When the dream was a notion,
where NASA tested space ships.
but it kept being delayed.
in a bed of wrecked strawberries.
took endless drives over the grapevine
with oranges and silence,
you feared for its life.
on its face and crush it.
to love something so much.
on your neighbor's rose bushes.
reading the "Easter Parade"
as a waitress at a restaurant
it had better things to do.
dispatch fleets of messages to God
itself known in daylight.
publish, get rich, publish,
in the backseats of taxis,
with the truth.
the dream had you.
of its plans fell through.
it heard its name being called.
of sticking around long enough to be seen.
who've waited years for its arrival.
don't they, your girls?
and belief in you,
"No maps, no idea where we're headed."
cannot believe this is happening,
hallucinating with fear,
how we became sisters.

Jennifer Murphy is an award-winning writer and performer whose work has been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies. A recipient of the PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Literary Award honoring excellence in multicultural literature, she has performed at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, Knitting Factory and The Nuyorican Poets Café, among other performance venues. Murphy also maintains a parallel career as a private investigator, specializing in online investigations and threat monitoring for high-consequence events.
