the first person
to pin someone有人 else's別人的 thumb拇指.
37
88316
3197
01:43
This is really important重要. You can't, like,
38
91513
1858
01:45
wait while they fight鬥爭 it out and
then swoop落下 in at the last minute分鐘.
39
93371
2537
01:47
That is not how you win
40
95908
1495
01:49
Ah, who did that? Eric埃里克 you did that.
41
97403
1335
是Eric
01:50
So Eric埃里克 would have won韓元. He was
the first person to pin my thumb拇指.
42
98738
2802
01:53
Okay, so that's the first rule規則,
43
101540
1410
01:54
and we can see that three or four
44
102950
1859
01:56
is kind of the typical典型 number of thumbs大拇指 in a node節點,
45
104809
3179
01:59
but if you feel ambitious有雄心,
you don't have to hold保持 back.
46
107988
2642
02:02
We can really go for it.
47
110630
1365
02:03
So you can see up here.
48
111995
2166
02:06
Now the only other rule規則 you need to remember記得 is,
49
114161
2972
02:09
gamer玩家 generation, we like a challenge挑戰.
50
117133
2267
02:11
I happen發生 to notice注意 you all have
51
119400
1647
02:13
some thumbs大拇指 you're not using運用.
52
121047
1836
02:14
So I think we should kind of get some more involved參與.
53
122883
3007
02:17
And if we had just four people,
54
125890
1770
02:19
we would do it just like this,
55
127660
1838
02:21
and we would try and wrestle搏鬥
56
129498
1686
02:23
both thumbs大拇指 at the same相同 time.
57
131184
1781
02:24
Perfect完善.
58
132965
1307
太好了
02:26
Now, if we had more people in the room房間,
59
134272
2114
02:28
instead代替 of just wrestling摔角 in a closed關閉 node節點,
60
136386
1879
02:30
we might威力 reach達到 out and try
and grab some other people.
61
138265
2783
02:33
And in fact事實, that's what we're going to do right now.
62
141048
1721
02:34
We're going to try and get all, something like,
63
142769
2552
02:37
I don't know, 1,500 thumbs大拇指 in this room房間
64
145321
2976
02:40
connected連接的 in a single node節點.
65
148297
1313
02:41
And we have to connect both levels水平,
66
149610
3040
02:44
so if you're up there, you're going to be
67
152650
2446
02:47
reaching到達 down and reaching到達 up.
68
155096
2213
02:49
Now — (Laughter
69
157309
1674
02:50
before we get started開始 --
70
158983
1892
02:52
This is great. You're excited興奮 to play. —
71
160875
3033
02:55
before we get started開始, can I have
the slides幻燈片 back up here really quick,
72
163908
3080
02:58
because if you get good at this game遊戲,
73
166988
1957
03:00
I want you to know there are some advanced高級 levels水平.
74
168945
2636
03:03
So this is the kind of simple簡單 level水平, right?
75
171581
2912
03:06
But there are advanced高級 configurations配置.
76
174493
1912
03:08
This is called the Death死亡 Star Configuration組態.
77
176405
2010
03:10
Any Star Wars戰爭 fans球迷?
78
178415
1707
03:12
And this one's那些 called the Möbiusbius Strip跳閘.
79
180122
2348
03:14
Any science科學 geeks怪才, you get that one.
80
182470
1820
03:16
This is the hardest最難 level水平. This is the extreme極端.
81
184290
2904
03:19
So we'll stick with the normal正常 one for now,
82
187194
2014
03:21
and I'm going to give you 30 seconds,
83

1942
03:23
