ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Péter Fankhauser - Roboticist
Péter Fankhauser is the leader of a team of students working on Rezero, a robot that balances on a single sphere.

Why you should listen

Mechanical engineer Péter Fankhauser is leading a large team of student engineers and designers at the Swiss federal institute of technology in Zurich who are building a robot that balances and drives on a single sphere. Other roboticists have explored this idea, of stabilizing a robot on a ball, but what Fankhauser and his fellow students hoped to do was make it dance. “Adding dynamics was definitely one of our goals,” he says.

Working with researchers including Michael Neunert and Thomas Kammermann,  the team has produced Rezero, a ballbot prototype that can slalom around, resist toppling up to 17 degrees off vertical, and inspire myriad uses. Designed for high acceleration, it moves in an organic and even elegant way.  Fankhauser has started graduate studies in mechanical engineering this fall with a focus on robotics, control and construction.

He says of Rezero: "He wants to demonstrate what he can do, as if he was saying, ‘Backwards, forwards. I can do it all. Look at me!'"

2000
O noso robot pertence a unha familia de robots
00:29
called Ballbots.
6
14000
2000
chamados bólabots.
00:31
Instead of wheels, a Ballbot is balancing
7
16000
2000
No canto de rodas, o Bólabot sostense
00:33
and moving on one single ball.
8
18000
2000
e móvese sobre unha soa bóla.
00:35
The main characteristics of such a system is
9
20000
2000
A principal característica de tal sistema é
00:37
that there's one sole contact point to the ground.
10
22000
3000
que hai un único punto de contacto co chan.
00:40
This means that the robot
11
25000
2000
Isto significa que o robot
00:42
is inherently unstable.
12
27000
2000
é inherentemente inestable.
00:44
It's like when I am trying to stand
13
29000
2000
É coma cando eu intento sosterme
00:46
on one foot.
14
31000
1000
sobre un pé.
00:47
You might ask yourself, what's the usefulness
15
32000
2000
Preguntarédesvos, cal é a utilidade
00:49
of a robot that's unstable?
16
34000
2000
dun robot inestable?
00:51
Now we'll explain that in a second.
17
36000
2000
Imos a o explicar nun segundo.
00:53
Let me first explain how Rezero
18
38000
2000
Primeiro, explicareivos como mantén
00:55
actually keeps his balance.
19
40000
2000
o equilibrio Rezero.
00:57
Rezero keeps his balance by constantly
20
42000
2000
Rezero mantén o equilibrio medindo
00:59
measuring his pitch angle with a sensor.
21
44000
3000
constantemente o seu ángulo de cabeceo cun sensor.
01:02
He then counteracts and avoids toppling over
22
47000
3000
Logo contrarresta e evita perder o equilibrio
01:05
by turning the motors appropriately.
23
50000
2000
xirando os motores adecuadamente.
01:07
This happens 160 times per second,
24
52000
2000
Isto ocorre 160 veces por segundo
01:09
and if anything fails in this process,
25
54000
2000
e se falla algo neste proceso,
01:11
Rezero would immediately fall to the ground.
26
56000
3000
Rezero caería inmediatamente ao chan.
01:14
Now to move and to balance,
27
59000
2000
Para moverse e manter o equilibrio,
01:16
Rezero needs to turn the ball.
28
61000
2000
Rezero precisa xirar a bóla.
01:18
The ball is driven by three special wheels
29
63000
2000
A bóla está dirixida por tres rodas especiais
01:20
that allow Rezero to move into any direction
30
65000
3000
que lle permiten moverse en calquera dirección
01:23
and also move around his own axis
31
68000
2000
e tamén moverse sobre o seu eixe
01:25
at the same time.
32
70000
4000
ao mesmo tempo.
01:29
Due to his instability, Rezero is always
33
74000
2000
Dada a súa inestabilidade, Rezero está sempre
01:31
in motion. Now here's the trick.
34
76000
2000
en movemento. Velaquí o truco.
01:33
It's indeed exactly this instability that allows
35
78000
3000
É precisamente esta inestabilidade a que lle permite
01:36
a robot to move very [dynamically].
36
81000
2000
a un robot moverse moi dinamicamente.
01:38
Let's play a little.
37
83000
2000
Xoguemos un pouco.
01:40
You may have wondered what happens
38
85000
2000
Preguntarédesvos que pasa
01:42
if I give the robot a little push.
39
87000
3000
se lle dou un empuxonciño ao robot.
01:47
In this mode, he's trying to maintain
40
92000
2000
Neste modo, está intentando manter
01:49
his position.
41
94000
3000
a súa posición.
01:52
For the next demo, I'd like you to introduce
42
97000
3000
Para a seguinte demostración, preséntovos
01:55
to my colleagues Michael, on the computer,
43
100000
3000
aos meus colegas Michael, na computadora
01:58
and Thomas who's helping me onstage.
44
103000
3000
e Thomas, quen me axuda no escenario.
02:02
In the next mode, Rezero is passive,
45
107000
2000
No seguinte modo, Rezero é pasivo
02:04
and we can move him around.
46
109000
3000
e o podemos mover darredor.
02:08
With almost no force I can control
47
113000
2000
Sen case forza, podo controlar
02:10
his position and his velocity.
48
115000
3000
a súa posición e velocidade.
02:16
I can also make him spin.
49
121000
3000
Tamén o podo facer xirar.
02:30
In the next mode, we can get Rezero
50
135000
2000
No seguinte modo, podemos facer
02:32
to follow a person.
51
137000
3000
que siga a unha persoa.
02:35
He's now keeping a constant distance to Thomas.
52
140000
3000
Agora mantén unha distancia constante con Thomas.
02:42
This works with a laser sensor
53
147000
2000
Funciona cun sensor láser
02:44
that's mounted on top of Rezero.
54
149000
2000
montado na parte de arriba de Rezero.
02:50
With the same method, we can also
55
155000
2000
Co mesmo método, tamén podemos
02:52
get him to circle a person.
56
157000
3000
facer que rodee a unha persoa.
02:57
We call this the orbiting mode.
57
162000
4000
Chamámolo o modo orbital.
03:10
All right, thank you, Thomas.
58
175000
2000
Moi ben, grazas, Thomas.
03:12
(Applause)
59
177000
4000
(aplausos)
03:16
Now, what's the use of this technology?
60
181000
3000
Entón, cal é o uso desta tecnoloxía?
03:22
For now, it's an experiment, but let me
61
187000
2000
Por agora é un experimento, pero deixádeme
03:24
show you some possible future applications.
62
189000
3000
amosarvos algunhas aplicacións futuras.
03:28
Rezero could be used in exhibitions or parks.
63

Rezero podería usarse en exposicións ou parques.
03:30
With a screen it could inform people or show
64

03:49
And these are more practical applications.
72
214000
2000
Estas son aplicacións máis prácticas.
03:51
But there's also a certain beauty
73
216000
2000
Pero tamén hay unha certa beleza
