ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Amit Kalra - Fashion enthusiast
Amit Kalra wants to fix fashion's pollution problem.

Why you should listen

When Amit Kalra was 20, he decided he wanted to be more stylish than his budget would allow. He taught himself to design and make his own clothing, sifting through thrift stores for cheap materials. Kalra's side project of cutting and sewing recycled clothes for friends and small clothing brands led him to an idea that he hopes will turn the fashion industry on its head -- and save the planet while he’s at it.

Kalra holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen's University in Ontario, Canada. At PVH Canada, he manages the planning, operations and finances for their Dress Shirt division. Outside of work, he attends fashion school part-time.

What was even more surprising

This is an important重要 comparison对照 to make.

02:28
I don't want to defend保卫

55

02:31
but I'd be lying说谎 if I said I was surprised诧异
to hear they were the number one polluter污染.
56
139120
4026
02:35
I just assumed假定, fairly相当 or not,
that that's an industry行业
57
143170
2486
02:37
that doesn't really mind心神
sticking症结 to the status状态 quo现状.
58
145680
2456
02:40
One where the technology技术
doesn't really change更改
59
148160
2176
02:42
and the focus焦点 is more so
02:44
at the expense费用 of a sustainable可持续发展 future未来.
61
152720
1896
02:46
But I was really surprised诧异 to see
that the fashion时尚 industry行业 was number two.
62
154640
3576
02:50
Because maintaining维持 that status状态 quo现状
63
158240
1696
02:51
is the opposite对面 of what
the fashion时尚 industry行业 stands站立 for.
64
159960
2656
02:54
The unfortunate不幸的 reality现实 is,
65
162640
1336
02:56
not only do we waste浪费
a lot of the things we do consume消耗,
66
164000
2616
02:58
but we also use a lot to produce生产
the clothes衣服 that we buy购买 each year.

03:01
On average平均, a household's家庭的 purchase采购

3176
03:11
That's a lot of water.
71
179160
1656
03:12
It seems似乎 that the industry行业
that always has been
72
180840
2376
03:15
and probably大概 always will be
on the forefront第一线 of design设计,
73
183240
2616
03:17
creates创建 products制品 that are designed设计

03:26
But I think that can change更改.
78

03:28
I think the fashion时尚 industry's业界

79
196160
2576
03:30
is the exact精确 thing that should make it
80
198760
1856
03:35
And I think to get started开始,
all we have to do
82
203480
2136
03:37
is start开始 to design设计 clothes衣服
to be recyclable可回收 at the end结束 of their life.
83
205640
3256
84
208920
1656
03:42
is definitely无疑 something
to leave离开 to the professionals专业人士.
85
210600
2576
03:45
But as a 24-year-old-岁
86
213200
2456
03:47
armed武装 with a sewing针线活 machine,
87
215680
1376
03:49
if I were to very humbly虚心
03:51
it would be to approach途径 clothing服装 design设计
kind of like building建造 with Lego乐高玩具.
89
219560
3616
03:55
When we put together一起 a brick of Lego乐高玩具,
90
223200
1816
03:57
it's very strong强大
but very easily容易 manipulated操纵.
91
225040
2176
03:59
It's modular模块化 in its nature性质.
92
227240
1776
04:01
Clothing服装 design设计 as it stands站立 today今天
is very rarely很少 modular模块化.
93
229040
2720
04:04
Take this motorcycle摩托车 jacket夹克 as an example.
94
232400
2096
04:06
It's a pretty漂亮 standard标准 jacket夹克
with its buttons纽扣, zippers拉链 and trim修剪.
95
234520
3776
04:10
But in order订购 for us to efficiently有效率的
recycle回收 a jacket夹克 like this,
96
238320
2936
04:13
we need to be able能够
to easily容易 remove去掉 these items项目
97
241280
2216
04:15
and quickly很快 get down to just the fabric.
98
243520
1976
04:17
Once一旦 we have just the fabric,
99
245520
1416
04:18
we're able能够 to break打破 it down
by shredding切碎 it
100
246960
2056
04:21
and getting得到 back to thread线 level水平,
101
249040
1616
04:22
make new thread线 that then
gets得到 made制作 into new fabric
102
250680
2416
04:25
and ultimately最终 new clothing服装,
103
253120
1376
04:26
whether是否 it be a new jacket夹克
or new T-shirtsT恤, for example.
104
254520
2735
04:29
But the complexity复杂 lies
with all of these extra额外 items项目,
105
257279
2577
04:31
the buttons纽扣, the zippers拉链 and the trim修剪.
106
259880
1856
04:33
Because in reality现实, these items项目
are actually其实 quite相当 difficult to remove去掉.
107
261760
3376
04:37
So in many许多 cases it requires要求
more time or more money
108
265160
2456
04:39
to disassemble拆卸 a jacket夹克 like this.
109
267640
1776
04:41
In some cases, it's just more
cost-effective经济有效 to throw it away
110
269440
3096
04:44
rather than recycle回收 it.
111
272560
1496
04:46
But I think this can change更改
if we design设计 clothes衣服 in a modular模块化 way
112
274080
3256
04:49
to be easily容易 disassembled拆卸
at the end结束 of their lives生活.
113
277360
2736
04:52
We could redesign重新设计 this jacket夹克
to have a hidden wireframe线框,
114
280120
3136
04:55
kind of like the skeleton骨架 of a fish,
that holds持有 all important重要 items项目 together一起.
115
283280
3640
04:59
can have all of these extra额外 items项目,
116
287520
3576
05:03
the zippers拉链 and the buttons纽扣 and the trim修剪,
117
291120
1976
05:05
sewn缝制 into it and then
attached to the fabric.
118
293120
2136
05:07
So at the end结束 of the jacket's夹克的 life,
119
295280
1696
05:09
all you have to do
is remove去掉 its fish bone
120
297000
2056
05:11
and the fabric comes with it
121
299080
1416
05:12
a lot quicker更快 and a lot
easier更轻松 than before.
122
300520
2016
05:14
Now, recycling回收 clothing服装
is definitely无疑 one piece of the puzzle难题.
123
302560
2936
05:17
But if we want to take
124
305520
1256
that the fashion时尚 industry行业 has
125
306800
2936
05:21
more seriously认真地,
126
309760
1216
05:23
then we need to take this to the next下一个 step
and start开始 to design设计 clothes衣服
127
311000
3296
05:26
to also be compostable堆肥
at the end结束 of their lives生活.
128
314320
2336
05:28
For most of the types类型 of clothes衣服
we have in our closet壁橱
129
316680
2536
05:31
the average平均 lifespan寿命 is about three years年份.
130
319240
2056

06:35
is the way that we dye染料 our clothes衣服.

The tricky狡猾 thing is
that these harsh苛刻 chemicals化学制品

Let's think about it.
175
432920
