ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Bill Ford - Executive chair, Ford Motor Co.
As executive chair of the Ford Motor Company, Bill Ford leads the company that put the world on wheels.

Why you should listen

William Clay Ford Jr. is the executive chair of the Ford Motor Company, founded by his great-grandfather, Henry Ford, in Detroit. This massive company found great success selling cars to the world. Now, Ford is looking toward a future that's not simply about selling more and more cars. Ford looks to a future where cars are greener and cleaner, move more efficiently on better, smarter road systems -- and sometimes are replaced by mass transit and other forms of mobility.

Ford joined Ford Motor Company in 1979 as a product planning analyst.  He subsequently held a variety of positions in manufacturing, sales, marketing, product development and finance.  During the breakthrough 1982 Ford-United Auto Workers labor talks, which launched the employee involvement movement that revolutionized the industry, he served on the company’s National Bargaining Team.

Mr. Ford joined the Board of Directors in 1988 and has been its chairman since January 1999.  He serves as chairman of the board's Finance Committee and as a member of the Sustainability Committee.  He also served as chief executive officer of the company from October 2001 to September 2006, when he was named executive chairman.

As CEO, Mr. Ford improved quality, lowered costs and delivered exciting new products.  During his time in that position he took the company from a $5.5 billion loss in 2001 to three straight years of profitability.  Through the years, his vision for the company has remained unchanged.

He says: "The ongoing success of Ford Motor Company is my life’s work. We want to have an even greater impact in our next 100 years than we did in our first 100."

and as I said, we're not there yet然而; we've我们已经 got a lot of work to do,
148
357000
3000
06:15
but I can see where we will --
149
360000
2000
06:17
but even as we're in the process处理 of doing that,
150
362000
3000
06:20
another另一个 huge巨大 problem问题 is looming若隐若现,
151
365000
2000
06:22
and people aren't noticing注意到.
152
367000
3000
06:25
And that is the freedom自由 of mobility流动性
153
370000
2000
06:27
that my great grandfather祖父 brought to people
154
372000
2000
06:29
is now being存在 threatened受威胁, just as the environment环境 is.
155
374000
3000
06:32
The problem问题, put in its simplest简单 terms条款,
156
377000
3000
06:35
is one of mathematics数学.
157
380000
2000
06:37
Today今天 there are approximately 6.8 billion十亿 people in the world世界,
158
382000
4000
06:41
and within our lifetime一生, that number's数字的 going to grow增长
159
386000
2000
06:43
to about nine billion十亿.
160
388000
2000
06:45
And at that population人口 level水平,
161
390000
2000
06:47
our planet行星 will be dealing交易 with the limits范围 of growth发展.
162
392000
3000
06:50
And with that growth发展
163
395000
2000
06:52
comes some severe严重 practical实际的 problems问题,
164
397000
3000
06:55
one of which哪一个 is our transportation运输 system系统
165
400000
3000
06:58
simply只是 won't惯于 be able能够 to deal合同 with it.
166
403000
3000
07:01
When we look at the population人口 growth发展 in terms条款 of cars汽车,
167
406000
2000
07:03
it becomes even clearer更清晰.
168
408000
2000
07:05
Today今天 there are about 800 million百万 cars汽车 on the road worldwide全世界.
169
410000
3000
07:08
But with more people
170
413000
2000
07:10
and greater更大 prosperity繁荣 around the world世界,
171
415000
2000
07:12
that number's数字的 going to grow增长
172
417000
2000
07:14
to between之间 two and four billion十亿 cars汽车 by mid century世纪.
173
419000
3000
07:17
And this is going to create创建 the kind of global全球 gridlock僵局
174
422000
3000
07:20
that the world世界 has never seen看到 before.
175
425000
3000
07:23
Now think about the impact
176
428000
2000
07:25
that this is going to have on our daily日常 lives生活.
177
430000
2000
07:27
Today今天 the average平均 American美国
178
432000
2000
07:29
spends about a week a year
179
434000
2000
07:31
stuck卡住 in traffic交通 jams果酱,
180
436000
2000
07:33
and that's a huge巨大 waste浪费 of time and resources资源.
181
438000
3000
07:36
But that's nothing compared相比
182
441000
2000
07:38
to what's going on
183
443000
2000
07:40
in the nations国家 that are growing生长 the fastest最快的.
184
445000
2000
07:42
Today今天 the average平均 driver司机 in Beijing北京
185
447000

07:44
has a five-hour五小时 commute改判.
186
449000
3000
07:47
And last summer夏季 -- many许多 of you probably大概 saw this --
187
452000
3000
07:50
there was a hundred-mile一百英里 traffic交通 jam果酱
188
455000
3000
07:53
that took 11 days to clear明确 in China中国.
189
458000
3000
07:56
In the decades几十年 to come,
190
461000
2000
07:58
75 percent百分 of the world's世界 population人口
191
463000

08:00
will live生活 in cities城市,

08:02
and 50 of those cities城市

08:04
will be of 10 million百万 people or more.
194
469000
3000
08:07
So you can see the size尺寸 of the issue问题 that we're facing面对.
195
472000
3000
08:10
When you factor因子 in population人口 growth发展,
196
475000
3000
08:13
it's clear明确 that the mobility流动性 model模型 that we have today今天
197
478000
3000
08:16
simply只是 will not work tomorrow明天.
198
481000
2000
08:18
Frankly坦率地说, four billion十亿 clean清洁 cars汽车 on the road
199
483000
3000
08:21
are still four billion十亿 cars汽车,
200
486000
2000
08:23
and a traffic交通 jam果酱 with no emissions排放
201
488000
3000
08:26
is still a traffic交通 jam果酱.
202
491000
3000
08:29
So, if we make no changes变化 today今天,
203
494000
3000
08:32
what does tomorrow明天 look like?
204
497000
2000
08:34
Well I think you probably大概 already已经 have the picture图片.
205
499000
3000
08:37
Traffic交通 jams果酱 are just a symptom症状 of this challenge挑战,
206
502000
2000
08:39
and they're really very, very inconvenient不方便,
207
504000
2000
08:41
but that's all they are.
208
506000
2000
08:43
But the bigger issue问题
209
508000
2000
08:45
is that global全球 gridlock僵局
210
510000
2000
08:47
is going to stifle窒息 economic经济 growth发展
211
512000
2000
08:49
and our ability能力 to deliver交付
212

08:51
food餐饮 and health健康 care关心,
213

08:53
particularly尤其 to people that live生活 in city centers中心.
214
518000
3000
08:56
And our quality质量 of life is going to be severely严重 compromised妥协.
215
521000
4000
09:00
So what's going to solve解决 this?
216
525000
2000
09:02
Well the answer回答 isn't going to be more of the same相同.
217
527000
3000
09:05
My great grandfather祖父 once一旦 said
218
530000
3000
09:08
before he invented发明 the Model模型 T,
219
533000
2000
09:10
"If I had asked people then what they wanted,
220
535000
2000
“如果我问当时的人们它们想要什么
09:12
they would have answered回答,
221
537000
2000
09:14
'We want faster更快 horses马匹.'"
222
539000
2000
‘我们想要跑得更快的马’”
09:16
So the answer回答 to more cars汽车
223
541000
2000
09:18
is simply只是 not to have more roads道路.
224
543000
3000
