ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tom Shannon - Sculptor
Tom Shannon's mixed-material sculpture seems to levitate -- often it actually does -- thanks to powerful magnets and clever arrangements of suspension wire. He designed the TED Prize trophy.

Why you should listen

Artist and inventor Tom Shannon's sculpture has been exhibited in galleries and institutions all around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. His clever orchestrations of hidden magnets and tiny suspension cables make otherwise inert materials such as steel and wood take on a truly otherworldly quality -- bringing objects like planets, stars and atoms to a scale you can understand (and touch).

Shannon also holds the patents for the first tactile telephone, a color television projector and a synchronous world clock that is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. He is developing a spherical helium airship whose entire surface is an LED video screen.

This is a sculpture雕塑 I made制作,

0
2000
00:14
which哪一个 is a way of, kind of, freeing自由化 a form形成
1
2000
6000
00:20
into an object目的 that has different不同 degrees of freedom自由.
2
8000
5000
00:25
So, it can balance平衡 on a point.
3
13000
5000
00:30
This is a bronze青铜 ball,
4
18000
2000
00:32
an aluminum arm here,
5
20000
2000
00:34
and then this wooden disk磁盘.
6
22000
3000
00:37
And the wooden disk磁盘 was really thought about
7
25000
3000
00:40
as something that you'd want to hold保持 on to,
8
28000
2000
00:42
and that would glide滑行 easily容易 through通过 your hands.
9
30000
4000
00:46
The aluminum is because it's very light.
10
34000
3000
00:49
The bronze青铜 is nice不错 hard, durable耐用 material材料
11
37000
2000
00:51
that could roll on the ground地面.
12
39000
2000
00:53
Inside of the bronze青铜 ball
13
41000
4000
00:57
there's a lead weight重量
14
45000
2000
00:59
that is free-swinging直率的 on an axle
15
47000
2000
01:01
that's on two bearings轴承
16
49000
3000
01:04
that pass通过 in between之间, across横过 it,
17
52000
3000
01:07
like this, that counterbalance抗衡 this weight重量.
18
55000
3000
01:10
So it allows允许 it to roll.
19
58000
3000
01:13
And the sphere领域 has that balance平衡 property属性
20
61000
3000
01:16
that it always sort分类 of stays入住 still
21
64000
3000
01:19
and looks容貌 the same相同 from every一切 direction方向.
22
67000
2000
01:21
But if you put something on top最佳 of it,
23
69000
3000
01:24
it disbalancesdisbalances it. And so it would tip小费 over.
24
72000
3000
01:27
But in this case案件 because
25
75000
2000
01:29
the interior室内 is free-swinging直率的
26
77000
2000
01:31
in relation关系 to the sphere领域,
27
79000
2000
01:33
it can stand up on one point.
28
81000
3000
01:36
And then there was a second第二 level水平 to this object目的,
29
84000
5000
01:41
which哪一个 is that it --
30
89000
2000
是-
01:43
I wanted it to convey传达 some proportions比例 that I was interested有兴趣 in,
31
91000
4000
01:47
which哪一个 is the diameter直径 of the Moon月亮
32
95000
3000
01:50
and the diameter直径 of the Earth地球
33
98000
2000
01:52
in proportion比例 to each other.
34
100000
3000
01:55
I was exploring探索, really early on,
35
103000
4000
01:59
wanting希望 to make things float浮动 in the air空气.
36
107000
2000
02:01
And I thought up a lot of ideas思路.
37
109000
2000
02:03
This is sculpture雕塑 that I made制作 that --
38
111000
5000
02:08
it's magnetically levitated悬浮.
39
116000
3000
02:11
The thing is, is that it's slightly dangerous危险.
40
119000
2000
02:13
Normally一般 it's sort分类 of cordoned封锁 off when it's in a museum博物馆.
41
121000
3000
02:16
But it's uh -- let's see if I can manipulate操作 it a little bit
42
124000
4000
02:20
without, umUM -- oops哎呀.
43
128000
3000
02:23
So this is just floating
44
131000
3000
02:26
floating漂浮的 on a permanent常驻 magnetic磁性 field领域,
45
134000
3000
02:29
which哪一个 stabilizes稳定 it in all directions方向.
46
137000
3000
02:32
Except there is a slight轻微 tether系链 here,
47
140000
2000
02:34
which哪一个 keeps保持 it from going over the top最佳 of its field领域.
48
142000
5000
02:39
It's sort分类 of surfing冲浪 on a magnetic磁性 field领域
49
147000
2000
02:41
at the crest波峰 of a wave.
50
149000
2000
02:43
And that's what supports支持 the object目的 and keeps保持 it stable稳定.
51
151000
6000
02:49
I think we could roll the tape胶带, admin管理.
52
157000
3000
02:52
I have a sort分类 of a collection采集 of videos视频
53
160000
3000
02:55
that I took of different不同 installations安装, which哪一个 I could narrate叙事.
54
163000
3000
02:58
This is a sculpture雕塑 of the Sun太阳
55
166000
3000
03:01
and the Earth地球, in proportion比例.
56
169000
2000
03:03
Representing代表 that eight and a half minutes分钟
57
171000
3000
03:06
that it takes light and gravity重力 to connect the two.
58
174000
3000
03:09
So here is the Earth地球. It's a little less than a millimeter毫米
59
177000
4000
03:13
that was turned转身 of solid固体 bronze青铜.
60
181000
3000
03:16
And here is a similar类似 sculpture雕塑.
61
184000
2000
03:18
That's the Sun太阳 at that end结束.
62
186000
2000
03:20
And then in a series系列 of 55 balls,
63
188000
3000
03:23
it reduces减少, proportionately按比例 -- each ball
64
191000
2000
03:25
and the spaces空间 between之间 them
65
193000
2000
03:30
until直到 they get down to this little Earth地球.
67
198000
3000
03:33
This is in a sculpture雕塑 park公园 in Taejon大田.
68
201000
4000
03:42
This one is about the Moon月亮
69
210000
3000
03:45
and then the distance距离 to the Earth地球, in proportion比例 also.
70
213000
5000
03:50
This is a little stone ball, floating
71
218000
2000
03:52
As you can see the little tether系链,
72
220000
2000
03:54
that it's also magnetically levitated悬浮.
73
222000
5000
03:59
And then this is the first part部分 of --
74
227000
3000
04:02
this is 109 spheres,
75
230000
2000
04:04
since以来 the Sun太阳 is 109 times the diameter直径 of the Earth地球.
76
232000
4000
04:08
And so this is the size尺寸 of the Sun太阳.
77
236000
2000
04:10
And then each of these little spheres
78
238000
2000
04:12
is the size尺寸 of the Earth地球 in proportion比例 to the Sun太阳.
79
240000
4000
04:16
It's made制作 up of 16 concentric同心 shells炮弹. Each one has 92 spheres.
80
244000
4000
04:20
This is in the courtyard庭院 of a twelfth-century十二世纪 alchemist方士.
81
248000
4000
04:24
I was thinking思维 that the Sun太阳 is kind of the ultimate最终 alchemist方士. (Laughter笑声)
82
252000
4000
04:34
So this, again, is on the subject
83
262000
3000
04:37
a slice from the equator赤道 of the Earth地球.
84
265000
2000
04:39
And then the Moon月亮 in the center中央,
85
267000
2000
04:41
and it's floating漂浮的. And this is in France法国.
86
269000
3000
05:03
This is in Sapporo
87
291000
2000
05:05
It's balancing平衡 on a shaft and a ball,
88
293000
3000
05:08
right at the center中央 of gravity重力, or just slightly above以上 the center中央 of gravity重力,
89
296000
3000
05:11
which哪一个 means手段 that the lower降低 half of the object目的
90
299000
4000
05:15
is just a little bit more weighty.
91
303000
2000
05:17
So you can see it rotating旋转 here.
92
305000
2000
05:19
It weighs about a ton or over a ton.
93
307000
2000
05:21
It's made制作 of stainless不锈 steel, quite相当 thick.
94
309000
2000
05:23
But it's being存在 balanced均衡 like that in equilibrium平衡.
95
311000
2000
05:25
It's susceptible易感 to motion运动 by the air空气 currents电流.
96
313000
5000
05:32
This is another另一个 species种类 of work that I do.
97
320000
3000
05:35
These are these arrays阵列. These spheres are all suspended暂停,
98
323000
3000
05:38
but they have magnets磁铁 horizontally水平 in them
99
326000
2000
05:40
that make them all like compasses圆规.
100
328000
2000
05:42
So all the red sides双方, for example, face面对 one direction方向: south.
101
330000
5000
05:47
And the blue蓝色 side, the compliment赞扬, faces面孔 the other way.
102
335000
3000
05:50
So as you turn around you're seeing眼看 different不同 colors颜色.
103
338000
3000
05:53
This is based基于 on the structure结构体 of a diamond钻石.
104
341000
3000
05:56
It was a diamond钻石 cell细胞 structure结构体
105
344000
2000
05:58
was the point of departure离开.
106
346000
2000
06:00
And then there were kind of large spaces空间 in the hollows空洞
107
348000
4000
06:04
between之间 the atoms原子.
108
352000
2000
06:06
And so I placed放置 one more element元件 of each one of them.
109
354000
4000
06:10
These were white白色 spheres.
110
358000
2000
06:12
Then I had video视频 projectors投影机
111
360000
2000
06:14
that were projecting突出 intermittently间歇 onto the spheres.
112
362000
3000
06:17
So they would catch抓住 parts部分 of the images图片,
113
365000
2000
06:19
and make sort分类 of three-dimensional三维 color颜色 volumes,
114
367000
4000
06:23
as you walk步行 through通过 it, through通过 the object目的.
115
371000
3000
06:29
This is something I did
116
377000
2000
这是我
06:31
of a tactile communication通讯 system系统.
117
379000
3000
06:34
It was the idea理念 of isolating隔离 the tactile component零件 of sculpture雕塑,
118
382000
3000
06:37
and then putting it into a communication通讯 system系统.
119
385000
4000
06:41
This is an idea理念 of moving移动 a sculpture雕塑, a ball,
120
389000
3000
06:44
that would be directed针对 around the room房间
121
392000
2000
06:46
by a computer电脑.
122
394000
2000
06:48
This is a clock时钟 I designed设计.
123
396000
2000
06:50
It has Buckminster巴克明斯特 Fuller's富勒 DymaxionDymaxion Map地图 edited编辑 here.
124
398000
4000
06:54
It turns once一旦 per day in synchrony同步 with the Earth地球.
125
402000
5000
06:59
And then, this is like
126
407000
5000
这是个
07:04
projects项目 that are harder更难 to build建立.
127
412000
3000
07:07
(Laughter
128
415000
1000
07:08
This has a diamond-bottomed钻石底 lake.
129
416000
3000
07:11
So it's a floating漂浮的 island
130
419000
2000
07:13
with water, fresh新鲜 water,
131
421000
2000
07:15
that can fly from place地点 to place地点.
132
423000
2000
07:17
This would be grown长大的, I suppose假设,
133
425000
2000
07:19
with nanotechnology纳米技术 in the future未来 sometime某时.
134
427000
4000
07:23
In the course课程 of doing my work
135
431000
3000
07:26
I sort分类 of have a broad广阔 range范围 of interests利益.
136
434000
4000
07:30
And some of it is just the idea理念 of creating创建 media媒体 --
137
438000
4000
07:34
media媒体 as a sculpture雕塑,
138
442000
2000
07:36
something that would keep the sculpture雕塑
139
444000
3000
07:42
by just creating创建 the media媒体 that the sculpture雕塑 is made制作 of.
141
450000
4000
07:46
And I had a lot of --
142
454000
3000
07:49
always interested有兴趣 in the concept概念 of a crystal水晶 ball.
143
457000
4000
07:53
And the idea理念 that you could see things
144
461000
3000
07:56
inside of a crystal水晶 ball and predict预测 the future未来 --
145
464000
3000
07:59
or a television电视 set, where it's sort分类 of like a magic魔法 box
146
467000
3000
08:02
where anything can appear出现.
147
470000
2000
08:04
I had thought about, a long time ago,
148
472000
5000
