Bruce Lee is my father,
0
792
1601
00:14
and he is best well-known
as a martial artist
1
2417
2351
00:16
and an action film star,
2
4792
1517
00:18
as I'm sure most of you know.
3
6333
2101
00:20
He died when I was four years old,
4
8458
2351
00:22
but I have a really deep memory of him.
5
10833
3560
00:26
I don't have those long-form, storied
memories that you do when you're older,
6
14417
4059
00:30
but the memory that I do have
is of the feeling of him.
7
18500
5292
00:36
I remember his energy,
8
24625
2268
00:38
his presence,
9
26917
1267
00:40
his love --
10
28208
1268
00:41
the safety of it,
11
29500
1268
00:42
the power of it,
12
30792
1266
00:44
the radiance of it.
13
32083
1542
00:46
And to me that memory
is very deep and personal.
14
34458
4893
00:51
And it is the memory of the quality
of his essential nature.
15
39375
5417
00:58
What a lot of people
don't know about my father
16
46125
2226
01:00
is that he was also a philosopher.
17
48375
2351
01:02
He had a very ever-evolving philosophy
18
50750
4559
01:07
that he lived,
19
55333
2518
01:09
and it is that distinction --
that he lived his philosophy
20
57875
3643
01:13
and didn't just espouse his philosophy --
21
61542
2642
01:16
that made him the force of nature
that he was, and still engages us today.
22
64208
5667
01:22
His wisdom has salvaged me
many times in my life:
23
70833
4143
01:27
when my brother died,
24
75000
1934
01:28
when my heart's been broken,
25
76958
1393
01:30
whenever I have faced a challenge
to my mind, my body or my spirit,
26
78375
5559
01:35
the way that he expressed
himself has lifted me up.
27
83958
5625
01:42
And so I come to you today
not as a researcher
28
90542
2892
01:45
or an educator or a guru
29
93458
2393
01:47
or even a life coach,
30
95875
2393
01:50
but as a student of Bruce Lee --
31
98292
2392
01:52
as his daughter,
32
100708
1476
01:54
and also as a student of my own life.
33
102208
3542
01:58
So ...
34
106625
1851
02:00
my big burning question that I want
you all to consider today is ...
35
108500
5101
02:05
how are you?
36
113625
1375
02:07
Let me elaborate.
37
115792
1250
02:10
Whenever anyone would ask my mom
what my father was like,
38
118167
4392
02:14
she would say, "How he was
in front of the camera,
39
122583
2393
02:17
how you saw him in his films,
40
125000
1559
02:18
how you saw him in his interviews
41
126583
2185
02:20
was, in fact, exactly how he was."
42
128792
3476
02:24
There were not multiple Bruce Lees.
43
132292
2684
02:27
There was not public Bruce Lee
and private Bruce Lee,
44
135000
2726
02:29
or teacher Bruce Lee and actor Bruce Lee
and family man Bruce Lee.
45
137750
4309
02:34
There was just one
unified, total Bruce Lee.
46
142083
4500
02:39
And that Bruce Lee had a very deep,
philosophical life practice
47
147417
4642
02:44
called self-actualization.
48
152083
1976
02:46
You've probably heard that term before.
49
154083
1858
02:48
It's also known as how to be yourself
in the best way possible.
50
156917
4416
02:54
And that Bruce Lee said this:
51
162125
3018
02:57
"When I look around,
I always learn something
52
165167
2142
02:59
and that is to be always yourself,
53
167333
3143
03:02
and to express yourself
and have faith in yourself.
54
170500
3351
03:05
Don't go out and find a successful
personality and duplicate it,
55
173875
3559
03:09
but rather start
from the very root of your being,
56
177458
2768
03:12
which is 'How can I be me?'"
57
180250
3434
03:15
Many of us have done some soul-searching
58
183708
2935
03:18
or at least some incessant
thinking and worrying
59
186667
2267
03:20
about things like our purpose,
our passion, our impact,
60
188958
5476
03:26
our values
61
194458
1667
03:29
and our "reason for being."
62
197042
3226
03:32
And that is sometimes considered our why.
63
200292
3351
03:35
Why am I here? Why this life?
64
203667
2226
03:37
What am I meant to be doing?
65
205917
3059
03:41
If we can grab a little piece
of that information,
66
209000
3809
03:44
it can help to ground us and root us,
67
212833
3393
03:48
and it can also point us in a direction,
68
216250
2226
03:50
and typically what it
points us to is our what.
69
218500
3976
03:54
What we manifest in the world,
70
222500
1476
03:56
what we have.
71
224000
1268
03:57
So our job, our home,
our hobbies and the like.
72
225292
5559
04:02
But there's this little space
in between the why and the what
73
230875
3643
04:06
that often doesn't get our full attention,
74
234542
3059
04:09
and that is our ...
75
237625
1976
04:11
how.
76
239625
1268
04:12
How we get there
and the quality of that doing.
77
240917
3250
04:17
And I want to offer that this is actually
the most important part of the equation
78
245500
6018
04:23
when it comes to our personal growth,
79
251542
2601
04:26
our sense of wholeness
80
254167
1934
04:28
and even the long-term
impact that we make.
81
256125
4000
04:33
How is the action that bridges the gap
from the internal to the external.
82
261958
6768
04:40
And bridging the gap
is a very important concept
83
268750
3934
04:44
for martial artists like my father.
84
272708
1726
04:46
It's how you get from point A to point B.
85
274458
2768
04:49
It's how you get from here to your target
under the most vital of circumstances.
86
277250
4875
04:54
And so it makes all the difference.
87
282833
3268
04:58
Do you get there as an amateur?
Are you sloppy?
88
286125
2684
05:00
Are you wild, chaotic,
89
288833
3060
05:03
sometimes you get lucky,
sometimes you're not lucky?
90
291917
2809
05:06
Or are you a warrior?
91
294750
2018
05:08
Are you confident?
92
296792
1934
05:10
Are you focused?
93
298750
1518
05:12
Are you skilled?
94
300292
1267
05:13
Are you intuitive?
95
301583
1268
05:14
Are you expressive, creative, aware?
96
302875
2684
05:17
So I want to talk to you today
about your how in your life.
97
305583
4959
05:23
So we do a little bit of --
98
311333
2643
05:26
we spend a little time
in existential crisis
99
314000
2518
05:28
over "Why am I here?
What am I meant to be doing?"
100
316542
2976
05:31
and we put a ton of effort
into our what --
101
319542
3809
05:35
our job, our career,
our partner that we have
102
323375
4309
05:39
and the hobbies we pursue.
103
327708
3768
05:43
But I want us to consider
104
331500
2059
05:45
that our how is the expression of our why
105
333583
7185
05:52
in every what,
106
340792
2142
05:54
whether we're aware of it or not.
107
342958
1625
05:57
And so let's take an example.
108
345833
2810
06:00
Let's say that I have a value of kindness.
109
348667
4059
06:04
I'm all about kindness,
110
352750
1643
06:06
I feel really natural being kind,
111
354417
2934
06:09
I want to see more kindness in the world.
112
357375
2809
06:12
Is that kindness --
113
360208
1518
06:13
is that value in the result
114
361750
2768
06:16
or is it in the doing?
115
364542
1583
06:19
Are you trying to be kind
when it's hard to be kind?
116
367042
3625
06:23
Can you do something
you don't want to do kindly,
117
371875
2809
06:26
like fire someone?
118
374708
1976
06:28
Can you leave
a relationship with kindness?
119
376708
2560
06:31
If kindness is the value,
120
379292
2851
06:34
then are you trying to express it
121
382167
3267
06:37
in the whole spectrum of your doing --
122
385458
2810
06:40
and trying to do that?
123
388292
2750
06:44
Or are you just doing it when it's easy?
124
392458
2250
06:47
So I want us to think
about that for a moment
125
395208
3185
06:50
and consider, you know, if we come home
126
398417
3059
06:53
and we're kind and generous
and loving with our kids,
127
401500
4518
06:58
but then we go to work
128
406042
1559
06:59
and we are dismissive
129
407625
3268
07:02
and rude to our assistant
130
410917
2892
07:05
and we treat them like a subhuman,
131
413833
1935
07:07
then there is a fragmentation
in the beingness of our value.
132
415792
5041
07:14
And so I want us to consider
that how we are in our lives
133
422083
4643
07:18
is in fact how we are.
134
426750
2268
07:21
Meaning, if I am the kind of person
135
429042
2601
07:23
that walks down the street
and smiles at people
136
431667
4351
07:28
and says "hi" as I walk
past them on the sidewalk,
137
436042
2476
07:30
then that is how I am.
138
438542
1684
07:32
But if I'm also the kind of person
who makes fun of my brother
139
440250
6184
07:38
every chance that I get behind his back,
140
446458
3351
07:41
that is also the kind of person that I am.
141
449833
3185
07:45
And ultimately how we are
142
453042
3101
07:48
makes up the totality
of the picture of who we are.
143
456167
3458
07:52
And so I want to talk about
how do we unite these pieces
144
460792
4976
07:57
if we have any fragmentation.
145
465792
1476
07:59
I want to understand
how we embody ourselves
146
467292
4392
08:03
as our one and only self.
147
471708
3143
08:06
How do we actualize the whole self?
148
474875
3309
08:10
My father said, "All goals
apart from the means are an illusion.
149
478208
3435
08:13
There will never be means to ends --
150
481667
2517
08:16
only means.
151
484208
1268
08:17
And I am means.
152
485500
2643
08:20
I am what I started with
153
488167
1559
08:21
and when it is all over,
154
489750
1309
08:23
I will be all that is left."
155
491083
2226
08:25
So you can employ a systematic approach
to training and practicing,
156
493333
3185
08:28
but you can't employ
a systematic approach to actually living
157
496542
2892
08:31
because life is a process not a goal.
158
499458
3851
08:35
It is a means and not an end.
159
503333
3476
08:38
So "to obtain enlightenment" --
160
506833
2976
08:41
and I'm going to say self-actualize,
161
509833
4018
08:45
to be self-actualized
or to obtain wholeness --
162
513875
3476
08:49
"emphasis should fall
NOT on the cultivation
163
517375
2476
08:51
of the particular department" --
164
519875
1558
08:53
all of our whats --
165
521457
1811
08:55
"which then merges into the totality
of who we are as a total human being,
166
523292
4226
08:59
but rather, on the total human being
167
527542
3309
09:02
that then enters into and unites
those particular departments."
168
530875
5518
09:08
You are your how.
169
536417
1333
09:11
You --
170
539208
1351
09:12
if you have some consciousness
171
540583
2268
09:14
and you want to bring some practice,
172
542875
1768
09:16
if you want to step
into that warrior space
173
544667
3267
09:19
around your how --
174
547958
1810
09:21
how you express
in every aspect of your life --
175
549792
5142
09:26
then you get to be the artist
of that expression.
176
554958
4893
09:31
You get to step into that and claim it
177
559875
5601
09:37
and exercise it
178
565500
1559
09:39
and bring that beingness
through your doingness
179
567083
5685
09:44
into your havingness.
180
572792
1833
09:47
And there you will find
the most profound of your growth,
181
575500
5226
09:52
you will find a sense of wholeness
182
580750
3309
09:56
and ultimately, you will leave
a lasting impact on your environment.
183
584083
4667
10:01
My father was his how.
184
589917
3226
10:05
He applied the execution of who he was
185
593167
5309
10:10
to every aspect of his life.
186
598500
2643
10:13
He was way more than
that kung fu guy from the '70s.
187
601167
4875
10:18
He was someone who worked very hard
at actualizing his inner self
188
606833
5518
10:24
and expressing it out into the world.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Shannon Lee - Actor, producer, writer
Shannon Lee’s mission is to provide access for people to Bruce Lee’s philosophy through education and entertainment.

Why you should listen

Shannon Lee is the CEO of Bruce Lee Family Companies and executive producer of Cinemax's Warrior, which is based on her father's writings. Lee is a singer, actor, producer, speaker, writer and mother. Her first book -- on her father's philosophy and how to use it in daily life -- will be published in 2020.

Lee also chairs the Bruce Lee Foundation, a 501c3 charity that serves young people by introducing them to martial arts, philosophy, self-discovery and harmonious living. The foundation awards scholarships for programs like Camp Bruce Lee -- a summer camp that teaches Bruce Lee's philosophy to kids ages 5-11 by engaging their mind, body and spirit. Through these different channels, Lee hopes that Bruce Lee's energy and ideas will uplift the planet and create harmony among our human family.
