Michael McDaniel - Graphic designer
Michael McDaniel is a graphic designer using his skills to help people in meaningful ways.

Why you should listen

Michael McDaniel has worked on a wide range of projects for clients including MTV, Comcast, AT&T, American Airlines, Best Buy, HP, Sprint and Disney. His designs have been widely recognized; he's received awards from the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers for work at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and from Cooper Union for a conceptual redesign of the interstate highway system.

Prompted by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, McDaniel began working in his spare time for five years straight on what would become the Exo Reaction Housing System -- portable, cheap disaster relief shelters. He is a principal designer at frog and the founder and C.E.O. at Reaction Systems, Inc.

00:13
So, I'm going to start off with kind of the buzzkill a little bit.
0
1522
3978
Vou começar com uma coisa meio chata
00:17
Forty-two million people
1
5500
2131
Quarenta e dois milhões de pessoas
00:19
were displaced by natural disasters in 2010.
2
7631
3110
foram desalojadas por desastres naturais em 2010.
00:22
Now, there was nothing particularly special about 2010,
3
10741
3071
Bom, não houve nada particularmente especial sobre 2010
00:25
because, on average, 31 and a half million people
4
13812
3296
porque, em média, 31,5 milhões de pessoas
00:29
are displaced by natural disasters every single year.
5
17108
3103
são desalojadas por desastres naturais todo ano.
00:32
Now, usually when people hear statistics or stats like that,
6
20211
2548
00:34
you start thinking about places like Haiti or other kind of
7
22759
2794
00:37
exotic or maybe even impoverished areas, but it happens
8
25553
3420
00:40
right here in the United States every single year.
9
28973
3123
aqui nos Estados Unidos todo ano .
00:44
Last year alone, 99 federally declared disasters
10
32096
3015
00:47
were on file with FEMA,
11
35111
2246
oficialmente declarados,
00:49
from Joplin, Missouri, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama,
12
37357
3191
de Joplin, Missouri, e Tuscaloosa, Alabama,
00:52
to the Central Texas wildfires that just happened recently.
13
40548
4391
00:56
Now, how does the most powerful country in the world
14
44939
2065
00:59
handle these displaced people?
15
47004
2099
lida com estas pessoas desalojadas?
01:01
They cram them onto cots, put all your personal belongings
16
49103
2429
01:03
in a plastic garbage bag, stick it underneath,
17
51532
2168
01:05
and put you on the floor of an entire sports arena,
18
53700
3015
01:08
or a gymnasium.
19
56715
3511
ou um ginásio.
01:12
So obviously there's a massive housing gap,
20
60226
3062
01:15
and this really upset me, because academia tells you
21
63288
2908
e isso realmente me incomoda, porque a academia te diz
01:18
after a major disaster, there's typically about
22
66196
2289
01:20
an 18-month time frame to -- we kinda recover,
23
68485
3339
01:23
start the recovery process,
24
71824
1577
começar o processo de recuperação,
01:25
but what most people don't realize is that on average
25
73401
2365
01:27
it takes 45 to 60 days or more
26
75766
3064
leva-se de 45 a 60 dias ou mais
01:30
for the infamous FEMA trailers to even begin to show up.
27
78830
2862
01:33
Before that time, people are left to their own devices.
28
81692
3618
01:37
So I became obsessed with trying to figure out a way
29
85310
3376
01:40
to actually fill this gap.
30
88686
2150
de realmente preencher essa lacuna.
01:42
This actually became my creative obsession.
31
90836
2554
01:45
I put aside all my freelance work after hours and started
32
93390
2705
Deixei de lado todas as minhas horas extras de freelance e comecei
01:48
just focusing particularly on this problem.
33
96095
5742
a focar apenas particularmente neste problema.
01:53
So I started sketching.
34
101837
1359
Comecei então a rascunhar.
01:55
Two days after Katrina, I started sketching and sketching
35
103196
2024
01:57
and trying to brainstorm up ideas or solutions for this,
36
105220
1848
01:59
and as things started to congeal or ideas started to form,
37
107068
3158
02:02
I started sketching digitally on the computer,
38
110226
2226
comecei a fazer os esboços digitalmente no computador,
02:04
but it was an obsession, so I couldn't just stop there.
39
112452
3469
02:07
I started experimenting, making models,
40
115921
2139
Comecei a experimentar, fazer modelos,
02:10
talking to experts in the field, taking their feedback,
41
118060
2778
02:12
and refining, and I kept on refining and refining
42
120838
2911
e refinando, e continuei refinando e refinando
02:15
for nights and weekends for over five years.
43
123749
3056
02:18
Now, my obsession ended up driving me to create
44
126805
3485
Aí minha obsessão me levou a criar
02:22
full-size prototypes in my own backyard — (Laughter) —
45
130290
2285
protótipos em tamanho real no meu próprio quintal (risos)
02:24
and actually spending my own personal savings on
46
132575
2366
e gastar de fato minha poupança pessoal
02:26
everything from tooling to patents
47
134941
2249
em tudo, de ferramentas a patentes
02:29
and a variety of other costs,
48
137190
2616
e uma variedade de outros custos,
02:31
but in the end I ended up with this modular housing system
49
139806
2864
02:34
that can react to any situation or disaster.
50
142670
2662
02:37
It can be put up in any environment,
51
145332
3099
Pode ser colocado em qualquer ambiente,
02:40
from an asphalt parking lot to pastures or fields,
52
148431
3943
02:44
because it doesn't require any special setup
53
152374
2003
porque não requer qualquer preparação especial
02:46
or specialty tools.
54
154377
2182
ou ferramentas especializadas.
02:48
Now, at the foundation and kind of the core
55
156559
1720
Na fundação e no núcleo
02:50
of this whole system is the Exo Housing Unit,
56
158279
2934
02:53
which is just the individual shelter module.
57
161213
2433
02:55
And though it's light, light enough that you can actually
58
163646
1732
02:57
lift it by hand and move it around,
59
165378
2156
levantar com a mão e mover,
02:59
and it actually sleeps four people.
60
167534
3699
tem lugar para quatro pessoas dormirem.
03:03
And you can arrange these things as kind of more
61
171237
2664
03:05
for encampments and more of a city grid type layout,
62
173901
2775
03:08
or you can circle the wagons, essentially,
63
176676
1895
03:10
and form these circular pods out of them,
64
178571
2011
e formar esses centros circulares,
03:12
which give you this semi-private communal area
65
180582
2456
o que resulta numa área comunitária semi-privada
03:15
for people to actually spill out into so they're not actually
66
183038
2769
03:17
trapped inside these units.
67
185807
2099
presas dentro dessas unidades
03:19
Now this fundamentally changes
68
187906
2425
Agora, isso muda fundamentalmente
03:22
the way we respond to disasters,
69
190331
2158
a forma como reagimos aos desastres,
03:24
because gone are the horrid conditions
70
192489
1978
porque se foram as condições horríveis
03:26
inside a sports arena or a gymnasium, where people
71
194467
2725
03:29
are crammed on these cots inside.
72
197192
2012
estão empilhadas nestas camas de campanha.
03:31
Now we have instant neighborhoods outside.
73
199204
5587
Agora temos quarteirões instantâneos do lado de fora
03:36
So the Exo is designed to be simply, basically
74
204791
2975
03:39
like a coffee cup. They can actually stack together
75
207766
2242
como uma xícara de café. Eles podem de fato ser empilhados
03:42
so we get extremely efficient transportation
76
210008
2925
então temos um transporte e armazenamento
03:44
and storage out of them.
77
212933
2251
extremamente eficientes.
03:47
In fact, 15 Exos can fit on a single semi truck by itself.
78
215184
4636
03:51
This means the Exo can actually be transported and set up
79
219820
3174
03:54
faster than any other housing option available today.
80
222994
4984
03:59
But I'm obsessive, so I couldn't just stop there,
81
227978
1989
04:01
so I actually started modifying the bunks where you could
82
229967
1889
então eu comecei a modificar as beliches, assim
04:03
actually slide out the bunks and slide in desks or shelving,
83
231856
2308
você pode retirar as beliches, e colocar mesas e prateleiras
04:06
so the same unit can now be used
84
234164
1512
04:07
for an office or storage location.
85
235676
3225
como escritório ou armazém.
04:10
The doors can actually swap out, so you can actually put on
86
238901
3718
04:14
a rigid panel with a window unit in it for climate control,
87
242619
2869
04:17
or a connector module that would allow you to actually
88
245488
2466
04:19
connect multiple units together, which gives you
89
247954
2385
conecte múltiplas unidades juntas, o que dá a você
04:22
larger and kind of compartmentalized living spaces,
90
250339
3666
04:26
so now this same kit of parts, this same unit
91
254005
2312
04:28
can actually serve as a living room, bedroom or bathroom,
92
256317
4643
pode servir como sala, quarto ou banheiro,
04:32
or an office, a living space and secure storage.
93
260960
6107
ou escritório, moradia ou armazém seguro.
04:39
Sounds like a great idea, but how do you make it real?
94
267067
3067
04:42
So the first idea I had, initially, was just
95
270134
2004
04:44
to go the federal and state governments and go,
96
272138
1856
04:45
"Here, take it, for free."
97
273994
2663
"Olha, peguem, de graça"
04:48
But I was quickly told that, "Boy, our government
98
276657
1983
Mas me disseram logo que, "Cara, nosso governo
04:50
doesn't really work like that." (Laughter)
99
278640
2258
não funciona assim na verdade". (risos)
04:52
Okay. Okay. So maybe I would start a nonprofit
100
280898
3985
Ok, Ok, Então talvez eu possa começar um tipo
04:56
to kind of help consult and get this idea going
101
284883
2843
04:59
along with the government, but then I was told,
102
287726
2103
junto com o governo, então me disseram
05:01
"Son, our government looks to private sector
103
289829
2475
"Filho, nosso governo procura pelo setor privado
05:04
for things like this."
104
292304
1597
para coisas assim."
05:05
Okay. So maybe I would take this whole idea and go
105
293901
2990
Ok, então talvez eu pegasse a ideia toda e fosse
05:08
to private corporations that would have this mutually shared
106
296891
2420
05:11
benefit to it, but I was quickly told by some corporations
107
299311
2903
compartilhado, mas logo algumas empresas me disseram
05:14
that my personal passion project was not a brand fit
108
302214
4281
05:18
because they didn't want their logos stamped
109
306495
2578
porque não queriam seus logotipos estampados
05:21
across the ghettos of Haiti.
110
309073
2424
pelos guetos do Haiti.
05:23
Now, I wasn't just obsessed. I was outraged. (Laughter.)
111
311497
5936
05:29
So I decided, kind of told myself,
112
317433
4417
05:33
"Oh yeah? Watch this. I'll do it myself." (Laughter)
113
321850
5875
"Ah, é? Observem, vou fazer isso sozinho" (risos)
05:39
Now, this quickly, my day job sent me to work out of
114
327725
2180
Agora, rapidamente, meu trabalho diário me levou a
05:41
our Milan office for a few months, so I was like,
115
329905
3154
trabalhar fora do escritório de Milão por alguns, meses, então eu pensei
05:45
what will I do? So I actually scheduled sleep on my calendar,
116
333059
2737
o que vou fazer? Então eu ajustei sono no meu calendário
05:47
and spent the 8-hour time difference on conference calls
117
335796
3200
05:50
with material suppliers, manufacturers and potential customers.
118
338996
4020
05:55
And we found through this whole process, we found
119
343016
1454
We encontramos durante todo esse processo, encontramos
05:56
this great little manufacturer in Virginia,
120
344470
2374
esse grande pequeno fabricante na Virgínia,
05:58
and if his body language is any indication,
121
346844
2153
06:00
that's the owner — (Laughter) — of what it's like
122
348997
2079
esse é o dono - (risos) - de como
06:03
for a manufacturer to work directly with a designer,
123
351076
2093
um fabricante trabalhar diretamente com um designer,
06:05
you've got to see what happens here. (Laughter)
124
353169
3203
vocês têm que ver o que acontece aqui. (Risos)
06:08
But G.S. Industries was fantastic.
125
356372
2256
Mas a G.S. Industries foi fantástica
06:10
They actually built three prototypes for us by hand.
126
358628
4380
06:15
So now we have prototypes that can show that four people
127
363008
3147
06:18
can actually sleep securely and much more comfortably
128
366155
2416
06:20
than a tent could ever provide.
129
368571
4497
do que jamais fariam em uma tenda,
06:25
And they actually shipped them here to Texas for us.
130
373068
1750
E eles mandaram aqui para o Texas para nós.
06:26
Now, a funny thing started happening.
131
374818
1453
Ai, uma coisa engraçada comecou a acontecer.
06:28
Other people started to believe in what we were doing,
132
376271
2468
Outras pessoas começaram a acreditar no que estávamos fazendo
06:30
and actually offered us hangar space, donated hangar
133
378739
1917
e ofereceram espaço em hangares, doaram espaços
06:32
space to us. And then the Georgetown Airport Authority
134
380656
2284
06:34
was bent over backwards to help us with anything we needed.
135
382940
4106
06:39
So now we had a hangar space to work in,
136
387046
1661
Agora tínhamos um hangar para trabalhar,
06:40
and prototypes to demo with.
137
388707
3082
e protótipos para demonstrar.
06:43
So in one year, we've negotiated manufacturing agreements,
138
391789
3567
06:47
been awarded one patent, filed our second patent,
139
395356
2661
06:50
talked to multiple people, demoed this to FEMA
140
398017
2683
06:52
and its consultants to rave reviews,
141
400700
2248
e seus consultores para saber a opinião,
06:54
and then started talking to some other people who requested
142
402948
2183
06:57
information, this little group called the United Nations.
143
405131
2491
informações, esse pequeno grupo chamado Nações Unidas.
06:59
