ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Carlos Bautista - Entrepreneur, creative technologist
TED Resident Carlos Bautista wants to close the information and technology gap for people in developing countries.

Why you should listen

Carlos Bautista is working to develop MineSafe: a crowd-sourced information system for people in landmine-affected areas around the world. MineSafe aimsto  analyze and deliver safe paths and reliable information for their daily commutes.

Bautista in an entrepreneur and creative technologist who has collaborated with other professionals to create a number of companies and research projects, ranging from a tailored shoe company to an augmented reality app that helps military personnel to deactivate landmines. He's worked with start-ups in New York City, helping them to develop and implement technological tools to enhance their educational services, using human-centered design methodologies.

As a professor, Bautista coached a team of young women during the summer of 2017, guiding them through the design thinking process at the Cornell and CUNY Women in Technology in NY (WiTNY) program. This experience allowed students to experiment with the use of empathy to develop successful technological products. Bautista has also taught classes at the Politécnico Grancolombiano in interactive design, 3D design and animation, web design, augmented reality and descriptive geometry. Bautista led the process of opening the Industrial Design program in Politécnico Grancolombiano, which opened in 2015.

Bautista is based in NYC working as a research associate at Tandon School of Engineering's computer science department, under the supervision of professor Claudio Silva, Interim Director of Center for Data Science. Together they are working to develop MineSafe to help people in rural areas of the world to move freely and safely without worrying about landmines.

Carlos Bautista: The awful logic of land mines -- and an app that helps people avoid them

You know, the Colombian conflict

Sabe, o conflito colombiano
já dura há tanto tempo

02:30
how deeply our country has

42
138068
4372
o quão profundamente nosso país tem sido
afetado pelas minas e pela guerra.
02:35
We decided to come here

Nós decidimos vir para os Estados Unidos
em busca de novas habilidades
02:37
in search of new skills

02:39
that would enable us to contribute
in a fair way to our society,
45
147855
4230
que nos possibilitassem contribuir
de forma justa para com a nossa sociedade
02:44
and maybe even help heal it.
46
152109
2000
e quem sabe até ajudar a sará-la.
Durante a pós-graduação,
02:47
While in grad school,
47
155364
1171
comecei a desenvolver uma realidade
aumentada, de ampla aplicação,
02:48
I started developing
48
156559
1210
02:49
an augmented reality,
really broad application
49
157793
3040
02:52
to help military personnel
to deactivate land mines more safely.
50
160857
3308
para ajudar militares a desativar
minas terrestres de forma mais segura.
Naquela época,
02:57
During that time, I also realized
51
165583
2628
também descobri que a Colômbia
não era o único país
03:00
that Colombia is not
the only country in the world
52
168235
2627
que precisa se preocupar
com minas terrestres.
03:02
that has to worry about land mines.
53
170886
2396
03:06
In fact, more than 58 countries
54
174724
2845
Na verdade, mais de 58 países
03:09
are still contaminated
with any sort of explosive device.
55
177593
3769
ainda estão contaminados
com algum tipo de dispositivo explosivo.
03:14
Only in 2015, due to an escalation of war
56
182101
3572
Somente em 2015,
devido ao aumento de conflitos em países
como Líbia, Síria, Ucrânia e Iêmen,
03:17
in countries like Libya,
Syria, Ukraine and Yemen,
57
185697
4031
03:21
the number of land mines almost doubled,
58
189752
2596
o número de minas terrestres quase dobrou,
03:24
from 3,695 to 6,461 people.
59
192372
5915
passando de 3.695 para 6.461 vítimas.
Imaginem.
03:31
Imagine that.
60
199051
1184
03:32
While some countries
are trying to get rid of land mines,
61
200259
2936
Enquanto alguns países
estão tentando se livrar das minas,
03:35
some others are increasing their use.
62
203219
2419
outros estão ampliando seu uso.
03:38
But what happens when a conflict
that involved land mines
63
206648
4096
Mas o que acontece quando um conflito
onde minas terrestres são usadas termina?
03:42
comes to an end?
64
210768
1308
03:44
There are two consequences.
65
212782
2183
Há duas consequências.
03:46
On the one hand,
66
214989
1659
Por um lado,
03:48
the internally displaced population
will start returning to their lands,
67
216672
4688
a população interna desalojada
vai começar a voltar pra suas terras
03:53
and on the other hand,
68
221384
1848
e, por outro lado,
03:55
hidden land mines are going
to start exploding more often
69
223256
3635
minas terrestres escondidas vão começar
a explodir com mais frequência
03:58
on the civilian side.
70
226915
1388
sob os pés de civis.
04:01
That's the reason why I decided to join
