ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Raghava KK - Artist
Raghava KK's paintings and drawings use cartoonish shapes and colors to examine the body, society, our world.

Why you should listen

Raghava KK began his career in art as a newspaper cartoonist, and the cartoonist’s bold line -- and dead-on eye for truth -- still powers his art. His work spans painting, sculpture, installation, film and iPad art, always linked by his challenging opinions on identity, conformity, gender, celebrity, ceremony. (He even views his lavish Indian wedding as a piece of performance art.)

His early work as a painter made a complete break with his cartoon career -- he painted watercolors on canvas using only his hands and feet. Since then, his work has grown to knit together aesthetics from both worlds, as collage and complication play against flat color and precise lines. He shows in galleries and performance spaces around the world and often collaborates with other artists, most recently with musicians Paul Simon and Erykah Badu.  In 2011, he launched his children's iPad book, Pop-it, shaking up the concept  of an ideal family. He is currently working on a project that promises to shake up everything! From news to education.

Hi everyone.

2000
Bonjour tout le monde.
00:17
I'm an artist and a dad -- second time around.
1
2000
3000
00:20
Thank you.
2
5000
2000
Merci.
00:22
And I want to share with you my latest art project.
3
7000
3000
00:25
It's a children's book for the iPad.
4
10000
3000
00:28
It's a little quirky and silly.
5
13000
2000
C'est un peu loufoque et bête.
00:30
It's called "Pop-It,"
6
15000
2000
Ça s'appelle "Pop-It",
00:32
And it's about the things little kids do with their parents.
7
17000
3000
00:35
(Music)
8
20000
2000
(Musique)
00:37
So this is about potty training --
9
22000
2000
00:39
as most of you, I hope, know.
10
24000
3000
00:42
You can tickle the rug.
11
27000
2000
On peut chatouiller le tapis.
00:44
You can make the baby poop.
12
29000
2000
On peut faire faire popo au bébé.
00:46
You can do all those fun things.
13
31000
3000
On peut faire toutes ces choses amusantes.
00:50
You can burst bubbles.
14
35000
3000
On peut éclater les bulles.
00:54
You can draw, as everyone should.
15
39000
3000
00:58
But you know, I have a problem with children's books:
16
43000
2000
01:00
I think they're full of propaganda.
17
45000
2000
01:02
At least an Indian trying to get one of these American books in Park Slope, forget it.
18
47000
3000
01:05
It's not the way I was brought up.
19
50000
3000
Ce n'est pas comme ça que j'ai été élevé.
01:08
So I said, "I'm going to counter this with my own propaganda."
20
53000
2000
Donc je me suis dit : "Je vais contrer cela avec ma propre propagande."
01:10
If you notice carefully,
21
55000
2000
Si vous y prêtez attention,
01:12
it's a homosexual couple bringing up a child.
22
57000
3000
01:15
You don't like it?
23
60000
2000
Vous n'aimez pas ?
01:17
Shake it, and you have a lesbian couple.
24
62000
3000
01:20
(Laughter)
25
65000
2000
(Rires)
01:22
Shake it, and you have a heterosexual couple.
26
67000
4000
Secouez, et vous avez un couple hétérosexuel.
01:26
You know, I don't even believe in the concept of an ideal family.
27
71000
3000
01:29
I have to tell you about my childhood.
28
74000
2000
Je dois vous parler de mon enfance.
01:31
I went to this very proper Christian school
29
76000
3000
01:34
taught by nuns, fathers, brothers, sisters.
30
79000
3000
01:37
Basically, I was brought up to be a good Samaritan,
31
82000
2000
01:39
and I am.
32
84000
2000
et je le suis.
01:41
And I'd go at the end of the day to a traditional Hindu house,
33
86000
3000
01:44
which was probably the only Hindu house
34
89000
2000
probablement la seule maison hindoue
01:46
in a predominantly Islamic neighborhood.
35
91000
3000
dans un voisinage principalement musulman.
01:50
Basically, I celebrated every religious function.
36
95000
3000
01:53
In fact, when there was a wedding in our neighborhood,
37
98000
3000
01:56
all of us would paint our houses for the wedding.
38
101000
2000
01:58
I remember we cried profusely
39
103000
2000
Je me souviens combien nous avions pleuré
02:00
when the little goats we played with in the summer
40
105000
2000
02:02
became biriani.
41
107000
2000
sont devenues du biryani.
02:04
(Laughter)
42
109000
2000
(Rires)
02:06
We all had to fast during Ramadan.
43
111000
2000
Nous devions tous jeûner pendant le Ramadan.
02:08
It was a very beautiful time.
44
113000
2000
C'était un moment merveilleux.
02:10
But I must say,
45
115000
2000
Mais je dois dire,
02:12
I'll never forget, when I was 13 years old, this happened.
46
117000
3000
je n’oublierai jamais, quand j’avais 13 ans. Voilà ce qui est arrivé.
02:15
Babri Masjid --
47
120000
2000
Babri Masjid —
02:17
one of the most beautiful mosques in India,
48
122000
2000
une des plus belles mosquées d'Inde,
02:19
built by King Babur, I think, in the 16th century --
49
124000
3000
02:22
was demolished by Hindu activists.
50
127000
2000
a été démolie par les activistes hindous.
02:24
This caused major riots in my city.
51
129000
2000
02:26
And for the first time,
52
131000
2000
Et pour la première fois,
02:28
I was affected
53
133000
2000
j’étais concerné
02:30
by this communal unrest.
54
135000
2000
par cette agitation collective.
02:32
My little five-year-old kid neighbor
55
137000
2000
Mon petit voisin de cinq ans
02:34
comes running in,
56
139000
2000
est venu me voir en courant,
02:36
and he says, "Rags, Rags.
57
141000
3000
et m’a dit : “Rags, Rags.
02:39
You know the Hindus are killing us Muslims. Be careful."
58
144000
3000
Fais attention.”
02:42
I'm like, "Dude, I'm Hindu."
59
147000
2000
Et moi : “Eh petit, je suis Hindou.”
02:44
(Laughter)
60
149000
1000
(Rires)
02:45
He's like, "Huh!"
61
150000
3000
Et lui : “Hah !”
02:48
You know, my work is inspired
62
153000
3000
Mon travail est inspiré
02:51
by events such as this.
63
156000
2000
par les événements comme celui-ci.
02:53
Even in my gallery shows,
64
158000
2000
Même dans mes expositions en galerie,
02:55
I try and revisit historic events
65
160000
2000
j’essaie de revisiter les événements historiques
02:57
like Babri Masjid,
66
162000
2000
comme Babri Masjid,
02:59
distill only its emotional residue
67
164000
2000
j’essaie de condenser son résidu émotionnel
03:01
and image my own life.
68
166000
2000
et de représenter ma propre vie.
03:03
Imagine history being taught differently.
69
168000
2000
Imaginez l’histoire enseignée différemment.
03:05
Remember that children's book
70
170000
1000
Vous vous souvenez du livre pour enfants
03:06
where you shake and the sexuality of the parents change?
71
171000
3000
03:09
I have another idea.
72
174000
1000
J’ai une autre idée.
03:10
It's a children's book about Indian independence --
73
175000
3000
03:13
very patriotic.
74
178000
2000
très patriotique.
03:15
But when you shake it, you get Pakistan's perspective.
75
180000
2000
03:17
Shake it again, and you get the British perspective.
76
182000
3000
03:20
(Applause)
77
185000
5000
(Applaudissements)
03:25
You have to separate fact from bias, right.
78
190000
2000
Il faut séparer les faits des préjugés.
03:27
Even my books on children
79
192000
2000
Même mes bouquins sur les enfants
03:29
have cute, fuzzy animals.
80
194000
2000
ont des animaux mignons et tendres.
03:31
But they're playing geopolitics.
81
196000
2000
Mais ils jouent à la géopolitique.
03:33
They're playing out Israel-Palestine,
82
198000
2000
Ils jouent à faire Israël contre Palestine,
03:35
India-Pakistan.
83
200000
2000
Inde contre Pakistan.
03:37
You know, I'm making a very important argument.
84
202000
2000
03:39
And my argument [is]
85
204000
2000
Et mon point de vue est que
03:41
that the only way for us to teach creativity
86
206000
4000
la seule façon d’enseigner la créativité
03:45
is by teaching children perspectives
87
210000
2000
est d’enseigner aux enfants la perspective
03:47
at the earliest stage.
88
212000
2000
dès le premier âge.
03:49
After all, children's books are manuals on parenting,
89
214000
2000
03:51
so you better give them children's books that teach them perspectives.
90
216000
3000
03:54
And conversely,
91
219000
2000
Et à l'inverse,
03:56
only when you teach perspectives
92
221000
2000
03:58
will a child be able to imagine
93
223000
2000
qu'un enfant sera capable d’imaginer
04:00
and put themselves in the shoes
94
225000
2000
et de se mettre à la place
04:02
of someone who is different from them.
95
227000
2000
de quelqu’un de différent.
04:04
I'm making an argument that art and creativity
96
229000
2000
04:06
are very essential tools in empathy.
97
231000
3000
sont des outils essentiels à l’empathie.
04:09
You know, I can't promise my child
98
234000
2000
04:11
a life without bias --
99
236000
2000
une vie sans préjugé —
04:13
we're all biased --
100
238000
2000
nous en avons tous —
04:15
but I promise to bias my child with multiple perspectives.
101
240000
3000
04:18
Thank you very much.
102
243000
2000
Merci beaucoup.
04:20
