ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Helder Guimarães - Magician
Using a deck of cards and other simple props, Helder Guimarães gets up close to play with your perceptions and preconceptions.

Why you should listen

Helder Guimarães slips and slides cards on a table, wowing you with invisible technique, unorthodox psychology and fresh humor. As a close-up magician, he's won international awards for his elegantly thought-through performances, which merge a nuanced stagecraft with good old how-does-he-do-it sleight of hand. He is the world's youngest-ever World Champion of Card Magic. He reflects on his craft in the enigmatic out-of-print book, Reflections.

His appearances at LA's Magic Castle led him to be awarded the title of Parlour Magician of The Year, in 2011 and 2012, recognition that drew hours-long queues as audiences (and fellow magicians) flocked to the simple and astonishing act. Also, in 2012, he co-created a show called Nothing to Hide, with Derek DelGaudio, which opened at the Geffen Playhouse, directed by magic superfan Neil Patrick Harris. In 2013, the show was taken to Off-Broadway where it stayed for a very successful held-over run of 110 performances.

07:58
So you have the giraffe
142

08:06
Sir先生, I'm going to ask you,
144
474838
3023
08:09
do you have, with you,
3: I think so.
146
483197
1638
08:16
HGHG: Yes? You see, a coincidence
147
484835
2638
08:19
(Laughter
148
487473
2704
08:22
Let's make sure you have it.
149
490177
1824
08:24
Do you have it?
150
492001
1290
08:25
3: Yes.
HGHG: Yes! Perfect完善.
151
493291
2274
08:27
Now, I want you to do exactly究竟 the same相同
thing I am about to do.
152
495565
2974
08:30
I have a dollar美元 bill法案 here to explain說明.
153
498539
1791
08:32
I want you to take the dollar美元 bill法案,
154
500330
1739
08:34
and fold the Washington華盛頓 part部分
inside, like this.
155
502069
3530
08:37
So you get this kind of big square廣場, okay?
156
505599
2980
08:40
Now, I want you to take the bill法案
and fold it like this, lengthwise縱向,
157
508579
3956
08:44
so it becomes like a rectangle長方形,
158
512535
1519
08:46
and then again --
really fold it, really crease it --
159
514054
2519
08:48
and when you have it,
160
516573
1484
08:50
please fold the bill法案 again
into a little square廣場 like this
161
518057
3476
08:53
and let me know when you have it.
162
521533
2328
08:56
Do you have it? Perfect完善.
163
524708
1228
好的。
08:57
Now, I'm going to approach
164
525936
2365
09:00
and before we start開始,
165
528301
1499
09:01
I want to make sure that we do this
in very, very serious嚴重 conditions條件.
166
529800
3297
09:05
First of all, I want to ensure確保 that we
have a marker標記 and we have a paper clip.
167
533097
5595
09:10
First of all, take the marker標記
and go ahead and sign標誌 the bill法案.
168
538692
3457
09:14
And this is the reason原因 why:
169
542149
1726
原因是
09:15
later後來, I'm going to be doing
a bunch of stuff東東 on stage階段
170
543875
2631
09:18
and I don't want you to think,
171
546506
1518
09:20
oh, while I was distracted分心 by Helder埃爾德,
172
548024
2455
09:22
someone有人 came來了 onstage在舞台上 and swapped the bill法案.
173
550479
2079
09:24
So I want to make sure
it's exactly究竟 the same相同 bill法案.
174
552558
2475
09:27
Now not only that, I want you
to take the paper clip
175
555033
2499
09:29
and put it around the bill法案.
176
557532
2200
09:31
So even if nobody沒有人 comes onstage在舞台上
and switches開關 the bill法案,
177
559732
2606
09:34
I don't have enough足夠 time
to go open打開 the bill法案 and close it
178
562338
3279
09:37
and see what I don't want to see.
179
565617
1639
09:39
Is that fair公平?
180
567280
1161
09:40
Now you can give me the marker標記 back.
181
568441
1787
09:42
And just like that, very clearly
182
570228
2260
09:44
I want to make sure that
we place地點 this in full充分 view視圖
183
572488

5186
09:52
and to make sure that everyone大家
is going to see it,
185
580693
2481
09:55
we're going to actually其實 have
a camera相機 man onstage在舞台上.
186
583174
3765
09:58
Yes, perfect完善, so that you can see.
187
586939
