01:10
because it seems似乎 as though雖然
we're living活的 in a very small town.
21

01:13
We see the same相同 people

01:15
but that's because
we're not really exploring探索

01:24
and they even identify鑑定 with living活的

3804
01:28
over, say, the Baltimore巴爾的摩 city
01:32
But in the middle中間, you see that there's
29
80990
2100
01:35
something that connects所連接
the two communities社區 together一起,
30
83090
2483
01:37
and that's sports體育.
31
85573
879
01:38
We have the Baltimore巴爾的摩 Orioles金鶯,

01:42
Under Armour盔甲, you may可能 have heard聽說 of,
is a Baltimore巴爾的摩 company公司,
34
90986
2838
01:45
and that community社區 of sports體育
acts行為 as the only bridge
35
93824
2433
01:48
between之間 these two ends結束 of the network網絡.
36
96257
2271
01:50
Let's take a look at San Francisco
01:52
You see something a little bit
01:55
On the one hand, you do have
the media媒體, politics政治 and news新聞 lobe
39
103609
4393
02:00
that tends趨向 to exist存在
in Baltimore巴爾的摩 and other cities城市,
40
108002
2535
02:02
but you also have this
very predominant優越的 group
41
110537
2355
02:04
of geeks怪才 and techies技術人員 that are sort分類 of
taking服用 over the top最佳 half of the network網絡,
42
112892
4393
02:09
and there's even a group
that's so distinct不同 and clear明確
43
117285
2502
02:11
that we can identify鑑定 it
as Twitter推特 employees僱員,
44
119787
2350
02:14
next下一個 to the geeks怪才, in between之間
the gamers遊戲玩家 and the geeks怪才,
45
122137
3367
02:17
at the opposite對面 end結束
of the hip-hop嘻哈 spectrum光譜.
46
125504
2941
02:20
So you can see, though
47
128445
1717
02:22
that the tensions緊張 that we've我們已經
heard聽說 about in San Francisco弗朗西斯科
48
130162
2681
02:24
in terms條款 of people being存在
02:27
and all the new tech高科技 companies公司
that are bringing使 new wealth財富
50
135764
2759
02:30
and settlement沉降 into the city are real真實,
51
138523
2097
02:32
and you can actually其實 see
that documented記錄 here.
52
140620
2229
02:34
You can see the LGBTLGBT community社區
53
142849
2020
02:36
is not really getting得到 along沿
with the geek極客 community社區 that well,
54
144869
3296
02:40
the arts藝術 community社區, the music音樂 community社區.
55
148165
2132
02:42
And so it leads引線 to things like this.
56
150297
1773
02:45
Somebody sent發送 me this photo照片
a few少數 weeks ago,
58
153043
1824
02:46
and it shows節目 what is happening事件
on the ground地面 in San Francisco弗朗西斯科,
59
154867
2907
02:49
and I think you can
actually其實 try to understand理解 that
60
157774
2384
02:52
through通過 looking at a map地圖 like this.
61
160158
1702
02:53
Let's take a look at Rio里約熱內盧 de Janeiro里約熱內盧.
62
161860
1760
02:55
I spent花費 the last few少數 weeks
02:58
and one of the things
that stood站在 out to me about this city
64
166074
2807
03:00
is that everything's一切的
really kind of mixed up.
65
168881
2122
03:03
It's a very heterogenous異質 city in a way
that Baltimore巴爾的摩 or San Francisco弗朗西斯科 is not.
66
171003
4104
03:07
You still have the lobe of people involved參與
67
175107
2455
03:09
with government政府, newspapers報紙,
03:11
TEDxRioTEDxRio is down in the lower降低 right,
right next下一個 to bloggers博客 and writers作家.
69
179946
3404
03:15
But then you also have this
tremendous巨大 diversity多樣 of people
70
183350
2709
03:18
that are interested有興趣
in different不同 kinds of music音樂.
71
186059
2274
are represented代表 here.
72
188333
2204
03:22
Other boy男孩 bands, country國家 singers歌手,
73
190537
2892
and stand-up站起來 comedy喜劇,
74
193429
2908
03:28
and there's even a whole整個 section部分
around drugs毒品 and jokes笑話.
75
196337
3039
03:31
How cool is that?
76
199376
1486
03:32
And then the Flamengo弗拉門戈 football足球 team球隊
is also represented代表 here.
77
200862
3134
03:35
So you have that same相同 kind of spread傳播
78
203996
2160
03:38
of sports體育 and civics公民
and the arts藝術 and music音樂,
79
206156
2715
03:40
but it's represented代表
in a very different不同 way,
80
208871
2161
03:43
and I think that maybe fits適合
with our understanding理解 of Rio里約熱內盧
81
211032
3320
03:46
as being存在 a very multicultural多元文化,
03:50
So we have all this data數據.
83
218366
3618
03:53
It's an incredibly令人難以置信 rich豐富 set of data數據
that we have about cities城市 now,
84
221984
3118
03:57
maybe even richer更豐富 than any data數據 set
that we've我們已經 ever had before.
85
225102
3246
04:00
So what can we do with it?
86
228348
1924
04:02
Well, I think the first thing
that we can try to understand理解
87
230272
2870
04:05
is that segregation隔離 is a social社會 construct構造.
88
233142
2338
04:07
It's something that we choose選擇 to do,
and we could choose選擇 not to do it,
89
235480
3344
04:10
and if you kind of think about it,
90
238824
1932
04:12
what we're doing with this data數據
is aiming瞄準 a space空間 telescope望遠鏡 at a city
91
240756
3411
04:16
and looking at it as if was
04:19
and seeing眼看 how everybody每個人 arranged安排
themselves他們自己 in a seating休息 chart圖表.
93
247199
3738
04:22
Well maybe it's time to shake up
the seating休息 chart圖表 a little bit.
94
250937
3313
04:26
The other thing that we start開始 to realize實現
95
254250
2540
04:28
is that race種族 is a really
04:31
We've我們已經 got people represented代表
from all different不同 types類型 of races比賽
97
259428
2937
04:34
across橫過 the entire整個 map地圖 here --
98
262365
2326
04:36
only looking at race種族
99
264691
2376
04:39
doesn't really contribute有助於 to
our development發展 of diversity多樣.
100
267067
2718
04:41
So if we're trying to use diversity多樣
101
269785
1739
04:43
as a way to tackle滑車 some of our
more intractable棘手 problems問題,
102
271524
3081
04:46
we need to start開始 to think
about diversity多樣 in a new way.
103
274605
3294
04:49
And lastly最後, we have the ability能力 to create創建
104
277899
3527
04:53
interventions干預措施 to start開始 to reshape重塑
our cities城市 in a new way,
105
281426
3094
04:56
and I believe that if
we have that capability能力,
106
284520
2600
04:59
we may可能 even bear some
responsibility責任 to do so.
107
287120
3065
05:02
So what is a city?
108
290185
1765
05:03
I think some might威力 say that it is
109
291950
2206
05:06
a geographical地理 area or a collection採集
of streets街道 and buildings房屋,
110
294156
3160
05:09
but I believe that a city
is the sum of the relationships關係
111
297316
2752
05:12
of the people that live生活 there,
112
300068
1561
05:13
and I believe that if we can start開始 to
document文件 those relationships關係 in a real真實 way
113
301629
6051
05:19
then maybe we have a real真實 shot射擊
114
307680
1733
05:21
at creating創建 those kinds of cities城市
that we'd星期三 like to have.
115
309413
2675
05:24
Thank you.
