ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rob Forbes - Designer
Rob Forbes founded Design Within Reach, the furniture company that brought high design to the general public.

Why you should listen

A decade ago, if you wanted to buy a piece of classic modern furniture for your house -- say, a classic Eames chaise longue -- you had basically two options: make friends with a commercial office designer who could order you a piece from the supplier, or wait until your neighborhood psychiatrist redecorated his office and put all the 1960s-vintage Eames chairs out on the curb. Rob Forbes, a potter with a background in retail, saw a market for clean, modern design made available to regular people, and turned this idea into the brilliant nationwide chain and catalog Design Within Reach.

Along with new and classic home goods, DWR became a platform for Forbes' way of seeing. The early-2000-vintage DWR newsletters were packed with colorful images from Forbes' travels and news about designers he loved. And this is not to forget each holiday's annual champagne chair contest -- in which DWR fans were challenged to create a miniature modern masterpiece from the foil, wire and cork of a bottle of bubbly.

In July 2007, Forbes left DWR to focus on a new project, PUBLIC, which designs and sells urban bikes.

02:21
We know a lot about what's going on with design設計 around the world世界,
49
123000
3000
02:24
and it's getting得到 increasingly日益 more difficult
50

I was walking步行 around on the streets街道 of Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹
52

02:31
and I recognized認可, you know, the big story故事
53
133000
2000
02:33
from Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹 isn't what's in the design設計 stores商店,
54
135000
2000
02:35
it's what's out on the streets街道,
55
137000
2000
02:37
and maybe it's self-explanatory不言自明,
56
139000
2000
02:39
but a city that hasn't有沒有 been taken採取 over by modernism現代主義,
57

02:42
that's preserved罐頭 its kind of architecture建築 and character字符,

02:45
and where the bicycle自行車 plays播放 an important重要 part部分 of the way

02:48

61
152000
2000

02:52
And I write a newsletter通訊 that goes out every一切 week,
62
154000
2000
02:54
and I wrote an article文章 about this, and it got such這樣 enormous巨大 response響應
63
156000
3000
02:57
that I realized實現 that design設計, that common共同 design設計,
64
159000
2000
02:59
that's in the public上市 area means手段 a lot to people,
65
161000
3000
03:02
and establishes建立 kind of a groundwork基礎 and a dialog對話.
66
164000
2000
03:04
I then kind of thought about the other cities城市
67
166000
3000
03:07
in Europe歐洲 where I spend a lot of time looking for design設計,
68
169000
3000
03:10
like Basel巴塞爾, where Vitra維特拉 is located位於, or in northern北方 Italy意大利 --
69
172000
4000
03:14
all cities城市 where there are a whole整個 lot of bicycles自行車,
70
176000
2000
03:16
and where pedestrian行人 areas -- and I came來了 to the conclusion結論 that perhaps也許
71
178000
4000
03:20
there was something about these important重要 design設計 centers中心
72
182000
3000
03:23
that dealt處理 with bicycles自行車 and foot腳丫子 traffic交通,
73
185000
2000
03:25
and I'm sure the skeptic懷疑論者 eye would say, no, the correlation相關 there
74
187000
2000
03:27
is that there are universities高校 and schools學校
75
189000
2000
03:29
where people can't afford給予 cars汽車,
76
191000
2000
03:31
but it did seem似乎 that in many許多 of these areas
77
193000
2000
03:33
pedestrian行人 traffic交通 was protected保護.
78
195000
4000
03:37
You wouldn't不會 look at this and call this a designer設計師 bike自行車:
79
199000
3000
03:40
a designer設計師 bike自行車 is made製作 of titanium or molybdenum.
80
202000
2000
03:42
But I began開始 looking at design設計 in a place地點 like Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹
81
204000
3000
03:45
and recognized認可, you know, the first job工作 of design設計
82
207000
2000
03:47
is to serve服務 a social社會 purpose目的.
83
209000
2000
03:49
And so I look at this bike自行車 as not being存在 a designer設計師 bike自行車,
84
211000
4000
03:53
but being存在 a very good example of design設計.
85
215000
3000
03:56
And since以來 that time in Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹, I spent花費 an increasing增加 amount of time
86
218000
3000
03:59
in the cities城市, looking at design設計
87
221000
2000
04:01
for common共同 evidence證據 of design設計
88
223000
2000
04:03
that really isn't under so much of a designer's設計師 signature簽名.
89
225000
3000
04:06
I was in Buenos布宜諾斯艾利斯 Aires布宜諾斯艾利斯 very recently最近,
90
228000
2000
04:08
and I went to see this bridge by Santiago聖地亞哥 Calatrava卡拉特拉瓦.
91
230000
4000
04:12
He's a Spanish西班牙語 architect建築師 and designer設計師.
92
234000
3000
04:15
And the tourist遊客 brochures宣傳冊 pointed me in the direction方向 of this bridge --
93
237000
3000
04:18
I love bridges橋樑, metaphorically比喻 and symbolically象徵 and structurally結構 --
94
240000
3000
04:21
and it was a bit of a disappointment失望,
95
243000
2000
04:23
because of the sludge污泥 from the river was encrusted綴滿 on it; it really wasn't in use.
96
245000
3000
04:26
And I recognized認可 that oftentimes通常情況下 design設計,
97
248000
2000
04:28
when you're set up to see design設計,
98
250000
2000
04:30
it can be a bit of a letdown失望.
99
252000
2000
04:32
But there were lots of other things going on in this area:
100
254000
3000
04:35
it was a kind of construction施工 zone;
101
257000
2000
04:37
a lot of buildings房屋 were going up.
102
259000
2000
04:39
And, approaching接近 a building建造 from a distance距離, you don't see too much;
103
261000
2000
04:41
you get a little closer接近, and you arrive到達 at a nice不錯 little composition組成
104
263000
3000
04:44
that might威力 remind提醒 you of a Mondrian蒙德里安 or a Diebenkorn德本科恩 or something.
105
266000
4000
04:48
But to me it was an example of
106
270000
2000
04:50
industrial產業 materials物料 with a little bit of colors顏色 and animation動畫
107
272000
3000
04:53
and a nice不錯 little still life -- kind of unintended意外 piece of design設計.
108
275000
3000
04:56
And going a little closer接近, you get a different不同 perspective透視.
109
278000
3000
04:59
I find these little vignettes
110
281000
2000
05:01
these little accidental偶然 pieces of design設計,

05:09
and some visual視覺 delight in the knowledge知識
115
291000
3000
05:12
that the building建造 will probably大概 never look as good
116
294000
2000
05:14
as this simple簡單 industrial產業 scaffolding腳手架
117

05:16
that is there to serve服務.
118
298000
2000
05:18
Down the road, there was another另一個 building建造, a nice不錯 visual視覺 structure結構體:
