Why you should listen

Fabian Hemmert thinks hard about communicating information in non-visual ways -- through weight, shape, touch, movement. His recent explorations into shape-shifting cell phones are part of a long career of thinking beyond the touchscreen. Along with his shape-shifting mobile phones, his newest work explores haptic feedback in pens. He's a design researcher at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is working on his PhD in Berlin.

His master's thesis is an elegant exploration of the non-visual -- exploring the surprising effects of closing one's eyes during a movie or a first-person shooter game.

2000
kar pomeni, da imam vprašanje.
00:21
how can we make digitaldigitalni contentvsebino graspableajdovskih?
2
6000
3000
Kako lahko digitalne vsebine naredimo oprijemljive?
00:24
Because you see,
3
9000
2000
Kajti
00:26
on the one handroka, there is the digitaldigitalni worldsvet
4
11000
2000
00:28
and no questionvprašanje, manyveliko things are happeningdogaja there right now.
5
13000
3000
se trenutno gotovo dogaja veliko stvari.
00:32
And for us humansljudje, it's not quitečisto materialmaterial, it's not really there --
6
17000
2000
00:34
it's virtualvirtualno.
7
19000
2000
Je virutalen.
00:36
On the other handroka, we humansljudje,
8
21000
2000
Na drugi strani pa ljudje
00:38
we livev živo in a physicalfizično worldsvet.
9
23000
2000
živimo v fizičnem svetu.
00:40
It's richbogat, it tastesokusi good, it feelspočuti good, it smellsdiši good.
10
25000
3000
00:43
So the questionvprašanje is: how do we get the stuffstvari over
11
28000
2000
Vprašanje je: kako digitalni svet
00:45
from the digitaldigitalni into the physicalfizično?
12
30000
2000
prenesti v fizičnega?
00:47
That's my questionvprašanje.
13
32000
2000
To je moje vprašanje.
00:49
If you look at the iPhoneiPhone with its touchdotaknite se
14
34000

in Wii na telesno aktivnost,
00:53
you can see the tendencytežnja; it's gettingpridobivanje physicalfizično.
16
38000
3000
lahko vidite tendenco: prilagaja se fizičnemu svetu.
00:56
The questionvprašanje is: what's nextNaslednji?
17
41000
3000
Vprašanje je: kako naprej?
00:59
Now, I have threetri optionsopcije that I would like to showshow you.
18
44000
3000
01:02
The first one is massmasa.
19
47000
2000
Prvi je masa.
01:04
As humansljudje, we are sensitiveobčutljivo
20
49000
2000
Ljudje občutimo
01:06
to where an objectpredmet in our handroka is heavytežka.
21
51000
2000
težo predmeta v naših rokah.
01:08
So, could we use that in mobilemobilni phonestelefoni?
22
53000
3000
01:11
Let me showshow you the weight-shiftingteža, ki se spreminjajo mobilemobilni.
23
56000
2000
Naj vam pokažem telefon, ki spreminja težo.
01:13
It is a mobilemobilni phone-shapedtelefon v obliki boxškatla
24
58000
2000
To je škatlica v obliki telefona
01:15
that has an ironželezo weighttežo insideznotraj, whichki we can movePremakni se around,
25
60000
3000
01:18
and you can feel where it's heavytežka.
26
63000
2000
Lahko čutimo, kje je škatlica najtežja.
01:20
We shiftpremik the gravitationalgravitacijski centercenter of it.
27
65000
3000
Premikamo njeno gravitacijsko središče.
01:23
For exampleprimer, we can augmentbogatenje digitaldigitalni contentvsebino
28
68000
3000
Na primer, količino digitalne vsebine lahko povečamo
01:26
with physicalfizično massmasa.
29
71000
2000
s fizično maso.
01:28
So you movePremakni se around the contentvsebino on a displayprikaz,
30
73000
2000
Vsebine lahko premikamo po ekranu
01:30
but you can alsotudi feel where it is just from the weighttežo of the devicenaprave.
31
75000
3000
in hkrati čutimo, kje so, zaradi teže naprave.
01:34
AnotherDrugo thing it's good for is navigationnavigacijo --
32
79000
3000
01:37
it can guidevodnik you around in a citymesto.
33
82000
2000
Lahko vas vodi po mestu.
01:39
It can tell you by its weighttežo,
34
84000
2000
Teža vam lahko narekovala:
01:41
"Okay, movePremakni se right. WalkHoje aheadnaprej. Make a left here."
35
86000
3000
"Ok, premakni se desno. Hodi naprej. Tukaj zavij levo."
01:44
And the good thing about that is you don't have to look at the devicenaprave all the time;
36
89000
3000
01:47
you have your eyesoči freeprost to see the citymesto.
37
92000
2000
oči imaš proste za opazovanje mesta.
01:49
Now, massmasa is the first thing;
38
94000
3000
Masa je torej prva stvar.
01:52
the seconddrugič thing, that's shapeobliko.
39
97000
2000
Druga stvar je oblika.
01:54
We're alsotudi sensitiveobčutljivo to the shapeobliko of objectspredmetov we have in [our] handsroke.
40
99000
3000
01:57
So if I downloadprenesi an e-booke-knjige and it has 20 pagesstrani --
41
102000
3000
Če si naložite e-knjigo, ki ima 20 strani --
02:00
well, they could be thintanek, right --
42
105000
2000
lahko so tudi tanke, kajne --
02:02
but if it has 500 pagesstrani, I want to feel that "HarryHarry PotterPotter" --
43
107000
3000
02:05
it's thickdebel. (LaughterSmeh)
44
110000
2000
Debela knjiga.
02:07
So let me showshow you the shape-changingSpreminjanje oblike mobilemobilni.
45
112000
3000
Naj vam pokažem telefon, ki spreminja obliko.
02:10
Again, it's a mobilemobilni phone-shapedtelefon v obliki boxškatla,
46
115000
2000
Zopet imamo škatlico v obliki mobilnega telefona.
02:12
and this one can changesprememba its shapeobliko.
47
117000
2000
Tale lahko spreminja obliko.
02:16
We can playigraj with the shapeobliko itselfsama.
48
121000
2000
Lahko se igramo z obliko.
02:18
For exampleprimer, it can be thintanek in your pocketžep,
49
123000
2000
Na primer, v žepu je lahko tanka,
02:20
whichki we of courseseveda want it to be;
50
125000
2000
saj nam tako najbolj ustreza,
02:22
but then if you holddržite it in your handroka, it can leanvitka towardsproti you, be thickdebel.
51
127000
3000
02:25
It's like taperedstožčasti to the downsidespodaj.
52
130000
2000
spodnji del je tanjši.
02:27
If you changesprememba the graspprijem, it can adjustprilagodite to that.
53
132000
3000
Če spremenimo prijem, se temu prilagodi.
02:31
It's alsotudi usefulkoristno if you want to put it down on your nightstandnočni omarici to watch a moviefilm
54
136000
3000
02:34
or use as an alarmalarm clockura, it standsstojala.
55
139000
3000
ali kot stoječa budilka.
02:37
It's fairlypošteno simplepreprosto.
56
142000
2000
Je precej preprosta.
02:39
AnotherDrugo thing is,
57
144000
2000
Naslednja stvar je,
02:41
sometimesvčasih we watch things on a mobilemobilni phonetelefon,
58
146000
2000
da včasih na mobilnih telefonih gledamo vsebine,
02:43
they are biggervečje than the phonetelefon itselfsama.
59
148000
2000
ki so večje kot sam telefon.
02:45
So in that caseprimera -- like here, there's an appapp that's biggervečje than the phone'stelefon screenzaslon --
60
150000
3000
02:48
the shapeobliko of the phonetelefon could tell you,
61
153000
2000
ti oblika telefona lahko pove,
02:50
"Okay, off the screenzaslon right here, there is more contentvsebino.
62
155000
2000
"Ok, izven ekrana je več vsebine.
02:52
You can't see it, but it's there."
63
157000
2000
Ne vidiš je, ampak je tam."
02:54
And you can feel that because it's thickerdebelejši at that edgerob.
64
159000
3000
02:57
The shapeobliko is the seconddrugič thing.
65
162000
3000
Oblika je druga stvar.
03:00
The thirdtretjino thing operatesdeluje on a differentdrugačen levelravni.
66
165000
3000
03:03
As humansljudje, we are socialsocialno, we are empathicempatično,
67
168000
3000
Ljudje smo socialna bitja, čutimo z drugimi ljudmi
03:06
and that's great.
68
171000
2000
in to je super.
03:08
Wouldn'tNe bi that be a way to make mobilemobilni phonestelefoni more intuitiveintuitiven?
69
173000
3000
03:11
Think of a hamsterhrček in the pocketžep.
70
176000
2000
Pomislite na hrčka v žepu.
03:13
Well, I can feel it, it's doing all right -- I don't have to checkpreveri it.
71
178000
3000
03:16
Let me showshow you the livingživeti mobilemobilni phonetelefon.
72
181000
3000
03:19
So, onceenkrat again, mobilemobilni phone-shapedtelefon v obliki boxškatla,
73
184000
3000
Zopet škatlica v obliki telefona.
03:22
but this one, it has a breathsapo and a heartbeatsrčni utrip,
74

3000
03:25
and it feelspočuti very organicekološko.
75
190000
2000
Občutimo jo kot zelo organsko.
03:27
(LaughterSmeh)

Kot vidite, je trenutno sproščena.
03:31
