3000

The dinosaurs恐龍 had a really bad day.

01:05
Okay?
20
50000
2000
01:07
Now, a six-mile-wide六英里寬 rock岩石 is very large.
21
52000
2000

We all live here in Boulder

If you look out your window窗口 and you can see

01:13
Long's生嘅 Peak峰值, you're probably可能 familiar熟悉 with it.
24
58000
2000
01:15
Now, scoop up Long's生嘅 Peak峰值, and put it out
25
60000
2000
01:17
in space空間.
26
62000
2000
01:19
Take Meeker米克尔, MtMt. Meeker米克尔. Lump腫塊 that in there,
27

2000
01:21
and put that in space空間 as well,
28

01:23
and MtMt.

and the Indian印度 peaks.

01:27
Then you're starting初時 to get an idea想法 of

2000
01:29
how much rock岩石 we're talking講嘢 about, okay?
32
74000
2000
01:31
We know it was that big because of
33

01:33
the impact影響 it had and the crater火山口 it left.

02:16
Some of them are smaller.
53
121000
2000
02:18
Here is one that came in
54
123000
3000
02:21
over the United聯合 States國家
55
126000
2000
02:23
in October十月 of 1992.
56
128000
2000
02:25
It came in on a Friday星期五 night.
57
130000
2000
02:27
Why is that important重要?
58
132000
2000
02:29
Because back then, video視頻 cameras相機 were
59
134000
2000
02:31
just starting初時 to become成為 popular流行, and people
60

And since因為 this came in on a Friday星期五,
63
142000
3000
02:40
they were able to get this great footage鏡頭
64
145000
2000
02:42
of this thing breaking打破 up as it came in
65
147000
2000

02:48
to a car架車 in New新增功能 York約克.
68
153000
2000
02:50
(Laughter
69
155000
2000
02:52
Now, this is not a 200-mile-wide英里寬 crater火山口,
70
157000
3000
02:55
but then again you can see the rock岩石
71
160000
2000
02:57
which is sitting right here,
72
162000
2000
02:59
about the size大小 of a football足球, that hit
73
164000
2000
03:01
that car架車 and did that damage損傷.
74
166000
2000
03:03
Now this thing was probably可能 about the size大小
75
168000
2000
03:05
of a school學校 bus縂綫 when it first came in.
76
170000
2000
03:07
It broke打破 up through透過 atmospheric大氣 pressure壓力,
77
172000
2000
03:09
it crumbled崩潰, and then the pieces fell下跌 apart分開
78
174000
2000
03:11
and did some damage損傷.
79
176000
2000
03:13
Now, you wouldn't唔會 want that falling下降 on your foot隻腳
80
178000
2000
03:15
or your head, because it would do that to it.
81
180000
2000
03:17
That would be bad.
82
182000
2000
03:19
But it won't唔會 wipe out, you know, all life
83
184000
2000
03:21
on Earth地球, so that's fine. But it turns輪流 out,
84
186000
2000
03:23
you don't need something six miles英里 across
85
188000
3000
03:26
to do a lot of damage損傷.
86
191000
2000
03:28
There is a median平均 pointD between之間 tiny rock岩石
87
193000
2000
03:30
and gigantic巨大 rock岩石, and in fact事實, if any of you
88
195000
2000
03:32
have ever been to near附近 Winslow温斯洛, Arizona亞利桑那州,
89
197000
3000
03:35
there is a crater火山口 in the desert沙漠 there that is
90
200000
3000
03:38
so iconic標誌 that it is actually講真 called Meteor流星 Crater火山口.
91
203000
4000
03:42
To give you a sense of scale規模, this is about a mile英里 wide.
92
207000
3000
03:45
If you look up at the top返回頁首, that's a parking停車 lot,
93
210000
3000
03:48
and those are recreational娛樂 vehicles車輛 right there.
94
213000
3000
03:51
So it's about a mile英里 across, 600 feet隻腳 deep.
95
216000
3000
03:54
The object對象 that formed形成 this was probably可能 about
96
219000
3000
03:57
30 to 50 yards across, so roughly大約 the size大小
97
222000
3000
04:00
of Mackey麦基 Auditorium禮堂 here.
98
225000
3000
04:03
It came in at speeds速度 that were tremendous巨大,

04:06
slammed抨擊 into the ground地面, blew up,
100
231000
2000
04:08
and exploded爆炸 with the energy能源 of roughly大約
101
233000
2000
102
235000
2000
04:12
a very hefty大幅 bomb炸彈.
103
237000
2000
04:14
This was 50,000 years ago, so it may可能 have
104
239000
2000
04:16
wiped out a few幾個 buffalo水牛 or antelope羚羊,
105
241000
2000
04:18
or something like that out in the desert沙漠,
106
243000
3000
04:21
but it probably可能 would not have caused造成
107
246000
2000
04:25
It turns輪流 out that these things don't have to
109
250000
2000
04:27
hit the ground地面 to do a lot of damage損傷.
110
252000
3000
04:30

It was 1908. That's fine. I can live with that.

This did a huge巨大 amount of damage損傷.
126
294000

05:11
And again, this was a rock岩石 probably可能 roughly大約

05:13
the size大小 of this auditorium禮堂 that we're sitting in.
128
298000

05:15
In Meteor流星 Crater火山口 it was made作出 of metal金屬,
129
300000
2000
05:17
and metal金屬 is much tougher強硬, so it made作出 it
130
302000
2000

05:21
The one over Tunguska通古斯 was probably可能 made作出
132
306000
2000
05:23
of rock岩石, and that's much more crumbly易碎, so it
133

2000
05:25
blew up in the air空氣. Either一係 way, these are
134
310000

20 megatons.
135
312000
3000
05:30
Now, when these things blow打擊 up, they're not
136
315000
2000
05:32
going to do global全球 ecological生態 damage損傷.
137
317000
3000
05:35
They're not going to do something like
138
320000
2000
05:37
the dinosaur-killer恐龍殺手 did.
139
322000
2000
05:39
They're just not big enough.
140
324000
2000
05:41
But they will do global全球 economic經濟 damage損傷,
141
326000
2000
05:43
because they don't have to hit, necessarily必然,
142
328000
2000
05:45
to do this kind一種 of damage損傷.
143
330000
2000
05:47
They don't have to do global全球 devastation破壞.
144
332000
2000
05:49
If one of these things were to hit
145
334000

05:51
pretty much anywhere地方, it would cause原因 a panic恐慌.
146
336000
2000
05:53
But if it came over a city城市, an important重要 city城市 --
147
338000
2000
05:55
not that any city城市 is more important重要 than others,
148
340000
2000
05:57
but some of them we depend依賴 on them more
149
342000
2000
05:59
on the global全球 economic經濟 basis基礎 -- that could do
150
344000
3000
06:02
a huge巨大 amount of damage損傷 to us
151
347000
3000
06:05
as a civilization文明.
152
350000
2000
06:07
So, now that I've scared害怕 the crap廢話 out of you ...
153
352000
3000
06:10
(Laughter
154
355000
2000
06:12
what can we do about this? All right?
155
357000
2000
06:14
This is a potential threat
156
359000
2000
06:16
Let me note注意 that we have not had
157
361000
2000
06:18
a giant巨大 impact影響 like the dinosaur-killer恐龍殺手
158
363000
2000
06:20
for 65 million years. They're very rare罕見.
159
365000
3000
06:23
The smaller ones happen發生 more often經常, but
160
368000
3000
06:26
probably可能 on the order of a millennium千禧年,
161
371000
2000
06:28
every few幾個 centuries世紀 or every few幾個 thousand
162
373000
2000
06:30
years, but it's still something to be aware of.
163
375000
3000
06:33
Well, what do we do about them?
164
378000
2000
06:35
The first thing we have to do is find them.
165
380000
2000
06:37
This is an image圖像 of an asteroid小行星 that passed透過
166
382000
2000
06:39
us in 2009.
167
384000
2000
06:41
It's right here.
168
386000
2000
06:43
But you can see that it's extremely faint
169
388000
2000
06:45
I don't even know if you can see that
170
390000
2000
06:47
in the back row. These are just stars星星.
171
392000
2000
06:49
This is a rock岩石 that was about 30 yards across,
172
394000

06:51
so roughly大約 the size大小 of the ones that blew up
173
396000

06:53
over Tunguska通古斯 and hit Arizona亞利桑那州 50,000 years ago.
174
398000
3000
06:56
These things are faint
175
401000
2000
06:58
They're hard努力 to see, and the sky天空 is really big.
176
403000
2000
07:00
We have to find these things first.
177
405000
2000
07:02
Well the good news新聞 is, we're looking for them.
178
407000
2000
07:04
NASANasa has devoted專門 money to this.

181
413000
2000
07:10
We're building建築 telescopes望遠鏡 that are looking
182
415000
2000
07:12
for the threat威脅. That's a great first step,
183
417000
2000
07:14
but what's the second第二 step? The second第二 step
184
419000
2000
07:16
is that we see one headingtitle toward us,
185
421000
2000
07:18
we have to stop it. What do we do?
186
423000
2000
07:20
You've probably可能 heard聽到 about the asteroid小行星
187
425000
2000
If you haven't yet尚未, you will.
188
427000
3000
07:25
If you've heard聽到 about the Mayan瑪雅 2012
189
430000
2000
07:27
apocalypse啟示, you're going to hear聽到 about Apophis阿波菲斯,
190
432000
2000
07:29
because you're keyed鍵控 in to all the doomsday末日
191
434000
2000
07:34
Apophis阿波菲斯 is an asteroid小行星 that was discovered發現 in 2004.
193
439000
3000
07:37
It's roughly大約 250 yards across, so it's
194
442000
3000
07:40
pretty big -- big size大小, you know,
195
445000
2000
07:42
bigger than a football足球 stadium體育場 -- and it's going to
196
447000
2000
07:44
pass透過 by the Earth地球 in April四月 of 2029.
197
449000
3000
07:47
And it's going to pass透過 us so close關閉 that it's
198
452000
2000
07:49
actually講真 going to come underneath下面
199
454000
2000
07:51
our weather天氣 satellites衛星.
200
456000

07:53
The Earth's地球嘅 gravity重力 is going to bend the orbit軌道
201

07:55
of this thing so much that if it's just right,
202
460000
3000
07:58
if it passes透過 through透過 this region一區 of space空間,
203
463000
3000
08:01
this kidney bean-shaped豆形 region一區 called

08:03
the keyhole, the Earth's地球嘅 gravity重力 will bend it
205
468000
2000
08:05
just enough that seven years later之後
206
470000
2000
08:07
on April四月 13, which is a Friday星期五, I'll note注意,
207
472000
2000
08:09
in the year 2036 ... (Laughter笑聲)
208
474000
3000
08:12
-- you can't plan計劃 that kind一種 of stuff啲嘢 --
209
477000
3000
08:15
Apophis阿波菲斯 is going to hit us. And it's
210
480000
2000
08:17
250 meters across, so it would do
211
482000
2000
08:21
Now the good news新聞 is that the odds賠率 of it
213
486000
2000
08:23
actually講真 passing透過 through透過 this keyhole and
214
488000
2000
08:25
hitting us next go-around過檔 are one in a million,
215
490000
2000

08:29
am not lying awake清醒 at night worrying about this at all.
217
494000
2000
08:31
I don't think Apophis阿波菲斯 is a problem個問題.
218
496000
2000
08:33
In fact事實, Apophis阿波菲斯 is a blessing祝福 in disguise裝假狗,
219
498000
2000
08:35
because it woke瞓醒 us up to the dangers危險
220
500000
2000
08:37
of these things.
221
502000
2000
08:39
This thing was discovered發現 just a few幾個 years
222
504000
2000
08:41
ago and could hit us a few幾個 years from now.
223
506000
2000
08:43
It won't唔會, but it gives us a chance機會 to study研究
224
508000
2000
08:45
these kinds of asteroids小行星. We didn't really
225
510000
2000
08:47
necessarily必然 understand理解 these keyholes匙孔, and
226
512000
2000
08:49
now we do and it turns輪流 out
227
514000
2000
08:51
that's really important重要, because how do you
228
516000
2000
08:53
stop an asteroid小行星 like this?
229
518000
2000
08:55
Well, let me ask問吓 you, what happens發生 if you're
230
520000
2000
08:57
standing in the middle中間 of the road道路 and a car's架車嘅
231
522000
2000
08:59
headed領導 for you? What do you do? You do this.
232
524000
2000
09:01
Right? Move移動. The car架車 goes past過去 you.
233
526000
2000
09:03
But we can't move移動 the Earth地球, at least最小
234
528000
2000
09:05
not easily容易, but we can move移動 a small asteroid小行星.
235
530000
2000
09:07
And it turns輪流 out, we've我哋都 even done it.
236
532000
2000
09:09
In the year 2005, NASANasa launched推出 a probe探針
237
534000
3000
09:12
called Deep Impact影響, which slammed抨擊 into --
238
537000
3000
09:15
slammed抨擊 a piece一塊 of itself本身 into the nucleus of a comet彗星.
239
540000
3000
09:18
Comets彗星 are very much like asteroids小行星.
240
543000
2000
09:20
The purpose目的 wasn't唔係 to push it out of the way.
241
545000
2000
09:22
The purpose目的 was to make a crater火山口 to excavate挖掘
242
547000
2000
09:24
the material材料 and see what was underneath下面
243
549000
2000
09:26
the surface表面 of this comet彗星, which we learned
244
551000
2000
09:28
quite都幾 a bit about.
245
553000
2000
09:30
We did move移動 the comet彗星 a little tiny bit,
246
555000
2000
09:32
not very much, but that wasn't唔係 the pointD.
247
557000
2000
09:34
However然而, think about this.
248
559000
2000
09:36
This thing is orbiting軌道 the sun太陽 at
249
561000
2000
09:40
We shot拍攝 a space空間 probe探針 at it and hit it. Okay?
251
565000
2000
09:42
Imagine想象 how hard努力 that must必須 be, and we did it.
252
567000
3000
09:45
That means意味着 we can do it again.
253
570000
3000
09:48
If we need, if we see an asteroid小行星 that's coming
254
573000
2000
09:50
toward us, and it's headed領導 right for us,
255
575000
2000
09:52
and we have two years to go, boom繁榮! We hit it.
256
577000
3000
09:55
You can try to -- you know, if you watch
257
580000
2000
09:57
the movies電影, you might可能 think about,
258
582000
2000
09:59
why don't we use a nuclear weapon武器?
259
584000
2000
10:01
It's like, well, you can try that, but the problem個問題 is timing時間.
260
586000
2000
10:03
You shoot開槍 a nuclear weapon武器 at this thing,
261
588000
2000
10:05
you have to blow打擊 it up within a few幾個 milliseconds毫秒
262
590000
2000
10:07
of tolerance寬容 or else you'll你咪會 just miss it.
263
592000
2000
10:09
And there are a lot of other problems個問題
264
594000
2000
10:11
with that. It's very hard努力 to do.
265
596000
2000
10:13
But just hitting something? That's pretty easy容易.
266
598000
2000
10:15
I think even NASANasa can do that,
267
600000
2000
10:17
and they proved證明 that they can. (Laughter笑聲)
268
602000
2000
10:19
The problem個問題 is, what happens發生 if you hit
269
604000
2000
10:21
this asteroid小行星, you've changed the orbit軌道,
270
606000
2000
10:23
you measure措施 the orbit軌道 and then you find out,
271
608000
2000
10:25
oh, yeah, we just pushed it into a keyhole,
272
610000
2000
10:27
and now it's going to hit us in three years.
273
612000
2000
10:29
Well, my opinion意見 is, fine. Okay?
274
614000
2000
10:31
It's not hitting us in six months. That's good.
275
616000
2000
10:33
Now we have three years to do something else.
276
618000
3000
10:36
And you can hit it again. That's kind一種 of
277
621000
2000
You might可能 just push it into a third第三
278
623000
2000
10:40
keyhole or whatever無論, so you don't do that.
279
625000
2000
10:42
And this is the part部分, it's the part部分 I just love.
280
627000
4000
10:46
(Laughter
281
631000

11:12
astronauts宇航員, like I said, engineers工程師.
293
657000
2000
11:14
Rusty生銹 Schweickart施韦卡特, who was an Apollo阿波羅 9
294
659000
2000
11:16
astronaut宇航員, is on this. Dan DurdaDurda, my friend朋友
295
661000
2000
11:18
who made作出 this image圖像, works工程 here at
296
663000
2000
11:22
on Walnut核桃 Street. He created創建 this image圖像 for this,
298
667000
2000
11:24
and he's actually講真 one of the astronomers天文學家
299
669000
2000
11:26
who works工程 for them. If we see an asteroid小行星
300
671000
2000
11:28
that's going to hit the Earth地球 and we have
301
673000
2000
11:30
enough time, we can hit it to move移動 it into
302
675000
3000
11:33
a better orbit軌道. But then what we do is we launch發射
303
678000
3000
11:36
a probe探針 that has to weigh權衡 a ton or two.
304
681000
2000
11:38
It doesn't have to be huge巨大 -- couple夫婦 of tons,
305
683000
3000
11:41
not that big -- and you park公園 it near附近 the asteroid小行星.
306
686000
3000
11:44
You don't land土地 on it, because these things are
307
689000
2000
11:46
tumbling翻滾 end結束 over end結束. It's very hard努力 to land土地 on them.
308
691000
2000
11:48
Instead相反 you get near附近 it.
309
693000
2000
11:50
The gravity重力 of the asteroid小行星 pulls on the probe探針,
310
695000
2000
11:52
and the probe探針 has a couple夫婦 of tons of mass質素.
311
697000
3000
11:55
It has a little tiny bit of gravity重力, but it's enough
312
700000
2000
11:57
that it can pull the asteroid小行星, and you have your
313
702000
2000
11:59
rockets火箭 set設置 up, so you can -- oh, you can barely爭 D
314
704000
2000
12:01
see it here, but there's rocket火箭 plumes羽狀 -- and you
315
706000
2000
12:03
basically基本上, these guys are connected連接 by their佢哋
316
708000
2000
12:05
own自己 gravity重力, and if you move移動 the probe探針 very
317
710000
3000
12:08
slowly慢慢, very, very gently輕輕, you can very easily容易
318
713000
4000
12:12
finesse技巧 that rock岩石 into a safe安全 orbit軌道.
319
717000
3000
12:15
You can even put in orbit軌道 around the Earth地球
320
720000
2000
12:17
where we could mine it, although雖然 that's a
321
722000
2000
12:19
whole整個 other thing. I won't唔會 go into that.
322
724000
2000
12:21
(Laughter
323
726000
2000
12:23
But we'd我哋會 be rich豐富!
324
728000
2000
12:25
(Laughter
325
730000
5000
12:30
So think about this, right?
326
735000
2000
12:32
There are these giant巨大 rocks岩石 flying飛行 out there,
327
737000
2000
12:34
and they're hitting us, and they're doing
328
739000
2000
12:36
damage損傷 to us, but we've我哋都 figured out how to do
329
741000
2000
12:38
this, and all the pieces are in place地方 to do this.
330
743000
3000
12:41
We have astronomers天文學家 in place地方 with telescopes望遠鏡
331
746000
2000
12:43
looking for them. We have smart people,
332
748000
2000
12:45
very, very smart people, who are concerned有關
333
750000
2000
12:47
about this and figuring盤算 out how to fix修復 the
334
752000
2000
12:49
problem個問題, and we have the technology技術 to do this.
335
754000
3000
12:52
This probe探針 actually講真 can't use chemical化學 rockets火箭.
336
757000
2000
12:54
Chemical化學 rockets火箭 provide提供 too much thrust推力, too
337
759000
2000
12:56
much push. The probe探針 would just shoot開槍 away.
338
761000
2000
12:58
We invented發明 something called an ion離子 drive驅動,
339
763000
2000
13:00
which is a very, very, very low-thrust低推力 engine發動機.
340
765000
3000
13:03
It generates生成 the force a piece一塊 of paper would
341
768000
2000
13:05
have on your hand, incredibly令人難以置信 light,
342
770000
2000
13:07
but it can run運行 for months and years,
343
772000
3000
13:10
providing提供 that very gentle溫柔 push.
344
775000
3000
13:13
If anybody任何人 here is a fan風扇 of the original源語言 "Star明星 Trek迷航,"
345
778000
2000
13:15
they ran across an alien外星人 ship that had
346
780000
2000
13:17
an ion離子 drive驅動, and Spock斯波克 said,
347
782000
2000
13:19
"They're very technically技術 sophisticated複雜.
348
784000
2000
13:21
They're a hundred years ahead提前 of us with this drive驅動."
349
786000
2000
13:23
Yeah, we have an ion離子 drive驅動 now. (Laughter笑聲)
350
788000
2000
13:25
We don't have the Enterprise企業, but
351
790000
2000
13:27
we've我哋都 got an ion離子 drive驅動 now.
352
792000
2000
13:29
(Applause
353
794000
3000
13:32
Spock
354
797000
2000
13:34
(Laughter
355
799000
3000
13:37
So ...
356
802000
2000
所以...
13:39
that's the difference差異, that's the difference差異
357
804000
2000
13:41
between之間 us and the dinosaurs恐龍.
358
806000
2000
13:43
This happened發生 to them.
359
808000
2000
13:45
It doesn't have to happen發生 to us.
360
810000
2000
13:47
The difference差異 between之間 the dinosaurs恐龍 and us
361
812000
3000
13:50
is that we have a space空間 program程序
362
815000
2000
13:52
and we can vote投票,
363
817000
2000
13:54
and so we can change our future未來.
364
819000
3000
13:57
(Laughter
365
822000
1000
13:58
We have the ability能力 to change our future未來.
366
823000
3000
14:01
65 million years from now,
367
826000
2000
14:03
we don't have to have our bones
