ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rose George - Curious journalist
Rose George looks deeply into topics that are unseen but fundamental, whether that's sewers or latrines or massive container ships or pirate hostages or menstrual hygiene.

Why you should listen

Rose George thinks, researches, writes and talks about the hidden, the undiscussed. Among the everyone-does-it-no-one-talks-about-it issues she's explored in books and articles: sanitation (and poop in general). Diarrhea is a weapon of mass destruction, says the UK-based journalist and author, and a lack of access to toilets is at the root of our biggest public health crisis. In 2012, two out of five of the world’s population had nowhere sanitary to go.

The key to turning around this problem, says George: Let’s drop the pretense of “water-related diseases” and call out the cause of myriad afflictions around the world as what they are -- “poop-related diseases” that are preventable with a basic toilet. George explores the problem in her book The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters and in a fabulous special issue of Colors magazine called "Shit: A Survival Guide." Read a sample chapter of The Big Necessity >>

Her latest book, on an equally hidden world that touches almost everything we do, is Ninety Percent of Everything: Inside Shipping, the Invisible Industry That Puts Clothes on Your Back, Gas in Your Car, Food on Your Plate. Read a review >>

In the UK and elsewhere, you'll find the book titled Deep Sea and Foreign Going: Inside Shipping, the Invisible Industry the Brings You 90% of Everything.

at the age年齡 of 42, 43.
21

01:13
That is how fundamentally
we still depend依靠 on shipping運輸.
22
61996
5319
01:19
Because perhaps也許 the general一般 public上市
23
67315
2345
01:21
thinks of shipping運輸 as an old-fashioned過時 industry行業,
24
69660
3125

01:32
Shipping運輸 is as crucial關鍵 to us as it has ever been.

01:37
Shipping運輸 brings帶來 us 90 percent百分 of world世界 trade貿易.

31

01:49
And yet然而, for such這樣 an enormous巨大 industry行業 --

01:56
it's become成為 pretty漂亮 much invisible無形.
34

02:00
Now that sounds聲音 absurd荒誕 in Singapore新加坡 to say that,
35
108268
4289
02:04
because here shipping運輸 is so present當下
36
112557

02:40

02:52
Now why is this?

04:07
and I learned學到了 a lot about shipping運輸.
83
235542
2747
04:10
And one of the first things that surprised詫異 me
84
238289
1718
04:12
when I got on board Kendal肯德爾
85
240007
2387
04:14
was, where are all the people?
86
242394
2745
04:17
I have friends朋友 in the Navy海軍 who tell me
87
245139
1620
04:18
they sail with 1,000 sailors水手 at a time,
88
246759
3139
04:21
but on Kendal肯德爾 there were only 21 crew船員.
89
249898
3339
04:25
Now that's because shipping運輸 is very efficient高效.
90
253237
2877
04:28
Containerization集裝箱 has made製作 it very efficient高效.
91
256114
3064
04:31
Ships船舶 have automation自動化 now.
92
259178
2094
04:33
They can operate操作 with small crews船員.
93
261272

04:36
But it also means手段 that, in the words
94
264001
1789
04:37
of a port港口 chaplain牧師 I once一旦 met會見,
95
265790
2460
04:40
the average平均 seafarer海員 you're going to find
96
268250
2045
04:42
on a container容器 ship is either tired or exhausted,
97
270295
4139
04:46
because the pace步伐 of modern現代 shipping運輸

04:49
is quite相當 punishing懲罰 for what the shipping運輸 calls電話

04:58
So most seafarers海員 now working加工 on container容器 ships船舶

And another另一個 thing that surprised詫異 me
when I got on board Kendal肯德爾
110
304506

05:19
was who I was sitting坐在 next下一個 to --

05:22
Not the queen女王; I can't imagine想像 why

05:27
But around that dining用餐 table in the officer's長官 saloon轎車,
113

05:30
I was sitting坐在 next下一個 to a Burmese緬甸語 guy,

I was opposite對面 a Romanian羅馬尼亞, a Moldavian摩爾多瓦, an Indian印度人.

and in the crew船員 room房間, it was entirely完全 Filipinos菲律賓人.
117
325675

05:40
So that was a normal正常 working加工 ship.
118
328717

05:43
Now how is that possible可能?
119
331677
2023
05:45
Because the biggest最大 dramatic戲劇性 change更改
120
333700
1892
05:47
in shipping運輸 over the last 60 years年份,
121
335592
1844
05:49
when most of the general一般 public上市 stopped停止 noticing注意到 it,
122
337436
2512
05:51
was something called an open打開 registry註冊處,
123
339948
2619
05:54
or a flag of convenience方便.
124
342567
2805
05:57
Ships船舶 can now fly the flag of any nation國家
125
345372
2587
05:59
that provides提供 a flag registry註冊處.
126
347959
2952
06:02
You can get a flag from the landlocked內陸 nation國家
127
350911
2275
06:05
of Bolivia玻利維亞, or Mongolia蒙古,
128
353186
2124
06:07
or North Korea韓國, though雖然 that's not very popular流行.
129
355310

06:10
(Laughter
130
358285
1423
06:11
So we have these very multinational
131
359708
2111
06:18
And that was a surprise to me.
133
366600
2712
06:21
And when we got to pirate海盜 waters水域,
134
369312
3117
06:24
down the Bab-el-Mandeb曼德海峽 strait海峽
and into the Indian印度人 Ocean海洋,
135
372429
3126
06:27
the ship changed.
136
375555
1752
06:29
And that was also shocking觸目驚心, because suddenly突然,
137
377307
3143
06:32
I realized實現, as the captain隊長 said to me,
138
380450
2214
06:34
that I had been crazy to choose選擇 to go

07:18
And that's because shipping

has very tight margins利潤率,
and they want cheap低廉 fuel汽油,

08:48
And in fact事實, shipping運輸 has a role角色 to play here,
190
516806
2605
08:51
because shipping運輸 noise噪聲 has contributed貢獻
191
519411

so ocean海洋 creatures生物 like whales鯨魚 and dolphins海豚

can transmit發送 across橫過 hundreds數以百計 of miles英里.

09:13
A humpback駝背 can transmit發送 a sound聲音

09:15
across橫過 a whole整個 ocean海洋.

But a supertanker超級油輪 can also be heard聽說

09:21
and because the noise噪聲 that
09:24
is sometimes有時 at the same相同 frequency頻率 that whales鯨魚 use,
204
552475
3337
09:27
then it can damage損傷 their acoustic habitat棲息地,
205
555812
3034
09:30
and they need this for breeding配種,
