ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fabian Hemmert - Designer
Fabian Hemmert studies the theory and philosophy of embodiment, resistance and thinghood.

Why you should listen

Fabian Hemmert thinks hard about communicating information in non-visual ways -- through weight, shape, touch, movement. His recent explorations into shape-shifting cell phones are part of a long career of thinking beyond the touchscreen. Along with his shape-shifting mobile phones, his newest work explores haptic feedback in pens. He's a design researcher at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is working on his PhD in Berlin.

His master's thesis is an elegant exploration of the non-visual -- exploring the surprising effects of closing one's eyes during a movie or a first-person shooter game.

I am a Ph博士.D. student學生

00:19
and that means手段 I have a question:
1
4000
2000
00:21
how can we make digital數字 content內容 graspable可握?
2
6000
3000
00:24
Because you see,
3
9000
2000
00:26
on the one hand, there is the digital數字 world世界
4
11000
2000
00:28
and no question, many許多 things are happening事件 there right now.
5
13000
3000
00:32
And for us humans人類, it's not quite相當 material材料, it's not really there --
6
17000
2000
00:34
it's virtual虛擬.
7
19000
2000
00:36
On the other hand, we humans人類,
8
21000
2000
00:38
we live生活 in a physical物理 world世界.
9
23000
2000
00:40
It's rich豐富, it tastes口味 good, it feels感覺 good, it smells氣味 good.
10
25000
3000
00:43
So the question is: how do we get the stuff東東 over
11
28000
2000
00:45
from the digital數字 into the physical物理?
12
30000
2000
00:47
That's my question.
13
32000
2000
00:49
If you look at the iPhone蘋果手機 with its touch觸摸
14
34000
2000
00:51
and the WiiWii遊戲機 with its bodily身體 activity活動,
15
36000
2000
00:53
you can see the tendency趨勢; it's getting得到 physical物理.
16
38000
3000
00:56
The question is: what's next
17
41000
3000
00:59
Now, I have three options選項 that I would like to show顯示 you.
18
44000
3000
01:02
The first one is mass.
19
47000
2000
01:04
As humans人類, we are sensitive敏感
20
49000
2000
01:06
to where an object目的 in our hand is heavy.
21
51000
2000
01:08
So, could we use that in mobile移動 phones手機?
22
53000
3000
01:11
Let me show顯示 you the weight-shifting重量移 mobile移動.
23
56000
2000
01:13
It is a mobile移動 phone-shaped手機形 box
24
58000
2000
01:15
that has an iron weight重量 inside, which哪一個 we can move移動 around,
25
60000
3000
01:18
and you can feel where it's heavy.
26
63000
2000
01:20
We shift轉移 the gravitational引力 center中央 of it.
27
65000
3000
01:23
For example, we can augment增加 digital數字 content內容
28
68000
3000
01:26
with physical物理 mass.
29
71000
2000
01:28
So you move移動 around the content內容 on a display顯示,
30
73000
2000
01:30
but you can also feel where it is just from the weight重量 of the device設備.
31
75000
3000
01:34
Another另一個 thing it's good for is navigation導航 --
32
79000
3000
01:37
it can guide指南 you around in a city.
33
82000
2000
01:39
It can tell you by its weight重量,
34
84000
2000
01:41
"Okay, move移動 right. Walk步行 ahead. Make a left here."
35
86000
3000
01:44
And the good thing about that is you don't have to look at the device設備 all the time;
36
89000
3000
01:47
you have your eyes眼睛 free自由 to see the city.
37
92000
2000
01:49
Now, mass is the first thing;
38
94000
3000
01:52
the second第二 thing, that's shape形狀.
39
97000
2000
01:54
We're also sensitive敏感 to the shape形狀 of objects對象 we have in [our] hands.
40
99000
3000
01:57
So if I download下載 an e-book電子書 and it has 20 pages網頁 --
41
102000
3000
02:00
well, they could be thin, right --
42
105000
2000
02:02
but if it has 500 pages網頁, I want to feel that "Harry掠奪 Potter製陶工人" --
43
107000
3000
02:05
it's thick. (Laughter笑聲)
44
110000
2000
02:07
So let me show顯示 you the shape-changing形狀改變 mobile移動.
45
112000
3000
02:10
Again, it's a mobile移動 phone-shaped手機形 box,
46
115000
2000
02:12
and this one can change更改 its shape形狀.
47
117000
2000
02:16
We can play with the shape形狀 itself本身.
48
121000
2000
02:18
For example, it can be thin in your pocket
49
123000
2000
02:20
which哪一個 we of course課程 want it to be;
50
125000
2000
02:22
but then if you hold保持 it in your hand, it can lean towards you, be thick.
51
127000
3000
02:25
It's like tapered to the downside
52
130000
2000
02:27
If you change更改 the grasp把握, it can adjust調整 to that.
53
132000
3000
02:31
It's also useful有用 if you want to put it down on your nightstand床頭櫃上 to watch a movie電影
54
136000
3000
02:34
or use as an alarm報警 clock時鐘, it stands站立.
55
139000
3000
02:37
It's fairly相當 simple簡單.
56
142000
2000
02:39
Another另一個 thing is,
57
144000
2000
02:41
sometimes有時 we watch things on a mobile移動 phone電話,
58
146000
2000
02:43
they are bigger than the phone電話 itself本身.
59
148000
2000
02:45
So in that case案件 -- like here, there's an app應用 that's bigger than the phone's手機 screen屏幕 --
60
150000
3000
02:48
the shape形狀 of the phone電話 could tell you,
61
153000
2000
02:50
"Okay, off the screen屏幕 right here, there is more content內容.
62
155000
2000
"在螢幕之外有著更多的資訊.
02:52
You can't see it, but it's there."
63
157000
2000
02:54
And you can feel that because it's thicker更厚的 at that edge邊緣.
64
159000
3000
02:57
The shape形狀 is the second第二 thing.
65
162000
3000
03:00
The third第三 thing operates操作 on a different不同 level水平.
66
165000
3000
03:03
As humans人類, we are social社會, we are empathic感情移入的,
67
168000
3000
03:06
and that's great.
68
171000
2000
03:08
Wouldn't豈不 that be a way to make mobile移動 phones手機 more intuitive直觀的?
69
173000
3000
03:11
Think of a hamster倉鼠 in the pocket口袋.
70
176000
2000
03:13
Well, I can feel it, it's doing all right -- I don't have to check it.
71
178000
3000
03:16
Let me show顯示 you the living活的 mobile移動 phone電話.
72
181000
3000
03:19
So, once一旦 again, mobile移動 phone-shaped手機形 box,
73
184000
3000
03:22
but this one, it has a breath呼吸 and a heartbeat心跳,
74
187000
3000
03:25
and it feels感覺 very organic有機.
75
190000
2000
03:27
(Laughter
76
192000
2000
03:29
And you can tell, it's relaxed輕鬆 right now.
77
194000
2000
03:31
Oh now, missed錯過 call, a new call,
78
196000
2000
03:33
new girlfriend女朋友 maybe --
79
198000
2000
03:38
How do we calm冷靜 it down?
81
203000
2000
03:40
You give it a pat behind背後 the ears耳朵,
82
205000
2000
03:42
and everything is all right again.
83
207000
3000
03:45
So, that's very intuitive直觀的, and that's what we want.
84
210000
2000
03:47
So, what we have seen看到 are three ways方法
85
212000
2000
03:49
to make the digital數字 graspable可握 for us.
86
214000
2000
03:51
And I think making製造 it physical物理
87
216000
2000
03:53
is a good way to do that.
88
218000
2000
03:55
What's behind背後 that is a postulation公設,
89
220000
2000
03:57
namely亦即 that not
90
222000
2000
03:59
humans人類 should get much more technical技術 in the future未來;
91
224000
3000
04:02
rather than that,
92
227000
2000
04:04
technology技術, a bit more human人的.
93
229000
2000
