ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dean Ornish - Physician, author
Dean Ornish is a clinical professor at UCSF and founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute. He's a leading expert on fighting illness -- particularly heart disease with dietary and lifestyle changes.

Why you should listen

Dr. Dean Ornish wants you to live longer, and have more fun while you're at it. He's one of the leading voices in the medical community promoting a balanced, holistic approach to health, and proving that it works. The author of Eat More, Weigh Less and several other best-selling books, Ornish is best known for his lifestyle-based approach to fighting heart disease.

His research at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute (the nonprofit he founded) clinically demonstrated that cardiovascular illnesses -- and, most recently prostate cancer -- can be treated and even reversed through diet and exercise. These findings (once thought to be physiologically implausible) have been widely chronicled in the US media, including Newsweek, for which Ornish writes a column. The fifty-something physician, who's received many honors and awards, was chosen by LIFE Magazine as one of the most influential members of his generation. Among his many pursuits, Ornish is now working with food corporations to help stop America's obesity pandemic from spreading around the globe.

18
53000
3000

01:50
And it’s really about identifying識別 what’s causing造成 us
34
98000
3000
01:53
to disturb打擾 our innate先天 health健康 and happiness幸福,
35
101000
3000
01:56
and then to allow允許 that natural自然 healing復原 to occur發生.
36
104000
3000
01:59
To me, that’s the real真實 natural自然 wonder奇蹟.
37
107000
2000
02:01
So, within that larger context
38
109000
2000
02:03
we can talk about diet飲食, stress強調 management管理 --
39
111000
3000
02:06
which哪一個 are really these spiritual精神 practices做法 --
40
114000
2000
02:08
moderate中等 exercise行使, smoking抽煙 cessation戒菸, support支持 groups and community社區 --
41
116000
4000
02:12
which哪一個 I’ll talk more about -- and some vitamins維生素 and supplements補品.
42
120000
2000
02:14
And it’s not a diet
43
122000
2000
02:16
You know, when most people think about the diet飲食 I recommend推薦,
44
124000
2000
02:18
they think it’s a really strict嚴格 diet飲食.
45
126000
2000
02:20
For reversing倒車 disease疾病, that’s what it takes,
46
128000
2000
02:22
but if you’re回覆 just trying to be healthy健康, you have a spectrum光譜 of choices選擇.
47
130000
2000
02:24
And to the degree that you can move移動 in a healthy健康 direction方向,
48
132000
3000
02:27
you’re回覆 going to live生活 longer, you’re回覆 going to feel better,
49
135000
2000
02:29
you’re回覆 going to lose失去 weight重量, and so on.
50
137000
2000
02:31
And in our studies學習, what we’ve已經 been able能夠 to do
51
139000
2000
02:33
is to use very expensive昂貴, high-tech高科技, state-of-the-art最先進的 measures措施
52
141000
3000
02:36
to prove證明 how powerful強大 these very simple簡單 and low-tech技術含量低 and low-cost低成本 --
53
144000
4000
02:40
and in many許多 ways方法, ancient -- interventions干預措施, can be.
54
148000
3000
02:43
We first began開始 by looking at heart disease疾病,
55
151000
2000
02:45
and when I began開始 doing this work 26 or 27 years年份 ago,
56
153000
3000
02:48
it was thought that once一旦 you have heart disease疾病 it can only get worse更差.
57
156000
4000
02:52
And what we found發現 was that, instead代替 of getting得到 worse更差 and worse更差,
58
160000
2000
02:54
in many許多 cases it could get better and better,
59
162000
2000
02:56
and much more quickly很快 than people had once一旦 realized實現.
60
164000
3000
02:59
This is a representative代表 patient患者 who at the time was 73 --
61
167000
3000
03:02
totally完全 needed需要 to have a bypass旁路, decided決定 to do this instead代替.
62
170000
3000
03:05
We used quantitative arteriography動脈造影, showing展示 the narrowing變窄.
63
173000
3000
03:08
This is one of the arteries動脈 that feed飼料 the heart, one of the main主要 arteries動脈,
64
176000
3000
03:11
and you can see the narrowing變窄 here.
65
179000
2000
03:13
A year later後來, it’s not as clogged堵塞; normally一般, it goes the other direction方向.
66
181000
3000
03:16
These minor次要 changes變化 in blockages堵塞
67
184000
2000
03:18
caused造成 a 300 percent百分 improvement起色 in blood血液 flow,
68
186000
2000
03:20
and using運用 cardiac心臟的 positron正電子 emission排放 tomography斷層攝影術, or "PET寵物," scans掃描,
69
188000
4000
03:24
blue藍色 and black黑色 is no blood血液 flow, orange橙子 and white白色 is maximal最大.
70
192000
3000
03:27
Huge巨大 differences分歧 can occur發生 without drugs毒品, without surgery手術.
71
195000
4000
03:31
Clinically臨床, he literally按照字面 couldncouldn’t walk步行 across橫過 the street without getting得到 severe嚴重 chest胸部 pain疼痛;
72
199000
4000
03:35
within a month, like most people, was pain-free無痛, and within a year,
73
203000
3000
03:38
climbing攀登 more than 100 floors地板 a day on a Stairmaster的Stairmaster.
74
206000
2000
03:40
This is not unusual異常, and it’s part部分 of what enables使 people
75
208000
3000
03:43
to maintain保持 these kinds of changes變化,
76
211000
2000
03:45
because it makes品牌 such這樣 a big difference區別 in their quality質量 of life.
77
213000
2000
03:47
Overall總體, if you looked看著 at all the arteries動脈 in all the patients耐心,
78
215000
3000
03:50
they got worse更差 and worse更差, from one year to five years年份, in the comparison對照 group.
79
218000
3000
03:53
This is the natural自然 history歷史 of heart disease疾病,
80
221000
2000
03:55
but it’s really not natural自然 because we found發現 it could get better and better,
81
223000
4000
03:59
and much more quickly很快 than people had once一旦 thought.
82
227000
2000
04:01
We also found發現 that the more people change更改, the better they got.
83
229000
3000
04:04
It wasnWASN’t a function功能 of how old or how sick生病 they were --
84
232000
3000
04:07
it was mainly主要 how much they changed,
85
235000
2000
04:09
and the oldest最老的 patients耐心 improved改善 as much as the young年輕 ones那些.
86
237000
2000
04:11
I got this as a Christmas聖誕 card a few少數 years年份 ago
87
239000
2000
04:13
from two of the patients耐心 in one of our programs程式.
88
241000
2000
04:15
The younger更年輕 brother哥哥 is 86, the older舊的 one’s 95;
89
243000
3000
04:18
they wanted to show顯示 me how much more flexible靈活 they were.
90
246000
2000
04:20
And the following以下 year they sent發送 me this one, which哪一個 I thought was kind of funny滑稽.
91
248000
2000
04:22
(Laughter
92
250000
2000
04:24
You just never know.
93
252000
2000
04:26
And what we found發現 was that 99 percent百分 of the patients耐心
94
254000
2000
04:28
start開始 to reverse相反 the progression級數 of their heart disease疾病.
95
256000
3000
04:31
Now I thought, you know, if we just did good science科學,
96
259000
2000
04:33
that would change更改 medical practice實踐. But, that was a little naive幼稚.
97
261000
2000
04:35
It’s important重要, but not enough足夠.
98
263000
2000
04:37
Because we doctors醫生 do what we get paid支付 to do,
99
265000
2000
04:39
and we get trained熟練 to do what we get paid支付 to do,
100
267000
2000
04:41
so if we change更改 insurance保險, then we change更改 medical practice實踐 and medical education教育.
101
269000
4000
04:45
Insurance保險 will cover the bypass旁路, it’ll cover the angioplasty血管成形術;
102
273000
2000
04:47
it won韓元’t, until直到 recently最近, cover diet飲食 and lifestyle生活方式.
103
275000
3000
04:50
So, we began開始 through通過 our nonprofit非營利性 institute's研究所
104
278000
2000
04:52
training訓練 hospitals醫院 around the country國家,
105
280000
2000
04:54
and we found發現 that most people could avoid避免 surgery手術,
106
282000
3000
04:57
and not only was it medically醫療 effective有效, it was also cost成本 effective有效.
107
285000
2000
04:59
And the insurance保險 companies公司 found發現
108
287000
2000
05:01
that they began開始 to save保存 almost幾乎 30,000 dollars美元 per patient患者,
109
289000
3000
05:04
and Medicare醫保 is now in the middle中間 of doing a demonstration示範 project項目
110
292000
3000
05:07
where they’re回覆 paying付款 for 1,800 people to go through通過 the program程序
111
295000
2000
05:09
on the sites網站 that we train培養.
112
297000
2000
05:11
The fortuneteller算命先生 says, "I give smokers吸煙者 a discount折扣
113
299000
2000
05:13
because there’s not as much to tell." (Laughter笑聲)
114
301000
3000
05:16
I like this slide滑動, because it’s a chance機會 to talk about
115
304000
4000
05:20
what really motivates能夠激勵 people to change更改, and what doesn沒有按’t.
116
308000
2000
05:22
And what doesn沒有按’t work is fear恐懼 of dying垂死,
117
310000
2000
05:24
and that’s what’s normally一般 used.
118
312000
2000
05:26
Everybody每個人 who smokes抽煙 knows知道 it’s not good for you,
119
314000
2000
05:28
and still 30 percent百分 of Americans美國人 smoke抽煙 --
120
316000
2000
05:30
80 percent百分 in some parts部分 of the world世界. Why do people do it?
121
318000
3000
05:33
Well, because it helps幫助 them get through通過 the day.
122
321000
2000
05:35
And I’ll talk more about this, but the real真實 epidemic疫情
123
323000
3000
05:38
isnISN’t just heart disease疾病 or obesity肥胖 or smoking抽煙 -- it’s loneliness孤單 and depression蕭條.
124
326000
3000
05:41
As one woman女人 said, "I’ve已經 got 20 friends朋友 in this package of cigarettes香煙,
125
329000
4000

These are not election選舉 returns回報; these are the percentage百分比 of people who are overweight超重.
173
458000

07:53
And if you see from '85 to '86 to '87, '88, '89, '90, '91 --
174
461000
7000
08:00
you get a new category類別, 15 to 20 percent百分; '92, '93, '94, '95, '96, '97 --
175
468000
7000
08:07
you get a new category類別; '98, '99, 2000, and 2001.
176
475000
5000
08:12
Mississippi密西西比州, more than 25 percent百分 of people are overweight超重.
177
480000
4000
08:16
Why is this? Well, this is one way to lose失去 weight重量 that works作品 very well ...
178
484000
3000
08:19
but it doesn沒有按’t last, which哪一個 is the problem問題.
179
487000
2000
08:21
(Laughter
180
489000
2000
08:23
Now, there’s no mystery神秘 in how you lose失去 weight重量;
181
491000
2000
其實如何減肥並沒有什麼神祕;
08:25
you either burn燒傷 more calories卡路里 by exercise行使 or you eat fewer calories卡路里.
182
493000
4000
08:29
Now, one way to eat fewer calories卡路里 is to eat less food餐飲,
183
497000
3000
08:32
which哪一個 is why you can lose失去 weight重量 on any diet飲食 if you eat less food餐飲,
184
500000
2000
08:34
or if you restrict限制 entire整個 categories類別 of foods食品.
185
502000
2000
08:36
But the problem問題 is, you get hungry飢餓, so it’s hard to keep it off.
186
504000
4000
08:40
The other way is to change更改 the type類型 of food餐飲.
187
508000
2000
08:42
And fat脂肪 has nine calories卡路里 per gram公克,
188
510000
2000
08:44
whereas protein蛋白 and carbs碳水化合物 only have four.
189
512000
2000
08:46
So, when you eat less fat脂肪, you eat fewer calories卡路里 without having to eat less food餐飲.
190
514000
4000
08:50
So you can eat the same相同 amount of food餐飲, but you’ll be getting得到 fewer calories卡路里
191
518000
3000
08:53
because the food餐飲 is less dense稠密 in calories卡路里.
192
521000
2000
08:55
And it’s the volume of food餐飲 that affects影響 satiety果腹, rather than the type類型 of food餐飲.
193
523000
4000
08:59
You know, I don不要’t like talking about the Atkins阿特金斯 diet飲食, but I get asked about it every一切 day,
194
527000
2000
09:01
and so I just thought I’d spend a few少數 minutes分鐘 on that.
195
529000
2000
09:03
The myth神話 that you hear about is,
196
531000
2000
09:05
Americans美國人 have been told to eat less fat脂肪,
197
533000
2000
09:07
the percent百分 of calories卡路里 from fat脂肪 is down,
198
535000
2000
09:09
Americans美國人 are fatter than ever, therefore因此 fat脂肪 doesn沒有按’t make you fat脂肪.
199
537000
3000
09:12
It’s a half-truth半真理. Actually其實, Americans美國人 are eating more fat脂肪 than ever,
200
540000
4000
09:16
and even more carbs碳水化合物. And so the percentage百分比 is lower降低,
201
544000
2000
09:18
the actual實際 amount is higher更高, and so the goal目標 is to reduce減少 both.
202
546000
3000
09:21
Dr博士. Atkins阿特金斯 and I debated辯論 each other many許多 times before he died死亡,
203
549000
4000
09:25
and we agreed約定 that Americans美國人 eat too many許多 simple簡單 carbs碳水化合物,
204
553000
2000
09:27
the "bad carbs碳水化合物," and these are things like --
205
555000
2000
「bad carbs」,像
09:29
(Laughter
206
557000
2000
09:31
And you get a double whammy禍不單行:
207
559000
3000
09:34
you get all these calories卡路里 that don不要’t fill you up because you’ve已經 removed去除 the fiber纖維,
208
562000
3000
09:37
and they get absorbed吸收 quickly很快 so your blood血液 sugar zooms縮放 up.
209
565000
3000
09:40
Your pancreas胰腺 makes品牌 insulin胰島素 to bring帶來 it back down, which哪一個 is good.
210
568000
3000
09:43
But insulin胰島素 accelerates加速 the conversion轉變 of calories卡路里 into fat脂肪.
211
571000
3000
09:46
So, the goal目標 is not to go to pork豬肉 rinds外皮 and bacon培根 and sausages香腸 --
212
574000
2000
09:48
these are not health健康 foods食品 --
213
576000
2000
09:50
but to go from "bad carbs碳水化合物" to what are called "good carbs碳水化合物."
214
578000
2000
但由「bad carbs」換成「good carbs」。
09:52
And these are things like whole整個 foods食品, or unrefined carbs碳水化合物:
215
580000
3000
09:55
fruits水果, vegetables蔬菜, whole整個 wheat小麥 flour麵粉, brown棕色 rice白飯, in their natural自然 forms形式, are rich豐富 in fiber纖維.
216
583000
5000
10:00
And the fiber纖維 fills填充 you up before you get too many許多 calories卡路里,
217
588000
3000
10:03
and it slows減緩 the absorption吸收 so you don不要’t get that rapid快速 rise上升 in blood血液 sugar.
218
591000
4000
10:07
So, and you get all the disease-protective疾病防護 substances物質.
219
595000
3000
10:10
It’s not just what you exclude排除 from your diet飲食,
220
598000
2000
10:12
but also what you include包括 that’s protective保護的.
221
600000
2000
10:14
Just as all carbs碳水化合物 are not bad for you, all fats脂肪 are not bad for you. There are good fats脂肪.
222
602000
3000
10:17
And these are predominantly主要 what are called the Omega-ω-3 fatty脂肪 acids.
223
605000
3000
10:20
You find these, for example, in fish oil.
224
608000
2000
10:22
And the bad fats脂肪 are things like trans-fatty反式脂肪 acids and processed處理 food餐飲
225
610000
3000
10:25
and saturated飽和的 fats脂肪, which哪一個 we find in meat.
226
613000
2000
10:27
If you don不要’t remember記得 anything else其他 from this talk,
227
615000
2000
10:29
three grams a day of fish oil can reduce減少 your risk風險 of a heart attack攻擊
228
617000
3000
10:32
and sudden突然 death死亡 by 50 to 80 percent百分.
229
620000
2000
10:34
Three grams a day. They come in one-gram1克 capsules膠囊;
230
622000
2000
10:36
more than that just gives you extra額外 fat脂肪 you don不要’t need.
231
624000
2000
10:38
It also helps幫助 reduce減少 the risk風險 of the most common共同 cancers癌症
232
626000
3000
10:41
like breast乳房, prostate前列腺 and colon結腸 cancer癌症.
233
629000
2000
10:43
Now, the problem問題 with the Atkins阿特金斯 diet飲食,
234
631000
2000
10:45
everybody每個人 knows知道 people who have lost丟失 weight重量 on it,
235
633000
2000
10:47
but you can lose失去 weight重量 on amphetamines安非他明, you know, and fen-phen芬啉.
236
635000
2000
10:49
I mean, there are lots of ways方法 of losing失去 weight重量 that arenAREN’t good for you.
237
637000
3000
10:52
You want to lose失去 weight重量 in a way that enhances提高 your health健康
238
640000
2000
10:54
rather than the one that harms危害 it.
239
642000
2000
10:56
And the problem問題 is that it’s based基於 on this half-truth半真理,
240
644000
2000
10:58
which哪一個 is that Americans美國人 eat too many許多 simple簡單 carbs碳水化合物,
241
646000
3000
11:01
so if you eat fewer simple簡單 carbs碳水化合物 you’re回覆 going to lose失去 weight重量.
242
649000
2000
11:03
You’ll lose失去 even more weight重量 if you go to whole整個 foods食品 and less fat脂肪,
243
651000
3000
11:06
and you’ll enhance提高 your health健康 rather than harming漢寧波 it.
244
654000
2000
11:08
He says, "I’ve已經 got some good news新聞.

663000
3000
11:18
The red is good at the beginning開始, and a year later後來 --
250
666000
2000
11:20
this is from a study研究 doneDONE in a peer-reviewed同行評審 journal日誌 called Angiology血管學 --
251
668000
4000
11:24
there’s more red after a year on a diet飲食 like I would recommend推薦,
252
672000
3000
11:27
there’s less red, less blood血液 flow after a year on an Atkins-type阿特金斯型 diet飲食.
253
675000
3000
11:30
So, yes, you can lose失去 weight重量, but your heart isnISN’t happy快樂.
254
678000
4000
11:34
Now, one of the studies學習 funded資助 by the Atkins阿特金斯 Center中央
255
682000
2000
11:36
found發現 that 70 percent百分 of the people were constipated大便乾燥, 65 percent百分 had bad breath呼吸,
256
684000
4000
11:40
54 percent百分 had headaches頭痛 – this is not a healthy健康 way to eat.
257
688000
4000
11:44
And so, you might威力 start開始 to lose失去 weight重量 and start開始 to attract吸引 people towards you,
258
692000
3000
11:47
but when they get too close it’s going to be a problem問題.
259
695000
2000
11:49
(Laughter
260
697000
2000
11:51
And more seriously認真地, there are case案件 reports報告 now of 16-year-old-歲 girls女孩
261
699000
3000
11:54
who died死亡 after a few少數 weeks on the Atkins阿特金斯 diet飲食 --
262
702000
2000
11:56
of bone disease疾病, kidney disease疾病, and so on.
263
704000
2000
11:58
And that’s how your body身體 excretes排泄物 waste浪費, is through通過 your breath呼吸,
264
706000
2000
12:00
your bowels腸子 and your perspiration.
265
708000
2000
12:02
So when you go on these kinds of diet飲食, they begin開始 to smell bad.
266
710000
3000
12:05
So, an optimal最佳 diet飲食 is low in fat脂肪, low in the bad carbs碳水化合物,
267
713000
4000
12:09
high in the good carbs碳水化合物 and enough足夠 of the good fats脂肪.
268
717000
2000
12:11
And then, again, it’s a spectrum
269
719000
2000
12:13
when you move移動 in this direction方向, you’re回覆 going to lose失去 weight重量,
270
721000
2000
12:15
you’re回覆 going to feel better and you’re回覆 going to gain獲得 health健康.
271
723000
3000
12:18
Now, there are ecological生態 reasons原因 for eating lower降低 on the food餐飲 chain too,
272
726000
3000
12:21
whether是否 it’s the deforestation森林砍伐 of the Amazon亞馬遜, or making製造 more protein蛋白 available可得到,
273
729000
4000
12:25
to the four billion十億 people who live生活 on a dollar美元 a day --
274
733000
3000
12:28
not to mention提到 whatever隨你 ethical合乎道德的 concerns關注 people have.
275
736000
2000
12:30
So, there are lots of reasons原因 for eating this way that go beyond just your health健康.
276
738000
4000
12:34
Now, we’re回覆 about to publish發布 the first study研究
277
742000
2000
12:36
looking at the effects效果 of this program程序 on prostate前列腺 cancer癌症,
278
744000
4000
12:40
and, in collaboration合作 with Sloane-Kettering斯隆 - 凱特林 and with UCSFUCSF.
279
748000
3000
12:43
We took 90 men男人 who had biopsy-proven活檢證實 prostate前列腺 cancer癌症
280
751000
4000
12:47
and who had elected當選, for reasons原因 unrelated無關 to the study研究, not to have surgery手術.
281
755000
3000
12:50
We could randomly隨機 divide劃分 them into two groups,
282
758000
2000
12:52
and then we could have one group
283
760000
2000
12:54
that is a non-intervention不干涉 control控制 group to compare比較 to,
284
762000
2000
12:56
which哪一個 we can’t do with, say, breast乳房 cancer癌症, because everyone大家 gets得到 treated治療.
285
764000
3000
12:59
What we found發現 was that, after a year,
286
767000
2000
13:01
none沒有 of the experimental試驗 group patients耐心
287
769000
2000
13:03
who made製作 these lifestyle生活方式 changes變化 needed需要 treatment治療,
288
771000
2000
13:05
whereas six of the control-group控制組 patients耐心 needed需要 surgery手術 or radiation輻射.
289
773000
3000
13:08
When we looked看著 at their PSAPSA levels水平 -- which哪一個 is a marker標記 for prostate前列腺 cancer癌症 --
290
776000
4000
13:12
they got worse更差 in the control控制 group,
291
780000
2000
13:14
but they actually其實 got better in the experimental試驗 group,
292
782000
2000
13:16
and these differences分歧 were highly高度 significant重大.
293
784000
2000
13:18
And then I wondered想知道: was there any relationship關係
294
786000
2000
13:20
between之間 how much people changed their diet飲食 and lifestyle生活方式 --
295
788000
2000
13:22
whichever任何 group they were in -- and the changes變化 in PSAPSA?
296
790000
2000
13:24
And sure enough足夠, we found發現 a dose-response劑量 - 響應 relationship關係,
297
792000
3000
13:27
just like we found發現 in the arterial動脈 blockages堵塞 in our cardiac心臟的 studies學習.
298
795000
3000
13:30
And in order訂購 for the PSAPSA to go down, they had to make pretty漂亮 big changes變化.
299
798000
3000
13:33
I then wondered想知道, well, maybe they’re回覆 just changing改變 their PSAPSA,
300
801000
3000
13:36
but it’s not really affecting影響 the tumor growth發展.
301
804000
2000
13:38
So we took some of their blood血液 serum血清 and sent發送 it down to UCLA加州大學洛杉磯分校;
302
806000
3000
13:41
they added添加 it to a standard標準 line of prostate前列腺 tumor cells細胞 growing生長 in tissue組織 culture文化,
303
809000
4000
13:45
and it inhibited抑制 the growth發展 seven times more
304
813000
2000
13:47
in the experimental試驗 group than in the control控制 group -- 70 versus 9 percent百分.
305
815000
5000
13:52
And finally最後, I said, I wonder奇蹟 if there’s any relationship關係 between之間
306
820000
2000
13:54
how much people change更改 and how it inhibited抑制 their tumor growth發展,
307
822000
3000
13:57
whichever任何 group they happened發生 to be in.
308
825000
1000
13:58
And this really got me excited興奮 because again,
309
826000
2000
14:00
we found發現 the same相同 pattern模式: the more people change更改,
310
828000
3000
14:03
the more it affected受影響 the growth發展 of their tumors腫瘤.
311
831000
3000
14:06
And finally最後, we did MRIMRI and MR先生 spectroscopy光譜 scans掃描 on some of these patients耐心,
312
834000
3000
14:09
and the tumor activity活動 is shown顯示 in red in this patient患者,
313
837000
2000
14:11
and you can see clearly明確地 it’s better a year later後來, along沿 with the PSAPSA going down.
314
839000
4000
14:15
So, if it’s true真正 for prostate前列腺 cancer癌症, it’ll almost幾乎 certainly當然 be true真正 for breast乳房 cancer癌症 as well.
315
843000
4000
14:19
And whether是否 or not you have conventional常規 treatment治療,
316
847000
2000
14:21
in addition加成, if you make these changes變化, it may可能 help reduce減少 the risk風險 of recurrence循環.
317
849000
4000
14:25
The last thing I want to talk about, apropos恰好的 of the issue問題 of the pursuit追求 of happiness幸福,
318
853000
4000
14:29
is that study研究 after study研究 have shown顯示
319
857000
2000
14:31
that people who are lonely孤獨 and depressed鬱悶 --
320
859000
2000
14:33
and depression蕭條 is the other real真實 epidemic疫情 in our culture文化 --
321
861000
3000
14:36
are many許多 times more likely容易 to get sick生病 and die prematurely過早,
322
864000
3000
14:39
in part部分 because, as we talked about, they’re回覆 more likely容易 to smoke抽煙
323
867000
3000
14:42
and overeat吃得過多 and drink too much and work too hard and so on.
324
870000
3000
14:45
But also, through通過 mechanisms機制 that we don不要’t fully充分 understand理解,
325
873000
3000
14:48
people who are lonely孤獨 and depressed鬱悶 are many許多 times --
326
876000
2000
14:50
three to five to ten times, in some studies學習 --
327
878000
2000
14:52
more likely容易 to get sick生病 and die prematurely過早.
328
880000
2000
14:54
And depression蕭條 is treatable可治療. We need to do something about that.
329
882000
3000
14:57
Now, on the other hand, anything that promotes促進 intimacy親密關係 is healing復原.
330
885000
3000
15:00
It can be sexual有性 intimacy親密關係
331
888000
2000
15:02
I happen發生 to think that healing復原 energy能源 and erotic好色之徒 energy能源
332
890000
2000
15:04
are just different不同 forms形式 of the same相同 thing.
333
892000
2000
15:06
Friendship友誼, altruism利他主義, compassion同情, service服務 – all the perennial多年生 truths真理 that we talked about
334
894000
5000
15:11
that are part部分 of all religion宗教 and all cultures文化 --
335
899000
2000
15:13
once一旦 you stop trying to see the differences分歧,
336
901000
3000
15:16
these are the things in our own擁有 self-interest自我利益,
337
904000
2000
15:18
because they free自由 us from our suffering痛苦 and from disease疾病.
338
906000
4000
15:22
And it’s in a sense the most selfish自私 thing that we can do.
339
910000
4000
15:26
Just take a look at one study研究. This was doneDONE by David大衛 Spiegel明鏡 at Stanford斯坦福.
340
914000
3000
15:29
He took women婦女 with metastatic轉移性 breast乳房 cancer癌症,
341
917000
2000
15:31
randomly隨機 divided分為 them into two groups.
342
919000
2000
15:33
One group of people just met會見 for an hour-and-a-half一個半小時 once一旦 a week in a support支持 group.
343
921000
3000
15:36
It was a nurturing培育, loving愛心 environment環境,
344
924000
2000
15:38
where they were encouraged鼓勵 to let down their emotional情緒化 defenses防禦
345
926000
2000
15:40
and talk about how awful可怕 it is to have breast乳房 cancer癌症
346
928000
2000
15:42
with people who understood了解, because they were going through通過 it too.
347
930000
2000
15:44
They just met會見 once一旦 a week for a year.
348
932000
2000
15:46
Five years年份 later後來, those women婦女 lived生活 twice兩次 as long, and you can see that the people --
349
934000
4000
15:50
and that was the only difference區別 between之間 the groups.
350
938000
2000
15:52
It was a randomized隨機 control控制 study研究 published發表 in The Lancet柳葉刀.
351
940000
2000
15:54
Other studies學習 have shown顯示 this as well.
352
942000
3000
15:57
So, these simple簡單 things that create創建 intimacy親密關係 are really healing復原,
353
945000
2000
15:59
and even the word healing復原, it comes from the root "to make whole整個."
354
947000
3000
16:02
The word yoga瑜伽 comes from the Sanskrit梵文,
355
950000
2000
16:04
meaning含義 "union聯盟, to yoke, to bring帶來 together一起."
356
952000
3000
16:07
And the last slide滑動 I want to show顯示 you is from -- I was -- again,

this swami斯瓦米 that I studied研究 with for so many許多 years年份, and I

16:12
did a combined結合 oncology腫瘤科 and cardiology心髒病 Grand盛大 Rounds大紅大紫
359
960000

16:15
at the University大學 of Virginia弗吉尼亞州 medical school學校 a couple一對 of years年份 ago.
360
963000
2000
16:17
And at the end結束 of it, somebody said,
361

16:19
"Hey, Swami斯瓦米, what’s the difference區別 between之間 wellness健康 and illness疾病?"
362

16:23
And so he went up on the board and he wrote the word "illness疾病,"

16:25
and circled盤旋 the first letter, and then wrote the word "wellness健康,"
364

3000
16:28
and circled盤旋 the first two letters ...
365

16:30
To me, it’s just shorthand速記 for what we’re回覆 talking about:
366
978000

16:32
that anything that creates創建 a sense of connection連接
