01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,

28

2855
ki ni bil prisoten večino
mojega zgodnjega otroštva,
mojega zgodnjega otroštva,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
je počel isto kot vsi drugo moški:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30

boril se je za domovino.

02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,

Tako je bilo, ker moja mama
izhaja iz revne družine

in ni imela nobene druge izbire.

My father, on the other hand, was rich.

Moj oče pa je bil bogat.
02:15
He had many cows.

Imel je veliko krav.
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
Streljanje je bilo na dnevnem redu.
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
Moja skupnost je bila nenehno napadena.
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
Skupnosti so se borile druga proti
drugi, ko so ob Nilu zajemale vodo.
drugi, ko so ob Nilu zajemale vodo.
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
A to ni bilo vse.
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
Letala so odmetavala vrteče
in strašne bombe,
in strašne bombe,
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
ki so ljudem sekale ude.
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
A najstrašnejša stvar za vsakega
starša je bila
starša je bila
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735

videti svojega otroka ugrabljenega
in spremenjenega v mladega vojaka.
in spremenjenega v mladega vojaka.
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
Moja mama je skopala jarek,
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
ki je kmalu postal naš dom.
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
A vseeno se nismo počutili varne.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
Morala je pobegniti, da bi
našla varno mesto za nas.
našla varno mesto za nas.
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
Imela sem štiri leta,
moja mlajša sestra pa dve.
moja mlajša sestra pa dve.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
Pridružile smo se veliki skupini ljudi
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
in skupaj smo hodile mnogo mučnih dni,
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
da bi našle varen kraj.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
A komaj smo si malo odpočile,
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
smo bili spet napadeni.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Spomnim se, da je bila mama noseča,
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
ko je izmenjaje nosila mene
in mojo mlajšo sestro.
in mojo mlajšo sestro.
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
Končno nam je uspelo prečkati
mejo s Kenijo.
mejo s Kenijo.
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
A to je bila najdaljša pot
v mojem življenju.
v mojem življenju.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Moja stopala so bila polna svežih mehurjev.
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
Na naše veliko presenečenje
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
smo našle druge družinske člane,
ki so že prej pobegnili v kamp,
ki so že prej pobegnili v kamp,
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
kjer ste danes,
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
v kamp Kakuma.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Zdaj pa bi rada, da ste
za trenutek vsi čisto tiho.
za trenutek vsi čisto tiho.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Slišite?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
Zvok tišine.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Nobenega streljanja.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Končno mir.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
To je moj prvi spomin iz tega kampa.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Ko se preseliš iz vojnega območja
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
in prideš na varen kraj, kot je Kakuma,
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
si res prišel daleč.
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Tu sem sicer ostala samo tri leta.
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
Moj oče, ki je bil odsoten večino
mojega ranega otroštva,
mojega ranega otroštva,
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
se je vrnil v moje življenje.
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
Organiziral je, da sem se
lahko preselila k svojemu stricu
lahko preselila k svojemu stricu
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
k naši družini v Nakuru.
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Tam sem našla očetovo prvo ženo,
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
svoje polsestre in polbrate.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
Vpisala sem se v šolo.
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Spomnim se svojega prvega šolskega
dne - spet sem lahko pela in se smejala -
dne - spet sem lahko pela in se smejala -
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
in moje prve šolske uniforme.
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
Bilo je čudovito.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Potem pa sem se zavedla,
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
da se mojemu stricu ni zdelo
prav, da hodim v šolo,
prav, da hodim v šolo,
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
preprosto zato, ker sem bila deklica.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
Moji polbratje so bili njegova prioriteta.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
Govoril je: "Izobraževanje deklet
je izguba časa."
je izguba časa."
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
In zato sem manjkala veliko dni v šoli,
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
ker šolnina ni bila plačana.
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
Moj oče je pristopil
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
in organiziral, da sem šla v internat.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Spomnim se vere, ki jo je
vtisnil vame v naslednjih nekaj letih.
vtisnil vame v naslednjih nekaj letih.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Govoril je: "Izobraževanje je žival,
ki jo moraš premagati.
ki jo moraš premagati.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
Z izobrazbo lahko preživiš.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
Izobrazba naj bo tvoj prvi mož."
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
In s temi besedami
je sprožil svojo prvo naložbo.
je sprožil svojo prvo naložbo.
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
Počutila sem se srečno!
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
A nekaj sem pogrešala:
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
svojo mamo.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
Moja mama je ostala v kampu
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
in nisem je videla, odkar sem odšla.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Šest let, ko je nisem videla,
je bilo res dolgih.
je bilo res dolgih.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Bila sem sama,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
v šoli,
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
ko sem slišala za njeno smrt.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
V Južnem Sudanu sem videla
veliko ljudi,
veliko ljudi,
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
ki so izgubili življenje.
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
Od sosedov sem slišala,
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
kako so izgubili svoje sinove, može,
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
otroke.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Nikoli pa nisem pomislila,
da se bo kaj takega zgodilo meni.
da se bo kaj takega zgodilo meni.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
Mesec dni prej je moja mačeha,
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
ki je bila v Nakuruju tako dobra
z mano, umrla prva.
z mano, umrla prva.
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Takrat sem se zavedla, da je
po tem, ko je rodila štiri deklice,
po tem, ko je rodila štiri deklice,
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
moja mama končno rodila nekaj,
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
zaradi česar bi lahko bila
v skupnosti sprejeta -
v skupnosti sprejeta -
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
dečka,
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
mojega bratca.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
A tudi on
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
se je zapisal na seznam umrlih.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
Najbolj boleče zame
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
je bilo dejstvo, da nisem mogla
na mamin pogreb.
na mamin pogreb.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
Ni mi bilo dovoljeno.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Rekli so, da se njeni družini
ne zdi primerno,
ne zdi primerno,
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
da bi njeni otroci, sama dekleta,
prisostvovali pogrebu,
prisostvovali pogrebu,
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
preprosto zato, ker so dekleta.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Objokovali so jo pred menoj in rekli:
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
"Hudo nam je, Mary, za tvojo izgubo.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
Hudo nam je, da tvoji starši
za seboj niso pustili nič otrok."
za seboj niso pustili nič otrok."
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
Jaz pa sem se čudila:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
Kaj pa smo me?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
Ali me nismo otroci?
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
V mentaliteti moje skupnosti
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
šteje samo otrok moškega spola.
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
Zato sem vedela, da je to zame konec.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
A bila sem najstarejša med dekleti
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
in morala sem skrbeti za svoje sestre.
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
Morala sem poskrbeti, da so hodile v šolo.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
Stara sem bila trinajst let.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Le kako mi je uspelo?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
Vrnila sem se v kamp,
da bi skrbela za sestre.
da bi skrbela za sestre.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Nikoli se nisem počutila tako ujeto.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Potem pa se je ena izmed
mojh tet, teta Okoi,
mojh tet, teta Okoi,
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
odločila vzeti moje sestre.
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
Oče mi je posla denar iz Jube,
da bi se vrnila v šolo.
da bi se vrnila v šolo.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
Internatska šola je bila nebesa,
a tudi težka.
a tudi težka.
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
Spomnim se dni obiskov,
ko so starši prihajali v šolo,
ko so starši prihajali v šolo,
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
mojega očeta pa ni bilo.
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Ko pa je le prišel,
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
mi je vedno znova vbijal isto vero.
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
Tokrat je govoril:
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
"Mary, ne moreš zaiti na stranpoti,
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
ker si prihodnost svojih sestra."
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Potem, leta 2012,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
mi je življenje vzelo edino stvar,
ki sem se je oklepala.
ki sem se je oklepala.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
Umrl mi je oče.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
Moje ocene so se začele nižati
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
in na zaključnih izpitih
v srednji šoli leta 2015
v srednji šoli leta 2015
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
sem bila pretresena,
ko sem dobila oceno dobro.
ko sem dobila oceno dobro.
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
No prav, svojim učencem pri pouku
vedno govorim:
vedno govorim:
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
"Ne gre za petice, gre za to, da se
potrudiš po svojih najboljših močeh."
potrudiš po svojih najboljših močeh."
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
To ni bilo največ, kar sem zmogla.
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Bila sem odločena.
Želela sem se vrniti
in poskusiti še enkrat.
in poskusiti še enkrat.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
A bila sem brez staršev.
Nikogar nisem imela, ki bi skrbel zame
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
in plačal šolnino.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
Počutila se se brezupno.
Potem pa me je ena
mojih najboljših prijateljic,
mojih najboljših prijateljic,
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
prelepa kenijska dama Esther Kaecha,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
poklicala v tem strašnem trenutku
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
in rekla: "Mary, ti imaš močno voljo.
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
Jaz pa imam načrt, ki bo deloval."
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
Ko si v takem težkem trenutku,
sprejmeš kar koli, kajne?
sprejmeš kar koli, kajne?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
Načrt je bil, da nama bo dobila
nekaj potovalnega denarja,
nekaj potovalnega denarja,
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
da bova odpotovali v srednjo
šolo za dekleta Anester Victory.
šolo za dekleta Anester Victory.
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
Tistega dne se dobro spomnim.
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Deževalo je, ko sva vstopili
v ravnateljevo pisarno.
v ravnateljevo pisarno.
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Tresli sva se kot mokra piščanca
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
in gledali sva ga.
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
Vprašal naju je: "Kaj želita?"
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Pogledali sva ga z milima obrazoma.
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
"Radi bi šli nazaj v šolo."
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
Verjemite ali ne, ne le da je
plačal najino šolnino,
plačal najino šolnino,
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
ampak tudi najini uniformi
in žepnino za hrano.
in žepnino za hrano.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
Zaploskajmo mu.
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(aplavz)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Ko sem končala s srednješolsko kariero,
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
sem postala glavna.
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
In ko sem drugič opravljala
srednješolske izpite,
srednješolske izpite,
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
mi je uspelo dobiti minus
prav dobro. Zaploskajte.
prav dobro. Zaploskajte.
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
(aplavz)
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Hvala.
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
Zato bi se res rada zahvalila
šoli Anester Victory, g. Gatimuju
šoli Anester Victory, g. Gatimuju
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
in vsej anesterski bratovščini,
ker so mi dali priložnost.
ker so mi dali priložnost.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
Tu in tam
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
člani moje družine vztrajajo,
da bi se jaz in sestre morale poročiti,
da bi se jaz in sestre morale poročiti,
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
da bo nekdo skrbel za nas.
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
Rečejo:
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
"Moškega imamo zate."
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
Res sovražim dejstvo, da so nas ljudje
jemali kot lastnino, ne pa kot otroke.
jemali kot lastnino, ne pa kot otroke.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
Včasih se pošalijo:
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
"Izgubljala boš svojo tržno vrednost,
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
bolj ko boš izobražena."
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
A resnica je,
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
da se v moji skupnosti
izobraženih žensk bojijo.
izobraženih žensk bojijo.
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
A povedala sem jim, da to ni to,
kar želim.
kar želim.
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Pri šestnajstih nočem imeti
otrok kot moja mama.
otrok kot moja mama.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
To ni moje življenje.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Čeprav moje sestre in jaz trpimo,
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
nikakor ne gremo v to smer.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Ne dovolim, da se zgodovina ponovi.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
Izobraževanje deklet bo ustvarilo
enakopravne in stabilne družbe.
enakopravne in stabilne družbe.
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
Izobraženi begunci bodo upanje,
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
da bodo nekoč ponovno zgradili
svoje države.
svoje države.
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
Dekleta in žene igrajo v tem svojo vlogo
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
prav tako kot moški.
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
No, v moji družini imamo tudi
moške, ki me vzpodbujajo, naj nadaljujem:
moške, ki me vzpodbujajo, naj nadaljujem:
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
moji polbratje in tudi moje polsestre.
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Ko sem končala srednjo šolo,
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
sem sestre preselila v Nairobi,
kjer zdaj živijo z mojo krušno sestro.
kjer zdaj živijo z mojo krušno sestro.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
Sedemnajst ljudi živi v eni hiši.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
A ne pomilujte nas.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
Najpomembneje je, da vse dobijo izobrazbo.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
Današnji zmagovalci so
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
včerajšnji poraženci,
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
ki se niso predali.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
In to smo
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
moje sestre in jaz.
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
Tako ponosna sem na to.
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
Moja največja investicija v življenju
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(aplavz)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
je izobrazba mojih sester.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
Izobrazba ustvarja enako in pošteno
priložnost za vsakogar.
priložnost za vsakogar.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Jaz osebno verjamem, da izobrazba
ni le učni načrt.
ni le učni načrt.
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
Je prijateljstvo.
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
Je odkrivanje novih talentov.
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
Je odkrivanje usode.
Nikoli ne bom, na primer, pozabila
veselja, ki sem ga občutila,
veselja, ki sem ga občutila,
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
ko sem prvič v šoli imela uro petja,
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
ki je še vedno moja strast.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
A tega ne bi dobila
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
nikjer drugje.
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Kot učiteljica vidim svoj
razred kot laboratorij,
razred kot laboratorij,
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
ki ne le poraja spretnosti in znanje,
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
ampak tudi razumevanje in upanje.
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Poglejmo drevo.
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
Drevesu lahko porežejo veje,
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
a če mu damo vodo, bo pognalo nove veje.
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
Za otroka iz vojne
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
lahko izobraževanje njihove solze izgube
spremeni v strast do miru.
spremeni v strast do miru.
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
In zato ne bom obupala
nad nobenim svojim učencem.
nad nobenim svojim učencem.
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
(aplavz)
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
Izobraževanje zdravi.
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
Šolsko okolje nudi
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
fokus, da se lahko osredotočiš naprej.
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
Poglejmo takole:
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
ko napeto rešuješ matematične enačbe
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
in se na pamet učiš poezijo,
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
pozabiš na nasilje,
