ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Nicholas Negroponte - Tech visionary
The founder of the MIT Media Lab, Nicholas Negroponte pushed the edge of the information revolution as an inventor, thinker and angel investor. He's the driving force behind One Laptop per Child, building computers for children in the developing world.

Why you should listen

A pioneer in the field of computer-aided design, Negroponte founded (and was the first director of) MIT's Media Lab, which helped drive the multimedia revolution and now houses more than 500 researchers and staff across a broad range of disciplines. An original investor in Wired (and the magazine's "patron saint"), for five years he penned a column exploring the frontiers of technology -- ideas that he expanded into his 1995 best-selling book Being Digital. An angel investor extraordinaire, he's funded more than 40 startups, and served on the boards of companies such as Motorola and Ambient Devices.

But his latest effort, the One Laptop per Child project, may prove his most ambitious. The organization is designing, manufacturing and distributing low-cost, wireless Internet-enabled computers costing roughly $100 and aimed at children. Negroponte hopes to put millions of these devices in the hands of children in the developing world.

In this rather long sort分类 of marathon马拉松 presentation介绍,

4000
00:16
I've tried试着 to break打破 it up into three parts部分:
1
4000
2000
00:18
the first being存在 a whole整个 lot of examples例子 on how it can be
2
6000
5000
00:23
a little bit more pleasurable愉快的 to deal合同 with a computer电脑
3
11000
4000
00:27
and really address地址 the qualities气质 of the human人的 interface接口.
4
15000
3000
00:30
And these will be some simple简单 design设计 qualities气质
5
18000
3000
00:33
and they will also be some qualities气质 of, if you will,
6
21000
3000
00:36
the intelligence情报 of interaction相互作用.
7
24000
2000
00:38
Then the second第二 part部分 will really just be examples例子 of new technologies技术 --
8
26000
4000
00:42
new media媒体 falling落下 very much into that mold模子.
9
30000
4000
00:46
Again, I will go through通过 them as fast快速 as possible可能.
10
34000
3000
00:49
And then the last one will be some examples例子
11
37000
3000
00:52
I've been able能够 to collect搜集, which哪一个 I think
12
40000
4000
00:56
illustrate说明 this at least最小 as best最好 I can, in the world世界 of entertainment娱乐.
13
44000
6000
01:02
People have this belief信仰 -- and I share分享 most of it --
14
50000
6000
01:08
that we will be using运用 the TV电视 screens屏幕 or their equivalents当量
15
56000
4000
01:12
for electronic电子 books图书 of the future未来. But then you think,
16
60000
3000
01:15
"My God! What a terrible可怕 image图片 you get when you look at still pictures图片 on TV电视."
17
63000
5000
01:20
Well, it doesn't have to be terrible
18
68000
2000
01:22
And that is a slide滑动 taken采取 from a TV电视 set
19
70000
4000
01:26
and it was pre-processed预处理 to be very sympathetic有同情心 to the TV电视 medium,
20
74000
4000
01:30
and it absolutely绝对 looks容貌 beautiful美丽.
21
78000
3000
01:33
Well, what's happened发生? How did people get into this mess食堂?
22
81000
6000
01:39
Where you are now, all of a sudden突然,
23
87000
2000
01:41
sitting坐在 in front面前 of personal个人 computers电脑
24
89000
2000
01:47
and somewhat有些 horrified吓坏了 by what you see on the screen屏幕?
26
95000
3000
01:50
Well, you have to remember记得 that TV电视 was designed设计
27
98000
3000
01:53
to be looked看着 at eight times the distance距离 of the diagonal对角线.
28
101000
3000
01:56
So you get a 13-inch-英寸, 19-inch-英寸, whatever随你, TV电视,
29
104000
5000
02:01
and then you should multiply that by eight
30
109000
2000
02:03
and that's the distance距离 you should sit away from the TV电视 set.
31
111000
3000
02:06
Now we've我们已经 put people 18 inches英寸 in front面前 of a TV电视,
32
114000
5000
02:11
and all the artifacts文物 that none没有 of the original原版的 designers设计师 expected预期 to be seen看到,
33
119000
5000
02:16
all of a sudden突然, are staring凝视 you in the face面对:
34
124000
2000
02:18
the shadow阴影 mask面具, the scan扫描 lines线, all of that.
35
126000
3000
02:21
And they can be treated治疗 very easily容易;
36
129000
2000
02:23
there are actually其实 ways方法 of getting得到 rid摆脱 of them,
37
131000
3000
02:26
there are actually其实 ways方法 of just making制造 absolutely绝对 beautiful美丽 pictures图片.
38
134000
6000
02:32
I'm talking here a little bit about display显示 technologies技术.
39
140000
3000
02:35
Let me talk about how you might威力 input输入 information信息.
40
143000
3000
02:38
And my favorite喜爱 example is always fingers手指.
41
146000
4000
02:42
I'm very interested有兴趣 in touch-sensitive触摸感应 displays显示器.
42
150000
2000
Isn't that what some of you said?
43
152000
4000
02:48
It's certainly当然 a very important重要 medium for input输入,
44
156000
7000
02:55
and a lot of people think that fingers手指 are a very low-resolution低分辨率
45
163000
3000
02:58
sort分类 of stylus唱针 for inputting输入 to a display显示.
46
166000
4000
03:02
In fact事实, they're not: it's really a very, very high-resolution高分辨率 input输入 medium --
47
170000
4000
03:06
you have to just do it twice两次, you have to touch触摸 the screen屏幕
48
174000
3000
03:09
and then rotate回转 your finger手指 slightly --
49
177000
3000
03:12
and you can move移动 a cursor光标 with great accuracy准确性.
50
180000
3000
03:15
And so when you see on the market市场 these systems系统
51
183000
2000
03:17
that have just a few少数 light emitting发光 diodes二极管 on the side and are very low resolution解析度,
52
185000
5000
03:22
it's nice不错 that they exist存在 because it still is better than nothing.
53
190000
4000
03:26
But it, in some sense, misses错过 the point:
54
194000
2000
03:28
namely亦即, that fingers手指 are a very, very high-resolution高分辨率 input输入 medium.
55
196000
6000
03:34
Now, what are some of the other advantages优点?
56
202000
2000
03:36
Well, the one advantage优点 is that you don't have to pick them up,
57
204000
4000
03:40
and people don't realize实现 how important重要 that is --
58
208000
4000
03:44
not having to pick up your fingers手指 to use them. (Laughter笑声)
59
212000
3000
03:47
When you think for a second第二 of the mouse老鼠 on Macintosh苹果 --
60
215000
7000
03:54
and I will not criticize批评 the mouse老鼠 too much --
61
222000
4000
03:58
when you're typing打字 -- what you have -- you want to now put something --
62
226000
4000
04:02
first of all, you've got to find the mouse老鼠.
63
230000
2000
04:04
You have to probably大概 stop. Maybe not come to a grinding磨碎 halt,
64
232000
5000
04:09
but you've got to sort分类 of find that mouse老鼠. Then you find the mouse老鼠,
65
237000
3000
04:12
and you're going to have to wiggle摆动 it a little bit
66
240000
2000
04:14
to see where the cursor光标 is on the screen屏幕.
67
242000
2000
04:16
And then when you finally最后 see where it is,
68
244000
2000
04:18
then you've got to move移动 it to get the cursor光标 over there,
69
246000
2000
04:20
and then -- "Bang" -- you've got to hit击中 a button按键 or do whatever随你.
70
248000
3000
04:23
That's four separate分离 steps脚步 versus typing打字 and then touching接触
71
251000
3000
04:26
and typing打字 and just doing it all in one motion运动 --
72
254000
5000
04:31
or one-and-a-half1个半, depending根据 on how you want to count计数.
73
259000
4000
04:35
Again, what I'm trying to do is just illustrate说明
74
263000
2000
04:37
the kinds of problems问题 that I think face面对 the designers设计师
75
265000
4000
04:41
of new computer电脑 systems系统 and entertainment娱乐 systems系统
76
269000
3000
04:47
from the perspective透视 of the quality质量 of that interface接口.
78
275000
3000
04:50
And another另一个 advantage优点, of course课程, of using运用 fingers手指 is you have 10 of them.
79
278000
5000
04:55
And we have never known已知 how to do this technically技术上,
80
283000
3000
04:58
so this slide滑动 is a fake slide滑动.
81
286000
2000
05:00
We never succeeded成功 in using运用 ten fingers手指,
82
288000
3000
05:03
but there are certain某些 things you can do, obviously明显,
83
291000
3000
05:06
with more than one-finger一个手指 input输入, which哪一个 is rather fascinating迷人.
84
294000
5000
05:11
What we did stumble绊倒 across横过 was something ...
85
299000
3000
05:14
Again, which哪一个 is typical典型 of the computer电脑 field领域,
86
302000
3000
05:17
is when you have a bug窃听器 that you can't get rid摆脱 of you turn it into a feature特征.
87
305000
5000
05:22
And maybe ... (Laughter
88
310000
2000
05:24
maybe a mouse老鼠 is a new kind of bug窃听器.
89
312000
4000
05:28
But the bug窃听器 in our case案件 was in touch-sensitive触摸感应 displays显示器:
90
316000
4000
05:32
we wanted to be able能够 to draw -- you know, rub your finger手指
91
320000
4000
05:36
across横过 the screen屏幕 to input输入 continuous连续 points --
92
324000
3000
05:39
and there was just too much friction摩擦
93
327000
2000
05:41
created创建 between之间 your finger手指 and the glass玻璃 --
94
329000
2000
05:43
if glass玻璃 was the substrate基质, which哪一个 it usually平时 is.
95
331000
4000
05:47
So we found发现 that that actually其实 was a feature特征
96
335000
3000
05:50
in the sense you could build建立 a pressure-sensitive压敏 display显示.
97
338000
3000
05:53
And when you touch触摸 it with your finger手指,
98
341000
2000
05:55
you can actually其实, then, introduce介绍 all the forces军队 on the face面对 of that screen屏幕,
99
343000
5000
06:00
and that actually其实 has a certain某些 amount of value.
100
348000
4000
06:04
Let me see if I can load加载 another另一个 disc圆盘
101
352000
2000
06:06
and show显示 you, quickly很快, an example.
102
354000
9000
06:15
Now, imagine想像 a screen屏幕, which哪一个 is not only touch-sensitive触摸感应 now,
103
363000
3000
06:18
it's pressure-sensitive压敏.
104
366000
2000
06:20
And it's pressure-sensitive压敏 to the forces军队 both in the plane平面 of the screen屏幕 --
105
368000
4000
06:24
X, Y, and Z at least最小 in one direction方向;
106
372000
2000
06:26
we couldn't不能 figure数字 out how to come in the other direction方向.
107
374000
4000
06:30
But let me get rid摆脱 of the slide滑动,
108
378000
4000
06:34
and let's see if this comes on.
109
382000
7000
06:41
OK. So there is the pressure-sensitive压敏 display显示 in operation手术.
110
389000
4000
06:45
The person's人的 just, if you will, pushing推动 on the screen屏幕 to make a curve曲线.
111
393000
5000
06:50
But this is the interesting有趣 part部分.
112
398000
2000
06:52
I want to stop it for a second第二
113
400000
4000
06:56
because the movie电影 is very badly made制作.
114
404000
4000
07:00
And the particular特定 display显示 was built内置 about six years年份 ago,
115
408000
3000
07:03
and when we moved移动 from one room房间 to another另一个 room房间,
116
411000
2000
07:05
a rather large person satSAT on it and it got destroyed销毁.
117
413000
4000
07:09
So all we have is this record记录. (Laughter笑声)
118
417000
3000
07:12
But imagine想像 that screen屏幕 having lots of objects对象 on it
119
420000
8000
07:20
and the person has touched感动 an object目的 --
120
428000
3000
07:23
one of N -- like he did there, and then pushed on it.
121
431000
5000
07:28
Now, imagine想像 a program程序
122
436000
2000
07:30
where some of those objects对象 are physically物理 heavy and some are light:
123
438000
4000
07:34
one is an anvil on a fuzzy模糊 rug地毯
124
442000
4000
07:38
and the other one is a ping-pong乒乓 ball on a sheet of glass玻璃.
125
446000
4000
07:42
And when you touch触摸 it, you have to really push very hard
126
450000
4000
07:46
to move移动 that anvil across横过 the screen屏幕,
127
454000
2000
07:48
and yet然而 you touch触摸 the ping-pong乒乓 ball very lightly轻轻
128
456000
3000
07:51
and it just scootsscoots across横过 the screen屏幕.
129
459000
2000
07:53
And what you can do -- oops哎呀, I didn't mean to do that --
130
461000
5000
07:58
what you can do is actually其实 feed饲料 back to the user用户
131
466000
4000
08:02
the feeling感觉 of the physical物理 properties性能.
132
470000
3000
08:05
So again, they don't have to be weight重量;
133
473000
3000
08:08
they could be a general一般 trying to move移动 troops军队,
134
476000
3000
08:11
and he's got to move移动 an aircraft飞机 carrier支架 versus a little boat.
135
479000
4000
08:15
In fact事实, they funded资助 it for that very reason原因.
136
483000
3000
08:18
(Laughter
137
486000
4000
08:22
The whole整个 notion概念, then, is one that at the interface接口
138
490000
6000
08:28
there are physical物理 properties性能 in that transducer传感器 --
139
496000
4000
08:32
in this case案件 it's pressure压力 and touches触摸 --
140
500000
2000
08:34
that allow允许 you to present当下 things to the user用户 that you could never present当下 before.
141
502000
4000
08:38
So it's not simply只是 looking at the quality质量 or, if you will, the luxury豪华 of that interface接口,
142
506000
5000
08:43
but it's actually其实 looking at the idea理念
143
511000
2000
08:45
of presenting呈现 things that previously先前 couldn't不能 be presented呈现 before.
144
513000
3000
08:48
I want to move移动 on to another另一个 example,
145
516000
4000
08:52
which哪一个 is one of a different不同 sort分类, where we're trying to use computer电脑
146
520000
6000
08:58
and video视频 disc圆盘 technology技术 now to come up with a new kind of book.
147
526000
5000
09:03
Here, the idea理念 is that you're going to take this book,
148
531000
5000
09:08
if you will, and it's going to come alive.
149
536000
2000
09:10
You're going to sort分类 of breathe呼吸 life into it.
150
538000
3000
09:13
We are so used to doing monologues独白.
151
541000
4000
09:17
Filmmakers制片人, for example, are the experts专家 in monologue独白 making制造:
152
545000
4000
09:21
you make a film电影 and it has a well-formed合式 beginning开始, middle中间 and end结束,
153
549000
3000
09:24
and in some sense the art艺术 of it is that.
154
552000
3000
09:27
And you then say, "There's an opportunity机会
155
555000
4000
Well, what does that mean?
156
559000
4000
09:35
And it sort分类 of nibbles半字节 at the core核心 of the whole整个 profession职业
157
563000
6000
09:41
and all the assumptions假设 of that medium.
158
569000
2000
09:43
So, book writing写作 is the same相同 thing.
159
571000
3000
09:46
What I'll show显示 you very quickly很快 is a new kind of book
160
574000
3000
09:49
where it is mixed now with ... all sorts排序 of things live生活 in there,
161
577000
4000
09:53
but you have to keep a few少数 things in mind心神.
162
581000
3000
09:56
One is that this book knows知道 about itself本身.
163
584000
5000
10:01
Each frame of the movie电影 has information信息 about itself本身.
164
589000
6000
10:07
So it knows知道, or at least最小 there is computer-readable计算机可读 information信息
165
595000
5000
10:12
in the medium itself本身. It's just not a static静态的 movie电影 frame.
166
600000
4000
10:16
That's one thing. The other is that you have to realize实现
167
604000
2000
10:18
that it is a random随机 access访问 medium,
168
606000
3000
10:21
and you can, in fact事实, branch and expand扩大 and elaborate阐述 and shrink收缩.
169
609000
3000
10:24
And here -- again, my favorite喜爱 example -- is the cookbook食谱,
170
612000
4000
10:28
the "Larousse拉鲁斯 GastronomiqueGastronomique."
171
616000
3000
the Larousse Gastronomique(烹饪艺术著作)
10:31
And I think I use the example all too often经常,
172
619000
3000
10:34
but it's a great one because there is a classic经典 ending结尾 in that little
173
622000
5000
10:39
encyclopedia-style百科全书式 cookbook食谱 that tells告诉 you how to do something like penguin企鹅,
174
627000
7000
10:46
and you get to the end结束 of the recipe食谱 and it says, "Cook厨师 until直到 doneDONE."
175
634000
4000
10:50
Now, that would be, if you will, the top最佳 green绿色 track跟踪,
176
638000
5000
10:55
which哪一个 doesn't mean too much. But you might威力 have to elaborate阐述 for me
177
643000
4000
10:59
or for somebody who isn't an expert专家, and say,
178
647000
2000
11:01
"Cook厨师 at 380 degrees for 45 minutes分钟."
179
649000
2000
11:03
And then for a real真实 beginner初学者, you would go down even further进一步
180
651000
3000
11:06
and elaborate阐述 more -- say, "Open打开 the oven烤箱, preheat预热, wait for the light to go out,
181
654000
4000
11:10
open打开 the door, don't leave离开 it open打开 too long,
182
658000
3000
11:13
put the penguin企鹅 in and shut关闭 the door ..."
11:16
And that's a much more elaborate阐述 one than you dribble运球 back.
184
664000
3000
11:19
That's one kind of use of random随机 access访问.
185
667000
5000
11:24
And the other is where you want to explain说明 the same相同 thing in different不同 ways方法.
186
672000
8000
11:32
If you're in a classroom课堂 situation情况 and somebody asks a question,
187
680000
4000
11:36
the last thing you do is repeat重复 what you just said.
188
684000
3000
11:39
You try and think of a different不同 way of saying the same相同 thing,
189
687000
4000
11:43
or if you know the particular特定 student学生 and that student's学生们 cognitive认知 style样式,
190
691000
5000
11:48
then you might威力 say it in a way that you think
191
696000
2000
11:50
would have a good impedance阻抗 match比赛 with that student学生.
192
698000
3000
11:53
There are all sorts排序 of techniques技术 you will use --
193
701000
2000
11:55
and again, this is a different不同 kind of branching分枝.
194
703000
4000
11:59
So, what I will show显示 you is ... it's a rather boring无聊 book,
195
707000
6000
12:05
but I'm afraid害怕 sometimes有时 you have to do boring无聊 books图书
196
713000
3000
12:08
because your sponsors赞助商 aren't necessarily一定 interested有兴趣 in fiction小说
197
716000
5000
12:13
and entertainment娱乐. And this is a book on how to repair修理 a transmission传输.
198
721000
6000
12:19
Now, I don't even know what vintage酿酒 the transmission传输 is,
199
727000
3000
12:22
but let me just show显示 you very quickly很快 some of it, and we'll move移动 on.
200
730000
5000
12:33
(Video视频) Narrator旁白: And continue继续 to get descriptions说明 for each of these chapters.
201
741000
3000
12:36
Now, this is his table of contents内容.
202
744000
2000
12:38
Just a picture图片 of the transmission传输, and as you rub your finger手指 across横过 the transmission传输
203
746000
4000
12:42
it highlights强调 the various各个 parts部分.
204
750000
3000
12:45
Narrator旁白: When I find a chapter章节 that I want to see,

12:59
The words or phrases短语 that are lit发光的 up in red are glossary词汇表 words,
207

13:05
so I can get a different不同 definition定义 by just touching接触 the word,

13:44
This is relatively相对 important重要 because it sets the page ...
211

13:48
Narrator旁白: This is another另一个 example of a page with glossary词汇表 words
212
816000
5000

14:13
but it's actually其实 a movie电影 of someone有人 coming未来 into the frame and doing the repair修理
217
841000
3000
14:16
that's described描述 in the text文本.
218
844000
3000
14:19
The two-headed双头 slider滑块 is a speed速度 control控制 that allows允许 me to watch the movie电影
219
847000

222
859000
18000
14:49
Here's这里的 another另一个 step-by-step一步步 procedure程序, only in this case案件 --
223
877000
2000
14:51
NNNN: Okay, this movie电影 is ...

15:18
(Laughter
230
906000
5000
15:23
OK. I'm at the third第三 and last part部分 of this,
231
911000
5000
15:28
which哪一个 I said I would make an attempt尝试 to at least最小 give you some examples例子
232
916000
4000
15:32
that may可能 be more directly related有关 to the world世界 of entertainment娱乐.
233
920000
4000
15:36
And of course课程, good education教育 has got to be good entertainment娱乐,
234
924000
5000
15:41
so my first example will be drawn from a very recent最近 experiment实验
235
929000
7000
15:48
that we've我们已经 been doing -- in this case案件, in Senegal塞内加尔 --

15:56
as a pedagogical教学 medium. But not as teaching教学 machines at all;
238
944000
5000
16:01
the whole整个 notion概念 is to use this as an instrument仪器
239
949000
4000
16:05
where there is a complete完成 reversal翻转 of roles角色 --
240
953000
3000
16:08
the child儿童 is, if you will, the teacher老师 and the machine is the student学生 --
241
956000
4000
16:12
and the art艺术 of computer电脑 programming程序设计 is a vehicle车辆 that sort分类 of

16:14
approximates接近 thinking思维 about thinking思维.
243
962000
3000
16:17
But teaching教学 kids孩子 programming程序设计 per seSE is utterly完全 irrelevant不相干.
244
965000
5000
16:22
And there are just a few少数 slides幻灯片 I want to go through通过,
245
970000
3000
16:25
but there's a story故事 I'd like to tell. And that was when,
246
973000
6000
16:31
before we did this in any developing发展 countries国家 --
247
979000

16:37
we did it in some pretty漂亮 rough areas of New York纽约 City.
250

16:42
And one child儿童, whose谁的 name名称 I've forgotten忘记了, was about seven or eight years年份 old,

17:03
But did hang around the, quote引用, "computer电脑 room房间,"

17:06
where there were quite相当 a few少数 computers电脑,

17:08
and learned学到了 this particular特定 language语言 called Logo商标 --

17:15
it was very interesting有趣. And one day, by chance机会,
259

17:20
some visitors游客 from the NIE came来了 by in their double-breasted双排扣 suits西装

17:47
until直到 they asked him how to do something which哪一个 he couldn't不能 explain说明
266
1055000
4000
17:51
and so he flipped翻转 through通过 the manual手册, found发现 the explanation说明
267
1059000
3000
17:54
and typed类型 the command命令 and got it to do what they asked.
268
1062000
2000
17:56
They were delighted欣喜的, and by the time it was time to go see the principal主要,
269
1064000
4000
18:00
whom they'd他们会 actually其实 come to see -- not the computer电脑 room房间 --
270
1068000
3000
18:03
they went upstairs楼上 and they said,
271
1071000
1000
18:04
"This is absolutely绝对 remarkable卓越!
272
1072000
2000
18:06
That child儿童 was very articulate说出 and showed显示 us
273
1074000
4000
18:10
and even dealt处理 with the things he couldn't不能 do automatically自动
274
1078000
4000
18:14
with that manual手册. It was just absolutely绝对 fantastic奇妙."
275
1082000
4000
18:18
The principal主要 said, "There's a dreadful可怕 mistake错误,
276
1086000
3000
18:21
because that child儿童 can't read.
277
1089000
2000
18:23
And you obviously明显 have been hoodwinked忽悠
278
1091000
2000
18:25
or you've talked about somebody else其他."
279
1093000
3000
18:28
And they all got up and they all went downstairs楼下
280
1096000
2000
18:30
and the child儿童 was still there. And they did something very intelligent智能:
281
1098000
4000
18:34
they asked the child儿童, "Can you read?"
282
1102000
4000
18:38
And the child儿童 said, "No, I can't."
283
1106000
3000
18:41
And then they said, "But wait a minute分钟. You
284
1109000
2000
18:43
just looked看着 through通过 that manual手册 and you found发现 ... "
285
1111000
3000
18:46
and he said, "Oh, but that's not reading."
286
1114000
3000
18:49
And so they said, "Well, what's reading then?"
287
1117000
2000
18:51
He says, "Well, reading is this junk破烂 they give me in little books图书 to read.
288
1119000
4000
18:55
It's absolutely绝对 irrelevant不相干, (Laughter笑声) and I get nothing for it.
289
1123000
7000
19:02
But here, with a little bit of effort功夫 I get a lot of return返回."
290
1130000
4000
19:06
And it really meant意味着 something to the child儿童.
291
1134000
2000
19:08
The child儿童 read beautifully精美, it turned转身 out,
292
1136000
2000
19:10
and was really very competent胜任. So it actually其实 meant意味着 something.
293
1138000
4000
19:14
And that story故事 has many许多 other anecdotes轶事 that are similar类似,
294
1142000
5000
19:19
but wow. The key to the future未来 of computers电脑 in education教育 is right there,
295
1147000
7000
19:26
and it is: when does it mean something to a child儿童?
296
1154000
3000
19:29
There is a myth神话, and it truly is a myth神话:
297
1157000
3000
19:32
we believe -- and I'm sure a lot of you believe in this room房间 --
298
1160000
3000
19:35
that it is harder更难 to read and write than it is to learn学习 how to speak说话.
299
1163000
5000
19:40
And it's not, but we think speech言语 -- "My God, little children孩子 pick it up somehow不知何故,
300
1168000
6000
19:46
and by the age年龄 of two they're doing a mediocre平庸 job工作,
301
1174000
2000
19:48
and by three and four they're speaking请讲 reasonably合理 well.
302
1176000
3000
19:51
And yet然而 you've got to go to school学校 to learn学习 how to read,
303
1179000
2000
19:53
and you have to sit in a classroom课堂 and somebody has to teach you.
304
1181000
3000
19:56
Hence于是, it must必须 be harder更难." Well, it's not harder更难.
305
1184000
3000
19:59
What the truth真相 is is that speaking请讲 has great value to a child儿童;
306
1187000
7000
20:06
the child儿童 can get a great deal合同 by talking to you.
307
1194000
3000
20:09
Reading and writing写作 is utterly完全 useless无用.
308
1197000
2000
20:11
There is no reason原因 for a child儿童 to read and write except blind faith信仰,
309
1199000
5000
20:16
and that it's going to help you. (Laughter笑声)
310
1204000
3000
20:19
So what happens发生 is you go to school学校 and people say,
311
1207000
3000
20:22
"Just believe me, you're going to like it.
312
1210000
3000
20:25
You're going to like reading," and just read and read.
313
1213000
3000
20:28
On the other hand, you give a kid孩子 -- a three-year-old三十岁 kid孩子 -- a computer电脑
314
1216000
4000
20:32
and they type类型 a little command命令 and -- Poof! -- something happens发生.
315
1220000
3000
20:35
And all of a sudden突然 ... You may可能 not call that reading and writing写作,
316
1223000
3000
20:38
but a certain某些 bit of typing打字 and reading stuff东东 on the screen屏幕
317
1226000
3000
20:41
has a huge巨大 payoff付清, and it's a lot of fun开玩笑.
318
1229000
3000
20:44
And in fact事实, it's a powerful强大 educational教育性 instrument仪器.
319
1232000
4000
20:48
Well, in Senegal塞内加尔 we found发现 that this was the traditional传统 classroom课堂:
320
1236000
5000
20:53
120 kids孩子 -- three per desk -- one teacher老师, a little bit of chalk粉笔.
321
1241000
5000
20:58
This student学生 was one of our first students学生们,
322
1246000
3000
21:01
and it's the girl女孩 on the left leaning with her chalkboard黑板,
323
1249000
4000
21:05
and she came来了 ... within two days --
324
1253000
3000
21:08
I want to show显示 you the program程序 she wrote,
325
1256000
2000
21:10
and remember记得 her hairstyle发型. And that is the program程序 she made制作.
326
1258000
6000
21:16
That's what meant意味着 something to her, is doing the hair头发 pattern模式,
327
1264000
4000
21:20
and actually其实 did it within two days -- an hour小时 each day --
328
1268000
5000
21:25
and found发现 it was, to her,
329
1273000
2000
21:27
absolutely绝对 the most meaningful富有意义的 piece ...
330
1275000
3000
21:30
But rooted in that, little did she know how much knowledge知识
331
1278000
4000
21:34
she was acquiring收购 about geometry几何
332
1282000
2000
21:36
and just math数学 and logic逻辑 and all the rest休息.
333
1284000
3000
21:39
And again, I could talk for three hours小时 about this subject学科.
334
1287000
3000
21:42
I will come to my last example and then quit
335
1290000
8000
21:50
And my last example -- as some of my former前任的 colleagues同事,
336
1298000
6000
21:56
whom I see in the room房间, can imagine想像 what it will be.
337
1304000
3000
21:59
Yes, it is. It's our work -- that was a while ago,
338
1307000
3000
22:02
and it still is my favorite喜爱 project项目 -- of teleconferencing电话会议.
339
1310000
4000
22:06
And the reason原因 it remains遗迹 a favorite喜爱 project项目
340
1314000
2000
22:08
is that we were asked to do a teleconferencing电话会议 system系统
341
1316000
7000
22:15
where you had the following以下 situation情况:
342
1323000
2000
22:17
you had five people at five different不同 sites网站 -- they were known已知 people --
343
1325000
5000
22:22
and you had to have these people in teleconference电话会议,
344
1330000
5000
22:27
such这样 that each one was utterly完全 convinced相信
345
1335000
3000
22:30
that the other four were physically物理 present当下.
346
1338000
4000
22:34
Now, that is sufficiently充分地
347
1342000
4000
22:38
zany滑稽的 that we would, obviously明显, jump to the bait, and we did.
348
1346000
5000
22:43
And the fact事实 that we knew知道 the people --
349
1351000
3000
22:46
we had to take a page out of the history历史 of Walt沃尔特 Disney迪士尼 --
350
1354000
3000
22:49
we actually其实 went so far as to build建立 CRTsCRT显示器
351
1357000
3000
22:52
in the shapes形状 of the people's人们 faces面孔.
352
1360000
3000
22:55
So if I wanted to call my friend朋友 Peter彼得 Sprague斯普拉格 on the phone电话,
353
1363000
5000
23:00
my secretary秘书 would get his head out and bring带来 it and set it on the desk,
354
1368000
3000
23:03
(Laughter
355
1371000
1000
23:04
and that would be the TV电视 used for the occasion场合.
356
1372000
5000
23:09
And it's uncanny神秘的: there's no way I can explain说明 to you
357
1377000
3000
23:12
the amount of eye contact联系 you get with that physical物理 face面对
358
1380000
4000
23:16
projected预计 on a 3D CRTCRT of that sort分类.
359
1384000
4000
23:20
The next下一个 thing that we had to do is to persuade说服 them
360
1388000
3000
23:23
that there needed需要 to be spatial空间的 correspondence对应, which哪一个 is straightforward直截了当,
361
1391000
4000
23:27
but again, it's something that didn't fall秋季 naturally自然
362
1395000
2000
23:29
out of a telecommunications电信 or computing计算 style样式 of thinking思维;
363
1397000
3000
23:32
it was a very, if you will, architectural建筑的 or spatial空间的 concept概念.
364
1400000
4000
23:36
And that was to recognize认识 that when you sit around the table,
365
1404000
3000
23:39
the actual实际 location位置 of the people becomes rather important重要.
366
1407000
5000
23:44
And when somebody gets得到 up, in fact事实, to go answer回答 a phone电话
367
1412000
3000
23:47
or use a bathroom浴室 or something, the empty seat座位 becomes,
368
1415000
3000
23:50
if you will, that person. And you point frequently经常 to the empty seat座位
369
1418000
3000
23:53
and you say, "He or she wouldn't不会 agree同意,"
370
1421000
3000
23:56
and the empty chair椅子 is that person and the spatiality空间性 is crucial关键.
371
1424000
6000
24:02
So we said, "Well, these will be on round回合 tables
372
1430000
3000
24:05
and the order订购 around the table had to be the same相同,
373
1433000
3000
24:08
so that at my site现场, I would be, if you will, real真实
374
1436000
3000
24:11
and then at each other's其他 site现场 you'd have these plastic塑料 heads.
375
1439000
5000
24:16
And the plastic塑料 heads, sometimes有时 you want to project项目 them.
376
1444000
4000
24:20
And there are a number of schemes方案, which哪一个 I don't want to dwell on,
377
1448000
3000
24:23
but this is the one that we finally最后 used
378
1451000
2000
24:25
where we projected预计 onto rear screen屏幕 material材料
379
1453000
4000
24:29
that was molded成型 in the face面对 -- literally按照字面 in the face面对 of the person.
380
1457000
4000
24:33
And I'll show显示 you one more slide滑动, where this is actually其实 made制作
381
1461000
4000
24:37
from something called a solid固体 photograph照片 and is the screen屏幕.
382
1465000
4000
24:41
Now, we track跟踪, on the person's人的 head, the head motions运动 --
383
1469000
3000
24:44
so we transmit发送 with a video视频 the head positions位置 --
384
1472000
4000
24:48
and so this head moves移动 in about two axes.
385
1476000
7000
24:55
So if I, all of a sudden突然, turn to the person to my left
386
1483000
5000
25:00
and start开始 talking to that person, then at the person to my right's正确的是 site现场,
387
1488000
5000
25:05
he'll地狱 see these two plastic塑料 heads talking to each other.
388
1493000
3000
25:08
And then if that person interrupts中断, then those two heads may可能 turn.
389
1496000
5000
25:13
And it really is reconstructing重建, quite相当 accurately准确, teleconferencing电话会议.
390
1501000
5000
