ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Vijay Kumar - Roboticist
As the dean of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science, Vijay Kumar studies the control and coordination of multi-robot formations.

Why you should listen

At the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, flying quadrotor robots move together in eerie formation, tightening themselves into perfect battalions, even filling in the gap when one of their own drops out. You might have seen viral videos of the quads zipping around the netting-draped GRASP Lab (they juggle! they fly through a hula hoop!). Vijay Kumar headed this lab from 1998-2004. He's now the dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he continues his work in robotics, blending computer science and mechanical engineering to create the next generation of robotic wonders.

3000
over autonome, vliegende strandballen.
00:27
No, agileAgile aerialLuchtfoto robotsrobots like this one.
3

4000
Nee, over wendbare luchtrobots zoals deze.
00:31
I'd like to tell you a little bitbeetje about the challengesuitdagingen in buildinggebouw these

00:38
So these robotsrobots
7
23000
2000
Deze robots
00:40
are relatedverwant to unmannedonbemande aerialLuchtfoto vehiclesvoertuigen.
8
25000

00:43
HoweverEchter, the vehiclesvoertuigen you see here are biggroot.
9
28000
3000
De tuigen die je hier ziet, zijn groot.
00:46
They weighwegen thousandsduizenden of poundspond,
10
31000
2000
Ze wegen duizenden kilo,
00:48
are not by any meansmiddelen agileAgile.
11
33000
2000
zijn allerminst wendbaar
00:50
They're not even autonomousautonoom.
12
35000
2000
en zijn ook niet autonoom.
00:52
In factfeit, manyveel of these vehiclesvoertuigen
13

Vele van deze voertuigen
00:54

01:03
What we're interestedgeïnteresseerd in is developingontwikkelen robotsrobots like this --
18
48000
2000
Wij willen dit soort van robots ontwikkelen --
01:05
and here are two other picturesafbeeldingen --
19
50000
2000
hier zijn nog twee afbeeldingen --
01:07
of robotsrobots that you can buykopen off the shelfplank.
20
52000
3000
deze kan je zo in de winkel kopen.
01:10
So these are helicoptershelikopters with fourvier rotorsrotoren
21
55000
3000
Dit zijn helikopters met vier rotoren.
01:13
and they're roughlyongeveer a metermeter or so in scaleschaal
22
58000
4000
Ze zijn ongeveer een meter groot
01:17
and weighwegen severalverscheidene poundspond.
23
62000
2000
en wegen een paar kilo.
01:19
And so we retrofitRetrofit these with sensorssensors and processorsprocessors,
24
64000
3000
We rusten ze uit met sensoren en processoren.
01:22
and these robotsrobots can flyvlieg indoorsbinnenshuis
25
67000
2000
Ze kunnen binnenshuis vliegen
01:24
withoutzonder GPSGPS.
26
69000
2000
zonder gps.
01:26
The robotrobot I'm holdingbezit in my handhand-
27
71000
2000
De robot die ik in de hand houd,
01:28
is this one,
28
73000
2000
is deze.
01:30
and it's been createdaangemaakt by two studentsstudenten,
29
75000
3000
Hij is gemaakt door twee studenten,
01:33
AlexAlex and DanielDaniel.
30
78000
2000
Alex en Daniel.
01:35
So this weighsweegt a little more
31
80000
2000
Dit weegt iets meer
01:37
than a tenthtiende of a poundpond.
32
82000
2000
dan vijf gram.
01:39
It consumesverbruikt about 15 wattswatt of powermacht.
33
84000
2000
Het verbruikt ongeveer 15 watt.
01:41
And as you can see,
34
86000
2000
Zoals je ziet,
01:43
it's about eightacht inchesinches in diameterdiameter.
35
88000
2000
heeft het een diameter van ongeveer 20 cm.
01:45
So let me give you just a very quicksnel tutorialtutorial
36
90000
3000
Laat me jullie een snelcursus geven
01:48
on how these robotsrobots work.
37
93000
2000
in de werking van deze robots.
01:50
So it has fourvier rotorsrotoren.
38
95000
2000
Hij heeft vier rotoren.
01:52
If you spinspinnen these rotorsrotoren at the samedezelfde speedsnelheid,
39
97000
2000
Als je die met dezelfde snelheid laat draaien,
01:54
the robotrobot hoverszweeft.
40
99000
2000
dan zweeft de robot.
01:56
If you increasetoename the speedsnelheid of eachelk of these rotorsrotoren,
41
101000
3000
Als je de snelheid van alle rotoren verhoogt,
01:59
then the robotrobot fliesvliegen up, it acceleratesversnelt up.
42
104000
3000
vliegt hij omhoog en versnelt hij.
02:02
Of courseCursus, if the robotrobot were tiltedgekanteld,
43
107000
2000
Als de robot gekanteld zou zijn,
02:04
inclinedgeneigd to the horizontalhorizontaal,
44
109000
2000
horizontaal gekanteld,
02:06
then it would accelerateversnellen in this directionrichting.
45
111000
3000
dan zou hij in deze richting versnellen.
02:09
So to get it to tiltkantelen, there's one of two waysmanieren of doing it.
46
114000
3000
Om de robot te doen kantelen, zijn er twee methodes.
02:12
So in this pictureafbeelding
47
117000
2000
In deze afbeelding
02:14
you see that rotorRotor fourvier is spinningspinnen fastersneller
48
119000
2000
zie je dat rotor 4 sneller draait
02:16
and rotorRotor two is spinningspinnen slowertragere.
49
121000
2000
en rotor 2 trager.
02:18
And when that happensgebeurt
50
123000
2000
Als dat gebeurt,
02:20
there's momentmoment that causesoorzaken this robotrobot to rollrollen.
51
125000
3000
gaat de robot om de langsas rollen.
02:23
And the other way around,
52
128000
2000
Omgekeerd,
02:25
if you increasetoename the speedsnelheid of rotorRotor threedrie
53
130000
3000
als je de snelheid van rotor drie verhoogt
02:28
and decreasekleiner worden the speedsnelheid of rotorRotor one,
54
133000
2000
en die van rotor één verlaagt,
02:30
then the robotrobot pitchesstandplaatsen forwardvooruit.
55
135000
3000
dan stampt de robot om de dwars-as.
02:33
And then finallyTenslotte,
56
138000
2000
Tenslotte,
02:35
if you spinspinnen oppositetegenover pairsparen of rotorsrotoren
57
140000
2000
als je tegenovergestelde paren rotoren
02:37
fastersneller than the other pairpaar-,
58
142000
2000
sneller doet draaien dan het andere paar,
02:39
then the robotrobot yawsframboesia about the verticalverticaal axisas.
59
144000
2000
dan giert de robot om de top-as.
02:41
So an on-boardaan boord processorbewerker
60
146000
2000
Een processor in de robot
02:43
essentiallyin wezen lookslooks at what motionsontwerp-resoluties need to be executeduitgevoerd
61
148000
3000
bekijkt welke bewegingen moeten worden uitgevoerd
02:46
and combinescombines these motionsontwerp-resoluties
62
151000
2000
en combineert deze bewegingen.
02:48
and figuresfiguren out what commandsopdrachten to sendsturen to the motorsmotoren
63
153000
3000
Hij vist uit welke bevelen naar de motoren moeten gaan,
02:51
600 timestijden a secondtweede.
64
156000
2000
en dat 600 keer per seconde.
02:53
That's basicallyeigenlijk how this thing operatesexploiteert.
65
158000
2000
Zo werkt dit ding.
02:55
So one of the advantagesvoordelen of this designontwerp
66
160000
2000
Eén van de voordelen van dit ontwerp
02:57
is, when you scaleschaal things down,
67
162000
2000
is dat als je alles kleiner maakt,
02:59
the robotrobot naturallyvan nature becomeswordt agileAgile.
68
164000
3000
de robot van nature wendbaar wordt.
03:02
So here R
69
167000
2000
Hier is R
03:04
is the characteristickarakteristiek lengthlengte of the robotrobot.
70
169000
2000
de gebruikelijke lengte van de robot.
03:06
It's actuallywerkelijk halfvoor de helft the diameterdiameter.
71
171000
3000
Het is de helft van de diameter.
03:09
And there are lots of physicalfysiek parametersparameters that changeverandering
72
174000
3000
Er zijn een hoop fysische parameters die wijzigen
03:12
as you reduceverminderen R.
73
177000
2000
als je R kleiner maakt.
03:14
The one that's the mostmeest importantbelangrijk
74
179000
2000
De belangrijkste
03:16
is the inertiatraagheid or the resistanceweerstand to motionbeweging.
75
181000
2000
is de inertie of de weerstand tegen beweging.
03:18
So it turnsbochten out,
76
183000
2000
Het blijkt
03:20
the inertiatraagheid, whichwelke governsregelt angularhoekige motionbeweging,
77
185000
3000
dat de inertie, die de hoekbeweging bepaalt,
03:23
scalesbalans as a fifthvijfde powermacht of R.
78
188000
3000
met R tot de vijfde macht afneemt.
03:26
So the smallerkleiner you make R,
79
191000
2000
Hoe kleiner je R maakt,
03:28
the more dramaticallydramatisch the inertiatraagheid reducesvermindert.
80
193000
3000
hoe dramatischer de inertie afneemt.
03:31
So as a resultresultaat, the angularhoekige accelerationversnelling,
81
196000
3000
Het resultaat is dat de hoekversnelling,
03:34
denotedaangeduid by GreekGrieks letterbrief alphaalpha here,
82
199000
2000
hier weergegeven met de Griekse letter alpha,
03:36
goesgaat as one over R.
83
201000
2000
1 over R wordt.
03:38
It's inverselyomgekeerd proportionalproportioneel to R.
84
203000
2000
Ze is omgekeerd evenredig met R.
03:40
The smallerkleiner you make it the more quicklysnel you can turnbeurt.
85
205000
3000
Hoe kleiner je het maakt, hoe sneller je kan draaien.
03:43
So this should be clearduidelijk in these videosvideos.
86
208000
2000
Dat moet blijken uit deze video's.
03:45
At the bottombodem right you see a robotrobot
87
210000
3000
Rechtsonder zie je een robot
03:48
performinghet uitvoeren van a 360 degreemate flipomdraaien
88
213000
2000
die 360° draait
03:50
in lessminder than halfvoor de helft a secondtweede.
89
215000
2000
in minder dan een halve seconde.
03:52
MultipleMeerdere flipsDeze methode spiegelt, a little more time.
90
217000
3000
Meerdere omwentelingen, een beetje meer tijd.
03:55
So here the processesprocessen on boardboord
91
220000
2000
De processen aan boord
03:57
are gettingkrijgen feedbackterugkoppeling from accelerometersversnellingsmeters

03:59
and gyrosGyros on boardboord
93

04:01
and calculatingberekening, like I said before,
94
226000
2000
Ze berekenen zoals gezegd
04:03
commandsopdrachten at 600 timestijden a secondtweede
95
228000
2000
600 keer per seconde de bevelen
04:05
to stabilizestabiliseren this robotrobot.
96
230000
2000
om deze robot te stabiliseren.
04:07
So on the left, you see DanielDaniel throwinghet werpen this robotrobot up into the airlucht.
97
232000
3000
Links zie je Daniël die zijn robot omhoog gooit.
04:10
And it showsshows you how robustrobuust the controlcontrole is.
98
235000
2000
Dit toont hoe robuust de controle is.
04:12
No matterer toe doen how you throwGooi it,
99
237000
2000
Hoe je het ook gooit,
04:14
the robotrobot recoversherstelt and comeskomt back to him.
100
239000
4000
de robot herstelt zich en keert terug.
04:18
So why buildbouwen robotsrobots like this?
101
243000
2000
Waarom bouwen we dit soort robots?
04:20
Well robotsrobots like this have manyveel applicationstoepassingen.
102
245000
3000
Er zijn vele soorten toepassingen.
04:23
You can sendsturen them insidebinnen buildingsgebouwen like this
103
248000
3000
Je kan ze in dit soort gebouwen binnensturen
04:26
as first respondersresponders to look for intrudersindringers,
104
251000
3000
als eerstelijnsdienst op zoek naar inbrekers,
04:29
maybe look for biochemicalbiochemische leakslekken,
105
254000
3000
op zoek naar biochemische lekken,
04:32
gaseousverontreinigende gassen leakslekken.
106
257000
2000
of gaslekken.
04:34
You can alsoook use them
107
259000
2000
Je kan ze ook gebruiken
04:36
for applicationstoepassingen like constructionbouw.
108
261000
2000
voor bouwtoepassingen.
04:38
So here are robotsrobots carryingvervoer beamsbalken, columnskolommen
109
263000
4000
Dit zijn robots die balken dragen, zuilen,
04:42
and assemblingin elkaar zetten cube-likekubus-achtig structuresstructuren.
110
267000
3000
en die kubusachtige structuren bouwen.
04:45
I'll tell you a little bitbeetje more about this.
111
270000
3000
Ik vertel jullie er wat meer over.
04:48
The robotsrobots can be used for transportingvervoer cargolading.
112
273000
3000
De robots kunnen worden gebruikt om lading te vervoeren.
04:51
So one of the problemsproblemen with these smallklein robotsrobots
113
276000
3000
Eén van de problemen met deze kleine robots
04:54
is theirhun payloadpayload carryingvervoer capacitycapaciteit.
114
279000
2000
is hun vermogen om nuttige lading te vervoeren.
04:56
So you mightmacht want to have multiplemeerdere robotsrobots
115
281000
2000
Je hebt wellicht meerdere robots nodig
04:58
carrydragen payloadsnuttige lading.
116
283000
2000
die nuttige lading vervoeren.
05:00
This is a pictureafbeelding of a recentrecent experimentexperiment we did --
117
285000
2000
Dit is een beeld van een recent experiment --
05:02
actuallywerkelijk not so recentrecent anymoremeer --
118
287000
2000
intussen al niet meer zo recent --
05:04
in SendaiSendai shortlykort after the earthquakeaardbeving.
119
289000
3000
in Sendai, kort na de aardbeving.
05:07
So robotsrobots like this could be sentverzonden into collapsedingestort buildingsgebouwen
120
292000
3000
Robots als deze kunnen een ingestort gebouw ingestuurd worden
05:10
to assessschatten the damageschade after naturalnatuurlijk disastersrampen,
121
295000
2000
om de schade in te schatten na natuurrampen.
05:12
or sentverzonden into reactorreactor buildingsgebouwen
122
297000
3000
Ze kunnen reactorgebouwen worden ingestuurd
05:15
to mapkaart radiationbestraling levelslevels.
123
300000
3000
om stralingsniveaus in kaart te brengen.
05:19
So one fundamentalfundamenteel problemprobleem
124
304000
2000
Een fundamenteel probleem
05:21
that the robotsrobots have to solveoplossen if they're to be autonomousautonoom
125
306000
3000
dat robots moeten oplossen om autonoom te zijn,
05:24
is essentiallyin wezen figuringuitzoeken out
126
309000
2000
is uitzoeken
05:26
how to get from pointpunt A to pointpunt B.
127
311000
2000
hoe ze van punt A naar punt B geraken.
05:28
So this getskrijgt a little challenginguitdagend
128
313000
2000
Dat wordt een uitdaging
05:30
because the dynamicsdynamica of this robotrobot are quiteheel complicatedingewikkeld.
129
315000
3000
omdat de dynamica van deze robot ingewikkeld is.
05:33
In factfeit, they liveleven in a 12-dimensional-dimensionale spaceruimte.
130
318000
2000
Ze bewegen zich in een 12-dimensionale ruimte.
05:35
So we use a little tricktruc.
131
320000
2000
Daarom gebruiken we een trucje.
05:37
We take this curvedgebogen 12-dimensional-dimensionale spaceruimte
132
322000
3000
We nemen deze 12-dimensionale gekromde ruimte
05:40
and transformtransformeren it
133
325000
2000
en vormen ze om
05:42
into a flatvlak four-dimensionalvier-dimensionale spaceruimte.
134
327000
2000
tot een vlakke vierdimensionale ruimte.
05:44
And that four-dimensionalvier-dimensionale spaceruimte
135
329000
2000
Die vierdimensionale ruimte
05:46
consistsbestaat of X, Y, Z and then the yawyaw anglehoek.
136
331000
3000
bestaat uit X, Y, Z en de gierhoek.
05:49
And so what the robotrobot does
137
334000
2000
De robot doet het volgende:
05:51
is it plansplannen what we call a minimumminimum snapbreuk trajectorytraject.
138
336000
4000
hij plant wat wij een minimale 'snap'-baan noemen.
05:55
So to remindherinneren you of physicsfysica,
139
340000
2000
Kleine fysicaherhaling:
05:57
you have positionpositie, derivativederivaat, velocitysnelheid,
140
342000
2000
je hebt positie, snelheid is de afgeleide,
05:59
then accelerationversnelling,
141
344000
2000
dan versnelling,
06:01
and then comeskomt jerkeikel
142
346000
2000
dan 'jerk'
06:03
and then comeskomt snapbreuk.
143
348000
2000
en dan 'snap'.
06:05
So this robotrobot minimizesminimaliseert snapbreuk.
144
350000
3000
Deze robot minimaliseert 'snap'.
06:08
So what that effectivelyeffectief does
145
353000
2000
Waar dat toe leidt,
06:10
is producesproduceert a smoothglad and gracefulsierlijke motionbeweging.
146
355000
2000
is een vloeiende en gracieuze beweging.
06:12
And it does that avoidingvermijden obstaclesobstakels.
147
357000
3000
Dat doet het door obstakels te vermijden.
06:15
So these minimumminimum snapbreuk trajectoriestrajecten in this flatvlak spaceruimte
148
360000
3000
Deze minimale 'snap'-banen in een vlakke ruimte
06:18
are then transformedgetransformeerd back
149
363000
2000
worden vervolgens opnieuw omgezet
06:20
into this complicatedingewikkeld 12-dimensional-dimensionale spaceruimte,
150
365000
2000
naar een ingewikkelde 12-dimensionale ruimte.
06:22
whichwelke the robotrobot mustmoet do
151
367000
2000
De robot doet dat
06:24
for controlcontrole and then executionexecutie.
152
369000
2000
om te controleren en vervolgens uit te voeren.
06:26
So let me showtonen you some examplesvoorbeelden
153
371000
2000
Laat me jullie een paar voorbeelden tonen
06:28
of what these minimumminimum snapbreuk trajectoriestrajecten look like.
154
373000
2000
van hoe deze minimale snap-banen eruit zien.
06:30
And in the first videovideo-,
155
375000
2000
In de eerste video
06:32
you'llje zult see the robotrobot going from pointpunt A to pointpunt B
156
377000
2000
zie je de robot van punt A naar punt B gaan
06:34
throughdoor an intermediatetussen- pointpunt.
157
379000
2000
via een punt er tussenin.
06:42
So the robotrobot is obviouslyduidelijk capablein staat
158
387000
2000
De robot is in staat
06:44
of executinguitvoeren any curvekromme trajectorytraject.
159
389000
2000
om elke kromme baan uit te voeren.
06:46
So these are circularcirculaire trajectoriestrajecten
160
391000
2000
Dit zijn cirkelbanen
06:48
where the robotrobot pullstrekt about two G'sG's.
161
393000
3000
waarbij de robot ongeveer twee G te verwerken krijgt.
06:52
Here you have overheadoverhead motionbeweging capturevangst camerascamera's on the toptop
162
397000
4000
Dit zijn bewegingsregistratiecamera's op de bovenkant
06:56
that tell the robotrobot where it is 100 timestijden a secondtweede.
163
401000
3000
die de robot 100 keer per seconde vertellen waar hij is.
06:59
It alsoook tellsvertelt the robotrobot where these obstaclesobstakels are.
164
404000
3000
Ze vertellen hem ook waar de obstakels zijn.
07:02
And the obstaclesobstakels can be movingin beweging.
165
407000
2000
De obstakels kunnen bewegen.
07:04
And here you'llje zult see DanielDaniel throwGooi this hoophoepel into the airlucht,
166
409000
3000
Hier zie je Daniel een hoepel opgooien.
07:07
while the robotrobot is calculatingberekening the positionpositie of the hoophoepel
167
412000
2000
De robot berekent de positie van de hoepel
07:09
and tryingproberen to figurefiguur out how to bestbeste go throughdoor the hoophoepel.
168
414000
4000
en zoekt uit hoe hij er het beste kan doorvliegen.
07:13
So as an academicacademische,
169
418000
2000
Als academicus
07:15
we're always trainedgetraind to be ablein staat to jumpspringen throughdoor hoopshoepels to raiseverhogen fundingfinanciering for our labslabs,
170
420000
3000
oefenen we altijd om door hoepels te springen om geld in te zamelen voor ons lab.
07:18
and we get our robotsrobots to do that.
171
423000
3000
Onze robots doen dat voor ons.
07:21
(ApplauseApplaus)
172
426000
6000
(Applaus)
07:27
So anothereen ander thing the robotrobot can do
173
432000
2000
Nog iets dat deze robot kan doen,
07:29
is it remembersonthoudt piecesstukken of trajectorytraject
174
434000
3000
is dat hij delen van een baan onthoudt
07:32
that it learnsleert or is pre-programmedvoorgeprogrammeerd.
175
437000
2000
die hij leert of die voorgeprogrammeerd zijn.
07:34
So here you see the robotrobot
176
439000
2000
Hier zie je hoe de robot
07:36
combiningcombineren a motionbeweging
177
441000
2000
een beweging combineert
07:38
that buildsbouwt up momentumstuwkracht
178
443000
2000
die momentum opbouwt,
07:40
and then changesveranderingen its orientationafdrukstand and then recoversherstelt.
179
445000
3000
waarna hij zijn oriëntatie wijzigt en zich herstelt.
07:43
So it has to do this because this gapkloof in the windowvenster
180
448000
3000
Dat moet hij doen omdat het gat in het venster
07:46
is only slightlylicht largergrotere than the widthbreedte of the robotrobot.
181
451000
4000
maar een klein beetje breder is dan de breedte van de robot.
07:50
So just like a diverduiker standsstands on a springboardspringplank
182
455000
3000
Zoals een duiker op een duikplank staat
07:53
and then jumpssprongen off it to gainkrijgen momentumstuwkracht,
183
458000
2000
en eraf springt om momentum te krijgen
07:55
and then does this pirouettePirouette, this two and a halfvoor de helft somersaultSalto throughdoor
184
460000
3000
en dan een pirouette uitvoert, een 2 1/2 salto,
07:58
and then gracefullysierlijk recoversherstelt,
185
463000
2000
waarna hij zich gracieus herstelt,
08:00
this robotrobot is basicallyeigenlijk doing that.
186
465000
2000
zo doet deze robot hetzelfde.
08:02
So it knowsweet how to combinecombineren little bitsstukjes and piecesstukken of trajectoriestrajecten
187
467000
3000
Hij kan stukjes en beetjes van banen combineren
08:05
to do these fairlytamelijk difficultmoeilijk taskstaken.
188
470000
4000
om moeilijke taken uit te voeren.
08:09
So I want changeverandering gearsversnellingen.
189
474000
2000
Ik verander van versnelling.
08:11
So one of the disadvantagesnadelen of these smallklein robotsrobots is its sizegrootte.
190
476000
3000
Eén van de nadelen van deze kleine robots is hun omvang.
08:14
And I told you earliervroeger
191
479000
2000
Ik zei al
08:16
that we maymei want to employdienst lots and lots of robotsrobots
192
481000
2000
dat we heel veel robots nodig hebben
08:18
to overcomeoverwinnen the limitationsbeperkingen of sizegrootte.
193
483000
3000
om de beperkingen van de afmetingen te overwinnen.
08:21
So one difficultymoeilijkheid
194
486000
2000
Eén moeilijkheid is:
08:23
is how do you coordinatecoördinaat lots of these robotsrobots?
195
488000
3000
hoe coördineer je een hoop robots?
08:26
And so here we lookedkeek to naturenatuur.
196
491000
2000
Hier keken we naar de natuur.
08:28
So I want to showtonen you a clipklem
197
493000
2000
Ik wil jullie een clip tonen
08:30
of AphaenogasterAphaenogaster desertwoestijn antsmieren
198
495000
2000
van aphaenogaster-woestijnmieren
08:32
in ProfessorProfessor StephenStephen Pratt'sPratt's lablaboratorium carryingvervoer an objectvoorwerp.
199
497000
3000
die een object dragen in het lab van Professor Stephen Pratt.
08:35
So this is actuallywerkelijk a piecestuk of figFig.
200
500000
2000
Dit is een stuk vijg.
08:37
ActuallyEigenlijk you take any objectvoorwerp coatedgecoat with figFig juicesap
201
502000
2000
Bedek om het even welk object met een laag vijgensap
08:39
and the antsmieren will carrydragen them back to the nestnest.
202
504000
3000
en de mieren zullen het naar hun nest slepen.
08:42
So these antsmieren don't have any centralcentraal coordinatorcoördinator.
203
507000
3000
Deze mieren hebben geen centrale coördinator.
08:45
They sensezin theirhun neighborsburen.
204
510000
2000
Ze worden hun buren gewaar.
08:47
There's no explicituitdrukkelijk communicationcommunicatie.
205
512000
2000
Er is geen expliciete communicatie.
08:49
But because they sensezin the neighborsburen
206
514000
2000
Maar omdat ze hun buren gewaarworden,
08:51
and because they sensezin the objectvoorwerp,
207
516000
2000
en omdat ze het object gewaarworden,
08:53
they have implicitimpliciete coordinationcoördinatie acrossaan de overkant the groupgroep.
208
518000
3000
is er impliciete coördinatie in de groep.
08:56
So this is the kindsoort of coordinationcoördinatie
209
521000
2000
Dit is het soort coördinatie
08:58
we want our robotsrobots to have.
210
523000
3000
dat we wensen voor onze robots.
09:01
So when we have a robotrobot
211
526000
2000
We hebben een robot
09:03
whichwelke is surroundedomgeven by neighborsburen --
212
528000
2000
die omgeven is door buren --
09:05
and let's look at robotrobot I and robotrobot J --
213
530000
2000
laten we robot I en robot J in de gaten houden.
09:07
what we want the robotsrobots to do
214
532000
2000
We willen dat de robots
09:09
is to monitormonitor the separationscheiding betweentussen them
215
534000
3000
de afstand van elkaar in de gaten houden
09:12
as they flyvlieg in formationvorming.
216
537000
2000
terwijl ze in formatie vliegen.
09:14
And then you want to make sure
217
539000
2000
Je moet ervoor zorgen
09:16
that this separationscheiding is withinbinnen acceptableaanvaardbaar levelslevels.
218
541000
2000
dat deze afstand binnen aanvaardbare perken blijft.
09:18
So again the robotsrobots monitormonitor this errorfout
219
543000
3000
De robots monitoren de fout
09:21
and calculateberekenen the controlcontrole commandsopdrachten
220
546000
2000
en berekenen controlecommando's,
09:23
100 timestijden a secondtweede,
221
548000
2000
100 keer per seconde,
09:25
whichwelke then translatesvertaalt to the motormotor commandsopdrachten 600 timestijden a secondtweede.
222
550000
3000
wat dan wordt omgezet in bewegingscommando's, 600 keer per seconde.
09:28
So this alsoook has to be donegedaan
223
553000
2000
Dit moet ook gebeuren
09:30
in a decentralizedgedecentraliseerde way.
224
555000
2000
op gedecentraliseerde wijze.
09:32
Again, if you have lots and lots of robotsrobots,
225
557000
2000
Als je heel veel robots hebt,
09:34
it's impossibleonmogelijk to coordinatecoördinaat all this informationinformatie centrallyCentraal
226
559000
4000
kan je al deze informatie niet snel genoeg centraal coördineren
09:38
fastsnel enoughgenoeg in orderbestellen for the robotsrobots to accomplishbereiken the tasktaak.
227
563000
3000
om de robots in hun taak te doen slagen.
09:41
PlusPlus the robotsrobots have to basebaseren theirhun actionsacties
228
566000
2000
De robots moeten hun actie
09:43
only on locallokaal informationinformatie,
229
568000
2000
louter op lokale informatie baseren,
09:45
what they sensezin from theirhun neighborsburen.
230
570000
2000
op wat ze vanwege hun buren gewaarworden.
09:47
And then finallyTenslotte,
231
572000
2000
Tenslotte willen we
09:49
we insistaandringen that the robotsrobots be agnosticagnostic
232
574000
2000
dat de robots niet weten
09:51
to who theirhun neighborsburen are.
233
576000
2000
wie hun buren zijn.
09:53
So this is what we call anonymityanonimiteit.
234
578000
3000
Dat noemen we anonimiteit.
09:56
So what I want to showtonen you nextvolgende
235
581000
2000
Ik toon jullie zo meteen
09:58
is a videovideo-
236
583000
2000
een video
10:00
of 20 of these little robotsrobots
237
585000
3000
van 20 van deze kleine robots
10:03
flyingvliegend in formationvorming.
238
588000
2000
die in formatie vliegen.
10:05
They're monitoringtoezicht houden theirhun neighbors'buren positionpositie.
239
590000
3000
Ze monitoren de positie van hun buren.
10:08
They're maintainingbehoud formationvorming.
240
593000
2000
Ze houden een formatie aan.
10:10
The formationsformaties can changeverandering.
241
595000
2000
De formaties kunnen wijzigen.
10:12
They can be planarvlakke formationsformaties,
242
597000
2000
Ze kunnen vlak zijn,
10:14
they can be three-dimensionaldriedimensionaal formationsformaties.
243
599000
2000
of driedimensionaal.
10:16
As you can see here,
244
601000
2000
Hier zie je dat ze
10:18
they collapseineenstorting from a three-dimensionaldriedimensionaal formationvorming into planarvlakke formationvorming.
245
603000
3000
van een driedimensionale formatie naar een vlakke overgaan.
10:21
And to flyvlieg throughdoor obstaclesobstakels
246
606000
2000
Om door obstakels te vliegen,
10:23
they can adaptzich aanpassen the formationsformaties on the flyvlieg.
247
608000
4000
kunnen ze de formaties tijdens het vliegen aanpassen;
10:27
So again, these robotsrobots come really closedichtbij togethersamen.
248
612000
3000
Deze robots vliegen dicht tegen elkaar aan.
10:30
As you can see in this figure-eightcijfer-acht flightvlucht,
249
615000
2000
Je ziet bij deze acht-vormige vlucht
10:32
they come withinbinnen inchesinches of eachelk other.
250
617000
2000
dat ze centimeters van elkaar vliegen.
10:34
And despiteondanks the aerodynamicaërodynamisch interactionsinteracties
251
619000
3000
Ondanks de aërodynamische interactie
10:37
of these propellerpropeller bladesmessen,
252
622000
2000
van de schroefbladen,
10:39
they're ablein staat to maintainin stand houden stablestal flightvlucht.
253
624000
2000
slagen ze erin om stabiel te vliegen.
10:41
(ApplauseApplaus)
254
626000
7000
(Applaus)
10:48
So onceeen keer you know how to flyvlieg in formationvorming,
255
633000
2000
Zodra je weet hoe je in formatie vliegt,
10:50
you can actuallywerkelijk pickplukken up objectsvoorwerpen cooperativelycoöperatief.
256
635000
2000
kan je samen objecten oppikken.
10:52
So this just showsshows
257
637000
2000
Dit toont aan
10:54
that we can doubledubbele, tripleverdrievoudigen, quadrupleVierpersoonskamer
258
639000
3000
dat we dubbel, driedubbel, vier keer zoveel
10:57
the robotrobot strengthkracht
259
642000
2000
robotkracht kunnen krijgen
10:59
by just gettingkrijgen them to teamteam with neighborsburen, as you can see here.
260
644000
2000
door ze in team met hun buren te laten werken, zoals je hier ziet.
11:01
One of the disadvantagesnadelen of doing that
261
646000
3000
Eén van de nadelen daarvan is
11:04
is, as you scaleschaal things up --
262
649000
2000
dat als je de dingen opschaalt --
11:06
so if you have lots of robotsrobots carryingvervoer the samedezelfde thing,
263
651000
2000
als je veel robots hetzelfde ding laat dragen,
11:08
you're essentiallyin wezen effectivelyeffectief increasingtoenemend the inertiatraagheid,
264
653000
3000
je daardoor de inertie verhoogt
11:11
and thereforedaarom you paybetalen a priceprijs; they're not as agileAgile.
265
656000
3000
en dus een prijs betaalt. Ze zijn niet zo wendbaar.
11:14
But you do gainkrijgen in termstermen of payloadpayload carryingvervoer capacitycapaciteit.
266
659000
3000
Maar je nuttige lading stijgt wel.
11:17
AnotherEen ander applicationtoepassing I want to showtonen you --
267
662000
2000
Ik wil jullie nog een toepassing tonen --
11:19
again, this is in our lablaboratorium.
268
664000
2000
dit is in ons lab.
11:21
This is work donegedaan by QuentinQuentin LindseyLindsey who'swie is a graduateafstuderen studentstudent.
269
666000
2000
Dit werk is van de hand van student Quentin Lindsey.
11:23
So his algorithmalgoritme essentiallyin wezen tellsvertelt these robotsrobots
270
668000
3000
Zijn algoritme zegt deze robots
11:26
how to autonomouslyautonoom buildbouwen
271
671000
2000
hoe ze autonoom
11:28
cubickubieke structuresstructuren
272
673000
2000
kubusstructuren moeten bouwen
11:30
from truss-likeTruss-achtige elementselementen.
273
675000
3000
uit bundel-achtige elementen.
11:33
So his algorithmalgoritme tellsvertelt the robotrobot
274
678000
2000
Dit algoritme vertelt de robot
11:35
what partdeel to pickplukken up,
275
680000
2000
welk deel ze moeten oppikken,
11:37
when and where to placeplaats it.
276
682000
2000
wanneer, en waar ze het moeten neerzetten.
11:39
So in this videovideo- you see --
277
684000
2000
In deze video zie je --
11:41
and it's spedversneld up 10, 14 timestijden --
278
686000
2000
het is 10 tot 14 keer versneld --
11:43
you see threedrie differentverschillend structuresstructuren beingwezen builtgebouwd by these robotsrobots.
279
688000
3000
je ziet hoe 3 verschillende structuren door deze robots worden gebouwd.
11:46
And again, everything is autonomousautonoom,
280
691000
2000
Alles is autonoom,
11:48
and all QuentinQuentin has to do
281
693000
2000
en het enige dat Quentin moet doen,
11:50
is to get them a blueprintblauwdruk
282
695000
2000
is ze een blauwdruk geven
11:52
of the designontwerp that he wants to buildbouwen.
283
697000
4000
van het ontwerp dat hij wil bouwen.
11:56
So all these experimentsexperimenten you've seengezien thusdus farver,
284
701000
3000
Alle experimenten die je tot hiertoe hebt gezien,
11:59
all these demonstrationsdemonstraties,
285
704000
2000
alle demonstraties
12:01
have been donegedaan with the help of motionbeweging capturevangst systemssystemen.
286
706000
3000
zijn uitgevoerd met bewegingsregistratiesystemen.
12:04
So what happensgebeurt when you leavehet verlof your lablaboratorium
287
709000
2000
Wat gebeurt er als je je lab verlaat,
12:06
and you go outsidebuiten into the realecht worldwereld-?
288
711000
3000
en je naar buiten gaat, de echte wereld in?
12:09
And what if there's no GPSGPS?
289
714000
3000
Wat als er geen gps is?
12:12
So this robotrobot
290
717000
2000
Deze robot
12:14
is actuallywerkelijk equippeduitgerust with a cameracamera
291
719000
2000
is uitgerust met een camera
12:16
and a laserlaser rangefinderafstandsmeter, laserlaser scannerscanner.
292
721000
3000
een een optische afstandsmeter, een laserscanner.
12:19
And it usestoepassingen these sensorssensors
293
724000
2000
Het gebruikt deze sensoren
12:21
to buildbouwen a mapkaart of the environmentmilieu.
294
726000
2000
om een kaart van de omgeving op te stellen.
12:23
What that mapkaart consistsbestaat of are featuresKenmerken --
295
728000
3000
Die kaart bestaat uit kenmerken --
12:26
like doorwaysdeuropeningen, windowsramen,
296
731000
2000
deuren, vensters,
12:28
people, furnituremeubilair --
297
733000
2000
mensen, meubilair --
12:30
and it then figuresfiguren out where its positionpositie is
298
735000
2000
en zoekt dan uit waar zijn positie is
12:32
with respecteerbied to the featuresKenmerken.
299
737000
2000
met betrekking tot die kenmerken.
12:34
So there is no globalglobaal coordinatecoördinaat systemsysteem.
300
739000
2000
Er is geen algemeen coördinatensysteem.
12:36
The coordinatecoördinaat systemsysteem is definedbepaald basedgebaseerde on the robotrobot,
301
741000
3000
Het coördinatensysteem is gebaseerd op de robot,
12:39
where it is and what it's looking at.
302
744000
3000
waar die is en waar hij naar kijkt.
12:42
And it navigatesnavigeert with respecteerbied to those featuresKenmerken.
303
747000
3000
Hij navigeert op basis van die kenmerken.
12:45
So I want to showtonen you a clipklem
304
750000
2000
Ik toon jullie een filmpje
12:47
of algorithmsalgoritmen developedontwikkelde by FrankFrank ShenShen
305
752000
2000
van algoritmes die zijn ontworpen door Frank Shen
12:49
and ProfessorProfessor NathanNathan MichaelMichael
306
754000
2000
en door professor Nathan Michael.
12:51
that showsshows this robotrobot enteringinvoeren a buildinggebouw for the very first time
307
756000
4000
Je ziet hoe deze robot een gebouw voor het eerst binnengaat
12:55
and creatinghet creëren van this mapkaart on the flyvlieg.
308
760000
3000
en daarbij deze kaart maakt.
12:58
So the robotrobot then figuresfiguren out what the featuresKenmerken are.
309
763000
3000
De robot zoekt uit wat de kenmerken zijn.
13:01
It buildsbouwt the mapkaart.
310
766000
2000
Hij stelt de kaart op.
13:03
It figuresfiguren out where it is with respecteerbied to the featuresKenmerken
311
768000
2000
Hij zoekt uit wat zijn positie is op basis van de kenmerken
13:05
and then estimatesramingen its positionpositie
312
770000
2000
en schat dan zijn positie in,
13:07
100 timestijden a secondtweede
313
772000
2000
100 keer per seconde,
13:09
allowingtoestaan us to use the controlcontrole algorithmsalgoritmen
314
774000
2000
waarbij we de controle-algoritmes kunnen gebruiken
13:11
that I describedbeschreven to you earliervroeger.
315
776000
2000
die ik eerder heb beschreven.
13:13
So this robotrobot is actuallywerkelijk beingwezen commandedgeboden
316
778000
2000
Deze robot wordt vanop afstand
13:15
remotelyop afstand by FrankFrank.
317
780000
2000
bestuurd door Frank.
13:17
But the robotrobot can alsoook figurefiguur out
318
782000
2000
De robot kan ook op zijn eentje
13:19
where to go on its owneigen.
319
784000
2000
uitzoeken waar hij heen moet.
13:21
So supposeveronderstellen I were to sendsturen this into a buildinggebouw
320
786000
2000
Als ik dit een gebouw instuur
13:23
and I had no ideaidee what this buildinggebouw lookedkeek like,
321
788000
2000
en geen idee heb hoe het eruit ziet,
13:25
I can askvragen this robotrobot to go in,
322
790000
2000
kan ik deze robot vragen om binnen te gaan,
13:27
createcreëren a mapkaart
323
792000
2000
een kaart op te stellen
13:29
and then come back and tell me what the buildinggebouw lookslooks like.
324
794000
3000
en me dan te komen vertellen hoe het gebouw eruit ziet.
13:32
So here, the robotrobot is not only solvingoplossen the problemprobleem,
325
797000
3000
De robot lost niet alleen het probleem op -
13:35
how to go from pointpunt A to pointpunt B in this mapkaart,
326
800000
3000
hoe ga ik van punt A naar punt B op deze kaart -
13:38
but it's figuringuitzoeken out
327
803000
2000
maar hij zoekt ook uit
13:40
what the bestbeste pointpunt B is at everyelk time.
328
805000
2000
wat op elk moment het beste punt B is.
13:42
So essentiallyin wezen it knowsweet where to go
329
807000
3000
Hij weet dus waar hij moet gaan
13:45
to look for placesplaatsen that have the leastminst informationinformatie.
330
810000
2000
om plaatsen te zoeken met minimale informatie.
13:47
And that's how it populateswordt gevuld this mapkaart.
331
812000
3000
Zo stelt hij deze kaart op.
13:50
So I want to leavehet verlof you
332
815000
2000
Ik wil besluiten
13:52
with one last applicationtoepassing.
333
817000
2000
met nog een laatste toepassing.
13:54
And there are manyveel applicationstoepassingen of this technologytechnologie.
334
819000
3000
Er zijn vele toepassingen van deze technologie.
13:57
I'm a professorprofessor, and we're passionatehartstochtelijk about educationonderwijs.
335
822000
2000
Ik ben professor. Mijn passie is onderwijs.
13:59
RobotsRobots like this can really changeverandering the way
336
824000

14:01
we do K throughdoor 12 educationonderwijs.
337

14:03
But we're in SouthernZuidelijke CaliforniaCalifornië,

14:05
closedichtbij to LosLos AngelesAngeles,
339

14:07
so I have to concludeconcluderen

dus moet ik afsluiten
14:09

341
834000

14:11
I want to concludeconcluderen with a musicmuziek- videovideo-.
