ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Majora Carter - Activist for environmental justice
Majora Carter redefined the field of environmental equality, starting in the South Bronx at the turn of the century. Now she is leading the local economic development movement across the USA.

Why you should listen

Majora Carter is a visionary voice in city planning who views urban renewal through an environmental lens. The South Bronx native draws a direct connection between ecological, economic and social degradation. Hence her motto: "Green the ghetto!"

With her inspired ideas and fierce persistence, Carter managed to bring the South Bronx its first open-waterfront park in 60 years, Hunts Point Riverside Park. Then she scored $1.25 million in federal funds for a greenway along the South Bronx waterfront, bringing the neighborhood open space, pedestrian and bike paths, and space for mixed-use economic development.

Her success is no surprise to anyone who's seen her speak; Carter's confidence, energy and intensely emotional delivery make her talks themselves a force of nature. (The release of her TEDTalk in 2006 prompted Guy Kawasaki to wonder on his blog whether she wasn't "every bit as good as [Apple CEO] Steve Jobs," a legendary presenter.)

Carter, who was awarded a 2005 MacArthur "genius" grant, served as executive director of Sustainable South Bronx for 7 years, where she pushed both for eco-friendly practices (such as green and cool roofs) and, equally important, job training and green-related economic development for her vibrant neighborhood on the rise. Since leaving SSBx in 2008, Carter has formed the economic consulting and planning firm the Majora Carter Group, to bring her pioneering approach to communities far outside the South Bronx. Carter is working within the cities of New Orleans, Detroit and the small coastal towns of Northeastern North Carolina. The Majora Carter Group is putting the green economy and green economic tools to use, unlocking the potential of every place -- from urban cities and rural communities, to universities, government projects, businesses and corporations -- and everywhere else in between.

07:39
And when the cheapest最便宜 solutions解決方案
188
444000
2000
07:41
involve涉及 reducing減少 the number of jobs工作,
189
446000
2000
07:43
you're left with unemployed失業的 people,
190
448000

07:45
and those people aren't cheap低廉.
191
450000

07:47
In fact事實, they make up some of what I call the most expensive昂貴 citizens公民,

07:56
And for the veterans老兵 in particular特定,

07:58
the V.A. said there's a six-fold六倍 increase增加

08:04
I think that number's數字的 probably大概 going to go up.
199
469000
2000
08:06
They're not the largest最大 number of people,
200
471000
2000
08:08
but they are some of the most expensive昂貴 --

and prevent避免 new problems問題 in the future未來.
210
493000
3000
08:31
And there are plenty豐富 of other examples例子 like that.
211
496000
2000
08:33
One problem問題: waste浪費 handling處理 and unemployment失業.
212
498000
3000
08:36
Even when we think or talk about recycling

08:38
lots of recyclable可回收 stuff東東 ends結束 up getting得到 incinerated焚燒 or in landfills垃圾填埋場

08:44
they leave離開 much to be recycled回收.
216
509000
2000
08:46
And where is this waste浪費 handled處理?
08:49
And we know that eco-industrial生態工業 business商業, these kinds of business商業 models楷模 --

08:55
where either the waste浪費 of one company公司 is the raw生的 material材料 for another另一個,
220
520000
3000
08:58
or you use recycled回收 materials物料
221
523000
2000
09:00
to make goods產品 that you can actually其實 use and sell.
222
525000
2000
09:02
We can create創建 these local本地 markets市場 and incentives獎勵
223
527000
3000
09:05
for recycled回收 materials物料
224
530000
2000
09:07
to be used as raw生的 materials物料 for manufacturing製造業.
225
532000
2000
09:09
And in my hometown家鄉, we actually其實 tried試著 to do one of these in the Bronx布朗克斯,
226
534000
3000
09:12
but our mayor市長 decided決定 what he wanted to see
227
537000
3000
09:15
was a jail監獄 on that same相同 spot.
228
540000
2000
09:17
Fortunately幸好 -- because we wanted to create創建 hundreds數以百計 of jobs工作 --
229
542000
3000
09:20
but after many許多 years年份,
230
545000
2000
09:22
the city wanted to build建立 a jail監獄.
231
547000
2000
09:24
They've他們已經 since以來 abandoned that project項目, thank goodness善良.
232
549000
3000
09:27
Another另一個 problem問題: unhealthy不良 food餐飲 systems系統 and unemployment失業.
233
552000
3000

09:36
It relies依賴 too much on transportation運輸,
237
561000
2000
09:38
chemical化學 fertilization受精, big use of water

244
577000
2000
09:54
And so we know "urban城市的 ag股份公司"
245
579000
2000
09:56
