ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Hadi Eldebek - Musician, educator, entrepreneur
TED Resident Hadi Eldebek is a musician, educator and entrepreneur who creates artistic, cultural, and educational projects around the world.

Why you should listen

After completing his undergraduate studies in math and chemistry, Hadi Eldebek enrolled in a master's program in industrial engineering before he decided to focus on music, culture, and entrepreneurship. His choice was encountered by doubts about how he was going to make it as an artist.

When Eldebek was awarded a music grant in 2015, he started to explore how to make funding opportunities more accessible to artists around the world, sparking grantPA -- a platform that connects artists and organizations to funding and professional development opportunities.

Eldebek's collaborations with pioneers in the world of arts, culture and education, including Yo-Yo Ma's SilkRoad Ensemble, Disney World Imagineering and Harvard Graduate School of Education have equipped him with a valuable mindset and powerful insights that led him into the creation of numerous projects. He often tours as a musician and a panelist. He was recently a TED Resident, where he co-developed grantPA and Circle World Arts with his brother, Mohamad Eldebek, into ideas worth spreading.

A arte dálle sentido ás nosas vidas e espírito á nosa cultura.

They were worried.

Estaban preocupados.
01:18
They thought it would be difficult
to make it as an artist,
24
66960
3536
Pensaban que ía ser difícil
que triunfara como artista,
01:22
that it will be a challenge.
25
70520
2496
que ía ser un reto.
01:25
And you know what? They were right.
26
73040
2240
E sabedes que? Tiñan razón.
01:28
It is such a challenge
to be a full-time artist.
27
76240
2736
É un reto moi grande
ser artista a xornada completa.
01:31
I have so many friends
who need to have a second job
28
79000
3376
Teño moitos amigos
que precisan dun segundo emprego
01:34
as a plan B in order to pay for the bills,
29

como plan B para pagaren as facturas,
01:36
except that plan B
sometimes becomes their plan A.
30

só que ese plan B convértese
as veces no seu plan A.
01:41
And it's not just my friends and I
who experience this.

The US Census Bureau states that only
10 percent of art school graduates
32
93240
4936
O US Census Bureau di que só
o 10 por cento dos graduados en artes
01:50
end up working as full-time artists.
33
98200
3096
acaban traballando
como artistas a xornada completa.
01:53
The other 90 percent, they change careers,
34
101320
2456
O outro 90 por cento cambia de carreira,
01:55
they work in marketing,
sales, education and other fields.
35
103800
3720
traballan en mercadotecnia, vendas,
educación e outros campos.
02:00
But this is not news, right?
36
108160
2456
Pero isto non é unha novidade, non si?
02:02
We almost expect the artist
to be a struggling artist.
37
110640
3400
Case se espera que o artista
sexa un artista en apuros.
02:06
But why should we expect that?
38
114960
1840
Pero, por que deberíamos esperar iso?
02:10
I read an article in the "Huffington Post"
39
118680
2256
Lin un artigo no Huffington Post
02:12
saying that four years ago,
the European Union
40
120960
3016
que dicía que hai catro anos
a Unión Europea
02:16
began the world's largest ever
arts funding initiative.
41
124000
3496
impulsou a maior iniciativa mundial
de financiamento das artes.
02:19
Creative Europe
will give 2.4 billion dollars
42
127520
3616
Europa Creativa dará case
2.000 millóns de euros
02:23
to over 300,000 artists.
43
131160
2680
a máis de 300.000 artistas.
02:26
In contrast, the US budget
for our National Endowment for the Arts,
44
134520
5456
Pola contra, o orzamento dos EE. UU.
para o National Endowment for the Arts,
02:32
the largest single funder
for the arts across the United States,
45
140000
3936
o patrocinador das artes
máis grande do país,
02:35
is merely 146 million dollars.
46
143960
3816
é de só 118 millóns de euros.
02:39
To put things into perspective,
47
147800
2136
Para poñer a cifra en perspectiva,
02:41
the US budget for the military
marching bands alone
48
149960
4136
soamente o orzamento norteamericano
para bandas de música militares
02:46
is almost twice as much as the entire NEA.
49
154120
3360
é case o dobre do que ten toda a NEA.
02:51
Another striking image comes from
Brendan McMahon for the "Huffington Post,"
50
159560
4536
Outro dato que chama a atención
dáo Brendan MacMahon no Huffington Post,
02:56
saying that out of
the one trillion dollar budget
51
164120
3096
quen di que se do orzamento
de 800.000 millóns de euros
02:59
for military and defense-related spending,
52
167240
2816
que se destina
a gastos militares e de defensa,
03:02
if only 0.05 percent
were allocated to the arts,
53
170080
4376
destinásemos só o 0,05 por cento ás artes,
03:06
we would be able to pay
for 20 full-time symphony orchestras
54
174480
4296
poderíanse pagar 20 orquestras sinfónicas
a tempo completo
03:10
at 20 million dollars apiece,
55
178800
2016
dándolles 16 millóns de euros a cada unha,
03:12
and give over 80,000 artists
56
180840
3456
e pagarlles a máis de 80.000 artistas
03:16
an annual salary of 50,000 dollars each.
57
184320
3080
un soldo de case 41.000 euros a cada un.
03:20
If that's only 0.05 percent,
58
188200
3256
Iso só co 0,05 por cento.
03:23
imagine what a full one percent could do.
59
191480
1960
Imaxinade o que se podería facer
co 1 por cento.
03:26
Now, I know we live
in a capitalist society,
60
194920
2696
Ben sei que vivimos
nunha sociedade capitalista,
03:29
and profits matter a lot.
61
197640
2080
onde os beneficios son moi importantes.
03:32
So let's look at it
from a financial angle, shall we?
62
200760
2840
Así que miremos o asunto
dende o punto de vista financeiro.
A industria artística dos EE. UU.
sen ánimo de lucro
03:36
The US nonprofit arts industry
63
204280
2376
03:38
generates more than 166 billion dollars
in economic activity,
64
206680
5816
xera máis de 135.000 millóns de euros
en actividade económica,
03:44
it employs 5.7 million people
65
212520
3496
dálle emprego a 5,7 millóns de persoas
03:48
and it returns 12.6 billion dollars
66
216040
2936
e contribúe con máis
de 10.000 millóns de euros
03:51
in tax revenue.
67
219000
1576
en impostos.
03:52
But this is only a financial angle, right?
68
220600
2256
Isto só dende o punto de vista financeiro.
03:54
We all know that the arts is way more
than just an economic value.
69
222880
4496
Todos sabemos que a arte
non só ten valor económico.
03:59
The arts brings meaning to life.
70
227400
2096
A arte dálle sentido á vida.
04:01
It's the spirit of our culture.
71
229520
1960
É o espírito da nosa cultura.
04:04
It brings people together
and it supports creativity
72
232480
2456
Une ás persoas e fomenta a creatividade
04:06
and social cohesion.
73
234960
1760
e a cohesión social.
04:09
But if the arts contributes
this much to our economy,
74
237360
4096
Pero se a arte contribúe tanto
na nosa economía,
04:13
why then do we still invest
so little in arts and artists?
75
241480
4120
por que seguimos a investir
tan pouco na arte e nos artistas?
04:19
Why do more than 80 percent
of our schools nationwide
76
247120
4456
Por que máis do 80 por cento
das escolas do país
04:23
still experience budget cuts
in arts education programs?
77
251600
3400
seguen sufrindo recortes nos programas
de educación artística?
04:28
What is it about the value
of arts and artists
78
256360
2736
Que parte do valor da arte e dos artistas
04:31
that we still don't understand?
79
259120
1880
seguimos sen entender?
04:34
I believe the system is flawed
and far from being fair,
80
262079
3697
Penso que o sistema é deficiente
e fáltalle moito para ser xusto,
04:37
and I want to help change that.
81
265800
2136
e quero axudar a cambialo.
04:39
I want to live in a society
82
267960
2016
Quero vivir nunha sociedade
na que se lle dea máis valor aos artistas
04:42
where artists are more valued
83
270000
1696
04:43
and have more cultural
and financial support
84
271720
2656
e teñan máis apoio cultural e financeiro
04:46
so they can focus on creating arts
instead of being forced to drive Ubers
85
274400
4016
para poder centrárense en crear arte
no canto de conducir Ubers
04:50
or take corporate jobs
they'd rather not have.
86
278440
2680
ou coller en empresas traballos
que preferirían rexeitar.
04:53
There are other sources of income
for artists, however.
87
281880
3496
De todos os xeitos, hai outros modos

04:57
There are private foundations,
88
285400
2256
Hai fundacións privadas,
04:59
grants and patrons who give money,
89
287680

bolsas e patrocinadores que doan diñeiro,
05:02
except a vast majority of artists
don't know about these opportunities.
90
290280
4816
pero a gran maioría dos artistas
non saben desas oportunidades.
05:07
On one side you have institutions
and people with money.
91
295120
3616
Hai entón, por unha banda,
institucións e xente con cartos.
05:10
On the other side
you have artists seeking funding,
92
298760
2616
E hai, pola outra, artistas
na procura de financiamento,
05:13
but the artists don't know
about the people with the money,
93
301400
2816
pero os artistas non saben
desa xente con cartos,
05:16
and the people with the money
don't necessarily know
94
304240
2456
e a xente con cartos
non coñece, necesariamente,
05:18
about the artists out there.
95
306720
1376
a eses artistas.
05:20
This is why I am very excited

Por isto estou moi contento
de compartir Grantpa,

05:44
to reevaluate how we view
the artists in our society.

105

Entendemos o que pasa
na vida diaria dun artista?
05:57
or do we still believe that artists,
no matter how struggling they are,
