in the doctor's waiting room
requires a largeness of spirit
from those who love you;
of the "Drink Me" bottle,
when wrestled round with both hands.
all this growing small:
shrinking woman
serene, making do with less.
space glimmers,
of those accustomed
in the provocation of a button,
while negotiating the dark.
in an intimate, fierce discipline,
who exert stupendous effort
in growing small,
"On Donating My Brain to Science."
reassuring religious people.
kidneys, corneas, liver, lungs,
imagined its unique value in research,
they're not quite sure I have.
spread me on your slides.
squint through your lens.
harvest me, track the clues.
smear me on your slides,
I want to be used
up.
snails, jellyfish, worms --
from our most lucent selves.
to show our true colors.
can act as telescopes,
of star systems to faint arcs --
through a glass of wine.
spied out by the Hubble,
every pedestrian walk-on stare.
even standing, is illogical --
is not al dente anymore.
beautiful but boring,
has never been my strong point.
the most direct route through
mind how you turn:
in an empty theater.
to beckon the darkness in
to see both Self and Other
of original sin:
in the garden's dark.
on the slick slate slabs,
lands in the vestibule like a grenade,
blinks and glares awake.
to manhood now --
not distant but apart --
nights, gaudy noons.
grieve too long a while,

Poet, author, editor and activist Robin Morgan has published more than 20 books, including the Sisterhood Is Powerful anthologies, the best-selling The Demon Lover: The Roots of Terrorism, and six books of poetry. The recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Prize (Poetry) and other honors, and the former editor-in-chief of Ms., she cofounded (with Simone de Beauvoir) the Sisterhood Is Global Institute and cofounded (with Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem) the Women's Media Center.
