ABOUT THE SPEAKER
JR - Street artist
With a camera, a dedicated wheatpasting crew and the help of whole villages and favelas, 2011 TED Prize winner JR shows the world its true face.

Why you should listen

Working anonymously, pasting his giant images on buildings, trains and bridges, the often-guerrilla artist JR forces us to see each other. Traveling to distant, often dangerous places -- the slums of Kenya, the favelas of Brazil -- he infiltrates communities, befriending inhabitants and recruiting them as models and collaborators. He gets in his subjects’ faces with a 28mm wide-angle lens, resulting in portraits that are unguarded, funny, soulful, real, that capture the sprits of individuals who normally go unseen. The blown-up images pasted on urban surfaces -– the sides of buses, on rooftops -- confront and engage audiences where they least expect it. Images of Parisian thugs are pasted up in bourgeois neighborhoods; photos of Israelis and Palestinians are posted together on both sides of the walls that separate them.

JR's gained widespread attention for his project, "Women Are Heroes," which depicted women "dealing with the effects of war, poverty, violence, and oppression” from Rio de Janeiro, Phnom Penh and Delhi to several cities in Africa. His TED Prize wish opened an even wider lens on the world. With the prize, he launched INSIDE OUT -- a global participatory art project. INSIDE OUT invites everyone to share their portrait and transform messages of personal identity into public art.

“到時我張相有幾大架?”
06:56
"It will be as big as your house房子."
148
401000
3000
06:59
When we did the wall, we did the Palestinian巴勒斯坦 side一邊.
149
404000
3000
07:02
So we arrived with just our ladders
150
407000
2000
07:04
and we realized實現 that they were not high enough.
151
409000
2000
07:06
And so Palestinians巴勒斯坦 guys say,
152
411000
2000
07:08
"Calm平靜 down. No wait. I'm going to find you a solution解決方案."
153
413000
3000
“唔好心急,等陣。我幫你搞掂佢”
07:11
So he went to the Church教堂 of Nativity誕生
154
416000
3000
07:14
and brought back an old ladder
155
419000
2000
07:16
that was so old that it could have seen看到 Jesus耶穌 being born出生.
156
421000
3000
07:19
(Laughter
157
424000
2000
07:21
We did Face塊面 2 Face塊面 with only six friends朋友,
158
426000
3000
07:24
two ladders, two brushes,
159
429000
3000
07:27
a rented car架車, a camera相機
160
432000
2000
07:29
and 20,000 square廣場 feet隻腳 of paper.
161
434000
3000
07:32
We had all sorts各種 of help
162
437000
2000
07:34
from all walks of life.
163
439000
3000
07:39
Okay, for example例子, that's Palestine巴勒斯坦.
164
444000
2000
07:41
We're in Ramallah拉马拉 right now.
165
446000
2000
07:43
We're pasting粘貼 portraits肖像 --
166
448000
2000
07:45
so both portraits肖像 in the streets街道 in a crowded market市場.
167
450000
2000
07:47
People come around us and start初時 asking問吓,
168
452000
3000
07:50
"What are you doing here?"
169
455000
2000
07:52
"Oh, we're actually講真 doing an art藝術 project項目
170
457000
2000
“哦,我哋搞緊藝術呀
07:54
and we are pasting粘貼 an Israeli以色列 and a Palestinian巴勒斯坦 doing the same相同 job工作.
171
459000
3000
07:57
And those ones are actually講真 two taxi-drivers的司機."
172
462000
3000
08:00
And then there was always a silence
173
465000
3000
08:03
"You mean you're pasting粘貼 an Israeli以色列 face塊面 --
174
468000
3000
“你嘅意思系你系度 --
08:06
doing a face塊面 -- right here?"
175
471000
2000
08:08
"Well, yeah, yeah, that's part部分 of the project項目."
176
473000
3000
“哦,系呀,系呀,系呢個藝術嘅一部分黎架。”
08:11
And I would always leave離開 that moment時刻,
177
476000
2000
08:13
and we would ask問吓 them,
178
478000
2000
08:15
"So can you tell me who is who?"
179
480000
3000
“你可唔可以話我聽邊個打邊個呀?”
08:18
And most of them couldn't唔可以 say.
180
483000
2000
08:20
(Applause
181
485000
6000
08:26
We even pasted粘貼 on Israeli以色列 military軍事 towers,
182
491000
3000
08:29
and nothing happened發生.
183
494000
2000
08:31
When you paste粘貼 an image圖像, it's just paper and glue.
184
496000
3000
08:34
People can tear撕裂 it, tag標記 on it, or even pee尿 on it --
185
499000
3000
08:37
some are a bit high for that, I agree同意 --
186
502000
2000
08:39
but the people in the street,
187
504000
2000
08:41
they are the curator館長.
188
506000
2000
08:43
The rain and the wind will take them off anyway反正.
189
508000
2000
08:45
They are not meant意味着 to stay.
190
510000
2000
08:47
But exactly完全 four years after,
191
512000
3000
08:50
the photos, most of them are still there.
192
515000
3000
08:55
that what we thought impossible冇可能 was possible可能 --
194
520000
3000
08:58
and, you know what, even easy容易.
195
523000
2000
09:00
We didn't push the limit限制;
196
525000
2000
09:02
we just showed表明 that they were further進一步 than anyone任何人 thought.
197
527000
3000
09:07
In the Middle中間 East, I experienced經歷 my work
198
532000
2000
09:09
in places地方 without [many好多] museums博物館.
199
534000
2000
09:11
So the reactions反應 in the street
200
536000
3000
09:14
were kind一種 of interesting有趣.
201
539000
2000
09:16
So I decided決定 to go further進一步 in this direction方向
202
541000
2000
09:18
and go in places地方 where there were zero museums博物館.
203
543000
4000
09:24
When you go in these developing發展 societies社會,
204
549000
3000
09:27
women婦女 are the pillars支柱 of their佢哋 community社區,
205
552000
3000
09:30
but the men男人 are still the ones holding舉行 the streets街道.
206
555000
3000
09:33
So we were inspired啟發 to create創建 a project項目
207
558000
3000
09:36
where men男人 will pay支付 tribute致敬 to women婦女
208
561000
3000
09:39
by posting張貼 their佢哋 photos.
209
564000
3000
09:42
I called that project項目 Women婦女 Are Heroes英雄.
210
567000
4000
09:46
When I listened to all the stories故事
211
571000
2000
09:48
everywhere周圍 I went on the continents大洲,
212
573000
2000
09:50
I couldn't唔可以 always understand理解
213
575000
2000
09:52
the complicated複雜 circumstances情況下 of their佢哋 conflict衝突.
214
577000
3000
09:55
I just observed
215
580000
3000
09:58
Sometimes有時 there was no words的話,
216
583000
3000
10:01
no sentence句子, just tears眼淚.
217
586000
3000
10:04
I just took their佢哋 pictures圖片
218
589000
3000
10:07
and pasted粘貼 them.
219
592000
3000
10:11
Women婦女 Are Heroes英雄 took me around the world世界.
220
596000
3000
10:14
Most of the places地方 I went to,
221
599000
2000
10:16
I decided決定 to go there
222
601000
2000
10:18
because I've heard聽到 about it through透過 the media媒體.
223
603000
2000
10:20
So for example例子, in June六月 2008,
224
605000
2000
10:22
I was watching TV電視 in Paris巴黎,
225
607000
2000
10:24
and then I heard聽到 about this terrible可怕 thing
226
609000
2000
10:26
that happened發生 in Rio力拓 de Janeiro里約熱內盧 --
227
611000
2000
10:28
the first favela貧民窟 of Brazil巴西 named Providencia普罗维登西亚.
228
613000
4000
Providencia
10:32
Three kids孩子 -- that was three students學生 --
229
617000
3000
10:35
were [detained拘留] by the army軍隊
230
620000
2000
10:37
because they were not carrying承載 their佢哋 papers文件.
231
622000
2000
10:39
And the army軍隊 took them,
232
624000
2000
10:41
and instead相反 of bringing them to the police警方 station,
233
626000
3000
10:44
they brought them to an enemy敵人 favela貧民窟
234
629000
3000
10:47
where they get chopped切碎 into pieces.
235
632000
2000
10:49
I was shocked
236
634000
2000
10:51
All Brazil巴西 was shocked震驚.
237
636000
2000
10:53
I heard聽到 it was one of the most violent暴力 favelas貧民窟,
238
638000
3000
10:56
because the largest最大 drug藥物 cartel卡特爾 controls控制 it.
239
641000
3000
10:59
So I decided決定 to go there.
240
644000
2000
11:01
When I arrived --
241
646000
2000
11:03
I mean, I didn't have any contact聯繫 with any NGONgo.
242
648000
3000
11:06
There was none in place地方 -- no association協會, no NGOsNgo, nothing --
243
651000
3000
11:09
no eyewitnesses目擊者.
244
654000
2000
11:11
So we just walked around,
245
656000
2000
11:13
and we met遇到 a woman女人,
246
658000
2000
11:15
and I showed表明 her my book.
247
660000
2000
11:17
And she said, "You know what?
248
662000
2000
11:19
We're hungry肚餓 for culture文化.
249
664000
2000
11:21
We need culture文化 out there."
250
666000
3000
11:24
So I went out and I started初時 with the kids孩子.
251
669000
3000
11:27
I just took a few幾個 photos of the kids孩子,
252
672000
2000
11:29
and the next day I came with the posters海報 and we pasted粘貼 them.
253
674000
3000
11:32
The day after, I came back and they were already scratched
254
677000
3000
11:35
But that's okay.
255
680000
2000
11:37
I wanted them to feel that this art藝術 belongs to them.
256
682000
3000
11:41
Then the next day, I held舉行 a meeting on the main主要 square廣場
257
686000
3000
11:44
and some women婦女 came.
258
689000
2000
11:46
They were all linked聯繫 to the three kids孩子 that got killed.
259
691000
4000
11:51
There was the mother母親, the grandmother祖母, the best最好 friend朋友 --
260
696000
3000
11:54
they all wanted to shout the story故事.
261
699000
3000
11:58
After that day,
262
703000
2000
12:00
everyone個個都 in the favela貧民窟 gave me the green綠色 light.
263
705000
3000
12:03
I took more photos, and we started初時 the project項目.
264
708000
3000
12:06
The drug藥物 lords领主 were kind一種 of worried
265
711000
2000
12:08
about us filming拍攝 in the place地方,
266
713000
2000
12:10
so I told them, "You know what?
267
715000
2000
12:12
I'm not interested興趣 in filming拍攝 the violence暴力 and the weapons武器.
268
717000
2000
12:14
You see that enough in the media
269
719000
2000
12:16
What I want to show顯示 is the incredible不可思議 life and energy能源.
270
721000
2000
12:18
I've been seeing看到 it around me the last few幾個 days."
271
723000
3000
12:22
So that's a really symbolic符號 pasting粘貼,
272
727000
2000
12:24
because that's the first one we did that you couldn't唔可以 see from the city城市.
273
729000
3000
12:27
And that's where the three kids孩子 got arrested逮捕,
274
732000
3000
12:30
and that's the grandmother祖母 of one of them.
275
735000
3000
12:33
And on that stairs
276
738000
2000
12:35
that's where the traffickers毒販 always stand
277
740000
2000
12:37
and there's a lot of exchange交換 of fire.
278
742000
2000
12:39
Everyone個個都 there understood理解 the project項目.
279
744000
3000
12:43
And then we pasted粘貼 everywhere周圍 -- the whole整個 hill.
280
748000
3000
12:46
(Applause
281
751000
10000
12:56
What was interesting有趣 is that the media媒體 couldn't唔可以 get in.
282
761000
2000
12:58
I mean, you should see that.
283
763000
2000
13:00
They would have to film電影 us from a really long distance距離 by helicopter直升機
284
765000
3000
13:03
and then have a really long lens鏡頭,
285
768000
2000
13:05
and we would see ourselves自己, on TV電視, pasting粘貼.
286
770000
2000
13:07
And they would put a number數量: "Please call this number數量
287
772000
2000
13:09
if you know what's going on in Providencia普罗维登西亚."
288
774000
2000
13:11
We just did a project項目 and then left
289
776000
3000
13:14
so the media媒體 wouldn't唔會 know.
290
779000
2000
13:16
So how can we know about the project項目?
291
781000
2000
13:18
So they had to go and find the women婦女
292
783000
3000
13:21
and get an explanation解釋 from them.
293
786000
2000
13:23
So you create創建 a bridge between之間 the media媒體
294
788000
3000
13:26
and the anonymous匿名 women婦女.
295

14:04
"You know, you've been here for a few幾個 hours小時

14:17
I think it's people's人民 curiosity好奇心
316
842000
3000
14:20
that motivates激勵 them
317
845000
3000
14:23
to come into the projects項目.
318
848000
2000
14:25
And then it becomes成為 more.
319
850000
2000
14:27
It becomes成為 a desire欲望, a need, an armor裝甲.
320
852000
3000
14:31
On this bridge that's in Monrovia

14:37
of a woman女人 that might可能 have been raped強姦 during the war戰爭.
323
862000
3000
14:40
Women婦女 are always the first ones targeted目標
324
865000
2000
14:42

14:45
This is Kibera基贝拉, Kenya肯雅,

You might可能 have seen看到 images圖像 about the post-election選舉後 violence暴力

14:53
that happened發生 there in 2008.
329
878000
3000
14:57
This time we covered覆蓋 the roofs屋頂 of the houses房子,
330
882000
2000
14:59
but we didn't use paper,
331
884000
3000
15:02
because paper doesn't prevent防止 the rain
332
887000
3000
15:05
from leaking洩漏 inside the house房子 --
333
890000
2000
15:07
vinyl乙烯 does.
334
892000
2000
15:09
Then art藝術 becomes成為 useful有用.
335
894000
2000
15:11
So the people kept保持 it.
336
896000
2000
15:13
You know what I love is, for example例子, when you see the biggest最大 eye眼睛 there,
337
898000
3000
15:16
there are so [many好多] houses房子 inside.
338
901000
2000
15:18
And I went there a few幾個 months ago --
339
903000
2000
15:20
photos are still there -- and it was missing失蹤 a piece一塊 of the eye眼睛.
340
905000
3000
15:23
So I asked問吓 the people what happened發生.
341
908000
2000
15:25
"Oh, that guy just moved."
342
910000
2000
“哦,果個人搬左屋呀。”
15:27
(Laughter
343
912000
4000
15:31
When the roofs屋頂 were covered覆蓋, a woman女人 said as a joke笑話,
344
916000
3000
15:34
"Now God can see me."
345
919000
2000
15:36
When you look at Kibera基贝拉 now,
346
921000
2000
15:38
they look back.
347
923000
2000
15:44
Okay, India印度.
348
929000
2000
15:46
Before I start初時 that, just so you know,
349
931000
2000
15:48
each每個 time we go to a place地方, we don't have authorization授權,
350
933000
2000
15:50
so we set設置 up like commandos突擊隊 --
351
935000
2000
15:52
we're a group of friends朋友 who arrive到達 there,
352
937000
2000
15:54
and we try to paste粘貼 on the walls.
353
939000
2000
15:56
But there are places地方 where you just can't paste粘貼 on a wall.
354
941000
3000
15:59
In India印度 it was just impossible冇可能 to paste粘貼.
355
944000
3000
16:02
I heard聽到 culturally文化 and because of the law法律,
356
947000
3000
16:05
they would just arrest逮捕 us at the first pasting粘貼.
357
950000
3000
16:08
So we decided決定 to paste粘貼 white白色,
358
953000
2000
16:10
white白色 on the walls.
359
955000
2000
16:12
So imagine想象 white白色 guys pasting粘貼 white白色 papers文件.
360
957000
2000
16:14
So people would come to us and ask問吓 us,
361
959000
2000
16:16
"Hey, what are you up to?"
362
961000
2000
“喂,你哋搞緊咩呀?”
16:18
"Oh, you know, we're just doing art藝術." "Art藝術?"
363
963000
3000
“哦,無野,搞緊藝術。” “藝術?”
16:22
Of course課程, they were confused困惑.
364
967000
2000
16:24
But you know how India印度 has a lot of dust in the streets街道,
365
969000
3000
16:27
and the more dust you would have
366
972000
2000
16:29
going up in the air空氣,
367
974000
2000
16:31
on the white白色 paper you can almost爭 D see,
368
976000
3000
16:34
but there is this sticky part部分
369
979000
2000
16:36
like when you reverse反向 a sticker貼紙.
370
981000
2000
16:38
So the more dust you have, the more it will reveal揭示 the photo.
371
983000
3000
16:41
So we could just walk in the street during the next days
372
986000
3000
16:44
and the photos would get revealed透露 by themselves自己.
373
989000
2000
16:46
(Applause
374
991000
7000
16:53
Thank you.
375
998000
2000
16:56
So we didn't get caught抓住 this time.
376
1001000
2000
17:01
Each每個 project項目 -- that's a film電影
377
1006000
2000
17:03
from Women婦女 Are Heroes英雄.
378
1008000
3000
17:06
(Music
379
1011000
3000
17:09
Okay.
380
1014000
2000
(好)
17:11
For each每個 project項目 we do
381
1016000
2000
17:13
a film電影.
382
1018000
2000
17:15
And most of what you see -- that's a trailer拖車 from "Women婦女 Are Heroes英雄" --
383
1020000
3000
17:18
its images圖像, photography攝影,
384
1023000
3000
17:21
taken採取 one after the other.
385
1026000
3000
17:42
And the photos kept保持 traveling旅行 even without us.
386
1047000
3000
18:21
(Laughter
387
1086000
2000
18:23
(Applause
388
1088000
10000
18:33
Hopefully希望, you'll你咪會 see the film電影,
389
1098000
2000
18:35
and you'll你咪會 understand理解 the scope範圍 of the project項目
390
1100000
2000
18:37
and what the people felt覺得 when they saw those photos.
391
1102000
2000
18:39
Because that's a big part部分 of it. There's layers behind背後 each每個 photo.
392
1104000
3000
18:42
Behind背後 each每個 image圖像 is a story故事.
393
1107000
3000
18:45
Women婦女 Are Heroes英雄 created創建 a new新增功能 dynamic動態
394
1110000
2000
18:47
in each每個 of the communities社區,
395
1112000
2000
18:49
and the women婦女 kept保持 that dynamic動態 after we left.
396
1114000
3000
18:52
For example例子, we did books -- not for sale銷售 --
397
1117000
3000
18:55
that all the community社區 would get.
398
1120000
2000
18:57
But to get it, they would have to [get] it signed簽署 by one of the women婦女.
399
1122000
4000
19:01
We did that in most of the places地方.
400
1126000
2000
19:03
We go back regularly定期.
401
1128000
2000
19:05
And so in Providencia普罗维登西亚, for example例子, in the favela貧民窟,
402
1130000
3000
19:08
we have a cultural文化 center中心 running運行 there.
403
1133000
2000
19:10
In Kibera基贝拉, each每個 year we cover覆蓋 more roofs屋頂.
404
1135000
2000
19:12
Because of course課程, when we left, the people who were just at the edge邊緣 of the project項目
405
1137000
3000
19:15
said, "Hey, what about my roof屋頂?"
406
1140000
3000
19:18
So we decided決定 to come the year after
407
1143000
2000
19:20
and keep doing the project項目.
408
1145000
3000
19:23
A really important重要 pointD for me
409
1148000
2000
19:25
is that I don't use any brand品牌 or corporate企業 sponsors贊助商.
410
1150000
3000
19:28
So I have no responsibility責任
411
1153000
2000
19:30
to anyone任何人 but myself自己
412
1155000
2000
19:32
and the subjects科目.
413
1157000
2000
19:34
(Applause
414
1159000
4000
19:38
And that is for me
415
1163000
2000
19:40
one of the more important重要 things in the work.
416
1165000
2000
19:42
I think, today今日,
417
1167000
2000
19:44
as important重要 as the result結果 is the way you do things.
418
1169000
3000
19:47
And that has always been a central中央 part部分 of the work.
419
1172000
3000
19:51
And what's interesting有趣 is that fine line that I have
420
1176000
2000
19:53
with images圖像 and advertising廣告.
421
1178000
2000
19:55
We just did some pasting粘貼 in Los洛杉磯 Angeles洛杉磯
422
1180000
2000
19:57
on another另一個 project項目 in the last weeks禮拜.
423
1182000
3000
20:00
And I was even invited邀請 to cover覆蓋 the MOCAMOCA museum博物館.
424
1185000
4000
20:04
But yesterday琴日 the city城市 called them and said,
425
1189000
2000
20:06
"Look, you're going to have to tear撕裂 it down.
426
1191000
2000
“睇黎,我哋要將佢地搣左佢。
20:08
Because this can be taken採取 for advertising廣告,
427
1193000
2000
20:10
and because of the law法律,
428
1195000
2000
20:12
it has to be taken採取 down."
429
1197000
2000
20:14
But tell me, advertising廣告 for what?
430
1199000
3000
20:17
The people I photograph
431
1202000
2000
20:19
were proud驕傲 to participate參與 in the project項目
432
1204000
2000
20:21
and to have their佢哋 photo in the community社區.
433
1206000
2000
20:23
But they asked問吓 me for a promise承諾 basically基本上.
434
1208000
2000
20:25
They asked問吓 me, "Please, make our story故事 travel旅行 with you."
435
1210000
4000
20:29
So I did. That's Paris
436
1214000
3000
20:32
That's Rio
437
1217000
2000
20:34
In each每個 place地方, we built建立 exhibitions展覽 with a story故事, and the story故事 traveled旅行.
438
1219000
4000
20:38
You understand理解 the full scope範圍 of the project項目.
439
1223000
2000
20:40
That's London
440
1225000
3000
441
1228000
2000
20:45
And today今日, they are with you in Long Beach海灘.
