Sonaar Luthra: Meet the Water Canary

Sonaar Luthra: Conheça O Canário da Água

Filmed:

There was no way to predict

Não havia como prever

00:44
but we still can't do that with water,
12
29000
2000
00:46
and here's why.
13
31000
2000
e aqui está o porquê.
00:48
Right now, if you want to test water in the field,
14
33000
2000
00:50
you need a trained technician,
15
35000
2000
vai precisar de um técnico,
00:52
expensive equipment like this,
16
37000
2000
equipamentos caros como estes,
00:54
and you have to wait about a day
17
39000
2000
e deve esperar cerca de um dia
00:56
for chemical reactions to take place and provide results.
18
41000
3000
00:59
It's too slow
19
44000
2000
É muito demorado
01:01
to get a picture of conditions on the ground
20
46000
2000
avaliar as condições da região
01:03
before they change,
21
48000
2000
antes que elas mudem,
01:05
too expensive to implement
22
50000
2000
muito caro para implantar
01:07
in all the places that require testing.
23
52000
2000
em todos os locais necessários.
01:09
And it ignores the fact that, in the meanwhile,
24
54000
2000
01:11
people still need to drink water.
25
56000
2000
as pessoas precisam beber água.
01:13
Most of the information that we collected on the cholera outbreak
26
58000
3000
01:16
didn't come from testing water;
27
61000
2000
não veio de testes da água;
01:18
it came from forms like this,
28
63000
2000
veio de formulários como este,
01:20
which documented all the people
29
65000
2000
que registraram todas as pessoas
01:22
we failed to help.
30
67000
2000
que falhamos em ajudar.
01:24
Countless lives have been saved
31
69000
2000
Incontáveis vidas têm sido salvas
01:26
by canaries in coalmines --
32
71000
2000
por canários em minas de carvão --
01:28
a simple and invaluable way
33
73000
2000
um modo simples para mineiros
01:30
for miners to know whether they're safe.
34
75000
2000
saberem se estão ou não seguros.
01:32
I've been inspired by that simplicity as I've been working on this problem
35
77000
3000
01:35
with some of the most hardworking and brilliant people I've ever known.
36
80000
3000
01:38
We think there's a simpler solution to this problem --
37
83000
2000
Imaginamos que havia uma solução simples --
01:40
one that can be used
38
85000
2000
uma que poderia ser usada
01:42
by people who face conditions like this everyday.
39
87000
2000
01:44
It's in its early stages,
40
89000
2000
Está em seu estágio inicial,
01:46
but this is what it looks like right now.
41
91000
3000
mas é assim que se parece agora.
01:49
We call it the Water Canary.
42
94000
2000
Nós chamamos de Canário da Água.
01:51
It's a fast, cheap device
43
96000
3000
É um aparelho rápido, barato
01:54
that answers an important question:
44
99000
2000
que responde uma questão importante:
01:56
Is this water contaminated?
45
101000
2000
a água está contaminada?
01:58
It doesn't require any special training.
46
103000
3000
Não necessita de treinamento especializado.
02:01
And instead of waiting for chemical reactions to take place,
47
106000
3000
02:04
it uses light.
48
109000
2000
ele usa luz.
02:06
That means there's no waiting
49
111000
2000
Signficando que não há esperas
02:08
for chemical reactions to take place,
50
113000
2000
por reações químicas se completarem,
02:10
no need to use reagents that can run out
51
115000
2000
sem reagentes que podem acabar
02:12
and no need to be an expert
52
117000
2000
02:14
to get actionable information.
53
119000
3000
para conseguir informação específica.
02:17
To test water, you simply insert a sample
54
122000
2000
02:19
and, within seconds,
55
124000
2000
e, em alguns segundos,
02:21
it either displays a red light, indicating contaminated water,
56
126000
3000
02:24
or a green light, indicating the sample is safe.
57
129000
2000
02:26
This will make it possible
58
131000
2000
Isto tornará possível
02:28
for anyone to collect life-saving information
59
133000
3000
02:31
and to monitor water quality conditions as they unfold.
60
136000
3000
02:34
We're also, on top of that,
61
139000
3000
Também estamos, junto com isso,
02:37
integrating wireless networking
62
142000
3000
integrando rede sem fio
02:40
into an affordable device
63
145000
2000
em um aparelho barato
02:42
with GPS and GSM.
64
147000
2000
com GPS e GSM.
02:44
What that means is that each reading can be automatically transmitted to servers
65
149000
3000
02:47
to be mapped in real time.
66
152000
2000
para ser mapeada em tempo real.
02:49
With enough users,
67
154000
2000
Com vários usuários,
02:51
maps like this will make it possible
68
156000
2000
mapas como este serão possíveis
02:53
to take preventive action,
69
158000
2000
para haver ações preventivas,
02:55
containing hazards before they turn into emergencies
70
160000
3000
02:58
that take years to recover from.
71
163000
2000
que levam anos para se recuperar.
03:00
And then, instead of taking days
72
165000
2000
E assim, em vez de levar dias
03:02
to disseminate this information to the people who need it most,
73
167000
2000
para disseminar esta informação aos necessitados,
03:04
it can happen automatically.
74
169000
3000
ela pode acontecer automaticamente.
03:07
We've seen how distributed networks,
75
172000
2000
Estamos vendo como redes distribuídas,
03:09
big data and information
76
174000
2000
dados e informação
03:11
can transform society.
77
176000
2000
podem transformar uma sociedade.
03:13
I think it's time for us to apply them to water.
78
178000
3000
03:16
Our goal over the next year is to get Water Canary ready for the field
79
181000
2000
03:18
and to open-source the hardware
80
183000
2000
e transformá-lo em código aberto
03:20
so that anyone can contribute to the development and the evaluation,
81
185000
3000
03:23
so we can tackle this problem together.
82
188000
2000
para que possamos combater o problema juntos.
03:25
Thank you.
